seeing dex in the bullseye suit for the first time...
pairing: dex x f!reader
warnings: non descriptive mentions of fingering, making out, they match each other's freak SO BAD!!!!
a/n: here's the winner of the poll I did recently my lovelies!
dex was coming home late again.
you knew he was busy, especially with what he was doing saving New York from the Fisks and the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. you knew what he did in the dark of the night, you knew everything. but you accepted him.
there was no changing him.
when you first found out about it all, it was because you had found the mask hidden in the wardrobe the two of you shared. his suit tucked away behind several different jumpers, jeans, quarter zips of his that you thought needed washing. when you approached dex about it, he was surprised. there wasn't any anger or fear in your voice.
you spoke to him the same way you always did. the only thing that you showed that was different was worry. your main concern was that dex was okay and was taking care of himself rather than anything else. you held his hands in yours and made him promise that he would come home to you every night.
he always did.
nothing could keep him from you. dex would've slaughtered New York if it stood in the way of him returning home to you and your quiet snoring. you were his and he was yours.
when he pulled himself onto the fire escape, he smiled. you always left the window slightly open for him to come home easier this way. otherwise he had to get changed in the alleyway next to your apartment building and that was something you hated. you had gotten possessive over him, asking what if someone saw him change whilst dex was more worried about someone following him into the alley.
his eyes landed on you stood in the doorway with a glass of water for him, wearing his shirt and a pair of tiny bedtime shorts underneath it. he couldn't help but smile underneath the mask.
how had he gotten so lucky that he could commit such foul atrocities then come home to you?
you froze when he let himself in through the window. you had seen the suit before, but you'd never seen him wearing it. you'd never seen it on. your breath hitched on your throat. he towered over you and your apartment, making everything seem so small and belittled. his biceps looked huge - moreso than normal - and his thighs looked so much thicker. your mouth hung open as dex scanned you for any sense of worry. you felt your hands grow clammy and sweaty as your eyes met his. all you could see was his hypnotising eyes that made you bite your lip.
without thinking, you placed the glass of water on the bedside cabinet and jumped into dex's arms. you wrapped your legs around his waist and instantly kissed him - forgetting all about the mask - and tugged onto the fabric of his suit. dex couldn't help but chuckle at your eagerness, he didn't expect this reaction from you for the first time you had seen him in the bullseye suit. the material was soft on your lips and tongue as you moaned into his mouth.
"slow down, sweetheart." he laughed and pulled away from you, causing you to whimper. "what's got you so hot and bothered-" dex raised his hand to pull the mask from his head and you could've sworn you'd gone to heaven just then. his greying hair a mess from the mask, his cheekbone scar glistening in blood. "what's got into-"
you couldn't help but surge back to kiss him.
how had dex gotten so lucky that you would kiss him in a suit covered in blood?
you, his North Star, indulged in his secret activities throughout the night. it kept him balanced. it kept him sane. were you worried for the bartender who would hand you your change after buying drinks and their hands would linger a second longer? you always were. but dex needed you.
and god forbid anyone who thought they could tear him from his North Star.
he tightened his grip on your hips and laid you down on the bed, hovering over you as he continued the embrace. "first time seein' me in the suit got you all worked up, huh?" you mumbled something he couldn't understand and all he could do was laugh. "want me to make you feel good, huh?"
dex pulled away from you (causing you to whimper at the loss of contact) and noticed blood smeared on his clothes that you were wearing. his eyes widened as his hands instantly pulled your clothes up to scan you for any injuries. he had faced nightmares just like this. that you would be pulled from him in a moment of intimacy as the universe's punishment for all of his crimes committed.
"you're hurt, where?" his hands tore his shirt from you whilst he panicked and searched for any potential harm you were facing.
"dex, it's all the blood from your suit, honey." you giggled as he placed a hand on his suit and pulled it away, examining the blood on his fingertips and he sighed in relief. "or maybe I've been committing crimes and you've finally caught me, bullseye." you smirked and dex shook his head.
he couldn't help but laugh.
how did you match him so well?
when dex pulled your shorts from you and curved his fingers between your legs, he wrapped a hand around your hair to ensure you kept eye contact with him. making sure that you were always looking at him. the ever consuming gaze of the masked vigilante before you made you ridiculously turned on - you knew he knew that from the glisten on his hands when he pulled away from you.
Silly reader needs some help fixing something and she doesn't want to wait hours to call for some pro (she just wants an excuse to call dex) so she goes and asks him for help and stalls and makes him stay and he sorta realises but he brushes it off

summary: you just needed your neighbour to help fix the AC unit, instead you end up with him doing your chores unprompted.

"Can you please help me? The maintenance man is on holiday,"
You're standing in front of Dex's door, vibrating with anxiety, you're practically about to start crying because you're so nervous and you'd HATE to sleep another night with a broken AC unit.
Your neighbour, Tony, is standing there watching you with a little frown, then as soon as what you said registered in his head he smiles, easy as ever, "Sure, what's up?"
Shoulders sagging and a relieved sigh leaves your mouth, "Oh my gosh, thank you!" You wipe at your eyes, at the unshed tears, "My AC is broken and it's so hot and I'm on my periods and I can't regulate my body temperature like normal,"
Dex hums, and reaches behind the door to grab his keys, he steps out, in his slippers, t-shirt and sweats, and closes it behind himself.
"It's also making such a horrible noise! Don't know if you can hear it from here but it goes; RRATATAA MMRATATATA MMRRATATAâ" You follow him to your flat and he steps inside - the door was left open - you follow him, nose almost hitting his broad back when he suddenly stops in his tracks. "Whatâ"
Your neighbour looks tense for a second and he slowly turns around and makes eye contact with you, "Can I⊠come in?"
You're confused, because he's already inside but then he has an odd look in his eyes. Like he's nervous, maybe scared. You stand there, thinking, and the longer your silence drags on the more anxious he's getting. A vein pops out along his neck and he swallows, Adam's Apple bobbing.
"Of course," You smile, big and toothy for good measure.
That does the trick. Dex immediately relaxes and makes it straight to your AC unit. The layout of both of your places are practically identical. The only difference being Dex's minimalism and your maximalism in comparison. While he's got barren white walls, yours are plastered with posters and cut up magazine pages. A mess of prints, sticker sheets and postcards.
"So, can you fix it?" You hover over Dex as he's on one knee on the floor.
"Yeah,"
"Do you need me to help?" You ask.
Dex looks up, his eyes dragging from your toes to your head. You have on a bright orange t-shirt. It was oversized and it looked like you cropped it with scissors by yourself. Then for bottoms you had a plaid skirt that stopped at your knees and socks. Everything else was a mixture of different accessories, of varying colours, metals, rocks and beads, adorning your neck, wrists, ears and fingers. You looked too adorable to get on your knees and get dirty. It wouldn't be right. Plus, you did say you were on your periods, and that, to Dex, means pain and discomfort.
"No, thank you," Dex smiles a little, and you nod, "Okay, I'll make you something to drink,"
You turn on your heel, your skirt spinning with you and Dex makes eye contact with the tiger printed at the back of your t-shirt.
The whole thing takes half an hour to fix, and that is, without proper tools too. Dex Tony is smart as shit and fantastic with his hands, turns out.
While Dex was fixing your AC, you fussed over him, offering a pillow for his knees while he works. You prepare water, a tall glass of orange juice with ice cubes, a straw in it and an orange peel on the rim for good measure. Because you're a good host and he's doing this for you, for free. Then you make him a plate of biscuits too. You sit on the sofa by the side, basically on standby in case he wants a drink or snack because you can't leave the food anywhere near him, the inside of the AC was filthy and it's starting to stick to Dex's clothes and hands.
You're not even looking at what he's doing inside the thing, you're just watching him.
You could turn the TV on, have some noise in the background, but then you'd feel rude, especially since he's getting all dirty fixing your AC for free. It wouldn't be right, you'd look like an ungrateful person.
So you're both there, sitting in silence. Dex looks at you and you get up before he even opens his mouth.
You lower yourself to be eye level with him and stick the cold glass of orange juice in front of him and the plate of biscuits.
"Thanks," Dex smiles, and wraps your hand over the glass, and brings it to his mouth so he can take a long sip through the straw. His eyes flutter shut for a second, clearly enjoying the beverage. Then he slowly releases your hand and his eyes land on the biscuits, "What're those? The heart ones,"
"Jammie Dodgers, I made them myself! And the juice too! Squeezed it yesterday!"
Dex is smiling, "Really?"
"Yeah!"
Dex looks around for something to wipe his hands with and you realise you didn't even give him a rag to clean with. You don't want him getting up so you just grab it yourself, "My hands are clean, I promise,"
"I believe you," Dex chuckles and opens his mouth so you can feed it to him. The biscuits are small enough that Dex eats it all at once, he's chewing, and hums, "Good?" You grin.
He nods and you squeal, "I'm such a good baker!"
.

Once your AC is fixed, you're so relieved you basically collapse on your sofa, energy zapped out of you. You were still on your periods after all and you're slouched against a bunch of pillows, the plate of biscuits sitting on your belly.
Dex makes his way to the kitchen for cleaning supplies unprompted and starts cleaning and wiping the mess he made around the AC. You don't even say anything, you watch him do his thing as you eat the leftover biscuits on the plate, eyes following his every move. And he looks extremely focused, cleaning everything properly and putting everything away like it should be.
Then when you think he's done, he fetches your vacuum and starts it up. He's vacuuming your living room, your neighbour, your mysterious tall and strong and big neighbour.
You're sort of in a trance when Dex grabs the empty plate from your hands and takes it to the kitchen, putting it in the sink, and comes back to vacuum under your coffee table and then he bends, right in front of you, and grabs your sofa with one hand and lifts it, with you sitting on it.
A squeal tumbles out of your mouth in shock as Dex vacuums, one handed under your sofa, a focused frown on his face. You open and close your mouth like a fish, trying to say something. But you can't.
It doesn't even take another minute before your sofa is slowly lowered back on the floor. Dex moves to the other end of the living room, completely oblivious as you stare at him with wide eyes.
He's all done sooner rather than later when he puts your vacuum back in the kitchen where he found it, and then he's standing in front of your sink, hands on his hips.
You practically leap out of the sofa, almost tripping over your own feet to get to him before he starts washing your dishes.
"Wait! Thank you!â" You scramble to his side, and he looks over his shoulder at you, "Hm?"
"Thank you so much for your help! I appreciate it so much, and you basically saved my life! I owe you, seriously," You smile, linking your hands in front of you when he turns to fully face you.
"Oh, it's alright," He smiles, shrugging.
"Uhm, yeah," You don't know what else to say.
"Can I have a look at your sink? There's something wrong with it," You glance at the sink behind him, and you know he's right, because earlier when you twisted the handle to wash your hands, the water did come out stronger than usual, like much stronger.
"Uh, I don't know, you already fixed my ACâŠ" You say, tucking your chin in. You feel like such a pest.
"I don't mind, really," Dex smiles easily, and you eventually nod, "Okay,"
He turns around to have a look at the sink and you step back to give him space to work, and you really should've kicked him out with another round of thanks and a promise of dinner or baked goods, but instead he grabs the handle and your kind, helpful neighbour is all but drenched in water.
He gets sprayed right on the face and when he reaches to twist it close, it sprays on his chest.
You're screaming because water has reached the ceiling and he's trying to stop the water with his hands. "Oh my God! What do I do?! What do I do?!" You panic.
Dex grabs a towel from the side and covers the faucet with it, "Stay back!"
"Okay," You nod, taking a couple of steps back with your hands over your mouth.
.
.
.
Fixing up the sink and cleaning the kitchen takes about two hours of team effort, or mostly Tony effort, because turns out he's the kind that doesn't really like it when someone else is in the kitchen with him at the same time, so you're mostly on the side watching him work, and fetching him whatever he needs.
He even makes you go change shoes in case water leaks, so when you come back with bright yellow wellies, he laughs and asks if you've got a torch.
You're squatting next to Dex as he works under your sink, and he makes you hold the light steady for him.
"Good?" You randomly ask to check if you're doing a good job.
"Yeah, it's good, we're almost done," He hums.
"Okay," You squeak, because you're so close to him you can feel his body heat, especially since he took his wet t-shirt off. He was shirtless, and he looks much more bigger now for some reason.
You try to stay respectful and not stare too much, but he's so strong. You can't keep your eyes away from the blonde hairs on his arms and chest, the small, tiny freckles, and especially the scars. Like, he has so many. You remember him telling you a while back that he works in security, so maybe that's how he got them? But then, he's got a lot of them, his job must be super dangerous, you only hope he gets paid handsomely. But you dread to think that might not be the reality, because he lives in this dump of an apartment building with you.
So maybe he's a spy. Or a contract killer. Or a super-hero!
Whatever and whoever he is doesn't really matter. He's your neighbour and he's kind.
Then you see the big scar down his back, from his neck to his tailbone and you feel bad for him. Sadness settles heavily in your belly, he must've almost died to get a scar that big. Physical therapy must've been hell.
You're pulled out of your thoughts and you're standing in front of Dex and he's looking at you with a clenched jaw. His eyes are laser focused on yours, as if he's trying to pull something out of you. He's still shirtless and the floor is still wet by that point.
You blink up at him, "What happened to your back?"
Dex's hands clench into fists by his sides, and he attempts a simple smile but fails, "Work Injury,"
"Did you get compensation?" You ask.
"No, but I will, soon," He answers and it makes sense in your head. These things take a long time to get sorted, with lawyers and stuff. So he's saving money by living in a place like this until he gets his settlement.
"Does it hurt?" Now you should probably shut up.
"Sometimes,"
"I'm sorry, that must be hard," You apologise and you're confused, and a little surprised to see a big, honest smile appear on his face, "Thank you,"
Your heart leaps in your chest, as if you've said something without knowing what it means. Like, you're somehow not in the loop anymore, "Do youâ" You clear your throat, "Nevermind, I'll just get you a new t-shirt,"
Dex watches you disappear off to your bedroom, then come back with a folded t-shirt and a towel. He grabs the towel first, wiping his neck, shoulders, belly, anywhere water touched him really, because he's sort of semi-dry.
Dex grabs the black t-shirt handed to him without thinking and he shakes it loose, frowning at the size of it, "Who's t-shirt is this?"
"Mine??"
"This t-shirtâŠis three times your size," Dex says and the sudden coldness in his voice makes you nervous.
Dex glances down at the item in his hand, it's black, a colour he's never seen you wear, and it was clearly a men's t-shirt by the cut and of course, the size of it, it'd fit him, but it won't fit you.
"Uh, it's mine, I promise, I didn't steal it from anyone or anything!" You spill out clumsily. It was the truth but you're not sure you had to tell him you didn't steal it. "I buy them big like this to sleep in them comfortably!"
Dex flips the offending piece of clothing over and there's text on the back, white and bold, 'MY TUMMY HURTS'
"Oh," Dex says, shoulders sagging and smiling.
At his reaction, you smile too, anxiety leaving you all together, "It's mine, swear it,"
"I know," He chuckles, slipping it on, and when he smooths it over his chest, he tucks his chin in, smelling the collar, "Smells nice,"
"Yeah, it's just been washed,"
"We should have dinner together, you said you owed me," Dex smiles, leaning against the counter, completely relaxed like he wasn't seriously, for a split second, contemplating killing himself after he leaves to his apartment at the idea of you giving him some other man's clothes to wear after he's been looking out for you and taking care of you.
"Yeah, sure, what do you want?" You open your fridge, looking inside.
"Sandwiches and chips," He answers.
You're surprised, you'd imagine he'd want a more elaborate dinner considering the labour he's been doing for you for half of the day, "Okay, like TV dinner or dinner dinner?"
"TV dinner, at my place this time," He chuckles and you laugh, "Yeah, okay,"
"Wouldn't wanna give my TV ideas about breaking down too,"
"Yeah, or I'll have to stay here forever, fixing stuff for sandwiches and Jammie Dodgers," Dex jokes easily, and you ignore the uneasy feeling in your stomach at his words.
"Oh, there's still orange juice left, could have it with the sandwiches!" You exclaim.
"Yeah, why not,"
"Oooh, I can make dip to go with the chips!"
"Sounds like a date," He smiles.
"Oh, haha, yeah," You giggle, albeit a little nervously. If your neighbour Tony was anyone else, you'd be 100% nervous and maybe scared, but he's never done anything to hurt you. He's been more than friendly and extremely helpful. The least you could do is make him whatever he wants for dinner.
idk everyone imagines Joel as kinda dom daddy but I think heâs actually very gentle, he hints at it with the gun scene in S1 and throughout the show and game heâs very careful and gentle with things he loves ( the guitar, tess, ellie ) so i think that translates to sex too, heâs ultimately a protector anyways yaaas need dat
a little nsfw | wc: 557
something about a big burly man being incredibly gentle with you, it's sickening (in a good way).
rough, work-worn hands that hold you like you're something fragile. guitar calloused fingertips that drag over your skin impossibly soft, tracing your body. the length of your arm, the dip of your waist revealed where your shirt had ridden up during the night. his arm wraps around you from behind, pulling you closer to him. you're convinced that heâd meld your bodies together if he could but alas he can't so he compensates by never taking his hands off you. you're not complaining.
his hand slips under the faded flannel you wear to sleep, courtesy of him of course, cupping your boob and kneading the flesh in his hand. you hum into your pillow as his thumb skims over your nipple, sleep still clinging to the corners of your eyes, limbs still in need of stretching. you can't move with the mass of him attached to you, grounding you in place, and quite frankly you don't want to.Â
joel can get very touchy in the morning. not that he isnât throughout the day, you're never without a possessive, protective hand at the small of your back when you take walks around town. but something about the just risen sun and the warm blankets has you looking extra holdable. who could blame him?
he buries his nose into the crook of your neck, his breath coming in warm puffs. the coarse greying hair of his beard scratches against your skin, you relish in the sensation. what's even more is the soft plush of his lips that press against your shoulder, gently kissing you awake.Â
âmorninâ sweetheart,â he says, a low, raspy tone only reserved for you in the early hours.
you donât say anything in response, simply reaching behind you to hold the nape of his neck, fingers slipping into his hair and scratching the scalp there. he hums, still low and riddled by sleep, pleased. the sound sends a shiver down your spine, the line of vertebrae fitted perfectly to his chest.Â
he continues to idly touch you, absentminded passes of his hand over the expanse of your stomach, while your fingers stay threaded in the strands of his thick hair. it's been longer in recent months but you have no qualms, you like the way it falls into his face and gives you the opportunity to push it backâas well as the way he blushes furiously when you do so.Â
you turn your head to the best of your abilities to look at him. morning light makes his eyes glitter, you try to ignore the unfiltered adoration in them, in fear of rolling over and never being able to look at him again. youâve never been with anyone who loves as strongly as joel does, and makes it evident in everything, spoken or (mostly) unspoken. it's debilitatingâin the best way.Â
âbeautiful boy,â you coo, scratching behind his ear. he leans into your touch.
âiâm neither aâthose things,â he scoffs roughly, eyelids fluttering shut when your nails pass over that particular spot he loves.
âdont make me fight you, miller.â you tuck your face in the pillow again, snuggling back into him. his arms tighten around your middle in response. âits too early.â
Summary: Like a moth to a flame, you're drawn to Joel yet again.
Warnings: reader's got some deep insecurities and anxiety she's struggling with (self doubt, feeling not good enough, putting up walls, panic attacks, etc), language, smut (18+), piv sex, oral sex, competency kink, praise kink
Masterlist
It's been a week.
Seven full days since Joel was in your bed. And like a coward, you avoided going outside whenever his crew was working next door. But even if you wanted to, they didn't give you much of a reason. His crew was respectful and quieter, mostly because they began working indoors now. But you still caught glimpses of Joel frequently going in and out of the house to grab something from the trucks.
You hadn't spoken. It was like it never happened. But it did. You know it did, because his name and number are still scribbled at the bottom of the white board you have on your fridge, right underneath the list of items you need to grab from the grocery store next time you go. It glares at you every time you get milk for your coffee. Your gaze naturally drifts to the digits scrawled in his unique handwriting, like a beacon scanning the sea.
You never called him. You're not even sure what you would say if you did. Yet you can't bring yourself to erase his script from the board.
Around Thursday, your mind starts playing tricks on you. Right on schedule. You overanalyze everything and the further away you get from the last time you spoke to him, the more fuzzy the memory grows. What was his mood when he left? Did he regret it? Was he ashamed or feeling guilty? Is that why he never gave your house so much as a glance all week? Was he trying to forget?
It doesn't matter, you keep telling yourself. You didn't want anything more from him, you made that abundantly clear. So why are you still obsessing over it? Why are you even thinking about it now, a full week later, while you watch his crew eat lunch together in the shade on your neighbor's front lawn? Why are you scanning the group for those familiar broad shoulders and warm eyes and feeling disappointed when you can't find him?
Your computer monitor goes black from being left unattended for so long while you continue to look. You don't even notice.
He's avoiding you.
Well, you're avoiding him, aren't you?
You try to shake the invasive thoughts loose but they don't budge. Doubt begins to fester in the corners of your mind.
You set the parameters, you remind yourself. You're the one who didn't call him.
You pinch the bridge of your nose as the wave of insecurity washes over you.
It's easier this way. You don't get hurt this way.
You breathe slowlyâin, then out. Then do it again, repeating your mantra to yourself until the tightness in your throat eases and you can feel again.
"Jesus," you mutter to yourself. How pathetic. You had sex with the man once. You hardly know him and yet you still have the same issues you always have when it comes to men you've dated.
Slowly, your gaze lifts to look out your window again. Finally, you spot him. He's under a tree with two other workers with a cooler open in front of him. He's holding a half eaten sub in one hand and a clear gallon jug of water in the other. They're laughing about something and even from this distance, you can see that dimple appear next to the corner of his mouth. His eyes soften and crinkle a little bit when he smiles and says something back, making his crew laugh even harder.
Without realizing it, the tension in your shoulders loosens. Your pulse slows and your mind is no longer clouded with insecurities. You feel steady again.
Suddenly struck with what you think is a fabulous idea, you stand up, nearly knocking over your chair in the process.
"Cookies."
Some demon possesses you to hurry to your kitchen and whip open your fridge for a roll of chocolate chip cookie dough you bought a few weeks ago and you get to work. Your eyes only settle twice on his number scrawled with black ink on the board while you preheat your oven and slice up the roll.
When you slide the baking sheet onto the top shelf and close the oven with a soft, satisfying thud, you dust your hands and smile to yourself. You're far from a domestic goddess, but baking some premade cookies is certainly a skill you possess.
They work hard, right? There's no harm in bringing them cookies. It's not weird.
There's a tall, narrow cupboard next to the fridge where you store most of your dry goods, including the baking spray you're looking to return to its spot on the bottom shelf, but when you open the door and notice the mess of items scattered on all four shelves, you frown.
Glancing at the clock to confirm you have a full hour before your next meeting, you decide it's the perfect time to reorganize your pantry. It's definitely not because you're fighting the urge to pretty yourself up with a touch of makeup and a spritz of perfume at the thought of being close to Joel again soon.
Ten minutes later you have two shelves of items scattered around your kitchen floor. It feels good to clean and organize. It helps ground you when your anxiety flares up, like a gentle reminder you do have control. After disinfecting the shelves themselves, you carefully place all the items back, turning the labels forward and lining up cans in a perfectly straight line.
You stand to admire your work with a pleased smile. Halfway done. Just as you lean forward to empty the last two shelves, you smell it. Burning.
You forgot to set a timer. Shit.
With a panic, you straighten up way too quickly, cracking your head on the top shelf of your pantry in the process. You cry out and stumble back, rubbing the sore spot just in time to watch in horror as the wood snaps from its place against the wall and shifts forward.
"No!" you yell, but it's hopeless. A bag of flour explodes on the ground. A glass jar of something pickled comes next. Salad dressing that is thankfully in a plastic bottle follows, along with a half opened bag of cookies and some stale cereal. You close your eyes so you don't have to watch the rest but you can hear it, your tidy little world giving into a chaotic mess at your feet.
If you were a crier, now would be the time. Instead, the usual wave of panic surges through your veins, your pulse speeds up, and your throat starts to close.
"It's f-fine," you whisper to yourself, forcing your eyes open. "It's just... I can fix this." But it's not helping. And the cookies are still burning. And your life is still crumbling. And you're still not good enâ
Stop. Your eyes squeeze shut again.
One, two, three, breathe. One, two, three, out.
Your jaw is clenched hard but you force yourself to go through the motions to calm your body.
Triage. It's what you do best. You do it at work all the time.
Your eyes fly open and you look around.
Oven first. A fire is worse.
You grab a mitt and yank the burned cookies out of the oven, only to take the tray and put it immediately on your back porch so the smoke doesn't set off your smoke detector because you're fairly certain that high pitched squeal will actually be the last straw right now.
Second. The mess on the floor. Liquid traveling under appliances is bad. That means more work. So you set yourself on stopping the slow moving trail of vinegar and god knows what else.
Once that is cleaned up, you begin to feel calmer. Actually seeing progress being made helps, it always does. Cleaning up the flour and cereal and all the other dry goods is easier. Your throat relaxes and your pulse returns to normal.
Your floors needed to be mopped anyway, you think after all the shattered pieces of glass are swept up. Not to be deterred, you grab a new baking pan, put in another batch of cookies, and actually set the fucking timer before you get a mop and clean up the floors from any sticky residue.
Once the batch is finished in the ovenâlooking perfect, actuallyâyour kitchen smells clean and your life is back in order. Just the way you like it.
"Alright," you breathe, flicking some hair out of your eyes. You find a cheap plate made for outdoor entertaining and place the cookies on it, trying to make them look as aesthetically pleasing as possible, but at the end of the day they're just... cookies from a tube. Whatever.
You peer out your window, readying yourself to take them over to the crew. That's when it hits you: what the hell do you even say? 'Here's some cookies, you're working so hard on a house that isn't even mine'?
You could give them just to Joel, but you know that'll look even worse. At that point you might as well just get a shirt that says we had sex on it.
This was a stupid idea. What were you thinking?
And what's worse is, if you don't give these cookies away, you'll end up eating them all by yourself in two days.
From your spot in your living room, you can see some of the men beginning to stand. Their break is coming to an end, along with your window.
Apology cookies. That's it!
You'll take these cookies over as an apology for being annoyed with them the last few weeks.
There's only time to rake your fingers through your hair once or twice. That's good. You don't want to look like you're trying too hard.
Yeah, like bringing them fresh baked cookies doesn't look like you're trying hard.
After wrapping the plate tightly with plastic wrap, you head out your front door with what you hope is a casual look on your face and an energetic pep in your step. Gravel crunches under your sneakers as you walk across your driveway, alerting a couple of the men to your presence. You try to ignore the kick in your chest the closer each step brings you to Joel.
"Well, look who it is," one of the older workers says wearily when you're within earshot. You smile sweetly at him, closing the distance between you and the crew. It's impossible not to notice the way they all stop laughing and talking as you approach, making you feel like you're about to give a presentation in front of an audience or something. It's certainly not helping your nerves, but you power through as if you were leading a meeting at work.
"Gentlemen," you greet them, coming to a stop. Joel is the last to turn but something tells you he knew it was you that was approaching. He doesn't look surprised to see you. In fact, you think he looks pleased. At least, based on the way he lets his gaze slowly take you in tells you he's pleased.
You ignore the way your stomach flutters.
"Oh," you say lightly with a smirk when you lock eyes with him. "Gentlemen... and Joel," you correct yourself, making some of the guys chuckle. Joel included.
"Somethin' you need, darlin'?" he asks. That familiar southern twang has your pulse skipping in your throat.
"Need? No. Want? Yes." You lift the plate of wrapped cookies for them to see. Instantly, their eyes light up as they all look at the plate. All except Joel, who keeps his gaze directly on you. "I wanted to come over and give all of you these cookies. As an apology."
"I'll take those, thank you," a scrawny looking younger guy with a terrible sunburn says, snatching the plate from your hands. You smile as he takes it over to the crew.
"Apology for what?" Joel presses, still not showing the least bit interest in the snacks. The rest of the men have started tearing into the plastic, your conversation no doubt fading into the background.
"Apology for being... rigid these last few weeks." You clasp your hands in front of you, addressing solely Joel now that the crew has forgotten you existed.
Joel steps closer so he can lower his voice. "Feelin' rigid again today, sweetheart?"
You bristle but your face gives you away. He can read how flustered you are at the vaguest hint of your last encounter and it only encourages him.
"No!" you choke, "Jesus, Joel. I'm just trying to be nice."
"That so?"
Your eyes flicker to his crew. Not a single soul is paying either of you any attention.
"Of course. What else would it be?"
A deep, thoughtful hum rumbles in his chest as he inches a little closer. The heat of his gaze sets your skin on fire. Every spot of your body he lingers on comes alive.
