JAMAICAN BASS ACCORDING TO.. G DUPPY

Head honcho of Raider Records, tipped as one of the best up-and-coming record labes of the moment, our boy G Duppy took some time to lay down this mix packed full of exclusives, forthcoming and fresh drops for your listening pleasure - We also managed to catch a few words from the man himself:

• Tell us a bit about your background in music?

I started djing in 1994. I was into jungle techno and would spend countless hours in my bedroom mixing the same records over and over. Skip forward around 20 years and I started making reggae mashups. Then around 2 years ago I started making my own tunes. I haven't had any training in music and can't play any instruments. I'm winging the music production big time but I'm learning fast and having lots of fun in the process. 

Running the label raider records is a huge part of what I do and I'm investing a lot of time and effort into it. We have had a very strong run of releases and have lots of exciting releases in the pipeline. Watch this space.

• Highest moments of your career/music journey so far?

When most people think of G Duppy they think of my remixes / blends / mashups whatever you prefer to call them. A few of my blends went viral on Soundcloud & YouTube but were taken offline and my soundcloud accounts were banned for breach of copyright. I had two previous soundcloud profiles each with well over 1 million plays. I released a remix of blurred lines shortly after the original dropped and that was getting some serious stats online. Also I did a blend of Ed Sheeran's thinking out loud on the sixth street riddim. That was covered and copied many times. People were bootlegging my bottleg. That's a good sign.

• How’s the ‘Jamaican Bass’ scene in your city/country and how do you see it pushing forward?

The U.K. Is definitely a hot spot for Jamaican Bass with many of the MCs from / living here. I think the scene is thriving and ever growing. Boomtown festival is a good example of how big the scene in the uk is. Even modern pop music has many elements of dancehall and reggae in it. I'm from the south west of the UK in Cornwall and the scene down here is very small but there is some great local talent such as konquering soundz, No ice cream sound, Titan sound and not forgetting backbeat sound system.

• Any future projects/events we should know about?

Release wise I have a collaboration with Fleck which is a remix of Taiwan MC's ‘Dem A Wonder’. The track is featured on this Jamaican Bass mix and is scheduled for a release soon. Fleck has been dropping it everywhere including his set at boomtown and said it's a real crowd pleaser. As part of the Raider Records crew, alongside Timbali & Rukus we did a night at The Attic in Bristol (UK) in August and it was a real fun night. We hope to do more shows at The Attic soon. Maybe make it an annual thing. I'm currently looking for DJ gigs so any promoters out there reading this if you like what you hear please give me a shout.

• Favourite food and/or recipe?

This is a tricky one because I like lots of different foods, non of which I know the recipe of :-/. However I can share my own Spag-Bol recipe. Ingredients : Minced steak meat Onion Green peppper Mushrooms Ragu sauce (other brands are available) Spaghetti First fry the onions till golden brown. Add the mushrooms and peppers and fry to your preference. Push the contents to the outside of the pan and add the meat to the middle. Cook the meat until brown then mix in the onion, peppers and mushrooms. Turn to a low heat. Add the sauce and leave to simmer for 30 minutes. Thank me later. HAHA

Jamaican Bass According To.. Origin One

We’re excited to welcome our boy Origin One to the ‘Jamaican Bass According To..’ mix series.  With a slew of releases on an enviable list of prominent labels and now a fully signed up member of the Nice Up! Records camp, Origin One has been putting in work over the years and it’s great to see that paying off.. it couldn’t happen to a nicer bloke.  We managed to grab a few moments from his busy schedule to have him do us an exclusive mix and say a few words:

Tell us a bit about your background in music?

I started making a lot of Jungle and Grime at about 15/16 this rolled over into me producing Dubstep when it first emerged, with the help of some of the Rubberdub family in Nottingham. We all moved to Holland when I was 19, where I released my first vinyl on Riddim and Culture records, then from there I’ve Just worked on as much music as possible, I worked on some Jungle stuff for Junglecat records, some Trip Hop/Neo-Soul stuff for Tru Thoughts, then more recently started working on my album for NICE UP! Records. In Nottingham I run a record Label and studio, and run events alongside that, the combination seems to take up the majority of my time. 
 Highest moments of your career/music journey so far?

I just feel to have been abroad to various places to play, is a blessing.  I used to play in the Netherlands a bit, and more recently I played at Soundwave for a few years, getting to play on their main stage and host a boat party. Last year I got to play in Italy for the first time, up in the hills, I think getting my music to people in other countries has topped it for me.

Hows the ‘Jamaican Bass’ scene in your city/country and how do you see it pushing forward?



