BIOGRAPHY:
Jamie, Jamie, Jamie.
He can still remember the first time someone called him a freak. He was seven years old, laying in the wood chips at Cherry Elementary; he could feel the sharp edges of the ground digging into his arms, and pulling at his curls.
It was a day like any other, except for the fact that Jamie Cromwell had been allowed to walk to the park by himself. His mother was too tired to go with him, and his father was Dead with a capital D - a south side tradition! - his grandma, Nanny Cromwell, had a meeting with her little club that she called, ‘the Witches…’ (Though, Jamie didn’t really think they were magic or anything.) And it really wasn’t that far from the trailer! He should’ve been fine - at least that was what his mother repeated to Nanny all that night, at least.
He laughed as the wind tickled at his nose, and as the sun warmed his face - he stared, with childlike wonder, thinking of how beautiful the taste of freedom felt for the first time in his young life!
Then it all came crashing down, when the boot of his childhood bully, [NAME REDACTED], crunched the bones in his nose to a few different pieces, his voice echoing “WATCH WHERE YOU'RE LAYING, FREAK!”
Jamie realized then that the world wasn’t really as beautiful as it seemed. The hours spent in the ER that night broke something in him, even as his Nanny Cromwell held onto his hand and promised him everything would be okay. No, Jamie knew better - this world wasn’t made for him. He would always be the bottom of the food chain, and he should always be ready for the next boot to come crashing the fuck down.
Now, growing up a pessimist? It had its up and downs. He was never really disappointed when his Mom’s promises fell through, or when her outbursts left him emotionally raw; wounded like a metaphorical stake to the chest. It was just life. Jamie never found himself hurting when friends ended up being enemies, or losers, or… grew up, and grew apart. Insecurities sort of ran his life, though - and not even in the fun, quirky way? More like the weird, compulsive way.
Jamie would do anything he could to push people away before they pushed him first. He feared the common knowledge that he was Other by circumstance of birth, and instead made himself Other by choice. He was too loud, and abrasive in the most dramatic way possible; he wore his hair long, and cranked his heavy metal bullshit loud enough for the world to hear. To the naked eye, Jamie was everything they should want to stay away from, and he liked it that way - it was survival.
Nanny Cromwell is one of the very few who know that Jamie is anything but the facade he puts on, though. He’s sweet, underneath it all; fascinated by small wonders when given the chance to let his mind run away with itself, and gentle with those who are small, or innocent, or fuzzy, or not-human. It’s only with the rare that Jamie shows that side to himself; only with the people he learns to trust… and those who fight back when he tries his hardest to run away.
Jamie’s mother lives in the trailer park on the cusp of the south side and the Proper, but growing up, Jamie always spent more time at his Nanny’s house than anywhere else. It was there that he learned of old town legends, and pored over the wildly weird history of Cherry Township. There, that the oral history of the Cherry Witches was passed down unto him. It was his birthright as Nanny Cromwell’s surviving heir - his place to join the Witches, or whatever, when Nanny got too old to keep running their meetings.
And it would have been really cool if the magic were actually real, but as far as Jamie knew, their candles, and their tarot cards; their meetings over fundraisers and knitting hats for the newborns at the hospital…? It was all a bunch of Old Lady Stuff - and he didn’t exactly think joining a club full of his Nanny’s friends exactly screamed cool and functioning young adult.
It’s at Nanny’s insistence that Jamie is enrolled at CCU, but he tries to make the best of things - even if it’s a pain in the ass, always trying to fly by on the outskirts of campus. His one saving grace is the Dungeons and Dragons club that meets after class every once in a while: his only chosen people in all of Cherry Township.
He’s a lonely guy that stays lonely, and now that summer is in full swing, Jamie is just hoping to get through tourist season with enough cash for his own place. He’s currently living in his van - and sleeping on Nanny’s couch when he falls asleep after dinner - but he doesn’t mind the van life, so much. He goes where he wants - he smokes whenever he wants to. Life is good… or as good as it can be when you’re Jamie Cromwell.
THE SECRET:
JAMIE HAS BEEN BREAKING INTO HOUSES WHEN HE NEEDS TO GET HIMSELF THROUGH THE NIGHT. HE KNOWS THAT NANNY CROMWELL WOULD HELP HIM OUT IF HE JUST ASKED - HE KNOWS THAT HE COULD PROBABLY CATCH HIS OWN MOTHER IN THE TRAILER ON A GOOD DAY AND ASK HER FOR SOME FOOD AND A SHOWER - BUT SINCE LEAVING HIS MOTHER’S PLACE, HE’S BECOME FIERCELY INDEPENDENT… AND OUTRAGEOUSLY STUPID. HIS NANNY DOESN’T KNOW HE’S LIVING IN HIS VAN, AND SHE’D BE DISAPPOINTED TO KNOW THAT HE’S BEEN BREAKING INTO CHERRY RESIDENTS HOUSES TO BATHE, AND EAT, AND REST HIS HEAD WHEN TIMES GET TOUGH. HE’D NEVER STEAL ANYTHING BUT SNACKS - HE’S BETTER THAN THAT… BUT HE’S GETTING MORE AND MORE DESPERATE FOR HIS OWN PLACE BY THE DAY. HE DOESN’T KNOW HOW MUCH LONGER HE HAS IT IN HIMSELF TO RESIST TEMPTATION.