"Could be you were lookin' for my attention," he says rather boldly. You scoff even though your cheeks flush almost immediately.
"Don't flatter yourself. Actuallyâ" You turn to face him head on, arms crossed defiantly across your chest. You tilt your chin up to pin him with your most confident glare. "I was hoping to borrow a drill. So, yeah, you could say I have an ulterior motive. Not the one you wish, though."
"A... drill?" he repeats, voice filled with doubt. His brown eyes sparkle with amusement as he looks down at you, his shadow shielding you from the powerful Texas sun. "What do you need a drill for?"
You jut a thumb casually over your shoulder, back towards the direction of your house. "I broke a shelf in my pantry. I need to fix it."
His mouth twitches as he thinks over what you said, like he's trying to decide if you're lying or not. You can see the gears in his head working, no doubt trying to come up with something to say that will make you squirm.
"Sure. I'll let you borrow a drill. You know how to use one?"
You shrug. "How hard can it be?"
Joel rolls his eyes with a sigh before motioning you towards the lawn. "C'mon, Handy Ma'am."
You laugh at the lame joke and follow him to his truck. Now that his back is to you, you allow yourself a few moments to admire his strong shoulders and easy gait. It's exciting, knowing what this man is capable of behind closed doors, surrounded by people who wouldn't suspect a thing.
Joel opens the back of his cab and reaches forward with a grunt. You bite your lower lip and try not to stare too long at the way his shirt rides up, revealing just the slightest hint of his boxers. Suddenly, your mouth feels dry.
"Think this one'll do the job," he says, emerging with a yellow cordless drill. He holds it up and presses the trigger a few times in rapid succession, making sure the battery is charged before handing it over to you.
"Thank you," you say, eyes widening briefly when you feel the weight of it in your hand. It's heavier than you expect.
Joel must see your uncertainty and quirks an eyebrow at you. "You need help?"
"No," you shake your head quickly. "I can do it."
You can't, but he doesn't have to know. You can pretend you fixed it when you return it to him later.
A slightly awkward moment of silence settles between you, like you're both trying to find a reason to keep the conversation going without looking like you're desperate. You pretend to inspect the drill while Joel casually studies the sky.
"Wondered if I scared you off," he finally says, chin still tilted upwards. "Didn't wanna pester you or nothin' but... I was thinkin' 'bout you."
The softness in his voice catches you off guard. "Oh, uh..." you stammer, surprised. "No. Not scared. Just... busy."
"Yeah. Good. That's good." He drops his gaze to look at you once before staring at something on the ground. His jaw rocks from side to side and he clears his throat. It occurs to you then that he's... uneasy? Nervous?
It shouldn't, but it relaxes you for some reason.
"I thought about you, too," you admit quietly. His face lights up with a cocky grin and you immediately regret it.
"Yeah? You thought 'bout me?"
"Oh, shut up."
"No, tell me. What were you thinkin' 'bout?"
"I take it back."
"Can't. It's already out there."
"You're impossible!" You aim the drill at him and press the trigger. The gentle whir acts as a soundtrack to his laughter, which only makes you scowl.
"Just got one question for you," he says, still laughing. Despite yourself, you can feel the corners of your mouth tug upwards at the way he looks at you like you're the only thing worth looking at in that moment.
"What?" you reply dryly.
He leans in then and you forget to breathe, nearly dropping the drill in your hand from the way he smells like the earth and coffee and some spicy undertone. Probably deodorant or shampooâ
Stop it.
"Wanna screw?"
You gasp, face hot as you quickly scan your surroundings. Luckily, no one overheard him. At least, you don't think they did. Still, you're about to rip into him when you turn back around only to find him smugly standing there holding up a... well, an actual screw.
"Excuse me?" you hiss.
"Said... doâyouâwantâaâscrew?"
"That is not what you said."
"You're hearin' what you wanna hear, darlin'."
You make a frustrated noise and turn on your heel, back towards your house. "Thanks for the drill!"
"Hey, wait!"
"No, Joel, I don't want a screw!"
Some of the men in his crew chuckle as you march past but you don't care.
"I was just jokin'," Joel says after catching up with you. "Gimme that, I'll do it," he adds, reaching for the drill.
"I can do it."
"No, you can't. You ain't ever touched a drill before in your life, have you?"
Your pace slows and your grip on the drill loosens. "Well, no, not technicallyâ"
"Then lemme help you. It'll take ten minutes, I don't mind." Joel turns and walks backwards next to you so he can address his men. "Imma help her fix her shelf, get back to workin' on that framin', need it done 'fore the concrete guys come next week."
You hear an amused murmur behind you and you stiffen. You don't need to hear what they said. You already know.
"They're gonna think something's going on," you scold him, embarrassed as you stomp up your porch steps.
"Well, somethin' is goin' on," he argues. You stop dead in your tracks and turn on him, making him stumble.
"This is not like last time," you warn him, pointing a finger at his chest. His wide, tanned, sweaty, gorgeous chest.
"I know, I know," he says, palms in the air. You stare at him for another moment, making sure he understood and was being serious before lowering your hand and offering him the drill.
"Good. Follow me."
You miss his sly grin when you turn to open your door.
***
"How the hell'd you do this?"
"Huh?"
Joel gestures to the splintered wood. "This. You take a hammer to it?"
"No, Iâmy head, I knocked into it when I was cleaning."
Joel gives you an incredulous look before focusing back on the shelf. "Goddamn. You alright?"
You huff, brushing off his concern. "Of course. Can you fix it?"
Joel clicked his tongue as he examines the wood further before peeking inside your pantry. "Gonna need a new piece of wood. I got some scrap in the back of my truck, gimme a second, be right back."
"Oh, forget it. It's too much trouble. I'll figure somethâ"
"It ain't too much trouble," Joel says firmly, cutting you off. He gives you a sincere look, like he wants to make sure you understand. "It'll take a minute. You're doin' me the favor, anyway. Less wood I gotta unload later."
Before you can argue further, he disappears down your hallway and back out the front door. Your screen swings shut and you hear the dull thud of his boots hitting your porch, then the sound fades and you're left all alone in your kitchen, struggling yet again with your inner demons.
You're a burden.
You never even called him, you don't deserve his help.
He doesn't care about that. He doesn't care about you like that. He got laid, he got what he wanted and left his number because he thought it was the right thing to do.
It didn't mean anything.
"Oh, my god. What is wrong with me?" you mutter, rubbing your eyes in frustration. You shake it off, straighten your shoulders and smooth out your shirt just in time because a moment later, you hear Joel jog up your front steps and open the door.
You take a deep breath and force a smile when he triumphantly enters your kitchen, holding up a piece of wood.
"This should do it."
"Great."
Joel kneels down with a heavy grunt and gets to work, but something caught your eye: he returned wearing a tool belt.
It looks good on him.
Snap out of it.
"Do you want something to drink?" You're already moving towards a cupboard, pulling down two glasses before he answers.
"Sure."
You have half a pitcher of lemonade you made a few days agoâthe powdered kind, obviously. Your culinary prowess only extends to cookie dough logs, not reaming citrus.
There's a high pitched squeal from the drill and the grating sound of wood being punctured and twisted by metal. You wince and set his lemonade down on the counter behind him, then take yours a few feet away to your small kitchen island. With a little jump, you hoist yourself up to sit on the edge of the counter, bare legs dangling over the sides as you sip your lemonade and watch Joel work.
He unclips a flashlight from his belt and pops it between his teeth so he can see what he's doing. He's all business, focused entirely on doing the job and nothing else. There's no awkward air, no sexually charged quips. When Joel Miller is working, he's putting his entire focus on doing a good job.
It's kind of hot, when you think about it. His head must be an encyclopedia of manual labor. He knows the exact right screw to use, the right wood... he knows to avoid the back panel because there's likely electrical running back there for your refrigerator. He knows to install the shelf a little lower than before because you're shorter than the pantry.
He's smart. A different kind of smart than you're used to. Watching him work gives you a new found appreciation for him.
You don't realize you're staring until he pockets the flashlight and peers out from inside the pantry with a knowing smirk.
"See somethin' you like?"
Normally, you'd bite back with some sarcastic remark to cut him off at the knees, but this time, you're flustered and you can't shake it off in time to think of anything clever.
"Uhâ" You clear your throat and take a sip from your glass, hoping he can't see the way you're breathing a little faster. But he does see it. He sees everything. The smile slips from his face and his gaze darkens fractionally when you rub the back of your neck and take a deep breath before responding. "How long have you, uhâhow long have you done this?"
Joel pauses a moment, still leaning halfway inside your pantry with the drill poised against the wood. He can see the way you fidget on your counter, the way your thighs press together and your teeth dig into your lower lip.
"What? Construction?" he eventually asks. You nod. "All my life. Started out at a landscaping company right outta high school, then went to U Tech to be a welder. Took some classes here 'n there 'bout different things. Hopped around a bit to find what suited me best."
"And what was that?"
He frowns. "What?"
"What suited you best?" you clarify. Joel smiles and drags his gaze back to your shelf. Before pressing the trigger for the drill, he answers.
"None of it. Liked it all, so I started this business. Little bit of everythin' that way."
The sound of the drill drowned out the space left for you to reply.
He makes it sound so simple. Like of course he just started a business from the ground up because that's what he knew he wanted to do. And he seems to be good at it. And enjoy it. You wonder if he knows how rare that is.
You're too lost in your own musings to realize he had been talking. You blink and refocus on him, standing next to your pantry with the drill at his side and his tool belt slung comfortably around his waist, looking at you expectantly.
"Huh?"
"I said, how long you been doin' your job?"
"Oh. Uh, almost ten years. Started as an intern during my final semester of college and accepted a job after graduating. Never really considered anywhere else."
"Why?"
You swing your legs and shrug. "Easier than starting over, I guess."
"Do you like it?"
You think about his question. Do you? You want to say yes, but you're not even sure anymore. You're pretty sure you used to, right?
"I'm good at it," you finally say. But Joel sees through it. Of course he does.
"Didn't really answer the question."
You laugh and look down at your freshly mopped floors. "I like that I'm good at it, how about that?"
Joel hums to himself and slowly turns to examine your shelf. He gives it a little shake, taps the top to make sure it's steady, then tests the door before making a satisfied noise and stepping back.
"You're all set here."
You lean forward a bit to look inside the pantry, impressed with how quickly and neatly he was able to fix it. There's no question you wouldn't have been able to do the job half as good.
"Thank you."
Joel grins, giving you a flash of that dimple, before picking up a few loose screws from the ground and pocketing them somewhere in his belt. You catch a glimpse of his stomach and you swallow hard. Your gaze shifts briefly to the clockâyou still have twenty minutes before your next meeting.
"Anythin' else?" he asks, glancing around the kitchen. He picks up the lemonade and leans a hip against your counter while he drinks. His eyes settle on the whiteboard on your fridge, where his writing is still scrawled with his name and number, and guilt blooms in your chest.
"Yeah," you say softly, pulling his attention from the board. Slowly, he sets down the empty glass where he found it. He raises his brows, waiting, then you lift your hand and curl your finger, beckoning him forward. His expression softens and he does as you wish, closing the space between you until he's standing between your knees, inches apart. You drop your hand and hook your finger around his tool belt, giving him a playful smirk. That's all he needs to see. He presses both palms flat against the countertops on either side of your hips and tips his face down, brushing his lips gently over your own.
He's testing. Wondering if he's reading the room right. You respond with a little more pressure and he relaxes into the kiss with a sigh. Your arms loosely circle around his neck and you part your lips, inviting his tongue to dance with your own. He's so warm and smells so good, you almost forgot. Your mind goes hazy as you give in, letting your fingers thread gently through the hair at the nape of his neck. He practically purrs into your mouth, clearly enjoying the affection.
"I have twenty minutes," you breathe, pulling back just enough to whisper the offer.
"I can work with that," he replies just as softly. Then his mouth is pressing eagerly to yours, sealing the deal.
His hands slide up your shirt, mapping the skin underneath. He makes a pleased sound and kisses you a little harder when you shift forward, pressing yourself closer.
Joel flattens his palm against your spine, drawing you in. You welcome it by wrapping your legs around his waist and deepening the kiss with a soft sound.
He's so good at this, you think. He's good at making you feel good, at turning your brain off. All the static in your head leading up to this moment vanishes under his touch.
You break the kiss when your leg slides down and collides with a tape measure strapped to his hip. You glare at it like it offended you but Joel doesn't noticeâhis mouth trails down your jaw, pausing at your throat to graze his teeth gently over your pulse point. A shiver rolls down your spine.
"As much as I like this," you murmur, unlocking your legs from his waist, "it's gotta go."
You tug hopelessly at the tool belt and Joel chuckles, low and deep next to your ear.
"Oh, you like it, huh?" he teases while simultaneously dropping his hands to his belt. You roll your eyes.
"Don't start."
"You got a little fantasy? That what this is?" He unfastens the tool belt and leaves it in a heap on the floor.
"No, it is not a fantâ"
"I can dress up like all the village people if that's what you're into."
"Oh, my god, shut up," you groan before yanking him forward, covering your mouth over his. But you're smiling. He can tell.
His hands fly up to cup your face, his fingertips dig into your cheeks, and he kisses you so carefully that it catches you off guard. You lean into it and let him set the pace. You don't mind so much. His lips massage your mouth open and then his tongue dips past your teeth, searching for its mate. He tastes like lemon, sharp and sweet against your tongue, which undoubtably tastes the same, yet you think it tastes better on him.
He's a great kisser, but you'll never give him the satisfaction of admitting it.
"Fifteen minutes," you warn him, already breathless when you whisper against his lips. He smiles and his eyes crinkle in that way that makes your heart stutter so you push that silly feeling down before sliding off the counter and dropping to your knees.
You have to stifle a laugh when his eyes grow wide. His button is already undone and you have his zipper halfway down before he finds his voice.
"Y-youâwe don't g-gottaâ"
"I want to," you tell him, hooking your fingers over the waistband of his jeans and pulling them down his legs.
"Darlin'â"
"Joel," you say firmly. You stare up at him from your spot on the kitchen floor. He just continues to flounder and grow red in the face, but at least he stopped talking. "Let me do this. Please?"
His eyelids flutter shut and he groans. "C'mon, that ain't fair."
"What?"
"Sayin' please like that."
"How'd I say it?" you tease as you pull his boxers down to his ankles. His cock bobs to attention and you shimmy forward, pressing your thighs together to quell the ache burning between your legs. When your hand gently wraps around the base, he gasps and his eyes fly open. You start to stroke him, admiring how thick and hard he is for you already.
"Joel? You didn't answer me."
"Huh?" His voice is about two octaves higher.
"I saidâ" You lean forward, making sure to hold eye contact when you stick your tongue out and slowly drag a thick stripe up the underside of his cock. His arms fly forward to brace himself on the counter behind you. "How'd I say it?"
You flick the tip of your tongue over the head, licking up a small drop of arousal that rests there. Joel swallows hard and takes a deep breath, steadying himself. When he's ready, he drops his voice so it's rough and deep above you.
"Said it like you might die if I don't stuff my cock in that pretty little mouth of yours."
You grin right before wrapping your lips around him with an exaggerated moan. His eyes roll to the back of his head and his jaw slowly drops the further you take him, inch by inch, only stopping once he tickles the back of your throat.
"Oh, fuâgoddamnâ"
One hand finds the back of your head and his fingers splay wide. He's not pressing you forward or tugging on your hair like other men before him had done. It's just a steady, grounding weight as you begin to move, slowly at first, savoring the way his breath hitches every time you swallow him again.
"You're good at that," he gasps, watching you bob up and down. Your fist covers the rest of him you can't take, twisting and pumping in rhythm. He groans again and a fresh wave of wetness pools between your thighs. "S-so good. That's it. Tha-a-t's it, oh, shitâlook so pretty like this, honey. Shoulda known that smart m-mouth has many talents."
It shouldn't, but the praise warms your chest like the soft glow from hazy sunbeams. You don't think he even realizes it, that's the worst part. He's not saying it to get what he wants. He genuinely means it when he compliments you.
It propels you, making you suck harder, moan louder, and even though tears sting the backs of your eyes from how badly your jaw burns, you don't stop because Joel just keeps telling you over and over and over again in that warm, deep drawl what a good girl you are and you make him feel so good and you drive him fuckin' crazy.
"Slow downâwaitâ"
His voice is pained. It's the only thing that pulls you out of it. You slow down but you keep him in your mouth, sucking gently on the tip as you gaze up at him curiously with watery eyes.
And Joel? Joel looks like a complete wreck.
His face is flushed. Neck, too. He's panting and a little sweaty at the temples just from the few minutes you've been on your knees. It has you brimming with pride, and from the looks of it, forcing him to hold eye contact with his cock filling your mouth is just making him crumble even more.
"Jesus Christ, I'm gonna come if you don't stop," he whines. Your tongue slowly swirls around his girth and you just tip your head to the side, giving him a look that says, well, that's the point.
He receives your wordless message and shakes his head.
"Wanna fuck you. Wanna feel that tight pussy again." Your eyes dart to the clock on the wallâten minutes. The hand on the back of your head tightens and you focus back on his face. His throat bobs before he speaks. "Gonna let me, sweetheart? Gonna let me make you come?"
You make a frustrated noise before releasing him from your mouth and stand up. His dick twitches from the cool air of your kitchen, wet and angry looking from being left unattended. Without thinking, you turn around so your back is to Joel and begin to unbutton your shorts, but he swivels you back around to face him.
"Nuh-uh. Wanna see you."
You open your mouth to protestâyou're pressed for time as it is, pausing and picking this up in your bedroom is a mood killer at this pointâbut he just scoops you up and somehow, with his jeans and underwear bunched around his anklesâcarries you a few feet away to your kitchen table.
"Jesus," you murmur when your back hits the firm wood. But then his mouth is on you and his hands are pushing down your shorts and you forget what you were annoyed about in the first place.
He pulls away only briefly, just to bend down to fish a condom from his wallet while you work on removing your panties. With eight minutes left, the thick tip of his cock is finally pressing into you and like a puppet on a string, your spine arches and your jaw drops at the stretch.
"Shit," you whisper, breathing deep as he settles inside you.
"Yeah, miss me, sweetheart?"
You scrunch your nose with your eyes pinched shut as you adjust to the heavy feeling of him prying you open.
"Don't... get cocky," you breathe, thighs relaxing around his hips with a sigh.
"Don't get what?" Joel pushes in deeper and you gasp.
"Asshole," you mutter, but when your eyelids flutter open, he can see the traces of amusement you're desperately trying to hide. "You're the one begging for my pussy a minute ago," you clip back, and Joel smirks before he shifts his hips.
"Got me there," he says, slowly thrusting back inside you. A traitorous soft moan slips past your lips and his gaze darkens, like a predator honing in on its prey. He continues to work you open with slow, deep thrusts, lost in the way you respond to each one and wishing more than ever he could have dragged you to your bed, stripped you naked, and taken his time with you.
"Five... minutes..." you remind him when you start to roll your hips in sync with his movements. Joel's eyes dart to the clock and he groans before falling forward, caging you in on your table. He buries his face against your throat and begins to move faster. The table legs scrape against the floor each time your hips collide and you roll your head backwards as the heat builds low in your stomach.
"Right there," you gasp. He grunts and fucks you harder, the head of his cock kissing a soft spot deep inside that is slowly making you come undone. His lips messily suck at your throat, the sharp scratch from his beard sending chills down your spine.
Your fingers get lost in his hair, desperate for something to hold onto as he pushes you closer and closer to the edge. It's so easy to fall back into this with him. Dangerously so. After the first time, you thought you got it out of your system. Unfortunately for your work hard now and play later mindset, the hot, annoying, funny construction worker next door has figured out how to read you like a book. He's gotten under your skin and burrowed into your brain, taking up space where once you held plans on advancing in your company, ideas for the latest projects, and innovative ways to acquire new business.
Case in point, you never take a lunch break, and yet here you are, baking cookies like June fucking Cleaver and getting railed on your kitchen table two minutes before your next call.
"Joel," you pant, vision going blurry at the edges, "m'close."
He lifts his head from your throat so he can study your face, just like he said he wanted to do. He grunts, hooking one of your legs over his forearm to widen your hips. You cry out and tug on his hair. His eyes roll back for a moment before he blinks hard and snaps out of it.
"Let go," he says, teeth clenched like he's fighting off his orgasm, "give it to me. C'mon, know you can do it. Lemme feel you."
You writhe and whimper, arching your back to deepen the angle. You're so close that it burns the back of your throat. But the ticking clock on the wall is adding too much pressure and you feel yourself starting to lose what he so expertly built up.
"Iâfuckâ"
You squeeze your eyes shut and make a frustrated noise. Joel senses it: the way your muscles give up, the exasperated furrow of your brow, and he quickly grabs your chin.
"Look at me."
His voice is so deep and commanding that your eyes snap open in shock. He's inches away from your face, forcing you to stare deep into his eyes. His hips never stop. He never loses rhythm, still hitting that sensitive spot that holds you right at the edge.
He doesn't say anything else. Just makes you hold his gaze so you can see the fire in his eyes and the desperation on his face.
Don't think about the time. Don't you dare think about work. Stay with him. Focus on him. On this.
Another sharp snap of his hips sends you soaring. Relief rolls down your spine and through your limbs. An embarrassing sound rips from your throat and your cheeks burn but you don't look away. He stays locked on you, watching the way your face melts with pleasure. He growls low and fucks you harder, chasing his own high. Your table knocks loudly against the wall but you're too lost in a hazy bubble to notice.
"Good job," he breathes, and your heart stutters. "Feels better, don't it? You deserve to feel good, baby."
Your eyes roll back and you let out a weak moan from the praise. The words hit you just right and he knows it. Joel smiles to himself before feverishly capturing your lips with his and letting go with a heavy groan.
Your chest tightens when his hips slow and you wonder what it would feel like to have him dripping out of you during your call. You wonder if the people on the other end would be able to tell what he just did to you.
Your phone pings brightly on the counter and you both freeze, mouths still pressed together but unmoving now. With a sigh, you tilt your head away to look for it, but Joel pushes himself up and grabs it himself, handing it over while still buried deep inside you.
"Hope you don't gotta be on camera," he grins.
You tap in your passcode on your phone and laugh softly. "I think I'll make up some technical issue."
Joel makes a pleased noise before settling back down on top of you to catch his breath. You join the call and pray no one asks you any questions for at least ten more minutes because he seems so content to just wrap his arms around you and quietly bury his face against the side of your neck.
This is nice, you think, closing your eyes while the familiar sound of boring higher-ups chirps from the speaker of your phone. Your heart rates slow in tandem and the sweat cools on your skin as the next few minutes tick by. Your fingers drift unwillingly to his hair and you play idly with the soft curls there. You swear you feel him relax even further into your hold from your gentle touch.
It's peaceful but you know it needs to end. He needs to get back to work. So do you. But for once, you don't want to be the one to push someone away first.
The choice gets taken from you anyway when you suddenly hear your name from the phone and your eyes snap open. You reach to unmute and Joel pushes himself up on his hands, careful not to make any noise.
"Yes, I believe that's correct at this juncture, but I do have a follow up meeting on the books with the client next week where I'll confirm."
The robotic voice thanks you and you mute yourself again before your gaze slides to Joel.
"Guess that's my cue," he says with a lopsided grin, then he winces when he pulls his half hard cock from between your legs.
You watch lazily as he rolls off the condom and tosses it in your trash. What do you say now? This isn't something you regularly do. Joel doesn't make it awkward and you both have to get back to work, so there's no reason to linger, yet you still feel like you need to say something.
You push yourself up and rub the back of your neck before hunting for your panties and shorts on the floor.
"Uh, thanks," you say, buttoning your shorts. Joel is picking up his tool belt and when you speak, he glances up.
"For the sex or for the shelf?"
You laugh. "Both. But mostly the shelf."
Joel gives you a teasing look and sets the belt on your counter so his hands are free when he crosses the room to join you.
"Y'know," he begins, rubbing his chin, "next time you wanna see me, you don't gotta go through all the trouble of burnin' cookies and breakin' shelves. Left my number right there."
He juts his thumb over his shoulder towards your fridge and your gaze follows. Your stomach twists with guilt again. You didn't expect him to bring that up, but you suppose you'd want an answer if it was you putting yourself out there.
Then you blink and look up at him in surprise. "Burned cookies?"
He grins and his head tilts towards your back deck, where the charred baking sheet of cookies still remains, solidified like a goddamn fossil.
Your face flares with heat. "Oh."
"Yeah. Oh."
Your phone is in your hand, executives are yapping away. You should be listening. You want to get ahead, right? Every meeting is a chance to make a splash. Make your mark. And yet... it's the last thing on your mind.
"Listen," you sigh, and Joel folds his arms across his chest. You drop your gaze so you don't get distracted by the muscles straining against his worn, soft shirt. And you definitely stop thinking about what it would feel like to wear that very same shirt on your own body. Because those thoughts don't have a place here. Not with you. Not anymore.
"I'm listenin'," he urges, lifting one eyebrow.
"I don't do..." Your hands flail as you search for the right word. Joel just waits, amused. "I tend to stay away from... relationships," you say, instantly feeling raw and exposed. You don't need to explain why. You don't owe him anything. Just leave it at that.
"Honey," Joel smiles, "I ain't lookin' to buy you a ring, I just wanna buy you a beer."
You chew your bottom lip, avoiding his gaze. He gives you a minute to think it over, but when it becomes clear you don't have a response, he shrugs and turns to pick up his belt.
"Ain't that serious," he adds, masking his hurt by clearing his throat. "Just thought it'd be nice to talk to you when neither of us gotta run back to work."
"Why?"
His hands still and he slowly turns around. "Huh?"
You shift uncomfortably from foot to foot, looking a little timid. It's not a look he's used to seeing on you.
"Why... do you want to talk to me?" you finally whisper, gaze glued to the ground. It hits him then that whatever walls you built up must be for a reason, something that cuts much deeper than his initial assessment of you being the overachiever, workaholic type.
He makes sure to straighten his spine and take a deep breath, facing you full on so you know what he's about to say means something.
"'Cause I like you, sweetheart. And I wanna get to know you better."
The softness in his voice makes you flinch. He lets you sit with it for a few more minutes, not rushing you, not saying anything more. He waits patiently while your brain turns over what he's said until you finally blink and meet his eye.
The walls are back up, but it's gentler now.
"Okay."
"Okay?"
"I'll think about it."
"Is the answer okay, or you'll think 'bout it?"
You roll your eyes. "Same thing."
"It ain't. Seeâokay implies: yes, Joel, I'll give you a call tonight. I'll tell you my favorite bar and when I'm free, and I'll even let you pick me up in your beautiful, shiny truckâ"
"Your truck is not beautiful."
He raises a finger in warning. "Don't talk bad 'bout her again. Hurt her feelin's last time."
When you crack a smile, Joel does the same. His chest lifts to see you happy and out of whatever dark place you disappeared to inside your head a moment ago. He doesn't like that, and he makes a note to be extra careful with you until you're willing to tell him more.
The voices coming from your speakerphone grow louder as a few different men talk over one another, drawing your attention down to your hand. Joel decides not to push you further and heads towards the door, tool belt slung over his shoulder.
"You know where to find me," he calls when he opens your front door. You look up but stay where you are in your kitchen. "I'll be waitin'," he adds after a pause, then quietly shuts the door behind him.
Your heart thuds loudly in your chest when you're left all alone once again. The conversation happening in your hand should be your primary focus, but it's not. The men are loud, but the numbers scrawled on your fridge are louder.
That familiar, creeping fear claws its way up your throat. That swell of panic and a fresh wave of uncertainty follows.
It's just a beer. It's not serious. It's not likeâ
With a determination you haven't felt outside of work in a long while, you stomp to your fridge and stare at his name scrawled in black ink. He's got blocky writing. But his numbers are sharp.
You smirk.
Of course the numbers are sharp. He's a contractor. He lives and breathes numbers, just like you, but in a very different way.
Don't overthink it.
You punch the numbers into your phone and stare blankly at the empty text message. You swallow tightly, ignoring the pang in your chest and the voices arguing over projections or referrals or something that seems incredibly insignificant now.
It's a big leap. Something you swore you'd never do again. Yet here you are, about to do it, because something about Joel just feels... different. And you're really interested in finding out if you're right.
What's the worst that could happen?
You wince.
Okay, bad question. You know the worst that could happen. You've lived it. Barely.
Stop it.
You take a deep breath and quickly tap out one word. Four letters. And hit send.
Summary: The construction company your neighbors hire to do work on their house are loud, inconsiderate, and quickly get under your skin. One man in particular seems hellbent on driving you crazy until one day, all that tension comes to a head.
