Of Dinner Parties and Propriety (Kihyun)
Pairings: Kihyun X Female!Reader
You glared at the white piece of paper that your father had just slid over to you. Even from far away it managed to scream extravagant, rich and snobbish beyond all belief, things you hated the most.
With extravagance and money came the one thing that you were never able to stand, propriety. It had been ages since Queen Victoria had died, but the Victorian morals were something that never seemed to leave the world, and more importantly, you, alone. And you hated that fact with every single bone in your body.
“Stop looking at the invitation like that y/n. It's not that bad,” your mother chastised from across you, rolling her eyes at your antics. You puffed out your cheeks, transferring the glare from the invitation to your father.
“I am not wearing a dress, if that's what you want,” you slammed your hand down on the counter to emphasize you point. Your father just gave you a small smile that seemed to say "my-house-my-rules-sweetheart."
And what you dreaded was exactly what seemed to happen.
Three hours later you were sitting in the car with your parents, all dolled up in a perfectly overpriced dress and killer heels. Your silent grumbles were ignored by your parents as you continued to complain, either about how tight the dress was or how uncomfortable your shoes were. They were used to you and nothing you said fazed them in the slightest. In your parents' eyes, they had an image to uphold for the sake of their social, and personal, welfare, and having to deal with you complaining by listening to you, and effectively ignoring you, was a sacrifice they were willing to make for the sake of the life they wanted to lead.
Meanwhile, you just hated such gatherings by nature and preferred to be as far away from your father’s elite business partners as possible.
As the car came to a stop outside a huge house, which screamed too-much-money whichever way you looked at it, you couldn’t help but let out a long exasperated sigh. Here goes nothing. Same old drill: keep your chin up and your lips pulled in a smile. Your cheeks were going to hurt by the end of this dinner for sure.
The house belonged to an acquaintance whom you had never met, and, as your father introduced him and his son to you, you couldn’t help but notice the same forced expression all over his face. He looked like he wished he was anywhere but here and that made you like the boy instantly. Someone as fed up of these parties as you? Yes please.
As you made his acquaintance, you noticed the clothes he wore, how loosely they hung off his body, and just how careless he was, almost sloppy, in carrying himself. his hair was slightly tousled, two buttons of his shirt undone, no tie to be seen. he stood tall, but slightly hunched. and yet, with all his sloppiness, he was strikingly handsome. his features were sharp and his eyes were intense, as much as they were bored at the moment. his careless, but pretty appearance drew you to him.
“Kihyun, why don’t you show our guest around?” his father nudged the boy in your direction, and Kihyun rolled his eyes. Well, that makes the both of us, you thought, as the boy led you through the crowd.
You both walked silently, side by side, watching people interact about their over the top lifestyles and the latest gossip. It was all making your head hurt. You could feel yourself reaching the end of your patience, especially with all the whispers around you.
“Oh what the hell! Can’t these people get a life!” you mumbled as you heard another woman giggle about the ‘lower status marriage’ of some girl. You didn’t expect Kihyun to hear, but when he hummed out an agreement, you couldn’t help but look at him, eyes wide.
“What?" He smirked at you, continuing disapprovingly, "It’s true that these people need to focus on something other than the stick up their ass,” Kihyun shrugged before realizing what he said.
He turned to you with wide eyes and pink cheeks, muttering apology after apology.
“Why are you saying sorry? I couldn’t agree with you more,” you laughed, shaking your head. He visibly relaxed at your remark.
After a few minutes of silence, Kihyun suddenly seized your hand, pulling you along with him.
“Where are we going?” you asked, confused and a little apprehensive.
“You don’t want to be here. I don’t want to be here and everyone around us is a snobbish and patronizing elitist, just looking for a new scoop," he bent to say in your ear, smiling from ear to ear, "so why don’t we actually give them something to talk about?” his eyes glittered mischievously as he continued to pull you along, “let’s add some fun to the party.”
You giggled excitedly at his suggestion, forcing him to stop before you quickly pulled off your heels, grinning at the prospect of the probably the most exciting thing happening to you, ever.
“One thing these people hate more than the economic recession: impropriety,” you laughed, holding onto the heels as you began to navigate through the people to the middle of the hall. Some people stopped and stared at you two as you ran, their eyes so wide you feared they would fall out.
But you didn’t care. You were ready to break all silent rules of a party, just so you'd never again be invited, a risk you were fine with taking.
Laughing at the horrified faces you saw, Kihyun twirled you around once you reached the middle of the room. Dancing to a nonexistent beat, Kihyun pulled you closer, dipping you near the ground before pulling you up.
People all around you whispered and looked on in complete shock, but none of you cared. In a bubble of your own newfound joy, you two danced in the most absurd way possible, your laughter the only thing echoing through the silent room.
From the corner of your eye, you saw both your fathers rushing towards you, vehemently attempting to stop you two before you embarrassed either family any more. But Kihyun was not having any of that. He grabbed your hand again, pulling you towards the big glass doors that lead to the huge backyard. Your parents couldn’t run. Unlike you, they had an image to maintain.
Kihyun guided you towards the huge fountain right in front of the doors before jumping in. His laugh that rang out was so carefree that you couldn’t help but join him as well, ruining the dress your mother had spent so much money on. It wasn't like you had wanted to wear it anyway, and just thinking about the price of it alone made you feel like you were in some kind of coffin.
The water sprayed down on the two to you, drenching you within seconds as Kihyun pulled you to himself, trying to waltz in the water. The look in his eyes made a grin spread over your lips. It looked like he had gone back in time and was now a mere child, focused on only having fun.
“This is the most fun I have had in ages,” Kihyun whispered, twirling you around. Unfortunately, or fortunately, depends on how you look at it, the dress caught up in this feet, making you both lose your balance. Quickly, Kihyun maneuvered himself so you fell on top of him, getting as little hurt as possible.
As you gazed at him from your position, you felt your heart constrict suddenly. His eyes looked like they were two round orbs of light, waiting to consume you whole. The half smile on his lips was both teasing and genuine, making your heart flutter. In that moment, maybe because of the thrill or because of hormones, you slowly leaned forward, your lips pulling up in a smirk of their own.
“Let’s give them something to talk about for real,” you whispered before your lips crashed onto him. His arms tightened around you and the world just melted away. You didn’t feel the fountain splashing water all over you, you didn’t hear your parents frenzied shouts and neither did you care about the snide remarks being passed about you two. Nothing else really mattered to you right now.
All you could hear was his heart beating in sync with yours. All you could feel was his lips against yours. All you could care about was how, any second now, this moment would end and you would have to go back to the real world.
But as Kihyun's rough hand came up to hold your face as he kissed you, you couldn’t help but just forget about everything and focus on this one moment.
So what if the trance was soon to break?
At least you were going to keep a memory of one of the most exciting and genuinely joyful nights of your life.
