the spotted pardalote, also known as the diamondbird, is a small passerine bird found throughout eastern & southern australia. they are brightly colored and easily recognizable, but often hard to identify in the field due to their quick movements and small size; adult birds are only 8 to 10 centimetres (3.1 to 3.9 in) in length. the spotted pardalote has unique nesting behavior that allows them to create a safe home for their young; they dig an underground tunnel, with an entrance point placed along a riverbank or slope, to nest within. the internal chamber, which is lined with shredded bark, is often higher than the entrance point (presumably to protect the young from flooding). these pardalotes lay one clutch of 3-4 eggs a year. while spotted pardalotes are still relatively common, their numbers are declining, particularly in urban areas; due to their shy natures, they may tend to desert heavily populated zones.

the eurasian bullfinch is a small, round passerine bird in the finch family, found across europe and temperate asia. while many of them are residents in their area, birds in the northernmost portion of their range will migrate south for warmer weather. they primarily feed on seeds and young buds of fruit trees (with their young primarily consuming insects) due to a loss of orchards and woodlands, their numbers have declined in the UK since the 1970s. their fondness for feeding on fruit buds sometimes leads orchards owners to consider them nuisances. they produce two to three broods of offspring per year; outside of the breeding season, they are social but not gregarious, and are typically found in pairs or in small family groups.

Jet, the black Labrador Retriever, from Preston, was the star of a Sunday Mirror double-page feature back in February 1953 after it was discovered that the canine had a plethora of special talents. He was owned by Jimmy Gainer, a professional rat-catcher, who has trained Jet to catch rats and just as a sideline, can pour out beer and fetch change from the till.

Though Jet was mostly employed to help her owner get rid of pesky vermin she was also well versed in the pub trade. Jimmy had taught Jet to pour out bottles of beer in several of the city’s pubs, which the pair usually frequented after a tough day of rat catching.

But that’s not all.

Jet was not merely a one-trick dog, she could also take cash from customers, put the money into the old till and give them their change.
