As the world continues to grapple with the novel coronavirus, the virus continues to mutate. Throughout the pandemic, several genetic variants of SARS-CoV-2 have emerged. The US government SARS-CoV-2 Interagency Group (SIG) has developed a classification scheme to designate four separate classes of variants: Variants Being Monitored, Variants of Interest, Variants of Concern, and Variants of High Consequence. Variants are classified based on their ease of spread, the severity of their symptoms, and how they are treated.

With schools back in session around the United States, schoolboards have grappled with how to combat the spread of the coronavirus while maintaining in-person learning. Making the switch from virtual back to physical sessions has come with its challenges, including identifying how to curb the spread of the virus. Schools around the country have instituted measures which follow CDC guidelines, including enforcing social distancing and wearing face masks. Many schools have introduced mask mandates as a means of safeguarding student and staff health. New Jersey is one of only 16 states which have instituted a mask mandate to date.

Rates of Skin Cancer in New Jersey Higher Than the National Average | James Goydos, M.D. | NewsBreak Original

If you asked the average person where the highest rates of skin cancer were in the United States, the expected response would be in states known for their sunshine. Given we now understand the link between excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) and some forms of skin cancer, the assumption that the incidence of skin cancer is higher in sunny states is an understandable one. However, Florida, “The Sunshine State,” actually has a lower rate of skin cancer compared to others less known for their beach weather.