Warnings: language, smut (piv sex), dirty talk, praise kink, light spanking, reader being kind of pissy and Joel fucks it out of her (but he's not mean), Joel gets turned on by bossy women
Masterlist
It's your day off. You had a long month, working extra late to meet deadlines and skipping plans with friends and family to perform at your fullest and get the promotion you so badly deserved, and now that the project was done and you impressed all right people, you rewarded yourself with a singular day off. But your neighbors had other plans.
It started before eight in the morning. Power tools, yelling, laughing, car doors slamming. It ruined the peace and tranquility of the post-school bus and rush hour lull. At first, you turned over and tried to fall back asleep. When that didn't work, you grabbed your extra pillow and pressed it against your ear. But after thirty minutes of chasing sleep with the sounds outside only growing louder, you gave up, blood boiling.
Maybe you should have coffee first, but unfortunately, your rage wins out. It's way too early. They're being far too noisy. And it's your goddamn day off!
You're seeing red when you tighten your robe around your waist, not even bothering to tie it but instead you hold it closed with your fist as you storm towards the front door. Your pajamas are just a tank top and sleep shorts, it's not anything scandalous anyway, especially given how hot Texas gets in the summer, but the last thing you want is a whole construction crew gawking at you while you give them a piece of your mind.
Music had just been turned on somewhere amongst the site. Tom Petty, you think, as you make your way over. Your flip flops snap angrily against the blacktop as you cross your driveway into your neighbor's front yard to survey the scene.
There's at least eight workers getting set up. Their trucks are parked all up and down the street, taking up every open spot. None of them glance your way as they unload tools, coolers, and supplies from their flatbeds. Your arms cross tightly and your brows furrow but the noise only gets louder.
"Excuse me?" you call out to no one in particular, but they don't hear you. Your jaw tightens. "Hey! Excuse me?"
"Can I help you?"
You swivel around, taken off guard by the deep voice behind you.
"Yes! Iâ"
Your words falter when you lay eyes on the man who snuck up on you. He's setting a ladder down by his feet, giving you time to take in his strong arms and broad shoulders underneath the stretch of his black short sleeved shirt, which still allows you a generous view of his tanned forearms. His jeans look lived in in the best kind of way. He wears them like a man who doesn't care what they look like, so long as they're comfortable. You push down the heat crawling up your neck by the time he straightens up, but when you see his face, you lose your train of thought once again.
Deep brown eyes, sharp nose, a chiseled jawline dusted with a short, somewhat patchy beard. Then he offers a soft, crooked smile that knocks the wind out of you to the point where you nearly forget your earlier anger.
Focus, you scold yourself.
"I live right over thereâ" You point behind him and he slowly turns, eyes scanning your modest home. "And my bedroom window is right there," you add. His eyes flicker to your open window towards the back of the house before he gives you his full attention again, something that makes your stomach flip. "I'd appreciate it if you guys could keep it down this early in the morning. It's disruptive to the whole neighborhood."
His devastatingly dark eyes glimmer with humor and even though he's not smiling, you can sense he's not taking you seriously. He makes a show of checking his watchâa beat up old thing with a green fabric bandâbefore looking back at you. "It's eight fifteen," he tells you, tone flat.
"Yeah, now," you say, rolling your eyes, "but this noise started earlier. It woke me up."
Now the corner of his mouth lifts and he slowly crosses his arms, which simultaneously irritates and excites the hell out of you.
"Sorry 'bout that, miss," he tells you, "but we're abidin' by city ordinance."
"I'm sure you are, but you have to admit it's disturbing the peace."
He regards you silently for a moment, his heavy gaze drifting up and down your frame. Suddenly, the thin robe you're wearing is too much and doesn't seem like enough all at once. An amused look flits across his face at one point before his eyes drop to the dirt.
"Could start at seven, technically," he finally says, "we're doin' you a favor by startin' at half past."
Your hackles raise at that. "Would you like me to thank you?"
He chuckles and shakes his head before meeting your gaze again. "Never said that. Just sayin' we're followin' the law, is all."
"I know you are," you huff, "all I'm suggesting is maybe keeping your voices a little lower."
He smirks and uncrosses his arms in favor of propping his hands on his hips, giving you a spectacular view of his wide chest.
"We could," he muses, pretending to think about your request while staring off at a fixed point somewhere over your shoulder, "if you ask real nice."
Your jaw drops at the same time your knees go weak. "Excuse me?"
He shrugs, still staring somewhere behind you in order to keep his shit eating grin from stretching across his face. "Just sayin', you came over here all hot under the collar. Had you asked nice, I mighta been able to help you out."
Your throat tightens. He's not trying to sound suggestive but your brain doesn't care. It's sending a wave of arousal right through you, causing your heart to slam against your ribs the more it builds.
"What's your name?" you demand with a clipped tone.
"Joel," he says without missing a beat.
"Joel," you repeat, "I'd like to speak with your boss."
"Ah, that'd be me."
He stretches out his hand with a grin. You ignore it and look back at the trucks until you spot a logo on the side and squint.
"Miller?" you guess. He nods. "Great. I'll be filing a complaint with the better business bureau."
You shoulder past him and try not to fixate on how good he smells, a mixture of motor oil, fresh soap, and coffee.
"Yeah? And what's your complaint gonna be for?" Joel calls after you. You ignore him and keep walking. You hear his deep chuckle before he picks up the ladder and it pisses you off even more, but you don't allow your rage to show until you're safely inside your house where you can seethe to yourself while making some coffee.

The rest of the week is uneventful. You have meetings downtown all week, a disruption to your usual remote work schedule, but a necessary evil you try your best to organize all at once every month. When you leave in the morning, the workers are just arriving. When you get home, they're already packed up or gone entirely. You nearly forget all about your intriguing run in with the mysterious Joel Miller until the following Monday, when you're back to working remotely.
You're an hour into emails and onto your second cup of coffee when you first hear the familiar ruckus next door. It starts with amused banter. Then truck doors slamming. Then the music kicks on. You shake your head, close your windows, and keep working.
With your television playing in the background, it's easier to block out some of the construction noise, but at around one in the afternoon you hear a repetitive, ear piercing beep, beep, beep during a work call that sets your teeth on edge.
Stones are pouring from the back of a metal flatbed. Shovels are scraping and banging loudly. And you do your best to stay focused, but when the call ends and you can't recall half the topics discussed, you can't hold back any more.
You spot Joel with his back to you, holding a shovel and shouting instructions to his crew while you approach. As if he can sense it, he turns when you're about ten feet away. His eyes sweep up and down your body and he grins before leaning on his shovel, amused by the anger currently forcing your feet forward.
"Don't tell me we woke you up again," he teases before you can even open your mouth. "It's after lunch. What's the matter now?"
You scowl at him, ignoring the way his crew sends you curious looks as they work.
"No," you snap, "I'm working. Or, at least, trying to! I have all my windows closed and I still can hardly hear myself think."
He looks at you like he's sizing you up, like he's trying to figure something out. "Thought you worked in an office somewhere."
You frown, slightly alarmed. "How would you know that?"
"Saw you couple times last week," he says hurriedly, as if he just realized how his comment sounded. "When I was gettin' here in the mornin', sometimes I'd see you gettin' in your car and drive off."
The silence that followed made Joel nervous. He shifted his weight and awkwardly scratched his beard while you tried to sort through what he just said without giving away your feelings. He noticed you? Was he looking for you, or did he just happen to see you?
"Uh, based on your spiffy clothes, just figured you worked somewhere fancy," he finished, rubbing the back of his neck before looking away.
You look down at the clothes you currently have onâdenim shorts and an old, oversized shirt... far from spiffy todayâbefore looking back up at him. To your surprise, you notice some red creeping up his neck and staining the apples of his cheeks. You have to bite your lower lip to keep yourself from smiling because despite how pleased it makes you to see the big, annoying, sexy construction guy next door all embarrassed because of you, you're here for a reason.
"Sometimes I work in an office, but most of the time I work at home," you explain, waving toward your house, "and right now, it's pretty much impossible to get anything done."
"Well, m'sorry 'bout that, but we gotta work, too."
You sigh and pinch the bridge of your nose. "I know. How much longer is this going to take?"
Joel clicked his tongue, making you lift your chin to look back up at him. The way he looks at you like you're something worth studying makes your heart skip a beat. Traitor.
"I'm offended you wanna get rid of us." His tone is back to teasing, and that glint in his eye confirms it. He likes pushing your buttons.
"I just want my quiet back! Myâyour customers are elderly! They can't hear for shit, they keep to themselves, they're the perfect neighbors! They aren't bothered by all this noise, but everyone else is!" Your voice is getting louder than you thought. People are beginning to notice, but you don't care.
"Everyone?" Joel repeats, narrowing his eyes now. "Strange, 'cause you're the only one cryin' 'bout it."
"I am not crying about it, I'm attempting to come to some sort of agreement, but you're being too... too..." Your hands flail in the air as you struggle to think of the right word.
"Too what?" Joel presses, stepping closer. You catch a whiff of his sweat mixed with sawdust and it makes your head swim. Focus.
You glare at him, blood on fire in your veins the longer he stands there looking all cocky.
"Misogynistic!" you exclaim triumphantly. Joel just blinks at you.
"What?"
You roll your eyes. "Means if a man were out here asking you to keep it down, you probably would, but instead you're giving a woman a hard time."
That seems to piss him off. His jaw sets into a tight line and he leans forward, voice low and dangerous. "Now you listen here," he says, and the way his demeanor suddenly shifted makes your spine straighten. "I'll allow for alotta shit, but I ain't gonna stand here and let you spin some wild story when you don't even know me or my crew. That's disrespectful and untrue."
You swallow tightly, unable to tear your gaze away from his eyes. They're so dark and stormy when he's legitimately mad that it's hard to look away.
"Sorry," you mumble, "but you're not taking me seriously, what else am I gonna think?"
His gaze softens then. His shoulders loosen. And the clouds clear from his eyes. The playful glimmer returns and you swear you see a ghost of a smile tug at his lips before he casually says, "I'll prove it to you. Bring out your husband or boyfriend or whoever and I'll tell him the same things I've been tellin' you."
"I don't have a husband or boyfriend," you answer before you even realize the trap you stepped in. His face lights up but he plays it off with ease.
"That's a relief." Your eyes widen and he grins. "'Cause if you had some guy hidin' in there all this time, lettin' his woman handle all the dirty work, gripin' to me while wearin' short shorts or a see-through robe? That wouldn't be much of a man."
Then he turned on his heel to join his crew, leaving you to weave through the rollercoaster of emotions he just dumped on you for the rest of the afternoon.

Over the next few days, something slightly changed. You found yourself going outside more, lingering around your car or taking a while to get your mail just to catch a glimpse of Joel. Usually, he'd catch your eye and give you a small smile, but that was the extent of it. Nothing overtly friendly and nothing mean, either. He was very good at being polite and cordial, which infuriated you. It made it impossible to figure out exactly what he was thinking. You replayed so many looks and conversations in your head to the point where you were paralyzed trying to pick apart every inflection and glance.
Why do you care anyway? you kept asking yourself. You never provided an answer.
It's the combination of your frustration with yourself as well as Joel's confusing signals that cause you to find more things to complain about, although you never admit it. But every interaction with Joel leaves you more aggravated and pent up than the last.
"That's not the property line. This is the property line," you had argued with him on Tuesday.
"It's just four inches."
"That's nine inches, easy."
Joel had tsked sympathetically under his breath. "Oh, darlin', if someone out there's tellin' you that's nine inches, I'm so sorry."
On Thursday morning, he had parked his truck in your driveway.
"I need to have my driveway clear!"
"I know, I know, it was only for a minute til the concrete truck comesâ"
"I don't care! Park on the street!" you had yelled, but the angrier you got, the more pleased Joel looked.
"No parkin' left on the street."
"Then park on the lawn," you said, crossing your arms and jutting out your hip. His eyes had drifted down, noting you chose to wear a shirt that showed a little more cleavage than usual.
"Careful, sweetheart. Keep yellin' at me like this and I'll fall in love with you."
Every time he said something flirty like that, it sent you back to your house to obsess over whether or not he was serious or just trying to get you off his back.
The cherry on the sundae was the incident on Friday when someone accidentally dug in the wrong spot and severed your internet cable, completely derailing the latest project you had been tasked with at work. Joel had anticipated your anger before you stormed out of the house, screen door smacking loudly against the siding as you stomped down the old wood stairs of your porch, making a beeline right for Joel next door.
"Tell me it wasn't your guys who did that."
He sighed before slowly turning around to face you. He looked tired, no doubt drained from the long, hot week, but he still managed to brighten up a little when he laid eyes on you.
"Sorry, darlin'. They're comin' to fix it."
"When?" you snapped. Joel narrowed his eyes as if to silently warn you about your tone. Who the hell does he think he is?
"An hour," he said flatly.
"An hour?" you exclaimed, clearly devastated.
"Yeah. An hour. Ain't you got a lunch break or somethin' you can take til it's fixed?"
You snorted and tossed your hair over your shoulder. "I haven't taken a lunch break that didn't involve a client in more than five years."
"Well, today's the day you break that streak," he told you before turning back to the hole in the ground. "Damn inspector didn't flag the property right. Ain't our fault, it's the town's."
You bury your face in your hands with a groan. "I can't believe this," you mutter to yourself.
"If it helps, I ain't happy 'bout it either," Joel says, crouching down to inspect the spot closer. "This just set me back a couple days."
"Days?!" you exclaim, letting your hands fall back to your sides in disbelief. Joel nods, still not looking at you.
"Yeah. Gotta redo the plans now. Old plans were built 'round the cables bein' two feet westâ"
"So this insanity is going to last even longer?" you ask, cutting him off. Joel sighs and drops his head between his shoulders briefly before standing with a grunt. He's tallâhis shadow blocks the sun when he towers over you, a fact that never went unnoticed.
"What's the matter, sweetheart? Thought you'd be happy to know you ain't gettin' rid of me just yet." The smirk he gives you is devastating. Your gaze falls to his throat, where beads of sweat have been trickling down and soaking his collar. It's not fair this man is so fucking handsome yet so irritating.
"I'll survive," you mutter, crossing your arms tightly and looking away to clear your head.
"Yeah? Who you gonna yell at when I'm gone, hm?"
"Believe it or not, I'm actually not a yeller," you shoot back with a glare. "Guess you just bring it out of me."
His gaze darkened for a moment like he was considering how to reply. You could almost see the silent back and forth behind his eyes, the words locked and loaded on the tip of his tongue but a small sliver of logic fought to hold onto them and pull them back down.
He says it anyway.
"That right?" His voice dips lower than you've heard it before, but not out of anger. Something else. Something far more heated and dangerous. "Wonder what else I could bring outta you."
The implication falls between you like an anvil. The weight of it keeps you both still, oblivious to what's going on around you entirely. Somehow, you manage to hold his gaze, but you're swallowing hard and breathing even harder and he can see it. He tracks the movement with those dark eyes, waiting for you to come up with a retort or storm off.
Normally, you'd do the latter, but today, you're fired up. It's always Joel who gets the last flirty word in. It's always Joel who leaves you spinning while he happily carries on with his day. So this time, you close the distance between you and crane your neck up. He doesn't break eye contact but you can tell he didn't expect this. He didn't expect you to get inches away and hold the silence like a knife to his throat. His lip curls into a smile, breathlessly anticipating some flustered, snappy comeback paired with an angry look. Instead, what you say shocks him.
"You couldn't handle it, Miller."
The confidence in your voice is what makes him falter. You clock it and grin, very satisfied with yourself, before turning and heading back to your house. The world begins to wake up around him again. Sounds begin to crescendo slowly in the air: power tools, his crew's voices, cars rumbling down the street. But his eyes are fixed on you. On the way you carry yourself back up your porch and into your house without the courtesy of a single glance back.
When your screen door snaps shut, he blinks. Clears his throat. Then forces his feet to move.
After that, Joel spends the rest of the afternoon praying he doesn't get distracted enough to lose a finger.

The weekend is thankfully quiet, but long. You pace around trying to keep busy, but you miss it. You hate it, but you miss peeking out your window to see what Joel is up to. You miss whatever has been brewing between you over the last two weeks. You miss the excitement and electricity that crackles between you when you stomp over there for one reason or another.
By Sunday night, you decide it isn't healthy to be so fixated on this. You're not even sure what's gotten into you. Usually, your life is mundane and quiet, yet this man has burrowed his way in and found a piece of you to bring to life you didn't know existed.
He pisses you off, you remind yourself. It's not good. He's not good. Let this go, the sooner the better.
So on Monday, you force yourself to stay in your house all day. It's hard, but you know it's the right thing to do. You need to focus on work and Joel is just a distraction. A big, annoying, sexy distraction.
On Tuesday, you do the same thing. It's a littler easier this time. You get a decent amount of work done with your earbuds solidly in place. You only look up from your computer to check your window a handful of times. Once or twice you swear you catch Joel glancing expectantly towards your house, but you push down the butterflies in your belly and focus back on the project in front of you.
Wednesday is more difficult because on that day, there's a legitimate reason to be annoyed. Joel's crew is using a portion of your lawn to toss old pieces of wood from the porch next door. When you first notice, you find yourself rising to your feet, propelled by anger. But then you catch yourself and slowly sit back down.
It's fine. They'll clean it up. Don't worry about it.
You finish your workday without stepping foot outside, although you had to close your curtains so you'd stop looking at the mess.
Thursday is loud. Drills pierce the air earlier than usual. You assume it has to do with the rain clouds forming on the horizon, but it still grates your every nerve to hear metal grinding into solid wood first thing in the morning. You pop your earbuds in and turn the volume up. It works, until the rain starts. The water streaking suddenly down your windowpane catches your attention, so you pull your earbuds out and look up.
Across your driveway, Joel's crew is packing up early. They're running, getting absolutely soaked in the rain while trying to get everything valuable back into their trucks as quickly as possible.
Good, you think. Peace and quiet a little earlier today.
Then you see him. Joel. With his dark curls plastered against his forehead and his white shirt sticking to his torso like he had just jumped into a pool. Your brain buffers and your lips part at the sight. You could tell before he's strong, but now his shirt is leaving very little to the imagination.
"Shit," you whisper as you watch, unblinking, while Joel packs up his truck and then turns to help his crew. His muscles flex under his rain soaked skin, water drips furiously down the sides of his head, and you forget how to breathe.
Fuck him for being so irritating and goddamn good looking at the same time.
The image is seared into your brain for the rest of the night. It has you tossing and turning in bed until you can't stand it anymore and you give in, sliding one hand down the front of your shorts in search of relief. It's fleeting and not as good as you hoped, but at least you're able to fall asleep.
Friday is when everything comes to a head.
You're tired from a restless nights sleep and on your third cup of coffee when you notice the end of your driveway is blocked. Your jaw clenches as you push a curtain aside to get a better view and of course, it's Joel's truck.
"Son of a bitch," you mutter, narrowing your eyes like you could destroy the car with your mind if you tried hard enough.
It's fine. He'll move it. He's probably waiting on some delivery, like last time.
But this time, his truck remains parked haphazardly at the end of your driveway all day. When you manage to spot him working next door, he's all smiles, completely unbothered. At last around three you see him walk to his truck, but it's just to get something from the console. The way he strolls back to his crew like he had every right in the world to encroach on your property makes your blood boil.
That's it. You've had enough. You've kept to yourself all week long, it's almost the weekend, you did pretty good. And this isn't unreasonable. He's in your fucking driveway! He's had multiple chances to move and he didn't!
Before you could stop yourself, you reach forward, lift open your window, and lean out.
"Joel Miller!"
He stops dead in his tracks, along with half his crew, to track your voice from your office window. When he spots you, he lifts his hand to his eyes to shield himself from the sun and he grins.
"Yeah?"
"Move your goddamn truck out of my driveway or else I'm havin' it towed!"
His crew chuckles and goes back to wrapping things up for the day. Joel tilts his head at you like he's amused.
"Thought you moved," he says, "haven't heard that smart mouth all week."
"Unfortunately for me, I'm still here," you snap, "now move that hunk of junk right now!"
"She ain't no hunk of junk," Joel says with mock offense. "She's the only lady in my life that never let me down, don't talk 'bout her like that."
"Stop talking about your car like it's a woman, that's gross."
Joel whistles low and comes closer so he doesn't have to shout. "Jealous?"
"Of a car? Give me a break," you snort.
He tsks and inches closer. By now, he's halfway across your driveway. "Why don't you try askin' me real nice, then maybe I'll move it."
"Why don't you get a little closer and I'll make you do it."
The deep groan that rumbled from his chest made your thighs clench.
"Don't tease a fella now," he warns with a playful look, "'cause if you talk like that I'm gonna make you follow through."
You roll your eyes, grateful you have an entire wall between you to hide the way you're practically squirming in place.
"Will you please shut up and move the truck?"
"Don't love the shut up part, but y'did say please, so I will."
"Thank you," you reply, overly sweet with a fake smile. Still, Joel stifles a laugh, entirely enthralled with how riled up he manages to make you.
"No problem. I'll be done in an hour, then I'll get outta your hair."
The smile falls from your face to be replaced with a scowl. "An hour?"
"Yeah. An hour," he confirms, turning back to his job site. "Don't worry. Won't get in the way of your Friday night plans."
"Joelâ"
"It'll be longer if you keep flirtin' with me," he says loudly over his shoulder so his entire crew can hear. Your cheeks instantly heat up but you slam your window shut before you can give him the satisfaction of witnessing your embarrassment.
You sit back down and try to focus on work, but it's impossible. Why does this man get under your skin so easily? And why do you find him so irresistible at the same time? It must be because it's been a while since the last time you've been with someone. You've been so focused on work the last several months, you can't even remember the last time you went on a date, let alone took a man home.
Your gaze drifts up against your will. Most of Joel's crew has cleared out next door. There's two guys left plus Joel, cleaning up the rest of the lawn before the weekend. You can see the relaxed smiles on their faces as they chat, probably discussing weekend plans. It makes you wonder what Joel does on the weekends. You have a feeling he's single based on his earlier comment about his truck. So what does a single man do with their spare time?
Probably pick up girls. The thought makes your stomach twist into a knot. You shake your head and focus back on your computer. That's none of your business. Who cares if he's getting laid? It doesn't matter.
Your lips press together when your eyes lift to find Joel through the window again, but now you realize the yard is empty. The remaining trucks are gone. The supplies are picked up. It's quiet.
For some reason, you're relieved when you stand and hurry to your window to find Joel's truck still idle in your driveway. You stand there staring at it while you weigh your options in your head.
It's a bad idea, you think. Joel isn't good for you. He drives you crazy. Yet you have to admit, you can't remember the last time you've felt such a spark with someone before. He's certainly not boring, you'll give him that. And he's funny, in his own way. Would it really be so bad?
Fuck it. You rush to your bedroom to change your shirt for a simple light dress and freshen up as fast as you can, all the while straining to hear for the telltale sound of his motor turning over, then you slow down.
You decide to leave it up to fate. If he's still there by the time you're ready, then you'll go for it. If he's gone, then he's gone, no big deal.
After tapping on some subtle, fruity flavored lip balm and spritzing just a tiny bit of perfume in your hair, you step out of your bedroom, mustering up as much confidence as possible as you walk to your front door. You decide not to practice what to say, that you'll just let it happen organically if it feels right. But when you swing your door open only to be met face to face with Joel, who has one fist raised in the air as if he were about to knock, all that confidence goes straight out the window.
Shit.
"Hey," he says with a crooked grin. His arm lowers to his side and your heart kicks in your chest when you notice his eyes sweep up and down your body before meeting your gaze.
"What can I do for you?" you ask, leaning against the doorframe with a small smile. His grin widens and you feel like you've stepped into yet another trap.
"That's a loaded question, sweetheart," he says, voice low. You suppress a shudder. "Wanted to tell you I'm headin' out. Looks like I got good timin', too." He gestures to your appearance and you look down.
"I'm not going anywhere."
He quirks up an eyebrow. "You got someone comin' over?"
You shake your head and try to bite back the smile that threatens to stretch across your face.
Joel makes a soft noise and casually lifts his arm to rest against the frame, right above your head. He's towering over you like this and you think it's on purpose.
"Just gettin' all dolled up to sit home alone?" he asks. You shrug and cross your arms, hoping your breasts lift when you do. His gaze flickers down quickly, confirming you're successful.
"You think this is dolled up?"
Slowly, he lets himself take in your appearance again, this time making sure you saw.
"Just used to seein' you in shorts or that little robe of yours."
"You don't like my shorts or robe?"
"Never said that."
You have to stifle a laugh and his eyes practically glitter with amusement.
"Do you have any big plans this weekend?" you ask, hoping to come across casual.
"Nothin' too crazy," he tells you, leaning in a little further. "Watch the game. Mow the lawn. Come up with new ways to get you yellin' at me."
You laugh and shake your head. "You've been doing a great job so far."
"Not so sure 'bout that," he says, swiping his palm over his chin. "Been tryin' all week. Didn't get your attention til I parked in your driveway."
The expression on your face instantly melts into one of annoyance. "You did all of that on purpose?"
His enjoyment couldn't be contained. With a huge grin, he replies, "Yes, ma'am."
"The mess on my lawn? The extra early noise?" You could feel your anger rising, flooding your chest with heat.
"That's right," Joel replies. "Parkin' in your driveway was a last resort."
Your jaw tenses as you stare him down in disbelief. "What is your goddamn problem?" you seethe. Your earlier plans to ask if he wanted to come in for a drink vanish. Screw this guy.
"Thought you were dead or somethin'. Consider it my version of a wellness check."
"I don't need you to do a wellness check on me!" you yell, throwing your hands in the air to stop yourself from pushing him. "I've put in the shittiest work this week because of you! Why are you hellbent on bothering me so much?"
"'Cause it's fun and you're cute when you're all pissed off."
"I'm cuâ"
The words die in your throat as your brain formally processes what he just said. You're still angry and red in the face, your chest is still heaving from adrenaline, and yet you're frozen solid, blinking up at him like an idiot. A slow smile spreads across his face, revealing that dreadfully adorable dimple.
"Probably the only woman on earth who looks prettier when she's readin' me the riot act," he adds just to watch your mouth open and shut like a fish.
"Youâ"
You're at a loss for words. The emotional whiplash has you reeling. He's into you, but he's showing it like an elementary school boy. It's kind of endearing but mostly immature, so you stand your ground.
"How old are you? Because you act like you're no older than twelve."
"I'm definitely older than twelve," he chuckles without missing a beat. "But listen... I really am sorry if your work suffered 'cause of me. Lemme make it up to you."
"How could you possiblyâ"
"Lemme take you out to dinner tonight."
The floor practically gives out from under you. What the hell is going on? The last ten minutes has your brain scrambling and your heart racing faster than any workout. How does this man manage to drive you to the brink of insanity only to pull you back at the last second with something sweet?
"You can yell at me the whole time, if you want," he says once too much time has passed without an answer. If you could see through your rage, you'd be able to pick up on his nervousness: his hand flexes at his side and his weight shifts from foot to foot with anxious energy.
"How about I just yell at you right here?" you snap. Joel laughs.
"If that's what you want, darlin', then sure."
Frustration bubbles up with a growl. You push away from the door to pace up and down your small hallway, raking your fingers through your hair while you attempt to calm down. All the while, Joel remains where he is, planted just outside your door, watching you spiral.
"You seem tense."
"I am tense! Because of you!"
"I can help with that."
You freeze and stare at him, long and hard. All those thoughts you've had about him, those images of him working in the rain, his way of turning a phrase to just barely imply he could ruin you... all of those moments crash down over you like a tidal wave and you decide that maybe he could help, after all.
In the blink of an eye, you close the distance keeping you apart. Your hand fists his sweaty, dirty shirt and you yank him forward. He stumbles a few feet into your house with surprised huff. You see the way his eyes widen right before your mouth crashes over his and finally, for a few blissful minutes, you get your coveted silence.
Joel only needs a moment before he catches up. His lips soften against yours as you pull him deeper into your house. He kicks back one foot and it collides with your door, slamming it closed behind him, then his hands are on you, pushing you gently against the wall so he can take control.
His teeth greedily graze your lower lip and your mouth parts for him with a soft moan. Driven by the sound, his tongue eagerly slips past your lips and his hands drop to cup the backs of your thighs. He hauls you up and your legs circle his waist while your tongues tangle together, hot and angry. It's desperate and messy and exactly what you need. The broad heft of his body pressed up against yours, the heady scent of the outdoors and sweat and him invading your senses, the faint taste of coffee on his tongue... it's utterly perfect.
"Where'd this come from, hm?" he asks, voice low and rough as his lips skim the edge of your jaw. Your head tilts back and your eyelids remain closed, offering your throat up to him without a fight.
