⋆.࿔:𐙚 Olivia Rodrigo finally revealed the OR3 tracklist so here are my thoughts and theories about each song! ⋆.࿔:𐙚
At this point we already get the concept of the album. It seems to tell the story of a relationship from beginning to the end (unfortunately). You can literally split it into two parts: “girl so in love” and “you seem pretty sad.” And considering that “the cure” and “begged” are only tracks 8 and 9… I genuinely need to prepare emotionally because I’m actually terrified of her guitar and might literally drop dead because what could possibly hurt more than those two songs?
We already know about this one, it feels like complete happiness of something new. Probably the happiest song on the album…
I feel like this song might be very ironic. Like Olivia joking about the fact that now she’s also writing a silly cliché love song like everyone else. I imagine it having a similar vibe to “love is embarrassing” like she’s making fun of herself for being hopelessly in love but not caring anymore.
I refuse to believe Olivia wrote more than two fully romantic songs lol so… Ig this is still a very romantic song, but with a subtle deceptively cute undertone. Not just the honeymoon phase but also the moment when everything is so sweet and addictive it almost becomes dangerous.
⋆.ೃ࿔4. maggots for brains
And this one probably represents full obsession already and how love literally makes you stupid. I think this song could have some rock influences because the title reminds me sm of the whole GUTS album vibe.
This title feels very childish and teenage (in the best way possible). Like the feeling of being truly seen and loved by someone. But I can also imagine it being about idealizing love and trying to turn relationships into some kind of simple formula… even though we all know nothing about love is ever actually simple.
This feels like the emotional turning point of the album. And it’s literally right in the middle too. Maybe it’s about the first serious conflicts in the relationship - the kind that suddenly sober you up and make you want control back. Or maybe it’s about growing up in general - the beginning of leaving behind your teenage self. (And the next track makes me think like that even more).
Oh my god… I already feel like this could destroy me and become one of my favs(yes I’m a masochist). And the title is SO symbolic because we all know both of Olivia’s previous eras were heavily associated with that color and basically it was HER color. From Olivia’s interviews and newer songs, you can already tell she’s slowly leaving that version of herself behind and growing into someone new. So I think this song could either be about nostalgia for her younger self or finally accepting that you can’t stay in the past and stay the same person forever.
⋆.ೃ࿔8. the cure & 9. begged
Okay we already know these songs break hearts every single time people hear them, thanks. The only thing I’m really curious about is what the studio version of “begged” will sounds like. Will it stay similar to the SNL performance or will they add more to the instrumental? Cause I felt like something was slightly missing in the live version but maybe that emptiness is part of the emotional effect.
⋆.ೃ࿔10. what's wrong with me
Wow… this title alone already sounds painful. What’s interesting to me is that Olivia’s older relationship songs were usually focused on what the other person did wrong. But this time it sounds mostly more mature but also devastating, because now she’s questioning herself instead. I can also definitely imagine this song connecting to themes from “jealousy, jealousy” and “pretty isn’t pretty.”
The title is so minimalistic and I think the production might feel like that too, maybe something softer like “lacy”. I think this song is about making yourself smaller in relationships or after a breakup. Like wondering: “Would he has loved me more if I was less emotional, less loud, less difficult…?”
And this, I think, is the final emotional confrontation of the album. Maybe it’s not only about expectations in relationships, but also expectations from fame, from fans and from herself. And I feel like this is probably where Olivia reaches the main conclusion that relationships can’t magically make you perfect or truly heal you and the hardest things still have to be worked through within yourself.
Even the title itself feels cinematic. I imagine this song as some kind of metaphor for disappearance - the end of a relationship, the fading of a person or even saying goodbye to an old version of yourself. Like smoke fading into the air.
So yeah those are all my thoughts for now. Before the titles were revealed my random fav song prediction was actually track 4 so we’ll see if I was right hehe. Based on purely the titles and my theories, I think “purple”, “what’s wrong with me” or “less” could end up becoming my fav song on the album.
As for expectations I still really hope we hear some punk-rock influences or at least heavier instrumentals again cause I’m a big fan of it. But more than anything, I’m excited to see how Olivia’s lyricism evolve and understand how much she’s grown emotionally in this new era!
