Did you know there are 20,000 bodies buried in Washington Square Park alone? Originally, it was for burying the unknown when they passed but eventually it become the burial site for those who were unfortunate enough to be plagued with the yellow fever and died because of it. It’s also legend that the large elm tree, Hangman’s Elm, in the northwest corner of the park was the old hanging tree. Fascinating how much of New York is still unknown to us.
