Lee, trying to achieve a greeting at once friendly and casual, gets up from his stool and bows in a sort of mock-dignified old-world greeting. He attempts to smile warmly, showing an appropriate amount of interest, but what emerges instead is a leer of naked lust: it is horrible, ghastly. Allerton recoils and looks at Lee as if something were seriously wrong with him. Lee is instantly mortified.
