Brooklyn felt bad for him. Not in a patronizing way, she just understood how much harder he had to work as a newly single father. Sadie never helped the situation. She was always gone, or drunk, or both, at least as she could tell. “I’m sorry you have to go through this, Mr. Weston,” she tried to console, but knew words didn’t exactly help the situation. She watched him turn to leave, and went back to her cooking, “Will do!” She turned off the heat and took the pan off of the stove. She grabbed a fork from the drawer and took the lid off the pan, taking a taste test of the ‘paella’. It was pretty good, and should’ve been good for the kids.
“Time to pick up what you’re working on, guys, dinner’s done,” she said, dishing small portions into bowls for the kids before going to the fridge with two glasses and filling them up with ice and water from the dispenser. Brooklyn never really ate with them, she felt it unprofessional. Instead she would go home after this and cook again, this time for herself and her boyfriend. It was taxing, but it felt more professional to take the time to clean and put away leftovers.
She set the bowls in front of the kids, smiling at the unicorn sheet. “That looks great, Bethy,” she complimented the hot pink horse, which now had rainbows scribbled, coming out of its eyes. “It has rainbow laser beams in its eyes!” The 6-year-old smiled, proud of her work. This brought a laugh from Brook as she took the sheet and walked it over to the fridge. “It’s perfect, B, let me hang it on the fridge, okay?” She secured the paper under a magnet, right in the center of the refrigerator. She brought the kids back forks and their water, setting those on the table as well. “It’s hot, but not spicy. And chicken is a safe food, so you guys should like this. At least try a couple of bites.”
She made her way back to the kitchen, making a bowl for James and putting foil over it, before securing the rest in a Tupperware container. She had put the dishes in the dishwasher, wiped down the counters, and put the leftovers away when she noticed James come back down looking a lot more comfortable. “I’ll always make enough for you, too, Mr. Weston,” she brought him the bowl, taking the foil off and rolling it into a ball in her hand. “Do you need help putting them to bed tonight? Or do you need any extra cleaning done?” She was trying to find a way to extend her stay. If Brooklyn was honest, she hadn’t wanted to go home to Rhys lately, since he was probably going to come home smelling like someone else’s perfume. “You don’t even have to pay me for the time, I’m totally willing to help off the clock.”
“You’re a lifesaver, Brooklyn,” James sighed in relief. She truly was. The best thing he had done in months was hire her because she had gone above and beyond her duties. He liked to throw in extra pay for the additional minutes she stayed or how she always seemed to distract the kids from James and Sadie’s shouting matches. He hated that he was triggered so easily by his wife but she brought out the worst in him. He could see that the rest of the plates were picked clean so he was taking that as a sign that it was delicious. Grabbing a fork and digging in, James looked up at Brooklyn’s question. He swallowed - he was right, it was scrumptious - and then shook his head. “One, I’d never take advantage of you like that and two, I’ve got things covered. Beth usually wrangles an extra story out of me but...” He grinned and looked over at his daughter that was now glued to her tablet. YouTube Kids. Boy, times had changed.
He watched her as she moved around the kitchen and saw in her slowed movements that she seemed in no rush to leave. He chewed the inside of his cheek as he ate and thought; it wasn’t exactly professional but...”If you’d like though, you can stay in the guest room. If you’re not looking to go home, that is. I’m sure the kids would love the idea of a sleepover with you.” And in all honesty, James wouldn’t mind some additional company either. It did get very lonely at night - not that he was going to make Brooklyn spend time with him.