"You said you could help," you murmur, craning your neck to give him better access. He finds a spot below your ear and sucks, leaving the beginnings of a mark that will take days to disappear.
"I did," he mumbles against your skin. "Meant a drink or somethin', but I ain't complainin'."
Your chin drops, hunting for his mouth, but then his hand is there tipping your head back, cupping your cheek with his thumb pressed on the underside of your jaw.
"Ain't done," he grumbles before continuing his assault on your throat. You pull your bottom lip between your teeth and let him move your head this way and that, enjoying the way he's taken control. You get the sense he's wanted this as badly as you because he seems determined to taste every inch of your skin. When his mouth travels lower to ghost over your shoulder, you shrug, allowing the strap of your dress to fall and expose more skin. Joel makes a pleased grunt before his lips explore the newly revealed territory.
"Christ, you're soft." It almost sounds like he's talking to himself, the way his voice is full of quiet wonder. A shiver rolls down your spine and you tug impatiently at his hair.
"Joel," you whine, but your thought is cut off with a gasp when he presses himself firmly against the cradle of your hips. You can feel him there, hot and hard behind his zipper. One of your hands drops to his belt and you slip your fingers past his waistband, but just as you're about to reach your target, his body jolts and he swats your hand away with a chuckle.
"Eager thing," he grins before sealing his lips over yours again.
"Bedroom," you manage to mumble when he takes half a second to breathe. "Behind you."
"Bossy," he scolds. His mouth covers yours with a deep groan before he tightens his grip around your legs. He pulls you from the wall and swings around to carry you in the general direction of your bedroom, all while never breaking the kiss.
It's kind of comical the way you stumble into your room. The door swings open too fast and knocks back against Joel's shoulder but it doesn't slow him down. He refuses to pull away to look where he's going, but when his boot collides with a half empty laundry basket on the floor, he curses under his breath and finally tears himself away.
You take the opportunity to squirm out of his grip. When your feet hit the floor, you instantly rise to your tiptoes, lips seeking out the warm skin of his throat. You moan a little when your tongue drags over his pebbled skin, tasting salt and sun that remains there. It's addicting to taste the product of his day's hard work, so you do it again and relish in the way he shudders from your attention.
"Shoulda just told me from the start what you wanted." His fingers fumble with his belt buckle after he hears the quiet sound of your zipper coming undone. "Would've saved us both alotta time, darlin'."
"Shut up," you grumble before your teeth pinch a spot next to his Adam's apple. Your dress falls into a pool at your feet, hands free to help him lift his shirt over his head.
"I need a shower," Joel says after his shirt is discarded. You just shake your head and press your mouth over his collarbone, then his sternum, mapping his body while he works on kicking off his boots and jeans.
"I like you like this," you whisper. He smirks, stepping out of his clothes as best he can with your mostly naked body pressed against his own. "You smell good," you add after a minute, and he seems pleased with that.
"Get on the bed, sweetheart. Lemme see you."
You pull away from the faint red marks you left littering his chest and look up at him through your lashes. "You first."
Joel frowns. "Whaâ"
With a grin, you give him a gentle push. His back hits the bedding and he barely has a chance to register it until you're climbing on top of him, legs bracketing his hips with a giggle. He smiles so big that his eyes squint, revealing those damn dimples again beneath his beard. Then his gaze drops to your bare breasts and his eyes darken.
"Fuck, you're pretty," he mumbles, palming them greedily. When his rough thumb grazes your nipple, you lunge down and capture his mouth with a searing kiss.
"You want me like this?" he asks, words tumbling against your swollen lips. "Wanna ride me, baby?"
"Yes," you whine while tugging down his boxers with one hand. His palms glide over your thighs, squeezing and pulling you back and forth so your hips begin to grind down on his lap.
"Take these off 'fore I ruin 'em," he warns you, fingers hooking into the band of your panties. You suppress the shiver of arousal at his tone before you do exactly as he says.
When your bare cunt comes in contact with the underside of his cock, you suck in a deep breath. He's so hot and throbbing against your soaked folds, making every slide of your hips steal your breath away.
Joel watches you move with heavy lidded eyes, seemingly just as lost in the feeling as you. His chest rises and falls a little faster when the tip of his cock presses against your clit and your whole body shudders with a moan he will end up dreaming about for weeks.
Reality hits when a streak of his arousal leaks and smears across your skin, bringing him back down to earth for one second.
"Wait, my walletâ"
He extends one hand towards the floor and your eyes follow, connecting the dots and sliding off him to grab his pants. You find it tucked into his back pocket and toss it his way. He catches it and fishes out a little foil packet from its depths while you resume your spot in his lap, lips parted and heart racing with anticipation as he rolls the condom on with care.
"Alright honey, I'm all yours," he announces, smirking as he folds his arms behind his head. You roll your eyes but still shimmy forward and raise your hips, using one hand against his chest to prop yourself up and the other to guide him to your entrance. The moment you sink down, however, his lips melt into a soft circle and his eyelids flutter shut, filling your chest with pride before caving into the pleasure yourself.
You sigh and tilt your head back when you finally take all of him. The stretch is exquisite, or maybe it's just been a while, but it doesn't matter. All the static that's been electrifying your brain lately, all that stress from work, from pushing yourself too far every single day dissolves away.
"Oh, shit," he whispers, voice cracking. His fingers dig into the meat of your hips. "Feel so goddamn good."
You drop your head forward to look at him, chest and neck all flushed underneath you. Your eyes trace his body as you begin to move, just slow rolls of your hips while you take in every detail: strong arms built from work, not weights. Skin slightly sweaty and a shade lighter where his shirts protect him from the sun. Broad shoulders and a firm stomach, but not too lean. One of your hands drifts over the planes of his chest and the curves of his muscles, humming with admiration as you continue to slowly ride him. His eyes light up and you swear you can see the pleasure in his expression when he clocks your appreciation for him.
"Make yourself feel good, honey," he says, voice low. Your gaze flickers up to his and you share a smile. "Wanna see what you like. Wanna watch you fall apart on it."
Your hips lift and drop a little faster, skin slapping against skin. "Should've known you never stop talking, even when you're getting laid," you tease, and Joel chuckles.
"Bark and bite, I like that."
"Yeah, I figured that out." You gasp when he thrusts upwards, hitting a spot deep inside you can't reach on your own. He notices and files it away for later.
"Takin' notes on me?" he asks, ghosting his palms over your ribs before landing on your breasts, watching in a daze while they bounce in his hands.
"You wish," you pant. He tsks, eyes still fixed on your chest.
"I got a few things figured out 'bout you, too."
You stop moving to glare down at him and catch your breath. His dark eyes dance with amusement at your annoyed look.
"Like what?"
He shrugs but the smile still tugs at the corners of his mouth. "You work hard but don't ever blow off any steam. Don't know yet if it's cause you're too tired or you feel like you don't deserve it."
That stuns you. Even though you're naked and he's currently buried inside you, you suddenly feel very exposed. He sees he might have overstepped, so he backtracks with a joke.
"You can call me anytime and I'll be happy to help you unwind."
You snort and begin moving again, shaking off the unexpected flash of vulnerability. "Why don't you focus on making this memorable enough for me to call you again?"
Joel laughed then, loud. And despite yourself, you giggle.
"Baby, when you're done playin' cowgirl, I'm gonna flip you over and fuck you so hard, you'll feel it on Monday when you're watchin' me through that office window of yours."
Your pussy clenches involuntarily and you begin working faster, fucking yourself on his lap now like you mean it.
"That's a-a lot of big talk, Miller," you reply, breathless from the exertion. You circle your hips and moan loudly when you find an angle you like.
"Ain't just talk," he says, big hands back on your hips, helping you move. His gaze is fixed on where you're connected, on the slick smearing between your bodies, and his stomach tightens. "Been thinkin' 'bout fuckin' you every which way to Sunday, got a head full'a ideas."
"You've been thinking about fucking me?" you repeat almost shyly.
"Don't be coy, now," he tells you, grunting softly when you plant both hands on his chest for leverage. "You know you came over there that first day with these perfect fucking tits pokin' through that little robe on purpose."
"Did not," you breathe, but all the fight has left your body. You're getting close and it's all you can focus on now.
"Uh-huh," Joel says, clearly not believing you. He swallows hard and his cock twitches impatiently inside you. He could come like this, with you riding him, getting yourself off, but he doesn't want to. He doesn't want it to be over just yet, especially if you expect this to be a one time thing.
Shit, he hopes it's not just a one time thing.
"C'mon, baby, let go," he says before mouthing at your breasts. His tongue glides over one nipple then grazes it with his teeth before moving to the other one. You jolt and whine and push your chest even closer to his face.
"Joel..." you whisper. Your muscles are tired, you're slowing down. Sweat dots your forehead, collects behind your knees, and you're gasping for air.
He sits up suddenly, understanding right away what you need, and wraps one arm around your waist while the other braces himself against the mattress. He's able to fuck up into you like this and instantly your legs relax and your body slumps forward, causing him to relinquish the attention to your chest.
"That's it," he coos, "lemme help you."
You rarely accept help. The thought flickers across your mind for a moment before you push it away. This is different. This is just sex.
"M'close," you mumble shakily, fingers digging into the thick muscle of his shoulders, forehead pressed intimately against his.
"I know," he breathes, "give it to me, darlin'."
A few more harsh snaps of his hips has you falling, whimpering his name as white hot heat rolls through your limbs and soaking your brain with a drunken haze. He's murmuring to you the whole time: how tight you feel, how beautiful you look, what a good job you did, how perfectly you fit on his cock. The praise goes straight to your head and fills a much needed void somewhere inside you. Some piece of you that is always pushing you to do more, try harder, work faster... efforts that rarely give you desired results. Or, at least, the results you're after. But thisâthis manâhe's giving you something you desperately crave without even realizing it.
Your breath stutters like you've been knocked off kilter, and maybe you have. Joel thinks it's an aftershock of your orgasm and doesn't think anything of it.
He lifts you off his lap and you gasp, eyes flying open in shock. You have about half a second before you're tossed face down onto the bed next to him, then he's climbing behind you, rough hands gentle on your hips as they pull you back up to your hands and knees.
"That's it," he grunts when you obediently spread your legs and arch your back. He smirks to himself before pushing back inside you with a heavy sigh. "Goddamn, you're warm," he says after sliding slowly all the way in, giving you a chance to adjust to the new position. You bite your lip and breathe through it, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of knowing just how deep he feels like this. How good he feels.
"Fuck me, Joel," you moan, pushing your ass back, encouraging him to move. He rolls his hips forward, slow and deep.
"I know," he pants, "I know what you need."
He moves a little faster. Your ass bounces with every push. He grabs it with one big hand and squeezes before giving you a playful smack and doing it again.
"No, you don't. You barelyâbarely know me," you remind him. Your words stumble over each other as you feel yourself losing focus again. He feels so good, it's impossible not to.
"Know you better than you think," he shoots back. He smoothes over the spot on your ass he had spanked, soothing the area before sliding his palm up and over your spine. He can feel every knot and twist, every stress point you keep locked away deep inside. His fingers seek them out with ease, like maybe he really can see more than you think.
Still, you're stubborn.
"You only know what I want you to know." Your jaw is clenched, the words escape through your teeth but your point is made. You swallow down a moan and close your eyes, giving in to the way he expertly takes you apart.
"I knew you needed this from the first time we met," he tells you, "could've fucked this out of you back then and saved us both the trouble."
"You like it," you hiss over your shoulder. His pace is relentless now, hips swinging roughly against your ass, burying his thick cock as deep as it'll go. He wants to split you open and make you scream his name. He wants your mind blank and your body satiated. "You likeâohh... f-fuckâ"
"What's that?" he goads. Joel drops forward so both his arms bracket yours. His chest presses against your spine and his breath is hot in your ear. You shiver and your jaw falls open.
"You..." Your throat is dry. Heat is building behind your navel and your legs are starting to shake. You swallow and keep talking. "You like trouble. You like it... when I yell at you. Wheâwhen Iâ"
"Yeah, I know," he admits, "somethin' real sexy 'bout you when you get all pissed off."
"âLike when I tell you... tell you what to do."
He's silent for a moment but his pace never falters. The wet sound of skin on skin is deafening, addicting. Your face warms as he punches the air from your lungs with every devastating thrust.
"Yeah. Maybe I do."
You hum and breathe deep through your nose. Fuck, he's right. You're going to be sore. You can already feel it.
"So tell me what to do now," he adds. It takes you a second to process it, but when you do, you force your eyes open.
What does he want to hear?
Don't overthink it.
"Touch me," you demand, firm and clear despite how your heart is racing.
Joel doesn't hesitate.
He leans back, leaving your sweaty back exposed to the cool air, and he reaches around to play with your clit. Instantly, you gasp and buck under him.
"Like that?"
If you had any clarity at all you would have shot him back some sarcastic remark because of course the answer is yes. Your entire body is shaking, you can barely speak and he knows it.
"Mhm," you manage, "yeâyeah, just like that. Fuck, keep goingâ"
"Jesus Christ," he mutters when your body begins to work in tandem with his, meeting him thrust for thrust. "Shit honey, you're gonna make me come like this."
You whine and throw your head back. His fingers don't stop circling your clit. Sweat coats your skin now. Gasping breaths and the sound of his hips meeting your ass over and over are filling the room, punctuated by Joel's deep grunts and your breathy moans.
"Joelâ" you whisper as your body locks up. Your muscles ache, your cunt aches even more, but you continue to take it all. Your hand feverishly finds his between your legs and you leave it there, loving the way his fingers feel while they play you like a guitar.
"Sweetheart, I'm gonnaâ"
But you cut him off before he could finish his thought with a sharp cry. Your orgasm washes over you, harsh and unforgiving. A moment later Joel follows you over the edge with a loud curse, then a rough, deep grunt you can feel in your bones as he empties himself into the condom.
"Oh, holy fuck," he gasps, removing his hand from between your legs. He still thrusts weakly into you as the last of his orgasm streaks through his veins. It's cut short when he feels your body shaking violently under him and just like that, his focus is back on you.
"You okay?"
"I'mâ" You're out of breath. Your vision is spotty and your muscles are weak. You swallow hard and try again. "I'm good, just need toâ"
You fall onto your elbows and Joel takes the hint. He eases out of you, ignoring the way his chest pangs at the loss of your body, before he collapses into bed and hauls you down next to him.
Now you can rest. You close your eyes and breathe, deep and heavy. He does the same while the sweat cools on both your bodies and slowly, your brain begins to come back online. When it does, you realize his body is loosely curled around yours, keeping you warm and grounding you. It's strangely intimate but you don't pull away. Not yet.
"How 'bout I take you for that dinner now?" he mumbles before carefully pressing a soft kiss against your neck. His sweaty chest is pressed against your back, sealing you together.
"Let's just order something instead," you sigh with your eyes closed.
"Did I tire you out, darlin'?"
"Didn't sleep well," you say, unwilling to give him any credit just yet, "the damn construction crew next door woke me up way too early."
"Uh-huh," he teases before tightening his arm around your middle. It feels nice, so you lean into him just a bit. And for a while it's quiet and peaceful. Your breath steadies, your head clears, but your muscles stay soft and relaxed. Joel doesn't say anything. His thumb rubs idly over your stomach, lips occasionally graze over your back or shoulder, and it feels good until that defensive part of your brain wakes up, right on schedule.
This isn't serious. This didn't mean anything. It was just stress relief. Don't get attached.
"So," you say, voice a little hoarse when you gently slip out of his grip. He rolls onto his back with a soft, reluctant noise and he watches you stand to pick up your clothes. "This is what it takes to finally shut you up, huh?"
You grin at your joke as you press your clothes to your front, hiding your bare body from him like he hadn't just touched every inch of it minutes ago. When he doesn't answer right away with some smart remark, you pause and meet his eye.
He's stretched out on your bed, looking at you like he's seeing something not meant for him. You swallow nervously and try not to let yourself enjoy how good he looks in your space, amongst your things, in your life.
"Yeah," he finally says, "guess that'll do it."
His voice sounds flat and you begin to feel bad, so you clear your throat and inch towards your bathroom. "Let's order something to eat before you go."
Before you go. Joel heard it and got the message. He didn't know what to expect but for some reason, it stings.
"Yeah, what are you thinkin'?" He sits up and reaches for his jeans, where his phone is still tucked into his pocket.
"I don't care. Whatever you like." Then the door to the bathroom quietly snaps shut. Joel sighs once's he's alone and rubs his face before looking around your room. It's neat and organized, nothing like his own. He chews the inside of his cheek while he thinks, but before he lets himself get too lost, he snaps out of it and looks at his phone.
Chinese is a safe bet, so he orders that before standing to rid himself of the condom and get dressed. Suddenly he feels out of place. He's rough and dirty and you're... not. And that's fine. This was fun, it doesn't have to be anything more. Yet when he wanders into your kitchen for water, he can't help but feel an empty pull in his chest at the thought of leaving.
Unknown to him, hidden inside your bathroom, you're struggling with the very same thing.
âThe article said Strane groomed the girls. Groomed. I repeat the word over and over, try to understand what it means, but all I can think about is the lovely warm feeling Iâd get when he stroked my hair.â
summary: Youâve been scared of intimacy since you can remember. So, what happens when Joel â your fatherâs best friend, and the only reliable parental figure youâve had in your life â catches you in a rather compromising position on halloween? You donât know how to feel now that Joel has actually caved.
Now that heâs allowed himself to feed on your desires.
Or, rather, what you thought you desired.
You felt grown when you were pursuing Joel. A dirty albeit grown, adult girl.
But now? You felt anything but that.
Joel.
Joel dadâs-best-friend-Joel. Uncle Joel. Your old man, Joel. Your dadâs buddy, Joel â beer buddy Joel. Joel, Joel, Joel.
Fuck. Joel? Really?
It started with a look.
A volatile little smile on your birthday â your pink frilled cake, sticky vanilla frosting, and eighteen teensy candles glaring. Holding eye contact with him for far too long to be considered friendly; hoping heâd catch your gaze to see what was written all over your face.
âIâm legal, Joel.â
Joel was never stupid.
In fact, he was always too observant for your liking. Catching you guilty-as-charged on your porch and knowing you just smoked your first joint. Or finding you drinking his beer at an ungodly hour and somehow placing it immediately to your impending graduation. Your least favorite: your red eyes, and Joelâs hug following suit â you and your dad were fighting, Joel figured.
He knew you were a good girl.
Really, Joel knew the purity of your nature better than youâd observed yourself.
Your peeking lace, flirty little smiles and that awful pout you developed after your first semester at college never fooled him. Nope, not one bit.
Joel knew you were a virgin.
You were a nervous thing.
Always have been, always will be.
Itâs in your nature, heâs decided. Itâs your biological coding. Knew it since you were just a girl.
You were the same with boys your age; hiding at the adult table instead of mingling and doing who-knowâs-what with boys like the âFelderâsâ eldest son or worse, that punk Scott. Not that he thought of you in that way yet, but it was just something he observed. Your meekness. Your quiet demeanor. The way you were totally uninterested in boys in such a way that your own mother began to worry.
âYou know, at her age? I was onto my seventh boyfriend. Seventh! These kids are living in a different age, I suppose.â
So imagine Joelâs surprise pulling up to the bar that night to see sweet thing you: pressed against a brick wall, leg wrapped around some loser with your hand tangled in his hair?
Maybe it was his fault to blame.
Snooping where he didnât belong.
He knew you would be here. In fact, he had, yes, admittedly followed you to the very bar youâre stood outside of.
But could you blame him?
Youâre his responsibility.
Your fatherâs only daughter, his best buddyâs only child, now under his care while you were home for the holidays.
It doesnât matter how old you are.
That youâre âan adultâ, as you keep reminding him, or that you âknow what you want.â
You arenât old enough to know any better, heâs surmised, but Joel does â for you.
Joel is sure you must have been as equally disturbed upon seeing him. If not more.
He isnât subtle about it. He doesnât wait for you to finish whatever the hell you were trying to start.
He simply slams his truck door shut â half surprised the red herring of his faulty engine hadnât sent you running, knowing you could tell when Joel was over just from the sound of it creaking into your drive away. But, alas, youâre occupied. He marches as silent as the still air outside toward the outline of your silhouette, where youâre shielded by thisâŠ. stranger, this random boy, thisâ
Joel fishes in his pocket and shines his flashlight on the both of you.
Youâre the first to pull away.
You jolt as you snap your head up toward Joel with wide-eyes, your doe eyes illuminated in the white harsh exposition of his flashlight.
âFuckinâ hell.â
This was a scene that could kill a man.
You â good grades you, star pupil you, sorority chair member and babysitter you â barely dressed in your white babydoll and fucking bunny ears.
And how ironic is it that you, caught in a disgusting act, gawk at him with faux innocence; donned in lacey white to match the part. And he wouldâve sought you fit for it too, if not for your swollen lips and the smudge of lipstick on your chin. Not to mention the random boy currently swearing at your side.
âGet your ass inside. And donât make me repeat myself. You hear me?â you hesitate for a moment â still wide-eyed and still frozen under the horrible blaring glare of his hand held torch. Youâve never felt so dirty and vulnerable in your entire life.
Joel growls a deep exhale and shines the light closer toward your face, blinding you and causing you to stumble back against the cold wall behind you.
âYou fuckinâ hear me? Scram, kid. Inside. Now.â And you know he isnât playing any games when he begins to count.
âOneâŠ.twoâŠâ you run into the bar with your hand hovering behind your ass as though you were some child nervously escaping a spanking. You would laugh at yourself if you werenât so frozen in an all consumable humiliation.
Joel has half the mind to slap the kid that was just eating your face off but he regresses. He knows it wasnât the boys fault; if anything, it was more likely yours.
While he held your good girl disposition near and dear to his heart, he had noticed your recent rebelling streak.
It was unnatural and awkward.
Coming in the form of wearing dresses so short that you couldnât even jump out his truck without flashing him; copious frills of red or pink or his personal hell, white, and he couldnât stand it.
He wondered if college had taken the dear girl he watched you grow into only to snatch you away and morph you into a lady.
A femme fatale. Seductress. Promiscuous like your sorority sisters.
But, no â you were still shy as ever at neighborhood barbecues and still ignoring Scott Felder with the same fervor you had when you were seventeen.
And so to see you like this?
He hadnât a clue what to do with you.
It couldâve been ten or twenty or even thirty minutes, you werenât sure, but finally, you hear that unmistakable noise of heavy toed boots clang against the bar floor, and there he is. Making an appearance after all.
For a moment, you were scared he had stranded you here. Or, worse, called your father.
But instead, Joel locks his sight on you and slowly approaches. It isnât hard. With your ridiculous costume ears still perched on your head. He pulls out the bar stool next to you and immediately waves down the bartender.
He keeps a tab open.
You sit in silence as he nurses his second beer, listening to the screeching noise of his obnoxiously loud sighs as youâre sat shaking on the grimy bar stool beside him.
Waiting for something. Anything.
A shake of his head. A snarl. Youâre even finding yourself pleading for his dreaded lectures.
But, alas, he only sits there. Wordless and your stomach churns in anticipation for when his fuse finally implodes.
It ignites slowly.
A small, subtle look your way.
Disappointment.
Burning hot and sparking clear as day on his face.
Then,
and you couldnât ever predict what he would say,
but he meets your eye and mumbles:
âAnd here I was, thinkinâ you were a virgin.â
You would say Joel has been a pretty consistent figure in your life.
Heâs just been there. You canât ever really remember when he came onto the scene or when you started to respect, and equally fear him, more than your own old man.
And well, you would say youâve come to know him pretty well.
You like to think you have a firm understanding of his attitude. You know what makes him temperamental, what he enjoys or doesnât, observed enough to guess what he would find humorous or instead flat out shun.
You know heâs a secret prude. Brave in a way your father never was, chastising you for skirts he deemed too short,
âtwo finger rule, sweetheart, câmon. You know this.â
Blushing when the âgrownupâ table makes a dirty joke. Usually about his lady of the month. Then lecturing you when he finds you peeping, tutting: âthis is a grownup conversation, young lady. Eyes and ears to yourself.â
You remember the first time you saw Joel in a new light: condensation dripping down large fingers. That smirk highlighted by handsome lines of age and sun that weathered his skin. Tan flesh and jeans a bit too tight to really fit him properly. That scolding look of his, always pointed your way.
But in all your years of knowing Joel, nothing could have ever prepared you for this.
Joel Miller who damn nearly had a heart attack when you brought your senior year prom date to greet your father, and Joel â of course.
You never knew him to have the gall.
The nerve.
The obscenity to call you out.
âThought you were a virgin.â
You choke on your own spit. Half-laughing-and-half-gasping as you try to squawk a retort that just gets stuck in your throat.
He takes a large gulp of his beer. You watch his adamâs apple bob around his sip, stupidly stuttering and now burning in a feverish blush.
âWhat!-what, whatâŠâ he peers at you through his peripheral. âWh-at? So, soâ so virgins arenât allowed to kiss now, is that what, huh?â
You are just so defensive. For no good reason; heâs the one who caught you in your indecent act. Though, you donât deny what heâs said either, and a tiny sick part of himself is slightly relieved â for your dignity, of course.
âI ainât ever know one to kiss like that, thatâs for fuckinâ sure.â
âO-kay, Joel. How about you try and stay out of my business, and you wonât have to know a damn thing. Does that work for you?â
Ouch. Well, look at that. Youâre embarrassed.
Good, heâs thinking. You should be. You ought to be. But thereâs something more, something slightly sinister bubbling below the surface. Youâre humiliated, maybe. Pissed at him, even. Heâs wondering why you havenât yet asked him what he was doing at some college bar, but he suspects your unease has you tattered.
âQuit beinâ ugly with me, kid. Itâs my job to be lookinâ out for you, and I wonât â while youâre under my roofââ
âIâm sorry, under whose roof?ââ
âDonât go talkinâ back to me. I wonât have you actinâ this way so long as youâre stayinâ here. You hear me?â
You canât decide whether to laugh or yell at him. âYouâre arenât my father, Joel. Itâs not your job to do anything!â
Your shame has brought your claws out; hissing and scratching and clawing deep into wounds you have no business deepening.
Thereâs a falter in the beat of the room. A stutter. A sliver of light peeking onto skeletons long hidden inside your closet.
You knew it was the wrong thing to say. It felt awkward, somewhat heavy like a lie on your tongue, and the suffocating air weighing heavy between the two of you concedeâs that he knows this too.
His face reads as surprisingly amused, and you suspect thatâs the reason why. Youâre just lashing out. Growing pains. All little girls go through this phase. Heâs been waiting for this, really.
âAlright.â He groans as he stands up. Arm raising to scratch at his greying scruff and his flannel raises slightly â tan skin exposed, happy trail peeking from above his slacks. âIâm takinâ you home. Your dad ainât back yet,â you donât miss how he lingers on that word. Dad. Spitting it at you. âAnd frankly, I donât want him seeinâ you likeâŠâ his eyes rake down your frame and you feel just as exposed as you did under the glare of his flashlight, âthis.â
He may as well have gone and called you a whore. You want to lash out and really give him something to be shocked at. Treat him like you do with dear old dad when he tests your patience and see how he likes it.
But really, youâre nervous at how Joel would retaliate. You and your father arenât afraid to yell; you know that with every argument, while a silent lull may fall for however long it takes, your relationship would eventually return to its flawed resting point.
But Joel? â he classes your low points differently. He yearns for the confrontation, because he enjoys the punishment. The lesson in it. You give him an inch? Heâll run it any which way from Tuesday just to turn it into a some sort of paternal marathon.
You would call him a sadist if it didnât mean you would have to acknowledge what that would make you.
Really, sometimes, you wonder, if it isnât the reason him and his own daughter are so distant. Or, rather the reason why she wonât speak to him. You never really saw Sarah growing up, with your age gap, but you could see how Joelâs life motivation could be his very own fatal flaw.
He constantly needs, wants, longs to teach teach teach.
He knows best.
His way is the best way.
âDonât be mad at him,â your father would tell you when Joel first started taking it upon himself to solve your tantrums himself.
âYou know how it is for him. Heâs just beinâ a dad, âs all. Saves my ass the trouble, thatâs for sure.â
You try to remind yourself of this when you and Joel make it back home. Any slight buzz you had lingering is strikingly gone â dissipated completely enough to leave you so sober youâre shaking. From the cold air, or from your repentance, you arenât sure yet.
Joel notices.
âYouâre shakinâ,â he observes, but he doesnât sound concerned. In fact, thereâs that same amused twinge from before. The lesson. He wants you like this, all to teach you.
âItâs cold.â You whine, and he sighs at your tone but with a small smirk in tow. Is it cold, or are you stood half-naked in a kitchen where you used to play with your barbies?
âCâmon.â He nods his head toward the dimly lit staircase and you follow up behind him as he begins his slow ascend, leading you down the hallway to your bedroom.
