Need a way to get involved on campus? Sign up for an intramural sport! Here are just a few things you probably didn’t know about IUPUI’s intramurals:

1. Teams made up of thousands A total of 2,278 unique individuals participated in intramural sports at IUPUI during the 2016-2017 academic year.

2. Intramurals in the city The Campus Recreation basketball championships are hosted at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, on the home court of the Indiana Pacers.

3. So many choices IUPUI offers 16 sports throughout the year for students to participate in.

4. Location, location, location The intramural sports are located all across IUPUI’s campus in four unique locations: the Natatorium and main gym (the Jungle), Carroll Stadium, the intramural softball fields, and the C.R.O.F. (Campus Recreation Outdoor Facility) at Lockefield Green.

5. Work for Campus Rec Campus Recreation on IUPUI’s campus employs over 50 officials and staff, but is always looking to add to their number.

6. Bragging rights IUPUI intramural winners earn a coveted championship shirt, and of course plenty of bragging rights.

7. Frequency Intramural games are played five days a week (Sunday–Thursday), but each individual sport is played anywhere from one to three nights per week.

9 ways the Biology Club can benefit you (and the earth)

The IUPUI Biology Club has a lot to offer, for both individuals and the environment. Learn more about all the benefits of the biology club:

1. Get the creative juices flowing Flowers and plants inspire creativity. In an eight-month study, a Texas A&M University research team explored the link between flowers and plants, and workplace productivity. Both women and men demonstrated more innovative thinking, generating more ideas, and original solutions to problems in an office environment that included flowers and plants.

2. Reduce, reuse, recycle Plants reduce carbon dioxide levels in the air, using the carbon dioxide to produce necessary sugars for the plant to grow.

3. Conditioned air Plants help to naturally cool rooms in the summer and naturally humidify rooms in the winter. Talk about going green!

4. Less stress Research has been done to prove that plants significantly lower stress and increase productivity in students.

5. Breathe in, breathe out Photosynthesis from plants produces oxygen that humans need to breathe.

6. Green thumb Gardening in general helps connect us to nature and the environment while contributing to a healthy diet and lifestyle.

7. Good for you, good for them In additional to all the benefits plants have on humans, plants are also good for insects and animals like bees.

8. For good causes The Biology Club plant sale profits benefit student scholarships as well as local charities.

5 IUPUI events @IUPUI to save the date for

Here are five events you will want to be a part of during the 2017-2018 academic year, regardless of whether you are a participant, spectator, or volunteer.

1. JagVenture A leadership camp for first and second year students that “prepares you for life’s adventures” that takes place August 11-13, 2017. More information can be found here.

2. Weeks of Welcome (WOW) One of the longest traditions at IUPUI, WOW ushers in the new academic year with lots of freebies, events, food, games, and more. Weeks of Welcome is the first several full weeks of the fall semester. More information can be found here.

3. Homecoming IUPUI’s homecoming is a weekend of Jaguar pride and celebration with IUPUI faculty, staff, students, and their families. Save the date for homecoming 2017: October 21-29, 2017. Details can be found here.

7 IUPUI commencement must-knows

Hey, seniors! Graduation will be here before you know it. Here are seven important things you must know before commencement rolls around:

1. The basics The official, campus-wide commencement ceremony will take place at Lucas Oil Stadium on May 14, 2017, at 1:00 p.m.

2. Two is better than one! Students can attend two ceremonies: the main IUPUI Commencement ceremony as well as their individual school’s ceremony. Students may choose to attend both if they’d like.

3. Speakers Senior Amber Kriech will be the student speaker at the ceremony; WNBA star Tamika Catchings will be the keynote speaker.

4. Live-streaming Did you know that the university ceremony would be live-streamed? The broadcast can be viewed prior to the ceremony beginning on 5/14/107 here.

5. Diploma distribution Graduating students will receive their diploma from their individual schools usually a couple months post-commencement.

6. Tassel color and positioning Each school has a unique tassel color. Check out what color tassel you will wear here. Before receiving a degree, the tassel is to be worn on the right side of the graduation cap; once the degree has been given, the tassel can move to the left side.

