          “ A FERTILITY doctor ?  don’t you guys usually work outside of hospitals with all kinds of science-fiction-y equipment?  what brings you here ? ”  she wasn’t even going to dignify that last piece with an answer.  maybe she was nice, but admitting that would be opening too many doors to further conversation, and after the day she had, she would rather not.

Jake shrugged a bit and said, “I like breaking all the rules.” And with that, the movie finally started and Jake fell silent so that they could watch.

Casey was discharged the following day, and Jake returned to his routine after she was gone. Her memory lingered on in the back of his mind. He considered picking up his phone to call her and see how she was doing. But that was probably weird. So he pushed it out of his mind.

On a particular afternoon when he was off of work and had picked up Penny from school, he was forced to do good on a promise. Penny knew that if she got a 100 on her weekly spelling test, the five-year-old was allowed a treat from Starbucks. And so, with her paper in hand and a wide grin on her face, Penny handed her father the test and said, “Let’s goooooo!”

Jake laughed, “Okay, okay.... Wow, you even got the bonus word right? “CAUGHT” is one of the outlaw words. Nice job!” The kindergartner shrugged, “You’ve made me smart,” she smiled up at him.

Jake smirked, “I guess you can have two treats then,” he opened up the door to the nearest Starbucks and ushered her in.

Upon getting on line, he realized they were standing behind a very familiar blonde. Smiling slightly, Jake said to her, “Fancy meeting you here, Ms. Novak.”

          SHE STARED at the soup, a part of her nagging to eat it, though the message seemed to get lost somewhere along the way.  arms felt too heavy to lift, and her mother-in-law was right.  nothing felt like it could go down.  everything hurt too much to even try.  the very thought of food made her stomach churn.  casey shook her head.  “ i’m not hungry, ”  she replied softly.

“Ayy, venga pues, necesitas algo en el estomago,” Ava fussed a bit more and picked up the bowl along with the spoon. Putting some soup in the deep spoon, she blew on it to cool it off, before bringing it to her lips, “This way you don’t need to lift your arms. Open up, mija.”

My Lover’s Got Humour || Jake and Casey

         “ IT’S A NICE release.  really gives me perspective sometimes, ”  she admitted, running a brush through her her hair to continue getting herself ready.  “ so if you want to come, you’re more than welcome.  i just assumed you didn’t have any interest. ”

Jake nodded, “I’d love to. Let me just get dressed. I showered after my jog earlier,” he smiled and got out of bed where he had been reading the latest medical journal.

Walking over to his closet, he stepped inside and picked out a very respectable suit and tie outfit. He was ready within two minutes. He went to gel his hair, and after that slipped on his nice dress shoes. “Do I need to bring anything?”

          “ I’M SURE YOU’RE NOT.  i just care a lot about your daughter and her welfare.  i’m sure you know, she’s been through a lot. ”  she fixed her gaze to match perfectly with his, a little stonier than is probably necessary, considering she’s the one barging in.  although, she must admit, jake’s stunned horror bodes well for her opinion of him ;  gives her the impression that he would never consider something so heinous.  then again, she’s seen better actors come and go from her courtroom.  “ we both want what’s best for her. ”

Jake listened to what the woman before him said and whispered, “Thank you. I know I probably don’t have much... Ownership to say that yet, but thank you for taking care of my daughter, even if it has been for a short amount of time. I’m glad someone has.”

Nodding slightly though, Jake replied, “I know, she has been. She’ll be seeing a child psychologist that handles cases similar to hers, her name is Dr. Gillian Parker. I’ll be seeing a therapist as well to help us get through this.. To help us bond and really understand each other. Help me so that I don’t unintentionally do something that may hinder Maria’s progress... What I’m trying to get at, Miss Novak is that I’m trying. For my daughter, I am trying. And had I been made aware of her existence long before any of this happened, I can assure you, I would have walked through hell to keep her or any child from going through that.”

Pausing, Jake added, “And, Miss Novak, you are more than welcome to come by any time. I’m sure Maria will need a familiar face. I don’t want her to completely shut me out because she’s going from one man’s home to another. I know I need to build my trust with her. You being around may make that easier.”

          REDDENED EYES glanced up at ava as she entered, tracking her moves.  in the back of her mind, a voice nagged at her to say something, even a simple greeting, but her muscles didn’t respond.  nothing came out.  even as jake left her side, she felt utterly catatonic.  her body felt heavy, and it took every ounce of energy she had just to roll over and sit herself up against the pillows.  casey sniffed.  “ ava … ”  that was it, as far as she got.  what was left to say, anyway ?