He turns on your bedside lamp and opens your drawers. Rummaging through them as you stand in the corner, still shaking, until he finds a clean pair of pajamas for you and lays them on your bed. Folding them, neatly.
âGet changed.â He mumbles.
âI need to â I need to shower, first.â You feel dirty. Youâve felt dirty since you let that boy kiss you outside that awful dive bar. You werenât even sure why you did. It wasnât you. He wasnât even your type. You werenât half as drunk as you usually get on nights out, but truthfully, it had little to do with the alcohol and more with the nagging voices of your friends and boys you wouldnât let pursue you on repeat.
Taunting you. And for what?
Grimy. Bad. Even more so, the moment Joel saw you in that state.
âThen shower.â
You hoped that the cold water and the harsh rubbing of your skin would clean you of more than just your caked-on makeup. But it doesnât. You feel just as awful as before, and Joel doesnât offer you any consolation.
Heâs as quiet as you are; silent when you meekly pass where heâs perched on the edge of your bed. You fetch the pajamas he had laid for you.
And when you remerge, creaking the door open an inch, heâs still there â waiting. Head tilting at the open door when you meet his gaze with a small smile. You continue doing whatever it is you were doing, seemingly spraying something into your hair. Citrus and brown sugar.
The smell of you. Fresh, clean, warm, sweet. He should get going now. Really, heâs probably overstayed his welcome. Your father could be back. Sat downstairs, nursing a beer. Watching television. Thinking youâre dead asleep. If he was even wondering that at all.
You watch as he lifts from your bed and gingerly wanders toward where youâre spraying all sorts of concoctions into your hair, his frame lurking behind you.
Taller. Brooding. Unsure.
Pausing in the doorway until heâs making eye contact with you in the mirror. He shakes his head, low and disappointed, and tuts at you. Slowly moving toward the other end of the sink before beckoning you over to where heâs stood with a call of his fingers.
You follow â barefoot padding across the cold tiles to reach him.
He sighs. Hums, even. Tilting his head at you and scanning his eyes down your expanse like heâs examining you. Wanting to see how sorry you are.
âYou donât have to stay here, Joel. With me. Itâs late.â The concept of someone staying up for you, up with you, is foreign. You feel awkward standing across from Joel, unsure how to handle the onslaught of attention; wearing pajamaâs he picked out for you and you hate that youâre secretly comforted by even the small semblance of tenderness it holds.
âYou seeinâ that boy?â he finally speaks, and you canât help but shyly smile and shake your head.
âNo.â Youâre grinning now. Almost giggling. Cheeky.
He wants to give your cheek a curt smack and wipe that smile off your face.
âNo?â Heâs smirking back at you.
You slowly shake your head. Heâs lulled you into thinking that you are equal. That since you are smiling, and heâs smiling, that now you two are playing. But you should know by now â Joelâs never been one to bark without a bite.
You step ever so slightly closer to him. You could blame it on shaky legs or that burning taste of tequila still lingering in your mouth, but itâs just you.
The bathroom is dimly lit, and Joelâs still smirking, and so he thinks maybe you must be feeling brave. Surely, if youâre being this brazen with him.
âI didnât even know his name.â You whisper.
Smiling, still, albeit sheepishly. Beads of water dripping down the expanse of your cheekbones and wet hair clinging to your shoulders.
Joel doesnât say anything.
His expression doesnât even flinch.
He just hooks his ankle behind your calf, causing you to stumble closer to him. You catch yourself before you can fall, making quick balance by placing your palms on his chest.
He hums â gently, and ever-so-slowly inches his startlingly large hand out toward you. You can feel him softly catch the droplets trailing their way along your jaw, grazing his knuckles down the edge of the bone.
To your confusion, the head-rush of the moment is dulled by the clanging of miscellaneous items on your counter, until you realize what heâs doing.
Heâs searching for something.
Digging through your sink caddy before pulling out your â toothbrush?
You watch as he squeezes a dime of toothpaste onto its pink bristles. His knuckles are still resting fleetingly along your cheekbones. You would convince yourself that this was your deluded imagination, if not for the jarring sensation of his hand outstretching and covering your entire jawbone in one tight clamp.
Both from the sheer force of his grip, and in a gasp of surprise, your mouth opens and youâre about to retort â
Is he really going to?â
âOpen wide.â
Your effort is useless.
He gives you no warning before almost gagging you on your own toothbrush. Shoving it uncaringly into your mouth, letting the plastic stick clang loudly against your teeth and poke at the plush flesh inside.
This is . . . humiliating?
You silently pray itâs not spit you can feel slightly dribbling onto the handle of the brush, surely going down his hand, and you whine in embarrassment â itâs muffled in the clumsy attempt of brushing your teeth â and you try to shove his hand away, but he only grips your wrist with the other; absentmindedly bracketing your hips and pressing you against the sharp porcelain digging into your behind.
He laughs at you.
âGotta get you clean,â he tuts, and you burn both with mortification and in the revelation that he must surely now see you as you do yourself.
Dirty. Ruined. Once the child, now the inevitable woman.
âJoel,â you gurgle, slightly laughing in awkwardness. The mint is causing your eyes to water as you try to shove him harder, with no avail.
âStop.â He catches your wrist once again and presses it hard against your chest. âBe good.â
Now this â this is just â
Humiliation.
Joelâs never touched you like this. Heâs never gripped at you, or ever, ever been rough with you.
Really, now that you really come to think of it, youâve never much felt the graze of Joelâs flesh against yours.
Sure, youâve felt his frame against yours in tear-soaked hugs.
Or felt the calloused graze of his knuckles when passing you the clandestine beer, or maybe felt the accidental knock of his knee brushing yours in sweaty lawn chairs at neighborhood barbecues.
But Joel has always treated you so . . . delicately.
Only touching you unless absolutely necessary. Avoiding it, even: his hand hovering above your waist in photographs, rejecting your requests of retying your bikini top, reacting as though youâve burned him in accidental moments of your body swiping past his.
Okay, now? Well this just feels oddly intimate.
You must be making it weird.
Youâve stopped thrashing and now youâre only sat complacent, blushing. At Joel. You hate the feelings you can feel begin to stir deep in your gut. Itâs hot fierce and youâre sure he can see it, or at the very least feel it in your quick pulse.
But this is already weird.
Joel is brushing your teeth.
For you.
While laughing like itâs the highest form of entertainment heâs had in all his fifty-so years of living.
And â are you shaking? Seriously? Are you that unsure on how to act in the presence of such a man acting as casual as he does during errands?
Itâs only Joel. But heâs a man, nonetheless.
You could count on your one hand the amount of times youâve ever touched one, and so, yes, youâre shaking.
Maybe itâs part adrenaline, too. Your nervous system grappling to accommodate that this is Joel. Touching you so openly, even if it is to manhandle you.
His other hand moves from its tight hold on your jaw to create a makeshift ponytail of your hair, pushing your head gently toward the sink
âSpit, honey.â
You can barely speak with both the toothpaste swishing in your mouth and between your stifled giggles, toothpaste foam clumisy escaping and now youâre laughing, fully.
âThere she is. You feelinâ better now?â
âNo! You just â you?â Youâre hysterical. He snorts at you, secretly relieved to finally see a smile appear on your face after all of your pouting. Youâre not off the hook just yet â his seething disappointment still brewing â but the melody of your laughter quells the bitterness even for a little moment. He sighs when you giggle and hide your head in the crook of his neck because this is the little girl that he fondly remembers. Maybe you just needed a reminder, too.
On his flannel collar, you can smell the lingering remainder of the cigarettes he must have snuck out on his lunch break whispering to you. It mixes with the smell of his musk. His natural scent, and a spray of that cologne you could sniff out with a blindfold. Sweet, yet notably masculine â honey melded with boozy tobacco â like that whiskey he stashes below his kitchen sink. Nostalgic in a way that reminds you of summer; Joelâs cigarettes burning the dewy grass of your lawn, sweltering nights spent in his garage, your favorite cherry red ice pops he kept in his freezer just for you, skin sticky with chlorine, cicadas and early dawn, the taste of beers you shouldnât be having and looks you shouldnât be giving.
Youâre sat on the counter, Joel stood between your legs, and as your head tips up, you can recognize the exact second Joel resigns. The moment he remembers who you are to him, and who he is to you.
âAlright. I better, um. I best be to gettinâ sweetheart. Iâll be speakinâ to you in the morninâ, you hear me?â He goes to step backward, away from where youâre sat, away from your pajama clad body. Skimpy and short, too short and he needs to step away from the girl that deep down doesnât belong to him. Not with his best buddyâs blood running through you. Away from the little girl heâs known for far too long.
Your small ankle hooks around his calf.
âWhy do we have to wait for the morning?â
Heâs stunned. Youâve stunned him. Peering up at him with doe eyes and heâs â heâs shocked.
And intrigued?
âItâs way past your bedtime young lady. And frankly if I stick around, well. . .â he scratches the greying scruff speckling his jaw. Heâs as close as he was before. Close enough to where he has to dip his head down to look at you. Close enough that you can feel the heat of his breath.
âWell?â
He sighs, softly, and inches slightly closer. His face is beside your ear now. He drops his voice into a gruff whisper.
âIâd say some things I shouldnât.â
Your eyebrow quirks and the corner of his mouth lifts into a shy smirk. âNot like that, kiddo. Itâd be mean. Iâd say rude things to you, and I donât wanâ to. Wanna save it for the morning. Give us a second to cool off, yâknow? Take a breather. Go from there.â He pats your shoulder. Joel Miller, always so level-headed.
Itâs time to go. Really, it is.
You gnaw your bottom lip between your teeth as Joel begins to tread through your quaint bathroom and toward the door of your bedroom. You should let him go. You shouldnât say anything else. Youâve already forever changed the trajectory of your relationship with Joel â but in the same sentiment, what is there to lose?
âIâm a big girl, Joel. I can handle hard conversations.â
Even through the dim lighting of your bedroom, lit only by the single glass lamp at your bedside, you can faintly see when Joelâs expression changes.
âCan you? Nearly done scared you off at the bar. Didnât I?â You watch as it sours, his eyebrows furrowing. Youâre beginning to test the little luck you have left for the night, but youâre either willingly ignorant, or simply donât notice.
You push either way.
Stupid, little naive girl.
âBecause you treat me like a child! You â you never treat me like Iâm a grown up. You treat me like Iâm still little. Like Iâm.â You suck in a sharp inhale. âLike Iâm Saââ
ââ Donât you finish that sentence. Fuckinâ hell. You pitchinâ a hissy fit? Is that what this is? I interrupt your little play date,â
âOh myââ
You really shouldâve stopped talking a long time ago. But you canât seem to find a way to switch this side of yourself off. Youâre frustrated â youâre embarrassed, still so abashed and thereâs nothing more you want at this moment than comfort; but you donât deserve that. Definitely not now. You may as well be itching for punishment with the way youâre rambling your mouth at Joel.
âShut it. You shut your mouth.â Joel raises his voice and you flinch. Both in the fear of your father potentially hearing a glimpse into your altercation, but also for you. You donât know whatâs gotten into you, and theres nothing you can do but watch as Joel drags his hands down his face. Sighing and shaking his head before storming up to you. Raising his pointer finger right in your face, his own scrunched and angry.
Albeit, he inhales a single shaky breath.
âYouâre right. You ainât Sarah. I failed her. I was too soft with her. Too weak. Too lenient with shit I shouldnât have been. Too â too goddamn proud. And so help me God, I will not make that same mistake with you. You hear me girl? When I speak, you listen. Goddamnit.â
Youâre frozen. Stuck in place and somehow the distance between you two has become even shorter. Heâs almost breathing down your neck. Seething and huffing with no regard for your space.
You donât know what to say. Choking on a sharp breath that you didnât even realize you had been holding.
âThis is â Joel, Iâm not⊠youâre not my⊠I donât need you toââ
âWhat? You wanna be my friend? Is that what youâre askinâ for? For us to be fuckinâ friendly?â
His nose brushes against your own and itâs so beside him, entirely uncharacteristic for him to be this close to you; undeniably too enraged to recognize the lack of distance between you. âHm?â
âNo, youâre not listening to meââ
âYou keep runninâ that mouth at me and Iâll show you just where it gets you, little girl.â
Youâre appealing to the ugliest parts of himself now. Playing right into his game of cat and mouse. The perfect pawn on his chess board. You know all the right buttons to press and you arenât even sure if you do it unwillingly.
âIâm sorry Joel.â You whisper so quiet and so sweetly that it nearly stops him in his tracks. Almost breaks him from the frustration he feels toward you.
Almost.
âI know you are babygirl. I know you areâŠâ
And for a fleeting moment, you have your Joel back in the room. The Joel youâve always known. The only person you know that looks at you with starry eyes and protects you like youâre as delicate as fine china.
He carefully cups your cheek before sighing, looking down toward the ground in an attempt to recalibrate.
To cool off.
To get a grip of himself.
To act like the adult he is.
The role model you deserve.
But. . .
Have your shorts always been that short?
Really â he doesnât mean to look, his eyes just snagged on a fleeting glimpse of the smooth expanse of your legs, and now heâs perplexed. Why would you even own shorts that tiny?
What purpose do they serve? Other than to appease. To appeal. To impress.
âTwo finger rule, sweetheart.â
Joel can feel himself begin to flush; his temper is brewing again.
Hadnât he taught you better than this?
You gulp. âJoel?â
âI know youâre sorry. But sorry ainât âgonna cut it this time, kiddo.â
âNo, please donâtââ please, anything but tell your father.
âI think we oughta try some tough love.â
âNo!ââ you scramble toward Joel; reaching out toward him in an attempt to get him to stop. To not go downstairs. To not tattle to that man about your bad behavior. To not bring him into this.
But in that same second, Joel hunches over you, grabbing your wrist and pinning it behind the small of your back.
He pulls you against his sturdy chest. Shushing you. Telling you to âbe quiet, goddamnit,âtightening his grip on your wrist when you begin to thrash â kicking at him, trying to free yourself from where youâre held against him, âstop being so squirrelly, kid. Stop. The fuckâs gotten into âya?â
You donât stop, too confused and frightened to do anything but flail like a fish out of water; gasping like you were gurgling for air when you feel the sudden force of your body colliding with the solid plush of your bed from below you.
You register the pressure first. The immense weight of Joel above you, all broad muscle mass, pinning you with the full heft of his bulk into the mattress. âStop,â he growls, and you can feel the warmth and softness of his lips graze against the shell of your ear.
The noise and clatter inside your head goes silent â everything coming to a static standstill as you finally take a single slow, albeit wheezed, breath. You quell beneath him.
âGood.â He whispers. âGood girl.â
Joel has you bent over the edge of your bed.
Joel.
Joel.
âYou ainât gonna like this one bit. Iâm sorry, honey. But you gotta learn somehow.â You canât register anything heâs saying because you can feel him. Against you. Pressed against your behind.
Oh. Oh.
You think of what to say but fall short. Instead, you lay still. Waiting. Your heart pattering so fast you wonder if he can hear it.
And then, you yelp; the resounding smack! of his palm shocks through your body. The small of your back where your flesh melts into its heart shape burns. Sending you up the mattress to get away from it.
Heâs just hit you. No â heâs just spanked you.
âWhat theââ
Before you can even begin to comprehend, let alone retort, his palm hits you even harder. So hard that the sound rattles you and rings in your ears.
His hand swats you again, and again, and again. You can barely distinguish the noise of him grunting with each move, watching as his face scowls when you peek your head back.
And then, his smacks hit lower,
lower,
and once more, lower.
Right over your most intimate part. All yours.
And now, partly his â with his palm cupping you there for a split second before pulling away instantaneously when your head whips around to meet his gaze.
His brows are still settled low on his face, with his eyes squinted at you and mouth twisted into a disgruntled scowl.
But beneath it, you can see his guilt rising. His unwitting abdication of you revealing to him in an instant.
You, slightly bent over your frilly bed.
You, gawking at him so bewildered heâs surprised you havenât slapped him back.
You.
You.
By him. Joel. Joel.
Joel dadâs-best-friend-Joel. Uncle Joel. Your old man. Your dadâs buddy, Joel. Beer buddy, Joel. Joel, Joel, Joel.
Joel who loves you as his own.
Fuck. Joel. Really?
You feel fractured in two. Dichotomized between the part of you that feels sickened, almost. Frightened. Pure and untouched being corrupted in a split second.
And, equally, by the part of you that doesnât feel that way at all. The fraction of you that feels wanted. Finally desired. Worthy. Worthy of Joel, worthy of his touch, worthy of his attention. His failed attempt of feigning composure a signal of how much youâve meant to him this whole time. Of how much you can be wanted. To be loved so much by him that he cares for you in every sense of the word. The tiny, insidious part of you that felt jealousy toward those that Joel unconditionally loved. Wishing you were in their place.
Sarah.
Admittedly, you hadnât seen this coming. But it wasnât as though you hadnât wished for it. Like that one time in Joelâs garage. When your father was passed out inside, left asleep on the couch with his beer left warming in his hold, you hiked your skirt a few inches higher; sat alone with Joel in his old camping chairs and demurely playing a game of one sided footsie with him. Joel was talking at you about something monotonous. Some old lecture.
And maybe it was nothing. Really, it mightâve been mostly your imagination. But you swore there was something different about the way he peered up at you â not just anger for your silly game of footsie despite urging you to pay attention, but real hunger â (you pulled your foot away in an instant.)
Joel staggers back, your stunned expression mirroring his own. Youâre still frozen in position as you watch him pace in the small space of your bedroom. Nearly knocking over your dainty jewelry and makeup stashed on your porcelain vanity, swearing loudly when he inevitably does, his hip bumping your pink perfume bottle in his moment of frantic realization. He hinges down, gently placing it back in its position before settling his attention back onto you.
âIââ your eyes lock momentarily before he twists away. âSit up for meâ he murmurs with his back facing you. Youâve never seen Joel so frazzled. So out of his own willpower. You hesitate for a beat longer before gradually turning your body toward where heâs stood with his hand in his heads, perching yourself on the edge of your bed. Your hands are politely placed on your lap despite your ass still burning red beneath you.
Joel is victimized by his own puzzle of sorts too. Pulled between his rational self that loves you innocently like his own. Wanting nothing more than to watch you succeed â build your career, have a family of your own, grandchildren, visiting your old man Joel. The white picket fence you deserve. The happy ending heâd give anything to see you have. To be the one stable role model in your life, waiting at your every beck and call. The only thing a man like him is good for. The only thing he lives for.
But beneath it all lurks that ugly, ruined, most selfish inner part of himself fueled entirely by his bloodlust. His nauseating thirst to teach you and have you and protect you like his own kin. Greedily ravenous to claim you in every way he can without his blood running through your veins, without his last name belonging alongside your first. To teach you every lesson he can mangle his way into. To put his love into you. Make it stick.
He cautiously walks toward you. The room is so silent that you can hear his knees creak as he hinges to sit docile beside you. You arenât sure which version of him youâre with, and you arenât sure which one you want.
âThat wasnât right. Iâm sorry sweetheart. Shit. Iâm sorry. That was too much, kiddo. I know.â He finally braves a glance at you and swears under a loud sigh. âHey. Hey. Look at me, kid.â He holds your face in both of his warm hands. âIâm sorry, honey. That ainât right of me to do to you. I know, baby.â
But if it wasnât right, then why are your insides all tangled up? You hate to admit it but youâre ignited. And judging by the stiff sensation pressed against your knee, you bravely assume Joel feels it too.
You gawk at him. A little coquettish without really thinking about it. Slightly blinded by your impulse and batting your eyelashes as kittenish as you can without being obvious.
But Joel knows. He always does. He doesnât have a sixth sense, he just has age. Knowledge. Power over you in the form of sun-weathered wrinkles and a body shaped by years of hard work and callouses to prove his determination cause of providing for his family. The same hands that are delicately bracing your face having brought women pleasure for decades longer than you have existed and fixed your nightstand when the hinges broke.
âIâve got decades on you, little girl.â
âOh.â He fauxâs a puzzled look, but you know that heâs well aware of your situation.
âOh? Is that how it is?â
You break your silence. Gulping embarrassingly louder than you intended to. âJoelââ
âYou liked that, didnât you?â You go to retort, shaking your head and aimlessly stuttering. Joel stares at you wordlessly, his mouth slightly agape and scanning your face, his two hands still cupping your cheeks gently. Slightly disgusted at your gall. At how you mirror his own.
âThat was supposed to be a punishment. You werenât supposed toâŠlike it.â
âIâm . . . sorry?â Youâre scared your heart might lurch out of your chest when you recognize the expression on his face. Hooded eyes and lips pressed in a tight line. The one youâve only seen once before, in his garage. Starving.
âYouâre just a kid. Just a goddamn baby. You shouldnâtâŠwe shouldnât ⊠this ainât right.â And yet, your faces are a hairbreadth apart.
His eyes darken; heâs onto you. His mouth melts against yours hard, so hard that you would think your lips may bruise tomorrow if you even had time to think. You can feel him everywhere. Pawing at every inch of your bare skin that he can access and gripping, tightly. Soothing the red flush of your behind with a fierce grope. You gasp, but Joel steals it as an opportunity to satiate his appetite; deepening the feverish kiss by stroking his tongue against yours. You canât do anything but mesh your lips just as hard against his, clumsily trying to match his fervor until you feel his hand slither to the waistband of your shorts. Teetering at the lace edge.
âJoel⊠I donât know if⊠Iâve neverâŠ.â he pulls away to catch his breath, the both of you panting into each otherâs mouths, his forehead pressed against yours as you feel his capable fingers toying with the delicate lace of your waistband. He steals another kiss over your panting mouth.
âI know, kiddo. Donât be scared, honey. Iâll make it so good. I promise.â His knuckles accidentally graze right over where youâre most sensitive and you gasp, bucking your hips up absentmindedly in response to his touch. He smirks.
âSo responsive. Nobody ever touch you here? Really?â You know he knows the answer, but he just wants you humiliated â willing, shaking shake your head ânoâ just so he can groan; biting the delicate junction of your neck and nipping at the soft skin there. Nudging his fingers a bit harder into that sensitive, untouched spot and you writhe embarrassingly beneath him.
âWaitâŠâ Without a word, he slowly tugs down the thin cotton of your shorts. You hear him suck in a sharp inhale at the sight of you almost bare, all for him. Joel silently wishes he felt even a sliver more of guilt at the sight of your white ruffled panties. His best buddies daughter. Complete with a tiny bow at the center. But he doesnât. If anything, it just confirms what heâs always known; that youâre his â
â The only reason heâs kept that bastard around as company. For the promise of you. To be there for you. Like the time he drove ten hours to your campus for parents weekend when your father said he was too busy. A date, if he remembers correctly. But Joel didnât mind the drive.
He groans. Itâs a deep, guttural noise and you blush. You were half expecting Joel to be more collected, more detached, but what would you know. Heat bubbles in your gut all the same as your hips buck once more.
Joel eyes you like youâre something to eat. Biting the bone of his knuckle as you lay there, watching him, coyly, pressing your knees together in an attempt of preserving any semblance of your dignity.
In a split second, Joelâs head lowers to be level with your thighs. Gently spreading them apart to gain closer access to you and mouthing over the cotton material of your panties without a second thought. You whine, legs kicking out as you feel Joelâs mouth soil your panties even more than they already are.
âO-oh,â you try to push his head away, yet clamp your legs around his head in the same effort, overwhelmed at all of the sudden contact, but he just grips the backs of your knees â deepening his soft kiss over your still-clothed mound.
You donât know how to respond to the newfound pleasure except to try and squirm away, to which he simply hovers his head above you, replacing his mouth with a sturdy rub of his fingers, watching as your legs jolt and immediately kick at his shoulder blades; trying to squirm away from the pressure by scooting your body up the mattress.
Joel tuts softly, grabbing the backs of your knees and heaves you back down toward him until youâre prone beneath him, legs forced to pliantly widen around the breadth of his burly torso. He pins you there by his hips, bearing his full weight onto you until you feel his pelvis against yours â meeting your core in a deliberate, brief grind and smirking when you twitch beneath him.
âYou gonna let me touch on you or you gonâ keep beatinâ me? Hm?â He does it again and you shiver.
âIâm notâ Iâm â stop being so â dramatic,â itâs hard to form a sentence with Joel is continuously rolling his hips against yours, not when you can feel just how hard he is. How heâs heavy against your core and you canât believe that this is Joel.
Almost as if he could read what you were thinking, which would be feasible with the way youâre shuddering beneath him, he leans in for a greedy kiss, open mouthed and messy, before humming into the shell of your ear. âYou feel that?â he punches his hips against yours to emphasize his wanting and your breath hitches.
âYou feel how hard I am for you?â he nips your earlobe, rocking against you once more to let you really feel the heft of him. To remind you of his brute size, to make sure you donât forget that mounted above you is a man. Strong enough to have you crushed into the mattress with no effort, large enough that your legs are forced to part almost painfully wide to accommodate his virile size, old enough that he has the crows lines to prove it and an age that means you couldâve been calling him daddy and mean it.
âYou gonâ be good for me now?â you nod against your better judgment, exhaling a shaky breath as he lifts to slither his hand to the waistband of your panties. âYou gonna let me see you?â he whispers, teasing you by faking a tug of your underwear just to snicker when your legs immediately clam.
âCâmon, darlinâ. Donât be like that. Spread âem legs for your old man.â You donât, still shaking, not even budging the tense press of your knees when Joel tries to pry your legs open himself.
He hums in contemplation. âLetâs get those traininâ wheels off. How âbout that? How âbout this?â his calloused fingers trace their way along your abdomen to the edge of your cami top, rubbing the exposed skin where your top has rucked up, leaning down to kiss your navel gently.
He peers up at you beneath hooded eyes when your hips shift. âHm? Whatâdya say?â
âO-okay. Yeah.â
âYeah?â
You nod, letting him slowly pull your shirt up the expanse of your torso and audibly groan at the sight of you exposed. Your bare breasts all his to leer at and he licks his lips, pinning your wrists beside your head when you reflexively go to hide your chest.
âFuck,â he murmurs beneath his breath, reaching out to rudely grip at your chest and smirking when you whine. Biting the flesh of your breast and groaning even louder. You shift uncomfortably beneath him, the burning of your core getting harder to ignore, and you buck your hips into nothing. Joel meets your restlessness with his fingers once more, rubbing small circles onto where youâre most sensitive.
âJoelââ
ââ Let me make you feel good.â And this time you donât oppose when he starts to tug your panties down, stealing a look between your legs before you can try and close them again, forcing your legs open with a rough grip on your knees and swearing, whistling lowly and you try reach out your leg to kick him in humiliation.
âDirty girl. Youâre wet.â
You tuck your lip between your teeth. âJust⊠do something.â
Ignoring you, he continues his ogling; staring at you between your legs as though you werenât there, reaching out to give you a curt smack over your core just to see how you would react. You yelp and squirm, trying to kick him once more and he laughs.
âJoelâŠâ youâre getting fussy now. Rubbing your feet against the mattress and gnawing at your bottom lip, waiting for him to just stop scrutinizing you and do anything.
âShh, baby. Iâve got you.â Tentatively, he finally touches you. Your breath hitches when he gently brushes his fingers against where youâre most sensitive. Pressing a bit harder when he sees your toes begin to curl and your eyes widen. âPretty little pussy.â
âStopââ
âAnyone ever touch you like this?â he asks you so casually that it sounds almost clinical. Like he isnât currently touching you harder just to see you react in a way that makes his dick hard.
âN-no,â you whine, leg jolting when he momentarily speeds up his motions, pressing harder onto your bud and rubbing tiny circles there.
âNo? Really?â
âFuck - oh! - off.â He chuckles, seemingly amused before heâs pulling his hand away and hooking them under your thighs to position himself between your legs once again. Lowering his head, blowing against where youâre bare to make you shiver.
âHow âbout this? Anyone ever do this?â Joel peers up from between your legs, fixating his gaze onto yours and leaning to lazily kiss you right over the center of your core.
âOh!â you yelp, the sensation of Joelâs mouth overwhelmingly hot against your clit makes your knees desperately try and clamp together. Joel wanted to tease you a bit. Bring you apart with his tongue. Play with you. But hearing you keen at just a measly kiss has his head spinning and cock hard â he ruts against your frilly sheets like a teenage boy, his large hands gripping the sides of your ass to bring you impossibly closer. Groaning at the taste of you and kissing and laving his tongue against your clit like a man starved.
Itâs lewd. Youâre so wet that you can audibly hear the squelches of where you meet Joelâs hot mouth and itâs obscene. Mortifying and mind-blowing. Your legs shake and hips spasm, but Joel just pins his forearm against your hipbones, holding you in place and shaking his head against you.
