Wow… Paris was amazing. Actually, amazing is a total understatement.
Yeah? So...you and the soulmate spent the holiday in the City of Love. Would I be wrong to assume there was a lot of bow chicka wow wowing happening?

a new year // jivy
[Ivy couldn’t even begin to guess what his surprise was, and she didn’t want to, really. She was simply impressed that he’d found the time to plan any sort of surprise, and the trip had been so good, she was sure whatever this was would only make it better.] I am definitely not sober enough to try and figure out what this is, so I’m just going to settle for being excited. [Glad to be back and away from the desire to grab his hand, Ivy kicked off her heels at the door with a sigh of relief.] I’m going to start by changing. [She gestured at the metallic dress she was wearing before disappearing into her own room, taking a moment to let her head stop spinning from both the alcohol and how strange it still was to be in separate rooms. Replacing her outfit with shorts and a tanktop, Ivy even went so far as to sit on her bed and twist her hair up into a ponytail. As midnight approached, she felt oddly… nervous. Which wasn’t a feeling she entertained often. But she knew what he wanted, a kiss, and truthfully, she hadn’t decided if that would be a good idea yet. Her curiosity for this surprise won out over her nerves though, and she returned to the living room, plopping down on the sofa with a relieved sigh at being out of her heels. Sitting up when Jake came back, she sat up excitedly, clapping her hands together.] Yes, please. Gimme.
Don’t get too excited. I like your expectations nice and low so I have a chance at meeting them. [Instead of sitting next to Ivy on the sofa, Jake moved to the opposite side of the coffee table in front of Ivy and knelt on the floor.] Okay, so this is super lame and we might be too old for it, but...I was thinking about you this morning and how I still hadn’t figured out what I want for the new year and I remember a long time ago you told me you and your dad used to create wish bags together. So... [Jake finally pulled the plastic bag from behind his back and set it on the coffee table, pulling out the paper bags along with markers, colored pencils, glue sticks sand glitter.] I thought you could maybe show me? They can be wishes or goals or whatever. But...if we’re doing them together, we have to share everything we’re hoping for in 2014. [As much as he and Ivy both sort of goal-driven and worked hard to get everything they wanted, they rarely ever made plans together or talked about their future in any concrete way. Jake had learned long ago to never make plans that depended on someone else being around. People weren’t dependable and trusting his future happiness in someone else’s hands or in plans that could fall through wasn’t something he jumped at the opportunity to do. But he was slowly beginning to realize that the blurry future might be the cause of some of the problems he was having giving Ivy what she wanted. And he genuinely wanted to hear what Ivy wanted for the new year. So when he’d remembered the wish bags that morning, it’d seemed like a good idea.] So...you in? If you think it’s too lame then I can totally spend the next hour trying to get into your pants, but you know, I thought it might be cool to see if we’re on the same page.

[For Ivy, this trip had been about giving Jake what he wanted for his favorite holiday, and to see things from his point of view a little bit more. They didn’t address their issues at all, and although when she went to sleep at night it all still hovered there, they had so much fun during their days that it was hard to find it as stressful as she had in the past few weeks. This trip convinced her further that they were starting to find the balance between the two opposite sides of the coin that they both wanted, and it made her feel a lot better. Her lifted spirits and level of intoxication made her okay with leaving.] Yeah, we can go. Just let me settle the tab. [Eyebrows raising in surprise, Ivy had no idea what he could have up his sleeve considering they’d been together the whole trip and she’d organized all their activities. Not commenting about the sex or romance thing, she smirked instead.] Of course you were thinking about me. Let’s go. [Stopping by the bar to pay the tab, wincing a little as she imagined her father’s reaction to seeing the bar on the statements even though she was legal to drink here, Ivy stepped into his side, not feeling like it was appropriate to take his hand but wanting to stay close to him anyway. It was warm outside the club with a nice breeze, and she crossed her arms even though she wasn’t cold.] Do you have secret connections in Cabo that I don’t know about?
[Jake stepped back and let Ivy grab the tab. As much as he’d joked about her paying his entire way, Jake had picked up a few meals here and there over the course of their trip. While there was a vague thought in the back of his head that he might want to save his money for the next school year when she’d be away in New York, it was so far off and Jake didn’t have any immediate travel plans that he wasn’t really concerned with blowing all the cash he had and he was almost there with the cash he’d spent on his surprise for Ivy. Once they were outside, he led her back to the villa she’d rented for them.] I have absolutely zero connections in Cabo, but I know how to Google and pick up supplies for a surprise. [Neither of them had wanted to drunkenly deal with transportation on New Years Eve, so the club they’d chosen wasn’t very far from where they were staying and for the most part it was a comfortable walk. While being able to see all of the stars in the night sky and hear the ocean made for a romantic night, the physical distance between them was a gentle reminder of the status of their relationship and Jake was honestly grateful to arrive at their villa. He turned on the lights and toed off his shoes at the door before turning to Ivy.] Okay, so chill out on the sofa for a bit or get a drink or whatever. The stuff is in my room, I’ll bring it out. [It only took Jake a few minutes in his room gathering the supplies before he was walking back out into the living room with his hands hidden behind his back.] Ready?
a new year // jivy
[Overall, it’d been a good night, a good week. Just as Jake had suggested, Ivy had planned all sorts of activities in Cabo that kept them busy, busy enough that with all of the fun they were having there wasn’t much time to focus on everything wrong between the two of them. And tonight, New Years Eve, they were celebrating it just the way he’d imagined they would before he left Lima. While some tiny part of him had maybe thought of planning something romantic to sweep her off her feet and into his bed, this was the better option. The party was loud and fun, the music good enough to dance to and the drinks strong enough to push them just over the edge of tipsy. It was an hour or so before the new year though when Jake pulled Ivy close and spoke near her ear, loud enough to be heard over the music.] Do you wanna get out of here? [Even if Jake had woke up with every intention of ringing in the new year in a crowd full of people just as drunk as he was, through the course of the day, it felt less and less right.] I sort of have a surprise for you. It’s not sex! Or anything romantic really. [He promised hurriedly so she wouldn’t jump to conclusions.] But I was thinking about you this morning and...it might be something you like?

