something very funny about Emma is how Miss Bates (the dull chatterbox who bores everyone to tears) and Mr Woodhouse (the silly hypochondriac) are both Cassandra type characters. Miss Bates gives you so many hints of what’s going on between Frank Churchill and Jane Fairfax in her many monologues, but no one bothers listening to her. Mr Woodhouse tells you that Frank Churchill is “not quite the thing” but it’s disguised as another one of his nonsensical fears about health. and that’s why jane austen is unparalleled.