You try to bite your lip to keep your sounds at bay, but itâs no use â that unfamiliar build in your stomach creeps faster and faster and youâre moaning, too turned on and bewildered to stop yourself.
Joel pulls away. Grinning when you whine, your chest heaving beautifully and Joel is possibly the hardest heâs ever been. Which is shocking, considering his age and that little blue pill he keeps on his nightstand.
âWhy,â you whimper, hips squirming at the sudden lack of contact and Joel just laughs at you.
âPatience, sweet girl. Gotta get âya ready.â
Ready?
Oh.
Ready.
Your attention is abruptly brought to the front of Joelâs jeans. The seemingly hefty bulge presses at the denim seams, so large that the fabric is taut and you gulp. If Joel senses your hesitation, he doesnât say anything. He just wordlessly reaches his hand back between your legs, using your distraction to press a single bulking finger right between your folds.
You cry out, the stretch of his one finger being equal to two of yours and it burns.
âHurtsââ heâs hovering above you, pinning your knees open with his own, mouth ghosting over yours and breathing down your neck. Kissing you softly on your jaw when he feels your tight, dripping cunt envelop him to the knuckle.
âFuckinâ hell. This all for me?â his finger presses impossibly deeper, curling and beneath the fullness, youâre starting to feel blips of pleasure beneath â sparking in bursts as he keeps curling his finger inside of you; gritting his teeth at how tight you pulse around his digit.
âAsked you a question darlinâ,â he hums low into your ear, beginning to properly thrust his finger into you and smirk when your breath hitches, hips bucking into his touch. You can feel your slickness down your thighs and you burn in humiliation at the thought. Without warning, Joel tries to push in a second finger â groaning when your walls refuse him entry, clamping so tightly around his finger that he has to grit his teeth as to not come right there.
âRelax, baby. Ease up a bit, kiddo. Shit â fuckinâ stranglinâ my finger, ainât âya?â
âSorry. Jusâ feels reallyâŠ!â you cry out once more, rutting your hips when his thumb comes to softly press at your clit. Your whole body shakes, and for a moment, you relax just enough so that Joel is able to push a second finger into you. His forehead presses against yours, thrusting two of his fingers into you and curling with no remorse.
âFeels good, huh?â
âUh-huh!â you grind your hips back against his hand, feeling him stroking that spot inside of you that your measly fingers could never reach on your own. Your eyes roll back, your hand flying out to grab Joelâs wrist when he begins to move his fingers even faster and harder inside of you; you keen, your entire body tensing and back arching up and he impossibly slots a third digit into you, his wrist continuously circling and you â are you crying?
âSo-full,â you whine, and sure enough thereâs tears running down your cheek. He wants to tell you to just wait until he finally has his way with you, if heâll even fit, but youâre clamping around his fingers so tightly that youâre unmistakably about to come. You feel beside yourself, the foreign noises youâre making registering but failing to register over the overwhelming heat coursing through your body, your toes curling and legs shaking.
âWait-wait-wait-itâs too much⊠Joel!â he ignores you, curling his fingers into you with a crazed fervor that leaves you gasping, you weakly try to push his circling wrist away but itâs no use, your wrist limply falling to your side.
âThaaats it, sweet girl. Iâve got you.â And, then, it violently crashes; your mouth slacking and body bowing as it spreads through you, searing white hot as you sob against his hovering mouth.
Your legs flail as it just keeps going, his fingers still moving inside of you and you cry out.
âI know, baby. I know. Iâve got you. Da-â he has half the mind to cut himself off.
You can barely register it over the crushing haze youâre in, your legs still twitching in the after effects of what is monumentally your first ever orgasm.
âWhat?â you timidly squeak, eyes still closed and panting for air, opening them to see Joel licking the fingers that were just inside of you, before watching as he palms himself over his jeans, his cheeks flushed and eyes dark, eyeing you beneath him with a predatory, hungry stare. Your mind goes blank.
âAre we gonnaâŠâ you whisper. Shaky leg lifting to press your foot demurely against where the denim tents, and he groans, gripping your ankle and pressing a soft kiss to the skin there.
âFuck?â he replies, curt and lewd and you blush, covering your face with your hands as if you hadnât just cum all over his fingers. He smirks, and only now have you noticed that heâs still fully dressed and youâre completely bare beneath him.
âDunno. Donât know if youâre ready for that. Youâre just a kid.â
âNo⊠I am,â you whine petulantly and he tilts his head at you.
âYou gonna be a big girl for me?â
You nod your head, hands grabbing at his rattled flannel to try and take it off yourself.
âYes. Yes, yes, I swear. Please.â He swats your hands away, peering down at you with a smirk in tow at your babbling.
âOh, so she can be polite.â Youâre reminded of all the times Joel tried to grill your please-and-thank-youâs into you. Not that you werenât a polite, meek girl, you were, just not always with him â slacking on your manners at neighborhood barbecues and having to remind you by hovering your plate away from you, âwhat dâya say?â, only passing it to you when you grumpily rolled your eyes and mumbled âplease, sir.â You donât dwell long on the queasiness that follows.
Slowly, Joel lifts his shirtâ his large biceps that heâs built from decades of construction and handy-work raising above his head to reveal the tan, built, albeit slight pudgy body that youâve seen countless of times in his garage or by the lake, but never like this. Hulking over you and overwhelmingly man. Your eyes linger back on his face. Painfully handsome; his crows feet are a homecoming â cornering his soft, dark eyes â that sweet puppy-dog stare.
His salt and pepper scruff. Curling strands of greying hair. Saccharine tobacco. Humid southern air. The leather seats of his classic truck. âAlright smartass. Who sings this?â
Then, he moves to his belt, deft fingers pulling the leather through the loops and tossing it somewhere in the midst of your room, tugging his jeans down until heâs just in his boxers and then â oh.
Heâs big. Not that thereâs any history to compare him with, but itâs undeniable. You gasp at the sight, your eyes flickering to where heâs exposed himself. It looks almost sore. The thick tip of him dripping. The sight is vulgar. You gulp. Not quite sure what you were expecting, but the fat length of him and greying tuft of hair (even there!) an unrelenting reminder of his maturity, age, and above all, authority over you.
He examines your every reaction carefully, fisting himself for a moment and hissing upon the brief contact. He moves closer and forces your legs to spread to accommodate his bulking size; his body is so much larger than yours that your inner thighs burn at the stretch.
âThatâsâŠare you sure thatâs gonna⊠fit?â You whisper sheepishly and he barely hides his cocky smirk, hovering above you and pressing an achingly tender peck against your forehead, stroking the top of your head delicately before meeting your lips â unlike the other kisses; slowed and passionate. Intimate and gentle enough that it feels like conversation. He slots his lips against yours once, twice more; I love you, let me put my love into you, like this.
âWeâll make it fit. Always worryinâ your pretty little head, arenât you darlinâ?â With your hips forcefully splayed beneath him, he grabs himself and begins to line up his cock to where youâre embarrassingly wet. You squirm at the sensation.
âAlways worryinâ. Always stressinâ. Poor baby.â He teases you, baiting you into holding your breath to see you buck your hips in anticipation as he traces your slit with his painfully red tip.
âJust need some lovinâ, donât-ya?â He slots the head of his member against your opening. Forcing the bulbous tip slightly inside of you and you gasp at the intrusion.
âY-yes. Please.â Love me.
âBiiig stretch now, kiddo. It might hurt a little. But Iâve got âya, okay?â You nod eagerly, lifting your head a bit to try and see him begin to enter you painfully slow, the both of you gasping, he leans against your forehead, tilting his own gaze downwards to watch alongside you.
âWaitâit hurts,â you yelp, the stretch of merely the tip of him inside of you already barely manageable; he halts, trying to distract you with languid, tender kisses up the expanse of your neck. Trying for his own sake to think about anything about how tight you are. About how sacred this is. Your first time, your innocence, now his to shape. His little girl. All his.
âGotta let me in, sweetheart. Let me show you how to make love, baby.â You desperately wish that phrase would send your spine crawling rather than arching, his old man theatrics in any other scenario surely earning a snort from you, but instead, awfully, you whine, trying to spread your legs further to make space for him despite the stinging pain inside betraying you.
Cautiously, he begins to move again. Pushing his length ever-so-slightly deeper until your heat has swallowed him halfway, your hips squirming in discomfort. Beneath him, youâre whining in bursts of piercing pain. Youâve never felt so full. Sweat is dripping between the two of you, his large arms bracketing your trembling frame and all you can see or think or feel is Joel. You peel your eyes open just enough to make eye-contact with him from above you, his silhouette impossibly broad and backlit only by the warmth of your bedside lamp, and by the glare of streetlights fluttering through your lace curtains.
He stares at you like heâs in disbelief. His eyebrows pinched and mouth slightly agape, pressing open-mouthed kisses over your own gasping mouth when he somehow gets even deeper â a sharp, shaky cry escaping you as he finally bottoms out. His hips finally flush against yours. He meets your wail with a groan of his own, slumping over you and inadvertently pinning his hipbones hard against the most sensitive part of you.
You try scramble away, clawing the sides of your bed, and then Joelâs bulking arms, but itâs no use â Joelâs full body weight presses against you. Fastening you to the mattress and any slight movement hurts; the thick weight of him splitting you open for him heedless of your aching.
âItâs too much â youâre too much â too deep, Joel, youââ
âI know baby, I know. Hardest part is over. Just,â he gulps when you clench around him, nipping the skin of your jaw to keep him from thrusting into the wet heat of you. âJust gotta-fuck-trust me now, darlinâ.â
âIt hurts,â you subtly shuffle again to try and feel any bit of comfortability but it backfires â shooting a twinge of pain back through your spine and you cry out once again.
Joel stops you by bearing even more of his body weight against you, tutting softly at your naive defiance and whispering gently in your ear. âCâmon, baby. Be brave for me. Donât hurt yourself now.â He drags his knuckles against your pinched expression, leaning in for another doting kiss against your mouth. You feel his fingers trail their way down the expanse of your stomach to brush soft circles against your bud, caressing you there in hopes of distracting you from the ache. Pecking kiss after kiss and sighing contentedly when he feels you begin to slacken, just barely spasming around him and he shivers.
âYou feelinâ any better?â
âYeah.â
âYeah?â
You nod, tucking your bottom lip between your teeth. Your hips jerk against Joelâs, but this time, you gasp â not in pain, but at the fleeting feeling of Joelâs thick moving inside of you. It aches, but the brief movement forces a meek moan to spill from your lips.
âStartinâ to feel good?â You nod again, bucking your hips experimentally and the both of you groan at the feeling. You do it again, huffing at the blips of pleasure when you feel the slight drag inside of you.
âYeah, I think soâŠI think,â your hips move once more to consolidate what youâre about to ask for. âYeah. Uh-huh. Can you, please, um, I think Iâm ready.â
âYâsure?â And when your heel lifts to dig into the small of his back, he doesnât question you again.
âPlease.â You whisper, your saccharine voice breaking when he meets your tiny jolts with a single, lethargic thrust â carefully pulling his hips away until only the tip remains inside of you, then driving the entire length of him back inside with a deep roll.
You keen, back arching off the mattress despite Joelâs entire weight melded against you; writhing under him as he starts actually fucking into you with fervor, rocking the length of him into you and grunting in your ear.
If his fingers made you feel full before, this was an entirely different ballpark. You could almost swear you could feel every vein of his shaft and throb of him inside you as he fills you impossibly deeper.
âJoel,â you whimper, head tilting back and he latches frantically onto the expanse of your neck, biting so hard you know youâll be bruised in the morning, but all you can care to think about or feel is Joel.
âShh, baby.â He coos, using all his willpower as to not rut desperately into you, and to think about the old man that could very well be downstairs; passed out or just now clicking the door open.
His calculated pace falters for a beat when both of your legs wrap tightly around the bulk of his lower back, meeting his languid pumps with a grind, moaning and squirming when he grazes against a spot you never knew to exist within you. His hips snapping against yours roughly and you nod eagerly.
âYes, Joel. Feels good now, Joel. Joel,â you cry his name out like a mantra, âmore. Please. Joel. Please. Plââ
âFuck,â he growls, his hand clasping over your mouth and gripping the sides of your jaw, squeezing so tightly you almost bite your tongue. âYou âtryna wake up the whole goddamn neighborhood?â
You shudder, eyes rolling back and Joelâs careful composure is slipping â the sound of smacking flesh ringing through the room as he begins to really give it to you; brutally plunging into you and grunting with every erratic strike.
Your whines are stifled under his palm, and youâre so wet that youâre dripping â leaving a mess over Joelâs thighs and stomach.
His knee hikes up to position your leg open in a way that fills you even more, the stretch burning deliciously and you canât do anything but take him, his pace unrelenting and bulk pinning you in position as you spasm.
âThatâs it, honey.â And then, he fucking leans even closer, hovering his face less than an inch away from yours, locking his gaze directly into yours and make-shifting a kiss over his hand â right over where your mouth would be under the current suffocation of his palm.
Itâs getting too much. Youâre bonded to the bed under his crushing weight, the feeling of him splitting you open sending tremors through you. Youâre too full. Heâs too deep. Heâs hitting that same spot over and over and sending violent shivers through you. You try to tell him to stop, heâs too big, itâs too much, but itâs no use â his hand remains the same, fixed over your mouth, and youâre positive youâre drooling.
âThaaatâs the spot, hm?â He can hear your hiccuped moans beneath the muted suffocation of his palm. You can feel every drag of him inside of you. âDoinâ - fuck! - doinâ so well for me, ainât ya?â Heâs really starting to lose it now. Your heat tight as a fist around him, clenching wildly, and he canât help but slump even more against you, groaning unabashedly into your ear. Going insane with how perfect you feel. How perfect you are. His sweet, precious girl. All his.
âBrave little girl.â His hips are slamming frenetically. âDoinâ so well for your daddy.â
Your eyes shoot open to meet Joelâs disheveled stare, eyes wide and his hips pause on the deepest part inside of you, holding right against that sensitive cluster of nerves and your hips frantically write against him.
If you were any less depraved as a girl, if you hadnât held that awful void inside of you for so long, maybe you wouldâve pushed Joel off of you. Told him to fuck off. Called him a creep.
You could try to blame it on Joelâs virile stature, curse it as irresistible, but you know heâs the only person that can patch that cavity. The only one you want to.
You sob â rolling against him in a frenzy and whining because yes. Yes. You want to tell him yes. The word growling out of him ringing true like a depraved piece of a puzzle slotting into place; his hips meeting yours desperately as he rocks into you again. Your hand clutches onto his wrist as you nod. Yes. He eases his grip over your mouth, weaving your lips together instead in a bruising kiss.
Youâre whimpering unabashedly into the kiss.
âI know, honey. Iâve got âya. Daddyâs got âya. Tell me who your daddy is.â
You might not be able to face yourself when dawn arrives, but right now, it feels too good to deprive yourself of what feels right. What settles into your bones like tantalizing belonging.
âYou,â you whine, chasing his mouth to steal another zealous kiss.
âSay it. Shit, honey, you feel so fuckinâ perfect.â
âOhmy-â his pace is the most merciless itâs been since he first entered you. Slamming against you ruthlessly and you can feel that coil begin to tighten.
âWhoâs your daddy?â
âJoelââ Youâre on the precipice. He can feel it. Clenching around him and heâs surely going to follow behind soon.
âFuckinâ say itââ
âYou! Daddy. Daddy. Daddy, please!â
âThatâs right.â He growls, and your head is spinning with adrenaline. âThink that boy could do this to you? Be what you need?â He slows his thrusts into deep, passionate drives into you. âBe your fuckinâ daddy? No, baby. Iâm your daddy, ainât I? Shit, yâneeded this. Needed a man. To make love to you.
âYes. Daddy.â Nothing could drag him away from this moment. From you. Your sweet scent. Vanilla and soft whipped musk of you. Your heady skin. Your beautiful disposition. Holding his breath just looking at you. Dreading the release building in his gut because he knows heâs made his grave, and heâll have to lay in it come daylight.
Your entire body seizes; arching and shuddering at the electricity convulsing through you. White sparkling light littering your vision as you clamp tightly around his length, quivering and keening at the shockwaves.
Your mouth is agape, wordlessly clawing at his back to try and pull him even closer to you, trembling as he fucks you through it.
The first blush of daylight is creeping through your lace curtains, spilling silhouettes of the intricate netting across your bedroom floor. Still too early for the birds to sing yet. Delicate filigree shadowing the span of Joelâs skin, muted rays of light beginning to infiltrate your room and dimly light corners of your room.
âDaddy loves you. Fuck. âM close, baby. Shit. Shit.â He growls into your ear, rutting into you madly and your legs tighten around him.
âPlease.â He tries to shrug you off him, head spinning with the fogginess of his imminent release, but you flash him a blissed out look; eyes glazed over and pressing a painfully delicate kiss against the junction of his neck.
Sweet thing you.
Youâre still convulsing beneath him, frantically grinding your hips against hiss. âPlease, daddy. Love you. I love you. IloveyouJoelââ His entire body weight slumps against you. Your bodies melding and shuddering against each other as you milk him through his orgasm. You canât get close enough. Wanting to crawl inside his skin and stay there.
He groans; gruff and virile and Joel. All him. Spilling into you like he belongs there. Like he has the right to. His little girl.
âI love you, daddy. I love you. I love you.â
And for a moment, breath gasping into each otherâs mouth, and dawn-light lurking behind outside, you and Joel can play pretend.
Pretend that you are his, no matter how short lived.

You excuse yourself from the booth and head for the bar, plopping yourself on the velvet cushion of a creaky bar stool as you set your purse on the sticky bartop, ordering yourself another drink. Your phone chimes, and you sigh as you pull it out of your purse along with a pen and notepad, knowing itâs an email with a list of requests from your boss. He did tell you heâd send it to you before the end of the night.Â
Itâs when one of your hands is pressed to your temple, the other scribbling down your bossâ requests on paper when you hear it â a low, gravelly Southern drawl, a voice laced with honey â that you thought youâd never hear again.Â
âThis seat taken?â
Your pen freezes for a moment; you could pick that voice out of a suspect line-up. It never left you. But you willingly ignore him and decide youâre going to have a little fun of your own with him, so you continue finalizing your thoughts on paper as he situates himself beside you and orders a glass of whiskey while heâs at it.Â
âWhatâs a pretty girl like you doinâ sittinâ in a place like this all by herself?âÂ
âIâm not alone. My friends are over there,â you throw your thumb, pen in hand, over your shoulder, jutting to your booth. âJust needed another drink,â you say, your eyes never leaving the notepad.Â
âWhy wonât you let me see your face, darlin?â he asks, head tilting to the side, assessing you.Â
You snort. âWhy. So you can decide whether or not my face is pretty enough to fuck â Mr. Miller?â Your voice drops an octave at the end of the sentence.Â
You finally turn your head so youâre face to face with the man beside you, the father of your ex-boyfriend.Â
Surprise flashes across his face; his mouth hangs agape briefly before he shuts it tightly. You watch as the Adamâs apple bops slowly in his throat. For once, the father of your shit-eating, cheating ex-boyfriend doesnât have a comeback. He clears his throat as he attempts to recover.Â
âDidnât realize it was you, darlinâ,â he says gruffly, a hand coming up to scratch his beard.Â
You chuckle to yourself a little. âOf course you didnât. The last time we saw each other was what? A year ago? Maybe more?â you quip.Â
âYou look different,â he says matter-of-factly, eyes glossing over your figure so quick you almost miss it.Â
You raise an eyebrow at him; the corner of your mouth kicks up as you tilt the rim of your glass to your lips, hiding your smirk behind a sip.
âGood. I mean â you look good,â he tips his glass on its heel, eyeing it as he toys with it.Â
You tilt your head in a shrug, âI needed a change.â
After Joel Millerâs son cheated on you and broke your heart, after you let the hurt linger for a few weeks and told your sob story to your friends who happily listened, you took their advice.Â
And now here you are, a little over a year later, sitting beside your exâs father, whom you once hated to admit to yourself â no, you never really admitted it to yourself, but you found him attractive. Fuck. Who were you kidding? You didnât just find Joel Miller, the father of your ex-boyfriend, attractive; you found yourself wanting to open your legs for him more than you did for his son, whom you had been dating for eight months.Â
His eyes fall to your chest, trailing down the low cut of your top, and fixating on the peaks of your nipples beneath the tight fabric, and your heart stutters. âQuite the change,â a hint of a glint swimming in his hazel eyes.Â
You canât say the same for him.
You take him in now; he looks almost exactly the same, apart from a few more wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes. Still, heâs somehow more handsome.Â
His tousled salt-and-pepper hair still sits messily on his head, though his beard is lined with more silver than you remember.Â
Fuck.Â
You pull your bottom lip between your teeth as your eyes trail down his body, thick shoulders and thick arms deliciously clad in his black leather jacket, and beneath that, his white t-shirt pulls taut across his broad chest. Â
 And oh.Â
Joelâs head turns, peering over his shoulder at the sound of glass breaking. Your eyes flick back up and catch a curl of black ink on the tanned skin beneath his collar. Thatâs new.Â
When he turns back, he raises the glass to his lips with a scoff, clouding the inside of it, and the dim light from above the bar catches on the square face of a gold band on his marked pinkie finger. Thatâs also new. Your eyes donât miss that his fourth finger still remains devoid of a wedding ring.Â
âI have your son to thank for that." You drop your phone, pen, and notepad into your purse, giving him your full attention.
A muscle in Joelâs jaw ticks. Flicks his tongue across his bottom lip before he bites it. Is it a show of anger? Disappointment? Youâre not quite sure.
But there is one thing that you are sure of: Joel Miller liked having you around. You knew it. You were aware that his eyes lingered whenever he saw you. You caught it from the very first time. When you showed up at his house, in jeans that clung to you like skin, how you bent at the waist to fish your keys out of his sofa cushion, and in your periphery, caught the subtle tilt of his head to get a better look at how the denim hugged your ass just right, feeling his eyes boring into you, your skin sizzling with heat.
If youâre being honest, you didnât care. You didnât feel guilty or shameful for how Joel looked at you. You basked in how he made you feel; you certainly werenât getting that kind of attention from his son. He had his eyes (and his dick) on someone else.Â
You liked how that very last night you spent at Joel Millerâs house â a fortnight before you broke up with his son â you padded down the hallway to the bathroom in an old skirt that you had outgrown (wearing it only because it was the last of clean bottoms before laundry day), and you overheard Joel Miller in his bedroom, fucking his fist and coming with a gruff groan of your name on his lips. Â
You just werenât sure if he knew that you knew. Â
His body twists, props a leg up on the footrest of your bar stool. âWhat happened between you two? He never talked about it,â he inquires.Â
You scoff. âHe gets that from you, you know, not talking about things. Think he knows it too.âÂ
Confusion floods his features.Â
Your eyes drop to the inside of your glass. âYour divorce. Jason complained all the time about how neither of you talked about it.â
âThere was nothinâ to talk about. She left,â he quips.Â
âShe cheated on you,â you retort.Â
âHow didââÂ
âHe knew, and he watched when you didnât fight it. Think thatâs why he did the same to me.âÂ
âThat kid. Always fucking trouble,â he huffs, then takes a short sip.Â
âHey, you raised him,â you joke.Â
âI didnât raise him to be a piece of shit,â he bites, shakes his head instantly, eyes meeting yours, and thereâs something behind them that you canât quite place yet.
âIâm not saying itâs your fault, I justâ" You sigh exasperatedly, âI think seeing how you didnât fight for your marriage, for your wife, messed with him. And as much as I hate him for getting his dick wet in another girl, I think... well, now I know why he did it." Right shoulder tips in a slight shrug.Â
Joelâs eyebrows shoot up into his hairline.Â
âWhat?â you ask.Â
âNothin'âI didnât expect Iâd ever hear you say that.â
 You look at him pointedly.Â
âGettinâ his dick wet,â he repeats. âIâm not used to hearing you say things like that sâall,â he says with a breathless laugh, shaking his head a little.Â
You sigh. âTold you, heartbreak is a hell of a thing.âÂ
âYou didnât deserve that darlinâ, Mâsorry,â he soothes. He leans towards you, a heavy hand dropping to your bare thigh, fingers wrapping tightly around it. It takes everything in you not to squeeze your thighs shut at his touch.Â
You avert your eyes, scanning the crowd in the bar, your eyes eventually landing on your friends all crammed in the booth before looking back at Joel. âEverything happens for a reason, I guess.âÂ
His head dips, eyebrows go up in surprise, his expression a slight mixture of shock and guilt. âYou really believe that?âÂ
You flash him a soft smile. Youâre not sure that you do, but selfishly, itâs easier than the truth, and whatever it was, youâre not concerned about it anymore. âItâs fine, Mr. Miller, honestly," you clarify.Â
His calloused thumb rubs small circles on your thigh; heat radiates there. âHow many times, I gotta tell you, itâs Joel,â he insists.
Your eyes roll, âalright. Joel, itâs fine. Iâm much happier now.â
âOh yeah?" His hand releases your thigh; your body feels like itâll wilt without the heat of his touch. His arms cross over as he leans forward on the bartop. The cuff of his left sleeve raises, revealing ink curling around his wrist. Did he complete his sleeve? You swallow thickly, your eyes lingering.Â
"Got yourself a new boyfriend?ââ He asks.Â
You finally peel your eyes away, arching your brow. âWhat makes you say that?âÂ
His boot brushes against your bare ankle as he turns towards you; electricity sparks up your leg and up the base of your spine, awakening a long-dormant need. âNothinâ, just reckon that a pretty thing like yourself has a new stupid college fella.â
You chuckle. âI donât date, it's not worth my time anymore.â You take a swig of your drink, swallow the tang down, and it mixes with the lick of heat, slowly spreading its way into your veins. Youâre trying to tame the surge of energy zipping through your body, but itâs so damn hot beneath the lights lining the bar. And the chatter buzzing around the room, coupled with the weight of Joelâs gaze, isnât fucking helping. Itâs overwhelming, the nerves and arousal taking over, lacing with the alcohol in your system.
âThat so?â His voice is a low rumble, dangerous. The corners of his lips twitch; your eyes dart down to them.Â
You set your glass down on the dark wood with a clink, and your fingers begin tracing the rim of the glass. âAnd you?â Your body is warm and humming, something churning deep in your core.
His hazel eyes slowly rake down your body, a hint of hunger in them as they pause at the hem of your skirt, barely covering the place where you need him most; your skin is on fire under the heat of his gaze, and for a moment you have to resist the urge not to pounce on him right there in a bar full of people.
His voice cuts through your reverie as he answers. âNot in the cards for me, darlinâ,â his eyes crease before he tips the glass to his lips.
âGuess we got one thing in common,â you sigh and mirror him.Â
His eyes never leave yours as he takes a sip, and your chest blooms. Black takes up the hazel hues in his eyes, full of lust, and you think back to all the times youâve had his attention; only now itâs worse because you can act on it. And maybe itâs the liquid courage in your blood. Maybe itâs some stroke of desire for revenge. Maybe itâs just that â desire. Maybe itâs because you know him. Know by all those times you racked up in your brain of longing stares and fleeting tugs of every nerve of your body.
So you think, with the very obvious throbbing in your core, with desire turning molten and pooling between your thighs that you can no longer ignore, that now is your chance; youâve got nothing holding either of you back this time.
âYou want to get out of here?â Your eyes fall down his body and bite your lip as you take in his broad form again.Â
He chuckles darkly. âCanât leave my crew, sweetheart,â he juts his chin towards an area behind you. Your body twists, and laughter threatens to bubble in your chest when you spot them. Three men, all silver-haired and scruffy beards that cover surly faces, all clad in tethered leather jackets, sit in a corner towards the back of the bar.Â
You turn back to Joel with a hint of smirk on your lips. âArenât you getting a little old to still be biking around? Shouldn't fossils be encased or padded up or something? You know as they age they don't hold up very well,â you tease.Â
He bares his teeth with a crooked grin; the corners of his eyes crease. âCareful, kiddo,â voice a low warning, but thereâs a hint of playfulness behind it.
You knock back the rest of your drink swiftly, ignoring how it burns the back of your throat. âWell, thatâs too bad,â you start. Driven by the alcohol coursing through your burning veins and the painful ache at the apex of your thighs, your left hand grabs his, rested beneath the bar, and guides it under your skirt and towards your dripping sex. He stiffens, inhaling sharply through his nose as he feels the way the wet fabric clings to the lips of your pussy. You bring your lips to the shell of his ear and drop your voice to make it more deep and velvety â more enticing. âSheâs already wet.â
You drop his hand and hop off the barstool and onto wobbly legs, your right hand looping your crossbody over your shoulder, and before your leg even brushes past his, his hand snaps out and wraps around your wrist, dwarfing it in his grasp.Â
Without another word, he tugs you behind him, past your table of friends, all too loud and too drunk celebrating the end of another work week to notice the two of you sauntering by. He drags you down the dimly lit hall, and youâre biting your bottom lip, containing the smile that threatens to spread across your face as he shoves you into the bathroom.Â
Within seconds, heâs on you, pressing into you so your back slams into the tethered wooden door. Your hands find his hair, tangling your fingers in the strands streaked with gray.
