I see a young guy, perhaps in his late teens sat out on the steps of a house. His crossed arms and hunched back give a closed off feeling as if he does not want to be approached. The somber expression of his face along with the red in his cheeks makes him appear as if he could have been sad or crying recently as if he had just received bad news. He seems to be lost deep in his own thoughts.
A young girl who appears to be about 20 years of age is found lying across a bed of white flowers. With her fair skin and frozen stature as she stares out into the sky gives her a very snow white appearance. With a slight curve to her lips she appears to be happy, looking into nothing as if lost in a pleasant day dream. The warm sun casts softly across her face, through the shadows of branches and leaves all around. It appears to be a nice day, but maybe a bit brisk under the shadows of the trees because she has chosen to wear a sweatshirt. Her body language and facial expressions leave me with a feeling of peace.
A young girl with fair skin is sat in a field upon luscious, green grass. The shadow of a fence from perhaps a baseball field or local park cascades across her. The shadows contrast against her pale skin, which brings out the bright blue color of her eyes as she gazes deeply into the camera. The soft smile on her face and rosey color of her cheeks shows happiness as she relaxes in the sun with her head lightly leaning on her hand.
For this portrait assignment, I decided to photograph my sister because she is a similar age to I, and capturing natural photos and emotion is easier for me to use a subject that relates more to me than say my mother or father would have. In this particular setting, I posed her looking out the window of what appears to be a dark cabin, with light peeking in from a source to her right, perhaps a hole in this old wooden house. I had her grab the frame of the window as she stuck her head outside to create mystery. It leaves you wonder whether she is really excited by the bright landscape outside the window, or sad and lonely trapped inside, behind the window. I also wanted her hand in that position because of her painted nails adding contrast to the photo, this clean, innocent girl is stuck in a dark, grungy place.
This photograph was taken early in the morning at around 6:00 am, therefore there wasnât a lot of light to work with, but it gave an element of color to the skyline of the photo. The light splits the photo into two sections to capture what I was trying to show. In the top half of the photo, the beautiful morning light captures the trees, bushes, grass, and natural elements. This is contrasted on the lower half of the image with a darker contrast showing the human intrusion into nature with the worn down electrical boxes and gross sewer grate. The lighting is key in creating this man vs. nature feeling because if the background was grey and dreary, it could almost go unnoticed because the electrical boxes and sewer are clearly the main subject, when the photo is in black and white, but the addition of lighting and color changes the story.Â
I think the most emphasized formal element in this photograph would have to be color. It is late into the winter and for months it feels like the world has been colorless with dead trees and grass all around us, grey skies, and no sunlight. However when shooting this photo at around 6:30 in the morning, the golden rays of light brought life to the area that would have seemed dreary and dull without the light hitting it that way at that time of day. It feels like we are finally getting to spring, the first thing you notice is the grass is mostly a lush green with golden highlights and it looks very soft and healthy. The brownish red wall of color that gets blasted with sunlight on the left are dead trees that have been grey and dark all winter, but the golden sunlight seems to give them light, and the sky is just blue enough to outline the power lines and towers to give depth to the endless lines. My favorite part is the bright red sign on the structure that I feel the picture needs to tie together. The next most emphasized formal element is space. The reason I took the photograph to begin with was to capture the seemingly infinite row of power lines that stretched across a massive field that was extremely wide and went farther than my eyes could see into the distance, and it gives you a feeling of how big the world really is.
The lower quarter of the photo has a lush, green field of grass, that is stopped in a diagonal line from left, upwards to the right. Along that line we see a line of tall grass and weeds that border a stone brick shed, which looks strong and intact, but the rotten wood door with the metal lock on the front makes it seem like the shed has not been opened for many years. Two trees stand in the line of tall grass on either side of the shed. The tree on the left is off the frame, except for a large branch that hangs above the shed, and the other stands tall on the far side of the shed. There is a hill that slopes downward behind the shed and trees, so the background is filled with tall evergreen trees on the right, and powerlines far away to the left of the shed, along a light blue, cloud filled skyline.
I was on my way to a field with a distant view of a vast landscape from above, and this photo was taken from the parking lot of a church, where I was parking to walk to where I planned to take photos from. I noticed that the early morning sun was falling nicely on the landscape in front of me, accentuating the orange color of the basketball hoops painted lines, and it contrasted well with the light blue sky. Since the light was very golden in the early morning it also brought a lush green color to the grass which I hadnât seen in a long time because the winter makes the grass look brown and dead, but the frost melting in the sunlight made the image seem like it could be late spring or summer.
In this project, we were to take an ordinary everyday object, and make photograph it in different elements. In the first picture, I showed the cup on a street symbolizing the morning and how we all get up and drink coffee on our way to work or school. The second image symbolizes a similar feeling of the waking up in the morning and having your coffee on your porch and the color starts to fill the world as you wake up. In the first image, I blurred the background with a large aperture to let in more light and lose the detail to focus on the mug, whereas in the second image I used a small aperture to capture as much detail on the bush as possible to show the contrast between the colorful textured plant against the flat, white mug.
In this photo for my Photo 1100 class I had to take a picture of a sewer. To make the photo more interesting, I took advantage of the words âDump No Waste!â on the sewer and placed a red solo cup (waste) above the sewer. The bright red color also adds a lot of color to the bland earth tones of the background.
This is one of my sewer photos for my Photo 1100 class. To make the photo more interesting, I threw a soccer ball into the air and let it bounce and then captured it mid bounce in front of the sewer as if there was a game of street soccer happening near the sewer.
