Potato vacation at Askerud farm in Ski, 1950

Until the 1970s, Norwegian school children got a week off in October to work picking potatoes at farms, often their family farm. This was called potato vacation. After awhile spending the vacation working at farms became rare and the potato vacation became the autumn vacation.

There are! Lots of them, at least up north. Not these ones I think, but it’s a problem, and also really sad. I guess it’s because of the harsh climate and dwindling population in rural areas?

Hi! I was wondering if you know anything about the place of pronominal objects in Norwegian? Bc you'd say "jeg liker det ikke" but "jeg tror ikke det" sooo I cant quite figure out in which case it comes before adverbial/negation and in which case it stays in its original place. Any help would be appreciated!

Wow, this is something I’ve never thought about or even realized. In my head, “jeg liker det ikke” and “jeg liker ikke det” conveys pretty much the same meaning, but the first one emphasizes the negation slightly more.

jeg liker det ikke = I don’t like itjeg liker ikke det = I don’t like it

With the next sentence it’s a little weird. For some reason, I want to translate them differently:

jeg tror ikke det = I don’t think so; I don’t believe it (I’d say the construction below is more common for this one though)jeg tror det ikke = I don’t believe it

I wish I could help you more, but I honestly have no idea what the grammar rules behind this is. This is just something I haven’t thought about before 😅 If anyone could explain this, please feel free to!

actually, i did some research and managed to find the answer! there’s apparently such a thing as object shift in norwegian. whereas most objects in the sentence come after the negation/adverbial (e.g. jeg kjøpte ikke den bilen), there are exceptions, namely when the object is a pronoun and refers to a “material thing” (linguists call it nominal antecedent). so you can reply to “hvorfor spiste han ikke pizza?” with “han liker den ikke” bc DEN is a pronoun and refers to pizza, so it comes before the negation. but in “martha vil dra på ferie. magnus vil ikke det” the pronominal object comes after the negation bc it refers to an action, not a specific object. hope it helps someone else! 💖

How does one day "though" in Norwegian? As in "I think he's attractive, though." or "She's probably done, though."

In English, “though” is used to add something to an already established context, almost like an afterthought, to contradict, question or nuance the previous sentence. In Norwegian, we usually add “da” to the end of a sentence to say the same, although this depends a little bit on context. Additionally, “da” has many other functions in Norwegian and doesn’t always mean “though”.

Han er ikke så kjekk, men han har en fin personlighet, da! - He’s not very handsome, but he has a nice personality, though!

Kanskje Eli ikke er på skolen i dag? Jeg så henne i kantina, da. - Maybe Eli’s not at school today? I saw her in the cafeteria, though.

Du sier du så noen snike seg inn i huset ditt? Er du sikker på at det ikke bare var mannen din, da? - You’re saying you saw someone sneak into your house? Are you sure it wasn’t just your husband, though?
