Note that sometimes names of animals (females and males as well) correspond with animal species.

For example, Кошка – это животное. Cat is an animal. У меня есть кот и кошка. I have a tomcat and a cat. Лев – это животное. В зоопарке есть лев и львица. There are a lion and a lioness at the zoo. Sometimes they don’t correspond. Лошадь – это животное. Horse is an animal. В лесу гуляют кобыла и конь. A mare and a horse are walking in the forest.