7. Hotline There is a commencement hotline that can be called to answer additional questions at: 317-278-1700.

7 rare books that can be found at IUPUI

IUPUI is home to many rare books – take a look at these seven pieces of literature that can be found in IUPUI’s collections:

1. Children’s Book about Daniel Boone This book, written in French, dates back to 1931 and is illustrated by Feodor Rojankovsky.

2. Just So Stories for Little Children This is a first edition copy of Kipling’s famous children's book from 1902, which he published three years after the death of his first daughter Josephine, who he told these stories to.

3. Black Beauty This 1915 illustrated edition of Black Beauty is notable for its beautiful color plate illustrations by Lucy Kemp-Welch, a painter who specialized in horses.

4. Show Me! This sexual education book has been translated into eight languages and was a part of the Supreme Court case “New York vs. Ferber” regarding the first amendment legality of non-obscene nude photography of children.

5. Masonry Exposed The publication of this pamphlet led to the author’s unsolved murder and sparked an anti-Masonic movement in the United States.

6. Bible This was the world’s smallest printed Bible when it was created in 1896.

7. Indiana Bulletin of Charities and Correction This bulletin documents Indiana charities at the height of the Progressive era, a local view of a national movement that eventually invented our modern day concept of philanthropy.

10 things to know about IUPUI’s Paw’s Pantry

Paw’s Pantry is an on-campus food pantry designed to help those within the IUPUI community who face food insecurity. Read on to learn more about what Paw’s Pantry is doing and how you can get involved in the action:

1. Let’s begin at the beginning…

The idea for Paw’s Pantry began in 2011 and the grand opening of the food pantry was in 2013.

2. Leadership

Paw’s Pantry has a leadership team of seven individuals committed to help fight food insecurity on IUPUI’s campus. Read more about these leaders here.

3. Volunteer Need volunteer hours for a student organization or scholarship obligation? Fulfill those requirements by spending time volunteering at Paw’s Pantry, either collecting food from crates located around campus or working check-in and check-out when the pantry is open. Details can be found here.

4. Donate

Food donations towards the pantry can be dropped off at one of the 21 donation locations positioned across campus. Monetary donations will also be accepted and gifts can be mailed to the IU Foundation.

5. Host a food drive Food drives are an awesome way to build camaraderie among a student organization or group, and helps keep Paw’s Pantry functioning! There is a form on the Paw’s Pantry website to fill out in order to make the most of your partnership with them.

6. Location, location, location

Paw’s Pantry is located in room CE220 (on the second floor of the IUPUI Campus Center).

7. Come on in, we’re open! The food pantry is open throughout the academic year on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Paw’s Pantry is open for students on Wednesdays, and is open for anyone with a university-issued ID on Thursdays.

8. Time to shop

After filling out a new client intake form and swiping your ID, it’s time to shop. All shoppers are able to spend 25 points; each item in the pantry is marked with a colored sticker to indicate the item’s point value.

9. Qualifications Paw’s Pantry is based on the honor system: if an IUPUI member feels the need to use the pantry, he or she will be allowed to – no questions asked. Paw’s Pantry is just here to help.

8 best places to see the sunset at IUPUI

Indiana has no shortage of beautiful sunsets, especially when the sky is the backdrop to IUPUI’s campus and Indy’s skyline. Here are some of the best places on campus for you to catch one of Indiana’s grand sunsets:

1. Gateway garage

The top level Gateway parking garage, located just off of Michigan Street on the east side of campus, is a great place to view the sunset.

2. Cavanaugh Hall

Climb all the way up to the fourth floor of Cavanaugh Hall, and you’ll be sure to find a stunning view of the sky when facing westward at dusk.

3. Vermont Street garage

The highest level of the Vermont Street garage, which is adjacent to the Campus Center, has stunning views of the sky, especially looking west during the time the sun sets.