I think Nottingham has always had a real strong roots influence, from the days of V rocket and Bands like the Naturalites, it’s always something I’ve had much respect and looked up to, even though I understand it’s not my generation. I’ve really appreciated the huge surge in Soca and bashment in mainstream music, traveling to Notting Hill carnival from a young age was always a huge influence. I love hearing the combination of cultures and sounds in bass music emerging, from not just Nottingham, but the whole UK scene atm.

Any future projects/events we should know about?



The forthcoming album (on NICE UP!) is my main project in the making, I’m just making sure I work with the right people and it sounds how I want it, There are various remixes along the way, I just have to be careful to not make too much music and focus on one thing for a while. Summers coming up, so I’m out quite a lot for festivals, so I want to get stuff wrapped up before that period hits.

Jamaican Bass According To.. MUVA (Soundtank Crew)

I recently had the great pleasure to connect with MUVA and his crew in their home-city of Wiener Neustadt, Austria where for my years they’ve been successfully forging a scene of bass-led Caribbean focused music and have found themselves as the pioneers in their corner of the globe. They have created their own success and have literally built their scene brick-by-brick by building their own incredible night-club (SUB), consistently hosting legendary global artists across both Reggae/Dancehall and D&B, creating their own studio space and subsequently releasing riddims as well as DJ’ing and amassing an enviable dubplate collection - these guys are doing it all.  SUB head-honcho, Soundtank Crew & Struttin Beats member and all round nice guy ‘MUVA’ took some time out from his busy schedule to answer a few questions and lay down a mix of some bass’ier tunes that he’s currently feeling.  Here’s what he had to say:

• Tell us a bit about your background in music?

I have been DJ’ing since 2001, played a lot of hiphop back in the day, stumbled upon reggae music and never left. Since then i am always on the search for the perfect bass line, no matter the sub genre - as long as its got the vibe reggae to it, i’m there. :)

• Highest moments of your career/music journey so far?

- Founding my own DJ collective with 3 good friends in 2003 called STRUTTIN BEATS (www.struttinbeats.com) - Building (2010-2012) and running the alternative hotspot in the eastern Austria area SUB club (www.sub.at) with the WALL OF BASS since 2012 - Booking Perfect Giddimani in 2013 for my 30th birthday - Standing at ‘STING 30’ 5m away from the stage and seeing SUPER CAT perform the first time live since long time - Releasing our first riddim in 2014 - the RETURN TO ROCKFORT (https://itunes.apple.com/at/album/return-to-rockfort-rock-riddim/id786635544)

• Hows the ‘Jamaican Bass’ scene in your city/country and how do you see it pushing forward?

There are few people identifying with reggae and its sub-genres in our area, mostly i gotta big up veterans like WEEDBEAT SOUND and SELECTA GREYHOUND which are running the ting for decades, its also good to see that our regular WAH GWAAN dance at SUB has vibes and the right attendance. Big Up all reggae fans!

• Any future projects/events we should know about?

Looking forward for our monthly WAH GWAAN Dances, there should be a ragga-jungle remix ep to be released 2017 and maybe one new riddim ;)

Jamaican Bass According To.. Think Tonk

For many decades, in different cycles, Manchester has been a hotbed of musical talent offering the world some of the biggest and most innovative musical creators ever known.  Currently Manchester is confidently celebrating another potent wave of creative and boundary pushing artists  with names like Dub Phizix, Chimpo, Levelz, Swing Ting, Red Eye HiFi etc and one such name thats been on the lips of those in the know is the mighty THINK TONK.  Expertly utilising their time-crafted Drum & Bass production techniques to build dancehall riddims, THINK TONK has instantly elevated the sound and in doing so has caught the well-tuned ear of some of the most credible ambassadors in the global scene, evidenced by already having signed and released two projects on the legendary ‘V-Recordings’ imprint as well as having showcase mixes broadcasted by Toddla T, DJ Target, Smutlee, Planet V etc. We’re super blessed to have secured some time in their busy schedule where they’ve kindly provided an exclusive ‘journey’ mix of musical influences past/present/future for our ‘Jamaican Bass According To..’ mix series.  We also managed to get a few words:

Tell us a bit about your background in music?

