interviewed wil wagner and wrote about the smith street band for STRINE WHINE. there’s another, uh, eight pages of the above in the thing itself. here it is.
When Soapbox was released, I thought it was mind-shatteringly amazing, and waited with childish excitement for major publications to review it. None of the biggest ones did, not even the NME, which had written about Hold Fast. I had to face it: I just wasn’t going to see the Crookes on Pitchfork.
But in an alternate universe, in which major indie outlets did write about the Crookes, what would they say? I surprisingly had to do no bribing and/or cajoling to convince the fantastic Jake Cleland of The Vine (and Pitchfork), to write this amazing mock review for OWOB about anglophilia, youth culture, and the nostalgia attached to the Crookes. (And seriously, how realistic does this look?! Pitchfork should just publish it.)
“Now England is sunk and America is strangling under its own flatulent concerns but it’s encouraging that these Atlantean artefacts can cross the seas and stoke a little romance in the saps still waiting for ‘em.”
9.7, best new review.
think the best review i ever wrote was a fake one.
What Would You Know About Saving the World?
The core of the Witcher 3 is in three parts: one, killing evil things; two, seducing and being seduced by preternaturally beautiful sorceresses; three, charging through verdant fields and wartorn mires between errands for people with a helluva lot more influence on the world than you have, on horsies.
a type of feeling
- finishing reading the lord of the rings for the first time
- watching a midday movie during school holidays and then walking, dazed, through an empty house
- a neighbourhood best friend moving out of the house across the street to another state
- an episode from scrubs’ fifth season
- finishing watching fullmetal alchemist for the first time
- trying to sleep after a difficult conversation in the dining room during which i showed no emotion
- changing high schools
- 2am, alone, after a funeral
- a text sent from a late bus after walking in on something i wish i hadn’t
- an email sent from a hotmail address after a bad night on king street
- unforeseen tears on the side of a bed
- finishing the witcher 3
IN THE SEVENTH ISSUE OF STRINE WHINE: Reviews of releases from Nervous Trend, Fresh Hex, VENUS II, Sampa the Great, Mikey Young x Jess Ribeiro, Primitive Calculators, Empat Lima, HTMLFlowers, and Skybox. MEREDITH'S GOLDEN BOY: The Meredith Music Festival and its sister soiree, Golden Plains, are healthy. Their competitors are dying left right and centre. Why? A lot of it’s got to do with how Meredith and GP are run - emphasis on personal responsibility, communal care, respect - but one part of it is that they keep booking the best lineups. Woody McDonald has been largely responsible for the last few years. Here’s some of what it took for him to get there. A WEEKEND AT AUNTY'S: 25 years in and the annual Meredith Music Festival, like a lotta 25 year olds, has yet to lose its vigor to maturity. Unlike a lotta 25 year olds, it’s got a real solid handle on its shit. This is how it rang in its Silver Jubilee. FLAG-BURNIN', RULE-BREAKIN', KOCHIE-FUCKIN' DICK DIVER: Following two shows at The Tote over Christmas - their only shows in Australia for 2015 - not even Dick Diver know where Dick Diver are going next. Who cares? Their latest record, Melbourne, Florida, is their best yet, a totally gripping record of bitterness, cultural criticism, isolation, longing, rebellion, and self-satisfaction. It fuckin’ shreds, too. Rupert Edwards, Al McKay, Al Montfort and Stephanie Hughes are some of Australia’s most precise and imaginative writers - not just in music - and musicians, and even though Rupe once said “There are no love letters,” referring to his own writing, this is kind of a love letter to that. New issues out every month. Email tracks, records, gigs, praise, hateful epistles and anything else to [email protected]. Physical editions coming NEXT MONTH!!!!! Tell your friends.

Had a pretty good time explaining Courtney Barnett’s sartorial hometown references and getting everyone in Melbourne to talk about how much they love her.

all anyone i know is talking about right now is meredith. there is still an age to go until then, it feels like, with paradise and melbourne music week and more in between, but when i’m done listening to this, my favourite set from its sister festival golden plains earlier this year, i will be one hour and thirty seconds closer.
For the last four days I have abandoned my social life in order to write 1-2 album reviews each day. I really have about 15 more reviews to do in the next couple of weeks but I can only write for a few hours a day. That’s all the steam I got in me at the moment. Then the fog descends. Christ. It’s a terrible feeling. Knock a couple reviews out by 10am, figure I got a whole day left, at this rate I could run down the whole load by beer time. Nope. End up watching a bunch of TV and tweeting embarrassing non-sequiturs. Can’t even write questions for all the interviews I set up the other day thinking administration might give me a restart. Nope again. When it comes real close to that deadline I’ll start chain smoking and then the real work’ll begin. I always finish on time, sure, only leaving most of my days wasted in the mean time. I oughta try some of that modafinil, hey.
Ordered my #GrizCoat too late for Halloween but that doesn’t mean I can’t wear it for dates, parties, and job interviews!
it’s nearly time again!