Ivy: You're mushier than me sometimes but sure, whatever you say!
Jake: I plead the fifth. And thank you for acknowledging that I'm always right. It's only taken you a year of you knowing me.
texts // jivy
Ivy: Blah blah blah logistics and specifics. Accept my sap when I offer it.
Jake: Psh, this is a no sap relationship. We're both too badass for the mushy stuff, yeah?
texts // jivy
Ivy: You should know I always need you.
Jake: Hmm, I was gonna say I do know. But, come to think of it, need is a very strong word. You'd live without me, miserably of course because I'm an amazing person to be around. But you'd live.

Ivy: :)
Ivy: I promise to always be in your life. I can keep that promise because I need you in my life. It's a totally selfish promise.
Jake: Not the promise I want, but I'll take it. It's nice being needed. :)
texts // jivy
Ivy: Two of my favorite qualities about you, obviously.
Ivy: Lucky for me indeed. I know. I wish I could promise you that, but even if I did, you wouldn't believe me anyway. That's good because you shouldn't.
Jake: I'm sure.
Jake: I don't know, I might. At the very least, I'd be able to hang it over your head if you ever broke your promise. And I have a feeling justifiable anger would be way more enjoyable than just feeling hurt in that situation.
texts // jivy
Ivy: They will never hear this ever so it doesn't matter. Maybe, maybe not. But I got there faster because of you.
Ivy: That does make sense. But you said it yourself, I'll always be yours. Clearly it's possible that might not always be us in a relationship. You're still my best friend though and that's just as important to me as you being my boyfriend would be. Actually, that might be more important. As long as you're still in my life, the rest of the stuff just kind of falls into place. I don't want you to worry about ruining anything, be it a relationship or just a day we're spending together when no matter what happens, I'm always going to be in your life somehow. You can't get rid of me even if you try. Unless you commit murder or something, so don't do that.
Jake: Fair enough. I'll take credit for being impatient and bossy.
Jake: Lucky for you, I'm too pretty for jail. I'd never risk it. And I know you'll always be in my life, but I want you in it in a certain way I guess. I'm trying not to worry about it so much though.
texts // jivy
Ivy: I try not to think about it that much either, and when I do, I really do try to be a bit positive about it. If I'm at Juilliard, being away from you is going to suck. But at least I'm always going to know that the only reason I'm there in the first place is because one night when I heard your voice for the first time, you told me I should go for it.
Jake: You're such a sap, Hamilton. What would all of your other friends think if they heard you now? As much as I love taking credit for things, I like to think you would have gotten to the same place on your own.
Jake: You know...even though I try not to think about it, I do worry about it. I think it's why I don't really like ruining our time together sometimes, you know? Like, I know I'm always gonna feel the way I do about you. And I know in a way you'll always be mine. But us together, as a couple has always felt temporary. It turned out to be temporary. Even if we get back together, it might feel the same way. And idk, maybe it's stupid because we're soulmates and it's literally a permanent sort of thing but I don't know what we'll be to each other a month from now, let alone a year or two and it all just makes me want us to have a good time while we can.
texts // jivy
Ivy: True. Relax, I have to actually graduate first. And in order to graduate, I have to actually get into Juilliard. That is way down the road. It's probably always going to suck, isn't it?
Jake: This is true. And yeah, idk, I guess. I try not to think too far into the future. This sucks, next year will suck, a lot of things will always be sucky. It's depressing to think about.
texts // jivy
Ivy: I can't protest too much there, I am pretty hot. You're not at my level language wise, sorry to say it. Spanish was a given growing up and French was just because Paris is the best place ever. You know, if I ever dance in a company, I'd want to dance in Paris. That would be amazing. Making baby Ivy's dreams come true.
Jake: The hottest. Fair enough. Dancing in Paris...I wouldn't get to see you very often. I guess I'll get used to that next year. I'm getting used to it now.
texts // jivy
Ivy: Nothing at this exact moment, it was just a scenario. I'm not flirting, you are. Of course you do. Well if you're going to keep traveling with me you may as well meet me on my level.
Jake: Hmm, sure. I can't help the way I talk to hot girls. It's instinctual. Wow, meeting you at your level implies I'm not at your level, which I'm totally in disagreement about.
texts // jivy
Ivy: I know I'm right. It does make certain things easier but sometimes I actually do need you to focus. Flirting with me. You just like it when I speak other languages.
Jake: What do you want me to focus on, babe? Didn't realize we were flirting, just thought we were having a conversation. I do like listening to you and I also like having an excuse to watch your mouth. But, hey, learning another language might be useful even if everyone I speak to on a daily basis speaks English.