I followed a winding path though Hip-Hop, House, Techno, Acid House, Rave Jungle, Dnb, to Reggae, Dancehall, Bashment, Garage, Grime, Trap and all things bassy.  I made my first tunes on a Commodore Amiga with a Korg M1, Boss drum machine and Emu sampler in 1993. My first record was sequenced using the Amiga. I've had records out under various names over the years working with various labels such as Essential Platinum, Formation, Urban Takeover etc. Think Tonk is definitely a great place to arrive at after that journey. Its 90% vocal. so I write riddims. Then the other half of Tonk (a well loved and talented Manchester MC and singer) will pen and record lyrics. Or I will send riddims to the other Mc's/vocalists we work with such as Fox, Spyda, etc. I'm always looking for new vocalists to work with, ones with a dancehall style in particular. I think with the vocal element its more like a proper musical piece than ever before.

Highest moments of your career/music journey so far?

There's a few over the years but I predict the best ones are yet to come. The first times I heard my tunes in raves and saw a reaction was defo a landmark. I still get hyped when i catch other people playing my tracks out in a club and see them bring a vibe. John Peel played my music a few times over the year's which was definitely a privilege. The first of two more recent ones, was Dub Phizix played one of my tracks and General Levy was doing a rendition of incredible over a very dark track of mine haha. Sensational. and finally one of the latest little accolades i've enjoyed was having Seani Bee playing our music on the BBC 1xtra dancehall show. I was really hyped on this, as the last four years of music i’ve been heavily looking at dancehall for inspiration and ideas.

Hows the ‘Jamaican Bass’ scene in your city/country and how do you see it pushing forward?

Ok, I will diverge a little to say I like the term Jamaican Bass.  its not too specific so can encompass different BPM’s and styles. Definitely reflects what Think Tonk is. Manchester is a great place for music and clubbing. Theres a lot of great nights. Swing Ting I would definitely name check, Red Eye HiFi have some great events popping off with Jus Now, Serocee, Stylo G. Jack and those guys are putting in good work. the DnB side of things has defo died down a bit manchester.  

Any future projects/events we should know about?

Well Think Tonks being going for about 4 years now and we've talked about an album project in the future. V-Recordings have been great for us and really got the music out there and exposed on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 1xtra, so more releases with them for sure. And in turn we've opened their eyes and ears to a new take on Jungle, Dancehall, Bashment music. I’ve worked on a couple of wicked remixes this summer. Charly Black and a new artist called Cosima, both for Universal Records. watch out for those  

Your all time top 5 tunes?

Shit this is tough! I'll do a top 5 of tunes relevant to Think Tonk and JBM (even that took me a while). Otherwise I'll still be pondering that come doomsday. OK! 5. Alex Reece - Pulp Fiction 4. Jamaican Bass According To.. Cut La Vis

As the summer madness and festival season come to a close, we manage to get a precious moment with the man Cut La Vis. Fresh off the back of his aptly named and upful vibed 'Festival' track voiced by Peppery and provided free via long-time label partner Nice Up Records, Cut La Vis is still riding high as one of the UK's hottest production talents in the reggae arena.

Cut La Vis took a well earned break from building his much anticipated sophomore album to lay down a mix showcasing his interpretation of Jamiacan Bass.. he also provided a few words:

Tell us a bit about your background in music?

I got my first pair of turntables when I was 15 in 1995, and I’ve been playing and making music ever since. In my hometown of Hereford I got heavily in to Hip Hop turntablism and entered DJ battles, scratched with live bands and taught DJ workshops in youth centres for several years. I was also learning about soundsystem music, i.e. reggae, dancehall, dub etc. around that time and started making music that fused these elements with Hip Hop and electronic music. I moved to Brighton in 2010. Since then I’ve been releasing tracks on different labels, and released my first album through NICE UP! Records (the mix features two tracks featuring Lotek and Peppery). I’ve been performing with rapper Mys Diggi round the country and doing solo DJ sets too.

Highest moments of your career/music journey so far?

The set I played at Boomtown in 2013 in The Hidden Woods was amazing, my biggest crowd so far, thousands of people! Mys Diggi and I performed at Shambala the following year and the Chai Wallah’s tent was packed. Touring Greece in 2015 and 2016 was great. Releasing my album was a big ambition, and it was a big deal for me to have acts like Tippa Irie, Eva Lazarus, Mys Diggi and others featuring.

Hows the ‘Jamaican Bass’ scene in your city/country and how do you see it pushing forward?

In The UK there’s a strong tradition of soundsystem music from the carribean mixing with all sorys of other influnces be it Grime,Hip Hop, African music, etc. I’m excited to see how Afro beat can combine with dancehall, dub and ska music. I might try to make it myself!

Any future projects/events we should know about?

I’m working on my next album for NICE UP! At the moment. It’s going to be even more eclectic than my debut One Step Forward, but still with a strong theme of soundsystem music.
