I think a common misconception (among both believers and non-believers) about the soul as described in the Bible is that it's this completely ethereal, non-corporeal thing that is distinct from the body and that the body is nothing more than a vessel or a prison for the soul.

When in reality the Biblical teaching is more like body + spirit = soul? That's a bit of an oversimplification, but it's notable how at times the Hebrew word for soul, "nephesh," is also used to describe human bodies (including dead bodies).

The idea that the body is nothing more than a prison and "not part of the real you" is actually foreign to Scripture. It may even be tied to gnostic views about matter being intrinsically evil, and that matter was actually created by a lesser evil god. These are views that have (unsurprisingly) historically been thought to be heretical by most Christians.

The New Testament teaches that the divorce between the body and spirit upon death is a tragedy that results from the Fall, and not something God had planned for humanity. Thus it also teaches that in the world to come, when this world comes to an end and the heavens and earth are made new, the bodies and spirits of the deceased will be reunited again.