4. University Library

On the fourth floor of University Library there are several study rooms that have views facing west, perfect for studying and catching an Indiana masterpiece in the sky.

5. Blackford street garage

The Blackford street garage is located – you guessed it – right off Blackford Street near the Gateway garage. Be sure to head to the top level to catch the sunset.

6. Four corners patio

Known as “the four corners” on campus (the area that connects four unique buildings: Taylor Hall, Kelley/SPEA, University Library, and Education/Social Work), the patio immediately west of the four corners has views of the courtyard down below and the beautiful sky above.

7. Barnhill garage

Another parking garage on campus and another amazing view of the sun setting, when you make your way to the top level of the garage.

8. Campus Center

On the fourth floor of the IUPUI Campus Center, there is a window facing westward that provides stellar views of Indiana’s sunsets.

8 signs of spring at IUPUI

Spring has officially sprung on campus! Farewell winter and hello beautiful, spring flowers.

1. Green grass galore

There’s plenty of green grass everywhere on campus.

2. Less activity in the gerbil tubes

With warmer weather, there is significantly less activity in the skywalks that keep students warm in the winter months.

3. Flowers everywhere

Have you noticed the beautiful blooms popping up all over campus? Look for the pink, yellow, and purple flowers that are covering campus lately.

4. Warm enough to cycle

The warmer weather has caused many to pull their bikes out again in order to get to class faster. Students have also been taking advantage of the Pacers Bikeshare, which has several stations spread throughout campus.

5. Budding trees

Beautiful buds have become more prevalent on the trees across campus, proving to be a sure sign that spring is in the air!

6. Rain boots

Put your snow boots away and pull out those rain boots, Jags! Time to splash through the puddles in style while you walk across campus.

7. Iced coffee, iced tea

Trade your hot coffee and warm tea in for a sweet, iced treat. The weather is warmer, which means that it is time for the coffee and tea to get colder!

8. April showers

…bring May flowers! Though we already have some flowers popping up on campus, be ready for some rain showers and thunderstorms during the next month. Don’t forget your umbrella!

2. Nap Pods (2016)

Nap pods scattered around campus for the sleepy? It sounds a little too good to be true! …and it was, as the nap pods and complementary cats came to IUPUI on April Fools’ Day in 2016.

3. Jags Cab (2017)

Late to class and need a ride? Rely on Jags Cab and be driven to class in Jaguar-style by a noteworthy IUPUI faculty or staff member. But remember, this new service was offered only on April Fools’ Day 2017.

Staying in the Indianapolis area for spring break? Round up your friends and plan a road trip to one of these spots that are all within a day’s drive of Indy:

Located in southern Indiana, Clifty Falls has a variety of hiking trails and nature walks for all intensity levels.

Located in Brown County, Nashville has an abundance of cute shops and mouth-watering restaurants strung along its quaint, downtown streets.

8 things you didn’t know about Jagathon

Jagathon is IUPUI’s Dance Marathon, where IUPUI students stand for hours to raise money and awareness for Riley Hospital for Children. Here are just a few things you probably didn’t know about the IUPUI DM:

1. Large, larger, largest

Jagathon is the largest student-led organization on campus, as well as the largest student-led philanthropic initiative.

2. A long-standing, long-dancing history

Jagathon is the second longest running program in the state, right behind IU’s dance marathon.

3. $410K

In Jagathon’s 15-year history, IUPUI’s dance marathon has raised over $410,000.00 FTK (for the kids).

4. Setting records

IUPUI’s dance marathon set a registrant record in 2016 with 950+ individuals registered. Also in 2016, Jagathon set a program record of fundraising $140,049.94.

5. Top 25

Jagathon is among the top 25 collegiate dance marathon fundraiser programs across the United States.

6. Inaugural Day of Miracles

Jagathon had its first Day of Miracles in 2016, and rose over $24,000 in 24 hours.

7. Miracle Week

During last year’s Miracle Week, over 550 people registered for Jagathon in one day.

8. Dance (half) marathon

Jagathon will be 13.1 hours long in 2017, resembling a half marathon distance.