And with his mouth flush with yours, the taste of whiskey and cheap cigars is warm on your tastebuds, and you cannot get enough of it. You've dreamt of what he'd taste like for so long, and it's everything you've ever wanted. His tongue is heavy and hot as he pushes it into your mouth, swirling it around and cutting across your gums, leaving no inch of your mouth uncharted. Itâs all rushed and sloppy and hungry, and very quickly does it become clear to you that heâs wanted this â wanted you, just as much as you had from the very beginning.Â
Somewhere in the heady haze, you manage to remove your left hand from his dark curls, drifting it south behind your back to slide the greasy lock shut behind you, sealing your fate.Â
The sound of the lock clicking in place has Joel maneuvering you towards the sink, your heels scraping against the tile as the both of you drift backwards, tongues still intertwined.Â
Your hands fumble with his belt, and at the same time, your mouth skates down his neck, tongue darting out and lapping at the inked skin there. You hum at the taste of warm, salty sweat. As you try to drag the leather out from his silver buckle, you move to drop to your knees. You donât even get halfway before heâs reaching for your wrists, pulling you back up to stand. ââS much as Iâd like that kiddo, I've been waitinâ too long to get inside this cunt,â he says bluntly, and then heâs taking a step forward, trapping you against the cold ceramic. âIf mâgonna come, s'gonna be inside o' her.âÂ
Your stomach flips at his words, and you canât deny that the use of that word again makes you want to drop to your knees for him twofold. Instead, Joel drops to one of his, grunting as his denim-clad knee hits the cold tile, and itâs what he does next that manages to shatter all essence of confidence you had tonight.
Joel flicks up your skirt with one large hand while the other grips the back of one of your thighs, and one of your hands finds one of his shoulders, fingers already clinging onto him for dear life as you try to anchor yourself. Youâre throbbing for him as his hand drifts north to cup your sex through your damp panties; he tears his gaze away to peer up at you. âHow many dicks has this pussy taken since my son?âÂ
His words strike you hard, and your blood runs as cold as ice. Your breath kicks out of your lungs. That was the last thing you expected him to say. Despite the fact Joelâs eyes often lingered and his breath often wavered in your presence, he always managed to compose himself. You never imagined he'd act on those impulses.
âIâI donâtââ you blink a few times, your brain malfunctioning, trying to find the words.Â
âHow many,â he taunts, his fingers prod at your lace-covered slit, his thumb applying pressure to your clit through your underwear.Â
âIâ I donât know. I canât remember,â you whisper.
Joel sniggers. âI figured. Sheâs just a little pocket pussy for us, ainât she?â A shiver runs up your spine, and he watches you, hazel eyes glimmering in the soft yellow glow of the bathroom, gauging your reaction for a tell, a tick, something, thatâll give him a reason to stop. When you donât, his head dips down between your thighs, and his strong nose presses up against the damp stain on the front of your skimpy black thong, which was doing a rather poor job of covering your cunt. His eyes close slowly, and he inhales. Long and hard, so hard you can feel his nostrils contracting against you as he breathes in your scent. And itâs not your fault a measly whimper spills from your lips when he does so.Â
âThis all for me now?â He coaxes, his fingers strumming up and down your slit through the lace. Words fail you as you look down and find his eyes already on yours. You nod once for him.Â
âWords, darlinâ,â his voice dark, thick fingers shifting your panties aside, exposing you to the cold air and spreading your soft folds apart, toying with your wetness.Â
Oh fuck, sneaks past your lips in a whisper, and one of your arms snaps out behind you, hand wrapping around the edge of the sink. Â
He tilts his head up, and your eyes fixate on his middle finger that reads, clutch, as the tip pokes into your aching hole. "Sâthis what you wanted? You oughta ask for it, pretty girl.â
âI want you. Fuckâ I want you to fuck me, Joel.â You choke out.Â
âAttagirl,â he starts, knees cracking as he stands. âBend over ân let me see her up close this time,â he says with a smirk.Â
You obey, and turn to drop your purse beside the sink before placing your hands on the wet countertop. But your eyes donât find your own reflection in the mirror. Instead, they fall on Joelâs movements behind you and gulp down the near-pathetic excitement and nerves sizzling over you. Joelâs too entranced by the sight before him to pick up how your breath hitches in your throat when his calloused hands push your skirt over the curve of your ass and up to your waist. His sly smirk kicks into a low chuckle as he catches sight of your tattoo on your left ass cheek that reads, daddyâs girl.
You go perfectly still, and a firm hand between your shoulders pushes you forward, your upper body now parallel to the dark countertop. Your heartbeat thrums loudly in your ears, but you can still hear the low whistle he sings from behind you. And thenâ
âJesus,â he breathes as he pauses and marvels at you, his gaze shifting up and down your form, goosebumps erupting across your skin as the knuckle of his index finger traces down the small of your back, cold metal from the ring on his pinkie grazes the meat of your ass by happenstance. âPretty little thing, ainât ya?âÂ
And itâs almost like he canât believe heâs here â with you, thirty years his junior, and his sonâs ex-girlfriend, in a bar bathroom, about to ruin not only you but every other woman for himself for the rest of his life.
The liquid courage mustâve kicked into overdrive because you donât know what compels you to do it, but before you can stop yourself, you call out his nameâ
âJoel.â
His dark eyes flit upwards to meet yours in the mirror.Â
âYou gonna stand there and stare all night, or you gonna fill her up?â But the tone of your voice doesnât make it sound at all like a question, and you donât mean it to be.Â
That seems to pull him back. He huffs a laugh, shaking his head. âFuckinâ Christ, I didnât think youâd be this filthy.â
His reaction manages to bring back your confidence, and your lips curl in turn.Â
Joel doesnât waste anymore time. You feel the rough drag of denim against the back of your thighs and hear the metallic clang of his belt and the buzz of his zipper as he frees himself from the confines of his jeans. When he hooks a thick finger underneath your panties, tugging them to the side and over one cheek, you canât help but clench, and Joel definitely doesnât miss it.Â
He tuts. âNeedy little thing too,â he grips his length, thick and heavy in his hand, and lines up the blunt cockhead with your throbbing hole; it winks at him. âTiny holeâs begging for me to fuck her, ainât she? Look at her flirtinâ with me,â Joel gloats.Â
And the sane part of you wants to cringe at that, but your cunt betrays you and clenches around terrible emptiness again. Joel doesnât wait for you to respond; his eyes flicker back down to your hole, pushing the wide head of his cock inside, and that spark from earlier ignites.Â
âOh, Christ,â he exhales, his jaw falling loose and eyes going hooded as he enters your warm, wet cunt. You gasp as your own eyes fall shut at the stretch, your face twisting upwards at the sharp sting. You didnât get to look at it before, but you can feel him. Heâs big. Bigger than anything youâve ever had, and for a second youâre not quite sure heâll be able to fit. But Joel being Joel means heâs a stubborn bastard. He makes it fit. He pushes himself in, in, in, and you whine, and he groans as your pussy wraps perfectly around every inch of his thick length, sinking in like a dream.
He bottoms out inside your cunt, his tip kissing your cervix, and youâre gripping the edge of the sink so tight that if it werenât for Joel fucking you, youâd be worried if your knuckles would break the skin. âFuck, thatâs good,â he breathes, ragged and hard.Â
And it is. He feels so good. Stretching your cunt out and carving a place for himself after all this time. All the wanting and pining. Shared glances and stolen moments that you believed to be over the moment you broke up with that bastard of a son have finally led you here with him.Â
âDaddy,â pours from your lips involuntarily. Your eyes snap wide open, and you freeze. Joel draws his hips back, cock pulling out from your gaping hole and catching onto itâs head, and before you can scramble your brain for a pathetic excuse of an apology, his lips curl into a snarl, and he slams his hips forward, cock ramming into you full throttle. The force of his thrust so hard, your body jolts forward, and your pelvis collides with the sink.
He doesnât give you time to recover; Joel sets a fast, unforgiving pace, and with every strong, expert roll of his hips, the edges of your vision begin to blur. And it doesnât matter how fast he bucks into you; the size of his cock never fails to fill you up to the hilt on every long, punishing stroke. Heâs fucking loving it. And so are you. Letting him use you and yanking you back onto his cock by the thin material of your thong, hips snapping back into his like a rubber band. The air quickly fills with delicious wet sounds of your skin slapping against his, your moans and his, and the sharp clink, clink, clink, of metal rattling against you as the movement of your bodies colliding increases.Â
âDirty fuckinâ girl,â he says, voice rough with arousal. âBeen dreaminâ of this pussy since the first time I laid eyes on ya,â he pants, eyes never leaving where the two of you are connected.
Desperate whimpers and breathy moans spill from your lips, his left hand bruising on your hip. âCaught a glimpse of that pretty young pussy under your skirt. Couldnât get it out of my damn head. I thought about you nâ fucked my fist every night to that image of you in your slutty little skirt. Too fuckinâ short to cover anything.â Your cunt drools with slick with every word that spills from him; you can feel it on the tops of your inner thighs. The wet suction of your cunt around his cock getting louder and louder and louder. Itâs borderline pornographic.Â
His voice cuts through the lewd sounds. âSome nights I heard those sweet sounds you madeâfucked my fist then too. Were you fakinâ it, baby? Huh. Were you fakinâ it with him? My son ever fuck you this good?â He rambles, grip smarting your flesh.Â
Your stomach jolts. Scratch that. Thatâs the last thing you expected him to say. If your ex-boyfriendâs father fucking you wasnât going to send you spiraling, then him bringing up his own son while he fucks you dumb certainly will.Â
Your mind is abuzz; your brain has gone completely blank. Thereâs no way you could form a proper word in response, even if you tried. There isnât a single thought inside your head. Itâs too much. Too many things are happening at once. For one, heâs never been this talkative; you were lucky if you got two sentences out of him a year ago. And now heâs asking you if his son fucks as good as he does.Â
You donât answer. You canât. And heâs not expecting you to. All you can do is whimper and moan while he fucks you with abandon, the way you should have been fucked all those times by his son.
âYou donât gotta answer. I know he didnât. That boy didnât know what was good for him if it hit him til he was blue in the face.â And you moan in agreement, still not able to think of a response while his tip jabs at your most sensitive spot.Â
âSâokay, you were made to take my cock,â he grits, his ringed finger digging into your skin by the unrelenting grip on your waist. âMade to take mine, not his. Tell me, my cock bigger than his?âÂ
âDaddyââ you gasp, your cunt flutters around him, and Joel laughs a little at you, a low mocking sound that fuels the fire roiling low in your belly.Â
âCourse it is,â he murmurs. âYou were made for me. So fuckinâ pretty nâ perfect nâ â fuck â so goddamn tight. Tighter than a fleshlight, baby.â He hisses in between sharp thrusts.
âN-â you choke on your words, fresh tears pricking your eyes by the force of him fucking you so hard.Â
He clicks his tongue. âYou donât like that, baby? You tellinâ me if I say it again, she wonât fuckinâ squeeze the hell outta me?â
Your cunt answers for you, giving him exactly what he wants and fluttering around him in response.
âSâokay, you can like it. You oughta. This sloppy cuntâs gonna be my new cocksleeve. Gonna blow my load in ya, pump you so full oâme.âÂ
You squeeze painfully tight around him again and bite your bottom lip to muffle the obscene, broken moan that escapes you. You canât help but picture what Joel looks like thrusting himself into the toy. Was he using it that night? When you heard him coming with a groan of your name, was he pretending to paint your cunt instead of the inside of faux flesh? Or did he pull out and imagine covering your face in his cum? Your back arches as you push yourself up by the heels of your palms on the ceramic, your head topples back onto your neck, eyes rolling back into your skull, the walls of your cunt tensing at the thought.Â
His fingers unhook themselves from your panties and his hand finds the back of your skull, and with a firm grip, he angles your head, so you are face to face with your own depraved reflection. âLook how fuckinâ sexy you look takinâ me,â he growls.
And you do; your vision refocuses on the wrecked girl in the mirror: hair wild yet pulled back by Joelâs tight fist, lipstick stained around your swollen lips, mascara smudged by wet tears at the corners of your eyes, temples glistening with beads of sweat as youâre split wide open, perfectly filled to the brim by your ex-boyfriendâs fatherâs cock.Â
Joelâs fist tightens on your makeshift ponytail, pulling you back into him, and with your back now pressed flush to his chest, he brings his lips to your ear, his breath hot against your skin, eyes watching each other in the mirror. âYouâve got a velvet cunt, kiddo, sâdamn shame my son didnât know what to do with it.âÂ
You squeak, your body jostling and rolling with pleasure on every shift forward, the edge of the countertop bruising your hip bones. Youâre blissfully unaware of the spit drooling from your lips and dripping all over the sink faucet until Joel points it out.
âLook at you, wanted it so bad youâre fuckinâ droolinâ fâme, naughty girl,â he pants, hips snapping forward with renewed vigor. âWanted me to use you like this, huh?â
âMmm,â you mewl in response, everything beneath your navel tenses while his cock grazes the opening of your cervix on each harsh thrust.
He tuts. âAww, poor baby, you were all talk before. But you canât talk back now, huh? You all cock dumb, sâthat it? Daddy, fuckinâ ya stupid?âÂ
"So â good â Daddy,â you force a choked moan. Your cunt clamps down around him, and it burns, flames running wild, scratching away at your nerves as the fat head of his cock brushes against your g-spot again. As if he can feel it too, the snap of his hips grows more desperate. Faster. Harder. Deeper.Â
âKeep doinâ that, doinâ so good for me, kiddo. Just a little more, give it to me, come on daddyâs cock, câmon,â he rasps. Your stomach twists and your chest tightens, his cock hitting you so deep each time his hips swing, and the weight of his balls slapping wetly against your clit has you hurtling full speed towards your release.Â
âDaddy â oh fâ fuck,â your voice all broken and hoarse. Your entire body goes painfully tight, thighs quivering, and something deep within you snaps. Your eyes screw shut as the energy thrums through your blood. Your mind is a dizzying blur, white light streaking behind your eyelids, and thereâs a low ringing in your ears as your orgasm fully engulfs you.Â
"Yeah, thatâs it. Thatâs it, kiddo, there you go, let her soak me,â Joel praises as he fucks you through your high, cunt throbbing while your hips move lazily back and forth on him.Â
As your orgasm settles, your body goes limp, and your head begins to dip, but Joel tightens his grip on you, shifting your body like a ragdoll until youâre on your tiptoes, the perfect angle for him as he fucks relentlessly into you.Â
And with the blissed-out daze of the afterglow and the roaring music from the otherside of the bathroom door getting louder, you can just barely make out Joelâs low rambles of obscenities â almost like heâs mumbling to himself â and the quick, wet, smack, smack, smack of his hips against the plush of your ass as he pummels your cunt, desperate for release â as if his life depends on coming inside you.Â
He grunts and through bleary eyes, you watch him through the mirror. He looks wrecked as he chases after his high. He must feel your eyes on him because then his eyes lock with yours in the mirror, and your cunt squeezes him unconsciously. That sends him overboard. His movements become sloppy, and you feel him twitch inside you. His jaw slackens, his eyes pinching shut while his head lulls back, and a breathless chant of, oh shit, fuck thatâs it, fuck, escapes him as he comes undone.
His hands clamp, hips finally stuttering, a deep groan slipping past his lips, and then you feel the heat spreading inside you as thick spurts of his seed spill deep inside your cunt. His body falls forward over yours, his sweaty forehead falls into your shoulders, and you let him stay there as his cock continues to pulse, hips lazily rutting into you and pumping you full of his load. Your spent cunt spasms around his throbbing cock, and your wet and his, gathers at the base of his girth and trickles down his balls.Â
His hips finally come to a stop, but he doesnât pull out. Instead, his hand drops from your hair and begins rummaging through your purse. It only takes him a few seconds to find what heâs looking for. Your pen. You watch through watery lashes as he pops the cap with his thumb and brings the tip to the small of your back; your body flinches at the feeling of the cold tip.Â
As the ball of the pen drags and tugs across at your skin, for a brief moment you try to surmise what heâs writing, but it takes him too long, and the intensity of your orgasm finally catches up with you. You drop your head on your hand and wait for him to finish whatever the hell heâs drawing on your skin.Â
You feel his body shift behind you again, but itâs not until you hear the familiar sound of a low click that has you snapping your head up to the mirror.Â
Joel Miller has his phone in his hands.Â
And heâs not just doing anything with it. Heâs not scrolling through it. Heâs not opening up the contacts app. Heâs not typing on it.
You catch a bright white flash in the mirror. Heâs taking pictures of you. But not just of you. Heâs taking pictures of your wasted cunt still plugged full of his cock.Â
And for some reason â you donât move. You donât stop him. You donât turn around and snatch the phone from his grasp and call him a dirty old dog. You stay perfectly still, and you let him do what he wants. Letting him take a series of pictures.
But itâs the last few that have his lips curling into a smirk, and he begins mumbling under his breath, gawking at the mess he made of you.Â
With his phone poised in his right hand, his left drops to your left ass cheek, his fingers splay across your flesh, pulling your cheek back, and the shutter sound goes off. "Fuck, sheâs so pretty like this.âÂ
Heat blooms in your chest. No oneâs ever made you feel like this. But thereâs no room for shame when he makes you feel this warm and beautiful... and so fucking sexy.Â
And then it hits you.Â
No oneâs ever made you feel like this. Thereâs a sudden pang in your heart, tears stinging in your eyes. Youâve always known it. But you never admitted it because it never mattered. How could it? When youâve never had someone who made you feel worth their time. How could you know what you were missing out on if youâve never had it to begin with?Â
Your head tips back between your shoulders, forcing the tears back into your skull, and to keep them at bay, you redirect your attention on Joel; watch him as he presses his hips flush to your ass so heâs filled you to the hilt. With your body still trembling, you wince and close your eyes in overstimulation. Your body sags forward on the cold surface, melting into submission.
You hear a series of shutters coupled with Joelâs mutters of, Jesus, look at her, the prettiest little pussy, look at this messy little hole swallowinâ up my cock, while you feel his hand moving along the small of your back, no doubt getting different angles of the place where the two of you become one.Â
It feels like hours have passed by when Joel seems to have gotten his fill. One of his hands finds your hip again; you shiver and gasp in unison as he slowly slips himself out with a wet squelch. He pumped you so full of his release that you already feel it beginning to trickle out. You didnât think thereâd be that much of it for a man his age.
When his cockhead fully slides out from your hole, you have to fight the urge to whine at the loss of it â of him. But itâs what he does next that stops you from reveling in that; his hand quickly reaches down between your bodies, and two thick fingers catch the cum dripping out of you and push it back inside. You whimper tiredly.Â
You stay bent over the sink, and suddenly, for a very brief moment, you feel the heavy weight of his cock slap wetly against your left ass cheek, and for the last time, the camera shutters.Â
He quickly pockets his phone, and then heâs pulling your panties over the ache between your thighs, and his hands tentatively pull the skirt back down over your ass, smoothing out the rumpled fabric. You can hear the low rustling behind you â the buzz of his zipper and the clang of his belt buckle, tucking himself back into his pants.
And then Joel Miller surprises you again. He leans forward over you and places a chaste kiss to your clothed shoulder before his hands are on you, gently tugging your body upright and turning you around to face him as he murmurs a low, Let me look at ya.Â
His eyes scan over your face, grinning immensely, like he canât help being proud of himself for ruining you. And you smile bashfully in tandem as you bring a weak hand up to your face. Joel shoos your hand away and rubs his thumb under your eyes, gently wiping away your tears and smeared mascara, then doing the same to the smudged lipstick at the corners of your mouth.Â
Heâs always been rather soft with you, but itâs a stark contrast in comparison to his earlier behavior; it almost gives you whiplash thinking about it. How he fucked you so full you could feel him in your chest, the stream of profanities he cursed under his breath, moaning the dirtiest things â comparing himself to his son while inside you, taking filthy pictures as evidence of what the two of you have done together, then cleaning you up like itâs second nature to him. All of it was filthy. Heâs filthy. But there was always a softness to him, and thereâs no doubt about it in this moment.
You take the opportunity to mirror him and caress away the lipstick that stained his lips from your kiss, you smile and he sighs at the contact. His thumb swiftly pads over your bottom lip, his gaze lands on your lips, a sort of hesitance, perhaps deciding if he wants to kiss you again. Then, his thumb catches on your plush bottom lip. Joelâs lips twitch, his eyes go dark as he drags the flesh of your bottom lip down, eyeing something he knows he almost missed. He scoffs slightly and shakes his head in near-disbelief. You smirk knowing exactly what heâs reacting to.Â
His entire face blossoms with cherry red as he does another once over on the black ink inside your mouth.Â
âAngel, my ass,â he mutters under his breath before wetting his lips. Already hungry for more.Â
He tilts your chin upwards and leans forward to kiss you. Itâs softer, slower this time, but of course, he still nips gently at your bottom lip, and at the same time, he slips his free hand down between the two of you once more. It moves beneath the hem of your skirt, fingers shoving your panties to the side, the pulp of his middle finger pushing through your puffy folds and into your dripping hole, until the black ink that reads, brake, is entirely sheathed inside your worn cunt, making sure his come stays where it belongs. You whimper against his lips, bucking into his hand.
âKeep that in there, fâme,â he mutters, his hot breath fanning over your lips. âWant you thinkinâ oâme when it drips outta ya tonight.âÂ
You whine faintly when Joel removes his hand. He brings it up to his face, and his tongue darts out to glide across the tip of his digit, licking his finger clean of your wet and his, all while keeping his eyes on yours the whole time.Â
Thereâs a long beat of silence between you, and then he drops his hand, pulling away. Your heart falls, already missing the warmth emanating from his touch.
âWe oughta get back before people start looking for us,â he murmurs as he steps back. You smile softly and nod. Youâre not sure youâll see him again. And you donât have the heart to ask him, nor do you have the strength to handle it if he rejects your offer. You have nothing else to give.Â
You love how he made you feel, but your chest twinges â one that twists deep. And no matter how much you try to quell that deep-seated fear, it never truly leaves you. A little voice in the back of your mind that repeats on a loop like a broken record, telling you: Heâll break your heart. They all do. But he canât hurt you if you donât let him. You resist the urge to turn and run. And instead, you turn to glance back in the mirror, sure to tame your disheveled appearance, giving Joel a chance to leave before you, slipping back into someone from your past.
He makes his way to the door, sliding the lock open; his hand curls around the handle but pauses before pulling it open. He turns to face you. âYou okay?â he asks.Â
It shocks you. Itâs more than his son ever did. Certainly means more to you after heâd ask, Was it good, after coming in you before you even got started. Everything Joel did tonight is more than his son ever did; asking you questions all night and listening attentively while you answered them â whether it was with the hope of fucking you or not â doesn't matter. You fought tooth and nail for a sliver of his sonâs attention, but with Joel, he just fucking gave it to you.Â
You do your best to ignore that gnawing feeling of fear, clawing its way up your chest by the only way you know how; you press your lips to Joelâs, pushing your tongue into his awaiting mouth, and licking along the rim of his teeth. A strong hand curls around your jaw, fighting for dominance over the kiss, but you donât let him for long, though. Reluctantly, you pry yourself off him, but not before Joelâs teeth softly graze your earlobe, nipping the flesh there.
You flash him a quick smile, looping the strap of your purse over your shoulder. âPerfect.âÂ
He smiles softly at that, eyes dancing across your face. âYeah,â he whispers and moves to the side, letting you step out first and following you out.Â
You head straight to the booth where your group of four awaits you, but not before peering over your shoulder and seeing Joel stalk towards his crew. You smile to yourself and tuck a lock of hair behind your ear as you approach your friends. As you shimmy in beside one of them, they ask where you were, and their brows pinch when you mumble, I was feeling a little dizzy. Which isnât a total lie, but no one presses you for more, and youâre glad they donât.Â
Itâs not until your friends start collecting their belongings and announce they want to check out the new bar a few blocks down the street when you feel the weight of tonightâs actions sinking into you. Youâre about ready to call it a night; your eyes are heavy, your brain is still fuzzy, and your body still has not recovered from Joel railing you.Â
You mull over sitting in the booth until the car you plan to order shows up to take you home. But the thought of waiting around in Joelâs presence makes your chest tighten. You donât want to find out if heâll be like the rest of them. Something to scratch an itch, and then wiping you from memory. That urge to flee loops back, and your legs force you to stand.
Collectively, you amble through the bar, still bubbling with energy, and as you make your way to the exit, you can feel the heat of a stare on you. You donât need to turn to know who it is; his broad form ghosts along the edges of your periphery.
You walk against that pull you feel towards him, ache festering, skin burning, and bones grating with every heavy step, your eyes locked on the door like a missile to a target, not letting your eyes wander over to his booth, trying to keep whatâs left of your dignity. Resisting. Resisting. Resisting.Â
Lucas steps out first, holding the door open for another group of younger twenty-somethings as they saunter into the bar. While you hang back, you quickly mumble over your shoulder to Nell that youâre thinking of heading home. Worry cuts across her face, and she extends an offer, At least let me drive you home, hun.Â
Your answer is cut off by the chime of your phone in your purse. You still and fumble for it and see a message from Mr. Miller. You had forgotten you never deleted his number.Â
Holding your phone close to your chest, cautiously away from your friendâs curious eyes, you click on the notification.
Heâd sent you two of the pictures he happily took at the top of the hour with a message that reads, Look damn sexy on my cock, kiddo.Â
Your mouth falls open in a gasp, and pride swells in your chest as you glance at the first picture: Joel plugging your used cunt full of his length, his graying pubic hairs drenched and the base of his shaft gleaming with a white ring of creamy release. Your eyes flit upwards, and you finally get a chance to read the dark permanent lines heâd written on your skin.
Joel had crossed out the latter half of your tattoo on your ass cheek. It now reads, daddyâs fleshlight, in sloppy penmanship. With his grip porcelain white, the cross on his thumb makes an appearance as his digit digs into your hip at the corner of your tattoo. Your eyes drift further north, and above the globe of your ass, the small of your back reads, mine.Â
Your thumb swipes across the screen to the second picture. With his cock poised in his hand, he had pressed the swollen mushroom head, only a hairsbreadth beneath the ink on the plush flesh of your ass â black ink shiny with a pearly film, he had smeared it in your mixed juices. Your cunt clenches at the images â at his absence, missing the warm, thick stretch of him. And suddenly, you feel his cum beginning to dribble out of you and pool into the gusset of your already ruined thong.Â
When you donât answer. The message bubble appears.
A beat, then two, and thenâ
Thereâs a place for you here.
You swallow down the twinge, the ache, press your thighs shut around emptiness, and feel another slight trickle escape your lower lips when your pussy releases more of his cum. You lock your phone and look back up at Nell in front of you. You feign nonchalance and wave her off, telling her you canât go home just yet. Tell her that you received a few more requests from your boss and you, Donât wanna take work home.Â
She asks how youâll get home, you lie, and swiftly mention that you just saw Mr. Miller across the bar and that heâll drive you home. Another tiny white lie. Your place is a solid halfway point from the bar to his house. And when she asks if youâre sure youâll be okay alone, her hand gently squeezing your arm, brows furrowed with worry, bless her heart, your gaze follows that pull like a magnet and lands on Joel.Â
Heâs already watching you.Â
Your eyes lock with his, one hand resting to the side while the other tips the glass heâd been nursing towards you, winking as he takes a short sip of amber liquid.Â
And thereâs no pang in your chest. No urge to flee. Just the warmth of his gaze that in any second now will radiate through his touch, turning your bones to ash.Â
i was wondering if you could write smth with anxious stressed out reader and dom joel, like the readers having a rlly bad day and when she gets into these moods she needs to feel pain in order to feel grounded. like rlly rough sex to take her mind off things and push her limits, but then emotional aftercare where joel holds her and lets her cry into his chest.
i hope this made sense!

A/N: Anon, Iâm so sorry for the wait! I absolutely loved your idea and since dom!Joel is one of my favorite things to write, I couldnât resist. Here it is, and I really hope you enjoy!
âCâmon, over my lap now,â he murmurs. âLetâs sort you out.â
Itâs never a punishment with Joel. It never has been.
When his voice drops low, his eyes darken and his hands grow rougher, you know itâs never about his pleasure, discipline, or itâs never even about sex.
Itâs more about you.
About the way he sees you when youâre at your most vurnableâwhen the fluorescent lights above you make your head spin, when even the sound of someoneâs voice scrapes against your skin like its sandpaper.