“I’m here, sweetheart,” Ava said softly and patted her hand. “I brought you some of my famous soup. You need toe at something, okay?” she let go of Casey’s hand and went to serve her some on a glass dish. She moved it in front of Casey on the hospital table.

Whispering softly, Ava said in Spanish, “Tienes que comer, mija... You need to eat, my dear. I know what pain you’re in. I know it feels like nothing can get past the knot in your throat to reach your stomach, but that’s why this is a blended broth.. Vamos, eh?” she ushered Casey gently.

          TONGUE PRESSING INTO the roof of her mouth, casey forced herself to look him in the eye.  “ this isn’t an official visit, ”  she admitted, as if that somehow made it an ethical one.  but she had to hope, at least, if he is a good guy, he would appreciate someone looking out for his daughter.  maybe.  “ i’m not with children’s services, i’m here on my own.  i represented maria in the trial against her captor.  i’ve gotten to know her very well over the last few weeks, and i needed to be certain of what kind of situation i was sending her back to. ”

Frowning, Jake sat down on the couch and rubbed his face, “I,... What do you want to know? I’ll tell you, you’re not sending her back to... You’re not sending her back to anywhere. She’s not going to be...” he felt nauseous just thinking about it.

“... She’s not going... I’m not doing that. I’m not that kind of man,” Jake wasn’t even sure how to say that properly.

          “ I MEANT what kind of doctor is that.  i wasn’t fishing for compliments.  although i’m happy to prove you wrong. ”  too bad she was only half-joking.

“Oh. I make babies for a living,” he oversimplified and shrugged.

Chuckling, Jake shook his head, “You can’t fool me, Miss Novak.”

          MUSCLES TENSED with the touch, but she didn’t push him away.  her body remained perfectly still, eyes squeezing shut.  she hadn’t even thought she wanted to be a mother anymore until the strip turned pink.  maybe she didn’t want it enough.  maybe that’s why this was happening.  “ i just want to go home, ”  she whimpered, even though she knew perfectly well that wasn’t happening.  she just had major surgery … and unless she could throw herself into her work or have some kind of distraction, home might actually be worse.

“I know, I know...” Jake whispered as he held her even closer. They stayed like that for hours. It wasn’t until the room’s door opened that Jake looked up. He noticed his mother walking in with two large bags, one obviously filled with food. Ava’s heart snapped instantly as she saw her son and her, well, Casey was almost like a daughter at this point. Placing everything down on a nearby table quietly, Ava walked over and tenderly kissed Casey’s head before kicking Jake out of the room for a little while.

Once he was gone, Ava pulled a chair closer to Casey’s bed and took her hand carefully, “Ay, mija,...” she whispered tenderly.

My Lover’s Got Humour || Jake and Casey

          SOME HABITS DIE HARD.  casey wasn’t the most spiritual of people in her every day life.  she didn’t say grace at every meal or pray like she was taught to every night.  but she was raised by very catholic parents, sent to various catholic schools throughout her childhood, forced to sit through hours of mass sometimes more than once a week.  and that’s not to say she had never questioned her faith.  almost every day working s.v.u., she wondered how a God could exist and allow such atrocities to occur in the world.  and when she was censured for trying to attain justice for just one of those atrocities, she had almost given up her beliefs entirely.  everything she worked for was gone.  all the good she had done, tarnished, and she was kept from the one thing that still mattered.

          BUT ULTIMATELY she found her way back to her path.  with no where else to go, she wandered into a church service one sunday morning, just looking for some of the familiar comfort she had felt as a child.  it was different from what she was used to, freer, more open.  and it made her uncomfortable, at first, but it also gave her a place to be.  volunteering and pitching in gave her some kind of purpose … and that was so desperately needed for her to survive those three years.

          SHE TURNED to face jake, brows shooting up.  “ i didn’t think you were interested, ”  casey responded, shrugging.  “ it’s just a liberal service uptown.  a lot more casual than what i grew up with. ”  although that didn’t stop her from dressing up.  some things really couldn’t be changed.  “ everyone is really friendly and we do a lot of community work.  you’re welcome to join me if you’re interested … ”

Listening to her response, Jake nodded, “Sounds interesting. I’m just wondering because you’re always running around to do things for them. Figured it’d be a nice way to give back. Plus… I don’t know, you always seem lighter, happier when you come back. Recharged almost.”

Jake shrugged a bit, “Yeah? You’d be okay with that?”

          “ ––––– -  A WHAT ? ”  casey shifted her gaze back up, looking him in the eye ;  challenging his last statement without actually saying a word.  she might have been hopped up on painkillers, but she knew better than to consider herself lovely at this moment in time.

