she moves to rest her chin on his shoulder, smiling. “it will be fun! plus we get to have hotel sex and that’s always a plus,” she laughs lightly.

“i know you are,” she says, locking their fingers together. “it’s just with all this talk about the carnival, we both need to be extra careful, you know?” she says, leaning into him and resting her head on his shoulder. “i can’t lose you… that’s what i’m saying.”

after a moment of thought, she grins. “alright, you have a deal,” she steals another kiss before getting out of the car. “c’mon in, you gotta help me carry all this shit,” she smiles back at him. once inside, she grabs a couple of plastic bags and gathers the ingredients she needs. handing him the crock pot with a bag of cans inside of it, she grins, “do you have anything to drink? you wanna take some soda with us, too?”
he gets out of the car and follows her inside, letting her pile things into his waiting arms. ❝ i have beer, and vee has some frou-frou wine. if you want soda, i can grab a few. ❞ he wasn’t joking when he said there wasn’t anything in the house. he was so bad at remembering to buy groceries. if it weren’t for val stopping at the store to get bags of frozen nuggets and fries, they’d have starved years ago.

“of course. it’ll be fun… nice opportunity, too, you know… if you’re careful,” she grins. “i wonder who all is going,” she hums in thought, looking up. “have you heard anyone say they’re going yet? besides us, of course,” she nudges him with her elbow and smiles.
❝ i already forbade val from going, not that she was that interested anyway, but i think i know a few people that are going. ❞ he said, smiling back at her. ❝ i’m always careful, baby. you know that. ❞ he says with a wink.

smile graces her features and head cocks to the side as she recognizes the shapes immediately. she grins over at him and bites her lip. “don’t worry, i’ll make plenty for your second and third dishes and some tomorrow. headphones, huh?” she smirks as she leans over for another kiss, this one deeper. “you know… my bed’s kinda lonely. i wouldn’t wanna keep val waiting for us too long, but…” she raises a brow. “it’s an option, she says, her own hand squeezing his thigh gently.
❝ i’ll keep your bed company tonight, okay? ❞ he asks, wrapping his fingers around her hand. he really did need to feed val, after all. sure, she was an adult, she could make her own food, but he didn’t want to leave her to fend for herself. he’d been taking care of her so long, it felt wrong to not keep doing it. ❝ help me take care of dinner and i’ll spend as much time keeping your bed warm as you want. ❞

“fuck the other people. i’ll be there. don’t you wanna be stuck in a hotel with me, babe?”

he responds exactly as she wanted, pulling her in for that kiss. she loves to tease him like that. she hums against his lips before pulling away to drive. she laughs lightly at the way he scrunches his nose and nods, making a mental note about val and meatloaf. “mmhmm… and i make the best chili. i’ll make plenty so you guys can have some tomorrow, too. it’s even better the next day,” she adds with a wink. “the weather is perfect for it,” she beams. she loves fall. it’s her favorite season. she wishes valentine’s day was in the fall because that’s the only thing that could make it better, truthfully. “what time does val go to bed?” she asks with a smirk, pulling into her place.
❝ you know what else is even better the next day? ❞ he asks, looking over at her. he rests his hand on her thigh, index finger drawing hearts all over. hearts for zoe. he’d give her them all. this was the closest he’d ever gotten to loving someone. that is, if he was even capable of love. ❝ you can try to make extra, but that just means i’ll have more to have for seconds tonight. val doesn’t have a bedtime, but she does have headphones and an ipod. ❞ he says, returning her smirk.

“what if i don’t really believe myself?” she frowns, looking down for a moment before taking in a deep breath. “i guess i better, though, huh? or maybe not with a statement like that,” she laughs it off, completely oblivious to his dark thoughts.
❝ i don’t think the universe takes into account whether or not you believe in yourself. ❞ he sure as hell didn’t, and it was him who she should really be worried about.

“i do not,” she grins over at him, giving him a kiss on the cheek before buckling herself in. “adulting is definitely a technical term, and it’s so sweet that you don’t wanna poison us,” she smiles earnestly, her heart warming at his sweet words. pulling out of the parking lot, her eyes are on the road, but her mind is on jake. “so what do you want for dinner? i have a few things at my house. stuff for chili, meatloaf, spaghetti… quesadillas, i think…” she tilts her head slightly to the side in thought before eyes are on him again. “what would you like me to make?”
❝ i see how it is. no trust in jakey. ❞ he teases, catching her hand with his and pulling her a little closer, bringing her in for a kiss. a kiss on the cheek? not enough. would never be enough. ❝ i especially don’t want to poison val. you know how much that kid means to me. oh, and you, too. ❞ he teases again, wrinkling his nose. ❝ hmm... well, val won’t eat meatloaf. chili sounds good. isn’t that supposed to be one of those comfort foods you eat when it gets cold out? she’d like that. ❞

bright eyes widen at the mention of getting a gun and she shakes her head quickly. “no. absolutely not. no guns in my apartment are allowed. i’m a very peaceful person… even though it does seem like you need to be on your guard in this town,” she shudders, looking around before her gaze settles back on him. “i’ll be fine, i’m sure of it.” she’s trying to convince herself to believe her words… and failing.
❝ alright, no gun. ❞ he says, chuckling lightly. poor thing. what an easy target she would be. in this town, that was never a good thing. ❝ the moment you think you’re safe, that’s when your death certificate is signed. haven’t you seen any horror movie? i’m almost certain you just doomed yourself, sweetheart. ❞

“I doubt I’ll miss much. Everyone around here will talk about it anyway.” Like parties, he couldn’t quite get into the spirit. “That is a plus. You have something to look forward to then, even if you’re surrounded by people from this town.”
