THERE WERE SOME things you just couldn’t do in this world without a closet female friend, Yusuke thought. And since there was no way in Hell he was gonna get caught shopping at such a cutesy establishment in the middle of broad daylight, he found himself once again missing Keiko… albeit, for far more shallow reasons.
Though she’d often scold him with that hand on her hip and a pointed finger, ‘Yusuke! It’s really not that big of a deal! Honestly.’ – no matter how many times she’d chided him, it didn’t make the whole ordeal any less embarrassing. And even now he couldn’t manage to force his hand into doing it himself… well, that’s what he had friends for, right? Luckily. Since there was no way he could ask Kuwabara for this sort of favor ( unless he wanted to hear that squeal of a laugh, no thank you ) that left the next closest person. A certain red-head who was sure to keep the whole thing on the down-low, y’know. In any case, he knew Kurama was good at keeping a secret. That’s all that mattered, right?
“… – you’re not gonna laugh, right? Just… help a guy out.” A hand ran across the back of his neck somewhat nervously as he jabbed a small slip of paper that’d been folded too many times in Kurama’s direction, sloppy katakana scribbled across fine lines as to indicate what flavor and how many scoops. Yusuke’s eyes flitted briefly over to the ice cream stand a few feet away from them – the one he was so hesitant to approach.
✾ —– EVEN WITH THE tone of seriousness riddled with suppressed embarrassment greeting him, Kurama still hadn’t so much as raised a brow in curiosity-- let alone laugh. Instead, he pondered upon what might have caused Yusuke to become so haphazardly nervous that he’d ask for help. They had only been sauntering along casually up to this point, so perhaps his friend’s attention was drawn to something that Kurama otherwise wouldn’t think twice about. Observing and listening closely to the request, an affirmative nod was given as if to assure that he could be tasked not to prod and gibe at whatever this request may be. Promptly, a thin and sloppily-folded note was taken into his hand. After unraveling it and scanning over its entails for what was possibly the fourth time, he traced Yusuke’s line of sight to the ice cream stand. It all started to make sense.
Now enlightened as to what it was the detective was after did Kurama approach the stand without a breath in interrogation or protest. He waited in line and adhered to the recipe for his companion’s ideal dessert down to the last detail before returning, relinquishing it quietly. Then, he continued walking as if it weren’t a big deal, but even the youkai quell his inquisitiveness. So, without highlighting the previous plight with his words, Kurama inquired,
“Have you never gotten ice cream on your own before, Yusuke?”