Jake chuckled, “Don’t look so suspicious or surprised. I know that underneath that aloof-ness you‘re giving me is a very lovely person with a very charming personality, filled with charisma and passion for what she does.”

          CASEY SWALLOWED, pressing quivering lips together.  fists balled around hospital bed sheets, nostrils flaring as she stifled another sob.  “ i’m sorry, ”  she repeated.

Jake couldn’t stand it at that point. Standing, he carefully slipped into the bed beside her and wrapped his arms around her, “Case, it’s okay, baby...” He hid her face in his chest and rubbed her back. “It’s okay... We’re going to get through this. Together. I’m not going anywhere.” His own tears disappeared into her hair.

My Lover’s Got Humour || Jake and Casey

Jake’s Sundays were usually used for relaxing. It was the day he took to see his family, spend time with them and prepare for their Sunday night dinner. It was the day he never, ever went to work because it was dedicated to the people he loved. Naturally, when he and Casey became a solid couple, she was included in this. They’d have breakfast in bed and then Casey would get ready and leave... To church?

Jake couldn’t remember the last time he stepped foot in a church. It was definitely not that he did not believe. He created life on a daily basis after all. How could he not believe in a creator? However, things got busy and now.. Well, he wasn’t as close to God as he would’ve liked to be. 

One Sunday though, as he watched Casey get ready, he asked, “What’s your church like? You never really talk about it, and I’ve watched you get read to go for the last five months and...” he shrugged.

Jake opened the door a moment later, drying his hands on a towel, “Ms. Novak?” he asked and then opened the door, “C’mon in. How can I help you?” Letting her in, Jake asked, “Can I get you anything?”

          HAZEL EYES glanced over the space, taking everything in to judge whether or not it was fit for a child.  she had to admit, it was a lot nicer than her own apartment, with its chaotic organization and cramped space.  but that wouldn’t be enough to convince her.  “ no, thank you.  i just came to discuss maria. ”

Jake nodded, “Sure... What would you like to discuss?” He asked, leading her over to the couch, he motioned for her to take a seat. “Children’s services and her therapist were here yesterday, they said everything looked great. Am I missing something?” Now Jake was concerned.

Jake felt his heart snap all over again at her shaky remark. He leaned forward and very gently took some hair out of her face.

“Shh, it was not your fault, Case. It was so not your fault, sweetheart. These things… As absolutely horrible as they are… As horrible as losing our… baby is,” he tried to swallow past the knot in his throat, “It is not your fault.” Jake finished with firm conviction.

“You had a blood clot.. One we weren’t aware of, and it traveled up into the umbilical cord… Do you know that the chances of that are? It was not your fault,” he repeated.

         WIPING HER TEARS with the pillow, casey swallowed, attempting to stifle a sob.  she couldn’t do that again.  she only just stopped crying.  stomach churning. her head felt like it was about to implode.  “ i’m his mother, ”  she insisted.  “ i should have known something was wrong.  i should have known the cramps weren’t normal.  I … ”  her voice cracked, then faltered.  “ how can he just be gone, jake ? ”

Shaking his head, Jake’s strong face finally fell apart at her question, “I... I don’t know, sweetheart,” he whispered. The tears fell from his eyes quickly after that and he did nothing to stop them. “I wish.. I wish I knew.”

Jake looked over at her and raised a brow, “You just don’t want me to ask you any questions, huh Casey Novak?”

Chuckling a second later, he replied, “We’re from Southern California - Santa Monica area.”

          NO RESPONSE to the first question.  they both knew the answer already.  “ what brought you to new york ?  couldn’t get enough of that intoxicating scent of trash and diesel ? ”

“That, and there was a need for a double board certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist, and general surgeon,... So I took the position. I would have never met such a lovely person like you otherwise,” Jake charmed.

Jake frowned a bit as Casey pushed him away. He knew he couldn’t push her, though. It wouldn’t help anyone if he did. Besides, he knew her better than that. “Case…” he trailed off and sat down in the chair beside her bed, “I’ll be right here,…” he whispered, facing her.

          BURYING HER FACE into the pillow, she was quiet for awhile.  the way her mind seemed to buzz and halt all at once made it impossible to know exactly how much time had passed.  in fact, it was probably only a matter of minutes, but it felt like an eternity before she was able to speak again.  when she did, it came out as barely a mumble, and she didn’t bear look at him.  she couldn’t.  “ it was my fault. ”

“I am.. Practically raised my sisters,” he nodded and smiled a bit. “I think you’d like them a lot. They all moved out to here too,” Jake added.

          “ FOLLOWED YOU OUT, HUH ? ”  she asked, not all that interested but all too happy to keep the conversation away from herself.  “ where are you from ? ”