And on those days, Joel knows exactly how to hold you. How to ground you. How to take the weight off your shoulders and carry it himself.
âAss up.â
Youâre on his lapânaked, shivering, a flicker of nervousness running through you. The rough texture of his jeans against your skin is grounding, something tangible to cling to while your head spins in a haze full of chaos.
The belt Joel already pulled out sits heavy on his hand, and itâs already making your stomach twist. But you know, Joel would never hurt you. (Only push you to your limits.)
âYou ready?â he asks, voice rough.
You nod, but a soft whimper escapes before you can stop it.
âSâokey. Iâm gonna take care of you, baby.â He says as an answer. âJust use your words, yea?â
You nod. âYes, sir.â
âThatâs right,â he murmurs. Atta girl.â
You brace yourself, hearing the leather in his hand moving. And before you can register itâ
CRACK.
The first strike lands across your ass, sharp and sudden. The sting blooms instantly, hot and biting, while you already feel a redness forming on the skin. You gasp, your fingers curling into the cushion.
âOne,â you whisper, voice trembling.
Joelâs hand presses between your shoulder blades, firm and grounding.
CRACK.
The second comes a little lower, the leather striking into already sensitive skin. You flinch, a soft cry escaping.
âTwo.â
âStay still,â Joel demands. âIf you squirm, iâll start over.â
You nod quickly, jaw clenched.
CRACK.
The third lands across the tops of your thighs. You suck in a breath, blinking hard against the tears pricking in your eyes.
âThree.â
Joel leans down, his voice a low growl in your ear. âThatâs it. Let it hurt. Let it take up space. You donât need to carry all that shit anymore.â
With the eighth, your thoughts begin to settle. The sting is still sharp, still harsh, but beneath it comes finally a quiet slownessâan unexpected calm that spreads through you.
Joelâs voice is softer now, but still firm. âYouâre almost there. Just breathe. Iâve got you.â
Nine. You gasp again, tears slipping down your cheeks, but you donât fight it. You let it burn, while feeling Joels hands all over your body.
His hand cups the back of your neck, thumb stroking gently. âOne more. Youâre almost home.â
CRACK.
The final strike lands, and your breath leaves you in a shudder. The tears come freely now, not from pain, but from release.
âTen,â you whisper, voice breaking. And he letâs the belt fall down.
Joel doesnât move muchâhe letâs you cry with just one hand stroking slow, grounding circles over your back, the other resting heavy on your hip.
And after minutes of crying it all out, he leans down, brushing your hair away.
âWeâre not done yet, babygirl.â
You whimper softly, but you donât pull away. You canât. You donât want to. You know what comes.
Joelâs hand slides down your spine, taking his sweet time. âYouâre gonna take me now. Gonna let me fuck you the way you need.â
Second thing he always does. Fucking you so hard that you canât even think straight anymore. Your body goes limp, your mind blank. Every thrust knocks the breath out your lungs, every sound you make gets swallowed by the rhythm he sets. You donât speak. You donât beg. You just take it. And he gives itâalways relentless, grounding, like heâs trying to fuck the chaos right out of your head.
You shiver, your body already aching for him.
He shifts beneath you, and you hear the unmistakable sound of his zipper being undone. Heâs unbuckling his pants, but heâs not rushing. Heâs letting you feel every second of it.
One arm then wraps around your waist, the other gripping your wrists. In one smooth motion, he lifts youâoff of his lap, but just for a second. You barely have time to catch your breath before heâs guiding you forwards, his hand firm at the small of your back.
âDown,â he murmurs.
He lays you out flat on the couch, chest to cushions, your legs stretched behind you. The fabric is cool against your skin, your cheek pressed to the armrest. You feel him move behind youâthe dip of the cushions, the heat of his body as he climbs over you, one knee on either side of your thighs.
Then he takes your wristsâboth of themâand pulls them behind your back, pinning them there with one strong hand.
âYouâre gonna stay just like this,â he murmurs, his hand smoothing over your lower back. âFace down. Hands where I left âem. I want you open for me.â
You nod, breath catching.
He presses a kiss between your shoulder blades. âYouâre gonna take every inch, and youâre not gonna run from it. You hear me?â
âYes, sir,â you whisper.
âGood girl.â
He shifts behind you, and you feel the heat of him, the weight of his body as he lines himself up. One hand slides under your belly, lifting your hips just a little more. The other slides between your thighs, fingers brushing over your foldsâand he pauses.
âNot wet enough yet,â he mutters, more to himself than to you. âThatâs alright. Iâll take care of it.â
You hear the sound of him spitting, then feel the warm slickness between your legs. His fingers follow, spreading it over your folds, brushing your clit, nudging against your hole.
âThere we go,â he murmurs, rubbing it in with practiced ease. âGotta make sure youâre ready for me.â
You shiver under his touch, the heat building low in your belly.
âNow,â he mutters, voice like gravel, âyou take it.â
And then he drives in.
One deep, brutal thrust that knocks the air from your lungs. You cry out, your whole body jolting forward, but his grip holds you firm. You canât move. You can only feel.
He pulls backâand slams into you again. And again.
Your body reacts before your mind can catch up. Your back arches, then collapses. Your thighs shake. Your breath comes in ragged sobs, each one punched out of you with every thrust.
âJoelââ you gasp, but itâs not a protest. Itâs a plea.
Your body is burningâraw from the spanking, stretched from the way heâs holding you, and now pulsing with the rhythm heâs set.
He leans over you, his chest brushing your back, his breath hot against your ear.
âDonât fight it,â he growls. âLet me in. Let me fuck you open.â
His hand leaves your hip, then slides between your thighs, and finds your clit. He rubs slow, tight circles, the contrast making you cry out again.
âYouâre gonna come for me,â he says. âRight here. While Iâm deep inside you.â
It hits fastâsharp and overwhelming. Your body locks up, back arching, a cry tearing from your throat as everything inside you snaps loose at once. You donât even have time to think about it.
You sob, the pleasure too much, too sharpâand he leans in, his chest brushing your back, his breath warm against your ear. âGood girl,â he whispers. âYou take it so well. Just like that.â
He keeps movingâslow, deep thrusts that draw out every last tremor. His fingers still on your clit, but heâs gentle now, coaxing you through the aftershocks.
âIâve got you,â he says. âYouâre safe. Iâm right here.â
Youâre trembling beneath him, your body limp, breath catching in your throat. The last waves of your orgasm fade, while Joel doesnât move away. He doesnât pull out. Just stays thereâdeep inside you, warm and all steady.
Then you feel him shift, just slightly. His hand slides up your neck, giving a little squeeze.
âLetâs give you another one, hmm?â His voice is soft now, coaxing. Almost sweet. âYouâre already letting it all goâŠso good for me.â
You could cry, but his hips already start to move againâfaster, deeper thrusts that make your breath hitch.
A sob slips out before you can stop it. But itâs not really from pain. Itâs from everything. From letting go finally.
âJoelââ
Itâs barely a whimper anymore.
He leans in, his chest warm against your back, his hand still wrapped around your wrists.
âShhh,â he murmurs, lips brushing your ear. âI know, baby. I know.â
His thrusts stay quick, steady, coaxing. Letting you feel every inch, every pulse, every breath.
âYouâre doing so good,â he says, voice thick with something softer now. âJust let me take care of you.â
Each thrust lands with purpose, pushing you forwards into the cushions, your wrists still pinned behind your back. You sob, your body already too sensitive, too rawâbut he doesnât let up.
âMhm, there we go,â he murmurs, âGive it to me. One more.â
You sob his name, and he hushes youâsoft, steady.
âI know, baby. I know. Youâre doing so good.â
His hips snap harder now, the sound of skin on skin filling the room, your body caught in the rhythm of himâhelpless, held, and completely his.
âJust one more,â he whispers against your ear, his voice low and tender now. âYouâve got it in you. Let me see it.â
And then it hits.
Your body locks in tight, every muscle seizing as the wave crashes over you. You cry outâhis name, a sob, a sound you canât control as tears start to spill hot down your cheeks. Itâs too much, too deep, too consuming, and you break under him completely.
Joel coos at you, holding your wrists gently, pressing his chest to your back. âIâve got you, baby.â
His grip on your wrists loosens, then falls away completely. His hand slides down, steady and sure, until his fingers find your clit. He doesnât press hardâjust slow, tender circles that make you gasp, prolonging the shudders rippling through you.
âEasy now,â he murmurs, his chest heavy against your back. âJust ride it out. Itâs okey.â
Overstimulated, tears spilling as the pleasure stretches on longer than you thought you could bear.
âThatâs it⊠good girl. Let it all go.â
And while he soothes you, his hips keep movingâslower now, to chase his own release, but never rushing yours.
Then, he groans low, burying himself deep as he comes inside youâspurt after spurt, filling you to the brim.
And when he softens, he slips out of you then slowly, careful not to startle, and his hand lingers on your skinâgentle strokes down your hip, your thigh, grounding you.
Thatâs when he hears it. The muffled cries you try to swallow, the sobs pressed into the cushion.
He leans closer, his voice low and soft.
âOh, babygirlâŠâ
In one smooth motion, he gathers you up, lifting you from the couch as if you weigh nothing. He settles back, pulling you into his lap, wrapping his arm firmly around your waist.
You bury your head into his chest, the tears spilling freely now. He doesnât hush them, doesnât rush them. He just holds youâbroad palm rubbing slow circles on your back, lips brushing your hairline, his heartbeat steady beneath your ear.
âIâve got you,â he whispers. âLet it out. Youâre safe here.â
And you cry it out against him, the storm inside you finally begins to quietâanchored by the strength of your Joelâs arms and the softness of his voice.

Summary: Joel found you on a quiet evening when the chapel was empty, save for the flickering candlelight and the faint scent of incense clinging to the air. You were curled up on one of the wooden pews, arms folded beneath your head, chest rising and falling in the steady rhythm of sleep.
He cleared his throat, but you didnât stir. He hesitated before reaching out, tapping your shoulder. âMiss?â His voice came softer than he expected. âYou canât sleep here.â
"Father, do you always wake up strangers like this?"
Your voice was thick with sleep, eyes blinking against the dim glow of the chapelâs candlelight. The air smelled of old wood, wax, and something faintly metallic, like rain on stone. You looked young like this, your face soft, but Joel knew better. You shouldn't be older than thirty.
"You canât sleep here," he repeated.
Joel stood over you, stiff-backed, his fingers still hovering near your shoulder from where heâd tapped you awake. He shouldnât have noticed the way your legs stretched across the pew, the way your blouseâtoo sheer for a place like this, shifted as you moved, leaving no place to imagination.
"Didnât know God locked His doors at night," you mused, rubbing at your eyes.
Joel exhaled sharply. Lord, give me patience.
"This isnât a shelter," he said. "If you need a placeâ"
"I'm not homeless" Your tone was firm, final. But there was something else in your voice too, something he couldnât quite place, but it hinted sadness.
The world outside was changing. Women werenât quiet anymore. They werenât soft in the way people in towns like this expected them to be. And yet, there was something about you that didnât fit the mold of rebellion either. You werenât a girl searching for trouble. You were a woman who had already met it.
"I just got into town," you admitted after a beat, glancing toward the stained-glass windows, dark now with the night. "Didnât know where else to go."
Joel studied you, his chest tightening. "Are you in trouble?"
A small, humorless laugh left you. "Depends on what you call trouble."
Silence filled the chapel, thick and unmoving. The rain had stopped, leaving only the distant hum of the highway beyond the hills.
"You shouldnât be here," he said finally. But his voice had lost its authority, had softened just enough that he felt the weight of it settle in his own bones.
Because the longer he stood there, the clearer it became.
You werenât just a woman passing through.
You were trouble to his faith.
And trouble, he knew, never left quietly.
And worse, he couldnât ignore the way, for the first time in a long time, he wasnât sure if devotion could save him.
series summary: you become involved with joel millerâthe father of the bride. he was meant to be your dirty little secret to get you through the wedding festivities, but falling for him wasn't part of the plan.
i had an idea where reader is new to jackson and needs a place to stay. ellieâs recently moved out and into joelâs garage, so that makes joels house the only one with a room to spare. so tommy talks joel into letting her live with him while they get a house fixed up for her. reader struggles to adapt to jackson, skittish and unaccustomed to the luxuries of the commune. but joel canât deny he thinks sheâs beautiful, and feelings develop as he slowly gets her to open up and vice versa :â) - đ
HI MY LITTLE LOVE BUG đâŁïž this is so cute you always have such wholesome, cute things <3333
still working through the asks, you guys!! have to update both of my series so thatâs why the requests are taking longer than i would like!!! iâm so sorry :(((((((
summary; joel gets used to having someone else live with him.
work count: 3.1k-ish genre: domestic fluff
note: eeek! im so sorry these requests are coming out so late!! love writing fluffy joel, love writing joel in general and to be so honest, i miss joel </3 anyways đ i hope you love this!!!!
He didnât plan on the house feeling different just because you set your bag down in it. Joel told himself that when Tommy nudged you over the thresholdââjust a week or two, brother, âtil the house crew gets her walls upâânothing about his routine had to change. Youâd take the spare room, heâd keep the coffee strong, and Ellieânow proud queen of the converted garageâwould flit in and out with the chaotic energy of an orchard of sparrows.
But the first night you were there, after the bowls were washed and Ellie had tramped back out to the garage with her lantern bobbing, Joel lay on his back and stared at the ceiling. Through the old ductwork he could hear you in the spare room: the soft slide of a drawer, the whisper of sheets tugged into place, a quiet curse when the mattress squeaked. Your lifeâsmall, careful, and newârustled gently in the bones of his home.
He turned onto his side and tried to be stubborn about it. The house was the house. Heâd survived silence for years; he could survive the sound of someone breathing on the other side of it.
Except it wasnât surviving. The house feltâthis embarrassed him even in the darkâalive. He squeezed his eyes shut and listened anyway.
â â â
You woke sore from the old habit of sleeping like a braced fist: shoulders tense, jaw locked, one ear tuned to danger. Morning in Jackson was a strange miracleâa kettle hissed somewhere, horses snorted, someone laughed in the street for no reason at all. Laughter used to mean you were about to lose something. Here, it meant⊠ordinary. Ordinary was its own kind of terrifying.
You padded into the kitchen. Joel stood at the counter, poured coffee into two chipped mugs without looking, then slid one toward the empty spot at the table.
âFor you,â he said, like you were a problem heâd already decided to solve.
You wrapped your hands around the warmth. âThanks.â
He nodded. A pause stretched between you. If youâd been anywhere else, someone wouldâve pushed at itâasked where you were from, how you made it this far, what youâd traded, who youâd lost. Joel didnât. He just took his mug, leaned a hip against the counter, and let you drink in the quiet. You found yourself watching him watch himself not stare at you. His throat worked, the knot of it shifting as he swallowed. You had the sudden, ridiculous thought that you could count the years on him like rings on a tree and still not find the center.
When Ellie burst in, the quiet folded around her like it wanted to keep her. âMorning, roommates,â she chirped, snatching a crust of toast. âI see heâs given you The Mug. Itâs the nice one. Donât let him pretend it isnât.â
Joel didnât look up. âIt ainât ânice.â Itâs a mug.â
âSure,â she said sweetly. âAnd your grumpy face is just how your face looks.â
He lifted his eyes to you then, and the corner of his mouth tilted. A private smile. Small, like a secret. It sparked warm in your chest. You blew on your coffee and tried not to show it.
His hands remembered the work even when his head didnât want the company. That afternoon, Joel gathered kindling in the backyard. Heâd promised Maria heâd drop some at the schoolhouse after lunch, but then Tommy waylaid himââYou check on her? She eat? She doinâ okay?ââand Joel had half a mind to tell his brother to let a grown woman breathe.
But when he came back through the gate with the armful of wood, he saw you on the porch steps, elbows on your knees, staring at the lamplight strung across Main Street like it might vanish if you blinked too long. You didnât startle when the gate creaked. That was new.
He set the wood down and sank beside you, careful not to crowd. Up close, he could see youâd braided your hair to one side, a quick, neat plait that looked like it had been done a thousand times in the dark with cold fingers.
âToo loud?â he asked.
You tipped your chin toward the town. âToo⊠soft.â
He huffed. âSoft gives some folks hives.â
You smiled without teeth. âYou?â
âIâve been itchy a long time,â he said. âJacksonâs a good rash.â
You laughed, bright and surprised. The sound pried something open in him. He had a sudden urge to gather the laugh, put it somewhere safe, and dole it out only when the world got mean.
âThank you,â you said, quieting again.
âFor what?â
âFor not asking.â
He watched your hands knot and unknot. âWhen you want to tell it, you will. And when you donât, you wonât.â
âYou make it sound easy.â
âIt ainât,â he said, and you looked at him like heâd given you permission to breathe.
He looked away first. His palms were dusty. He rubbed them clean on his jeans and thought about asking if your room was too cold at night, if the draft under your window had a mean whistle. Heâd noticed you tucking your blanket under your shoulder; he wanted to fix that. He wanted, annoyingly, to fix everything.
âWindow sticks,â he said instead, nodding toward the side of the house. âBeen mean since last winter. I got a kit. If you want, you can help me patch it.â
Something like shy pride warmed your face. âI can do that,â you said. âI meanâyeah. I can help.â
â â â
You held the plastic steady while Joel smoothed the tape, fingers strong and careful. The two of you worked in silence firstâthe good kind, where someone elseâs breath keeps you from getting lost in your own.
When his knuckles brushed yours, he pulled back too fast. You looked up. He had the expression of a man whoâd just surprised himself with the softness of something he wanted. You were no fool. You hadnât come this far without learning how to read men. But Joel was⊠difficult. He had the posture of a no and the patience of a yes. You liked that more than you should.
âEllie says sheâs got a test tomorrow,â you said, peeling a strip of tape with your nail. âShe pretended she didnât care. Then she listed every question sheâs worried will be on it.â
A fond line carved his cheek. âTalks big.â
You stuck the tape down, smoothing it with your thumb. âShe likes it when youâre listening.â
âI always listen,â he said, like it was a promise. Then, softerâto you, not to the roomââEven when I shouldnât.â
Heat crawled to your throat. The tape unraveled crooked in your hand, and he reached to steady it. Your fingers met, held, let go.
In that brief press, you felt the years youâd been without the luxury of longing. Thereâd been want, alwaysâthe kind that knotted your belly when food was scarce or men got unkindâbut longing was a gentle beast you hadnât fed in a long time. It lifted its head now.
âGood,â Joel said finally, palm flat over the last strip, voice rough. âShould hold.â
âFeels warmer already,â you said.
He nodded once. âIâll put a rug under your door. Block that draft.â
âYou donât have toââ
âI know,â he said. âI want to.â Something slipped. Not all the way. Just enough for air to get in.
Ellie, traitor that she was, saw it before either of you would speak it. At dinner she told a story about a kid in town whoâd tried to trade a handmade comic book for a cinnamon roll. âI almost bought it for him,â she said, mouth full. âBut I didnât have anything worth trading except Joelâs old flannel and thatâs basically a family heirloom.â
Joel snorted. âYou ainât tradinâ my flannel for a cinnamon roll.â
âOkay, so if it had frostingââ
âStill no.â
You hid your smile in your cup. Ellieâs eyes flicked between you and Joel, sharp as a hawk. âYou two are hilarious,â she announced. âLike a grumpy married couple who forgot to tell themselves.â
Joelâs spoon paused midair. âEat your stew.â
âThatâs what Iâm doing, husband,â she said primly, and you choked. Joel gave her a look that wanted to be stern and failed by a mile. She grinned at you, wicked and thrilled. âHeâs nicer âcause youâre here. Donât let that go to your head.â
Your heart did its own ridiculous thing, a hopeful stutter. Joelâs jaw twitched. He didnât deny it.
Later, when she stomped out to the garage, Joel took the dishes from your hands. âYou donât have toââ
âI know,â you said, echoing him. âI want to.â
His eyes warmed. You worked at the sink shoulder to shoulder, the rhythm easy. Outside, the town hummed. When the lights across the street flickered off one by one, you felt something loosen inside youâthe day leaving without teeth.
Joel dried the last bowl and set it carefully in the cupboard. He stood too close. He didnât move away.
âThanks for the window,â you said.
âMm,â he said, as if words were a fragile thing he could shatter if he moved too fast with them. âAnytime.â
You wanted to ask if heâd wait up when you were late from patrol tomorrow. You wanted to tell him youâd wait up for him too. Instead you dried your hands and said good night, and he pressed his palm flat against the counter like he had to hold himself where he stood.
â â â
He didnât mean to wait up. Heâd told himself he wouldnât. You had Mariaâs route and a decent partner; youâd be fine. The smart thing would be bed, the smarter thing would be sleep. Instead, when the hour slipped past comfortable, Joel found himself at the front window with a candle guttering behind him. He told his reflection to cut it out. His reflection lifted a shoulder and looked stubborn.
Footsteps. Your shadow slid up the walk. He blew the candle out and stepped back, pretending. He was halfway to the kitchen when the door opened.
âHey,â you breathed, surprised. âYouâre up.â
âCouldnât sleep,â he lied.
You stamped snow off your boots, cheeks bitten red. He took your coat before you could wrestle with the buttons. The fabric was cold, then warm where your shoulder had been. He hated the part of his brain that noticed that. He hung the coat by the fire anyway, like it had always belonged on his peg.
âEverything go okay?â he asked.
âFine,â you said, and thenâbecause youâd been practicing the bravery of small truthsââI kept thinking about the light in the window.â
He looked at you for too long. âYeah?â
âIt was nice,â you said, suddenly shy. âKnowing someone was awake.â
His chest answered before his mouth did. Iâll be awake. He swallowed the vow. âIâll keep a candle on if you want me to.â
You nodded. âI want you to.â
There was a hush where a hundred other things wanted to live. He could feel them crowding the edges of his mouth. He let none of them through. Instead he folded a blanket over the back of the chair nearest the fire and set a mug on the mantle, as if youâd be back in this room tomorrow and the day after and the day after that, reaching for warmth that had been poured for you.
When Tommy came by the next afternoonââJust checkinâ! Not meddlinâ!ââhe leaned on the doorjamb and let out a low whistle.
âFeels good in here,â he said. âDidnât know a man could domesticate that fast.â
Joel rolled his eyes. âGet outta my house.â
Tommy grinned past him, softening when he saw you at the table with a pencil tucked behind your ear, poring over a list from the house crew. âThey treating you right? You need anything, you tell me. And if my brother gives you troubleââ
âI wonât,â Joel said too quick.
ââyou tell me that too.â Tommy winked. âWeâll straighten him out.â
âIâm good,â you said, eyes flicking to Joel. âHeâs been⊠kind.â
The word landed heavy and careful. Joel pretended it didnât make his hands restless. After Tommy left, he found excuses to keep near youâtightened the screws on a chair that didnât squeak, oiled the front door hinges that only sometimes stuck, swept the same patch of floor twice. The truth kept trying to stand up inside him. He kept a boot on it.
â â â
The power dipped with the storm that week, lights guttering to shadows. Ellie grumbled her way to the garage with a lantern and a blanket wrapped like a cape around her shoulders. âIf the roof leaks, Iâm moving into your bed,â she warned you. âJoel can sleep on the floor.â
âThis my house or yours?â Joel asked the air.
âOurs,â she shot back, and vanished into the snow.
Joel struck a match and lit a candle on the dining table. Flame turned his face to bronze. You hovered at the doorframe, unwilling to cross some invisible line youâd drawn for yourselfâdistance was safe; closeness was a luxury youâd never had change for.
He nodded to the chair across from him. âSit. Take the candle up when you go.â
You sat. The candleâs small circle of light made a world you could manage. The storm scratched at the windows and retreated. âIâve never slept with a candle,â you said. âFelt like inviting trouble.â
He tilted his head. âTrouble donât need a candle.â
âI know,â you whispered. âBut light makes you visible.â
âNot here,â he said, voice low and certain as a bell at night. âYouâre safe.â
The words shouldnât have been enough to make your eyes sting, but they were. You nodded like that could keep the feeling from spilling over. He didnât look away. Joel never looked away from the hard things.
âDo me a favor,â he said after a moment.
âWhat?â
âIf you wake and it feels wrong, knock on my door.â
The idea of knockingâof there being a door you could knock on, and a man behind it who would always answerânearly undid you. You looked at his hands on the table: broad, scarred, steady. A good pair of hands to call for.
âOkay,â you said. Your voice was so soft he had to lean to catch it. âI will.â
He nodded, like a contract had been signed. He blew the candle lower, and you took it upstairs. Later, in the tender dark, you listened to the house shift, to the wind slip along the eaves, to the near sound of a door opening down the hall. Not yours. His. You pictured him standing in his doorway, checking for your light, and felt something bright turn toward him inside your chest, like a flower looking for morning.
It happened on a Thursday with no special name. Your patrol returned early, snow hissing like static on your coat. Joel was at the table, maps spread, pencil caught behind his ear, the same practical neatness of you. He set the pencil down when you came in, as if heâd just been waiting for his hands to be free.
You sank in front of the fire without shrugging off your coat. He stepped behind you and worked the buttons, gentle with the stiff leather. You let him. The warmth of his knuckles ghosted your throat for half a second and made your skin go hot under the cold.
âEasy,â he murmured. âGot it.â
You turned your head. For a fragment of a second, the old fear flaredâdonât owe, donât needâbut it evaporated under how he was looking at you. Not like a thing heâd take, but a thing heâd keep safe if you handed it over.
âThank you,â you said, and this time your voice didnât flinch.
His eyes were a dark honey in the firelight. Something moved thereâthe slow, tired animal of longing climbing the last ridge into day. He cleared his throat, as if to break his own spell. âAinât no trouble, darlinâ,â he said.
The word landed low in you and bloomed. He felt it tooâyou could see it in the minute give of his jaw, the way his shoulders loosened as if the room had finally admitted what it had been holding up for weeks.
You could have let the moment pass. You could have stood, made tea, moved your body around the feeling until it got tired and fell asleep on the rug. But you had promised yourself small braveries, and this was one.
âJoel?â you said.
He held very still. âMm.â
âI like it here.â
He exhaled slowly, like the air had been trapped for a long time in a tight place. âYeah.â
âI like you here,â you said, a confession wrapped in a joke that wasnât a joke at all.
A soft, shocked smile cut through his rough. He glanced down, shook his head once like he couldnât quite believe his luck was this simple. When he looked back at you, the caution was still thereâhe was a man who didnât jump without checking the iceâbut there was something else, too. Permission.
âThen stay,â he said. âAs long as you want.â
The storm threw a handful of snow at the window, as if to applaud. Ellie yelped faintly from the garageââIâm fine!ââand the two of you sat in the small, bright circle of the fire with the wild understanding that youâd just said something bigger than the words youâd used.
You didnât kiss. Not yet. You didnât have to. The room had changed shape around the both of you: same walls, same chairs, a new place to belong.
Later, you climbed the stairs with the candle cupped in your hand, and Joel watched your light move along the hallway, steady and sure. He stood at the bottom and kept watch until the flame settled on your nightstand and stayed. He pressed his palm to the banister the way he always didâinventory, tally, youâand went to his room with a chest so full it almost hurt.
In the dark, he lay awake and listened for you. Beside the thin wall, your breath evened out, slow and safe, like rain after a long dry. He shut his eyes and smiled into his pillow, a small, unguarded thing that nobody had to see to be true.
He didnât need the candle to know where you were. Heâd be awake if you knocked. Heâd be awake even if you didnât.

joel miller was a weak man.
not physically, no. he was still strong despite his age, easily able to lift and carry a couple hundred pounds in a days work. his knees might crack when he bends them, and he may sleep with a back ache for the rest of his life, but he got the job done.
now when it came to you, that was a different story.
joel wasnât stupid. he knew you had a thing for him. he could tell by the tone in your voice, the way you would drag out your words on purpose so that they lingered longer. your conversations with him always ended with a bite of your lip, the corners of your mouth twitching to solidify that you knew what you were doing. he supposed it was a little school girl crush, nothing to worry about as long as he didnât entertain it. and he didnât, truly.
but you were persistent. the more he pushed you away, the more you pulled closer. wanting a man that you shouldnât gave you a rush of adrenaline, the kind you continued to crave and never left satisfied. it buzzed in your veins like a high. how could something so wrong, feel so right? you needed it, you needed him.
he tried to hold you off, he really did. it was hard to avoid you in such a small town but he went out of his way to make sure of it. joel left the room if he ever saw you walk in, his excuses running low as he continued to find ways to create space between the two of you. most people would be offended by it, but you found it flattering in your own way.
eventually he cracked.
it was at a bar that you had no business being in, walking past him with the curve of your ass ghosting over his bulge.
his patience had worn thin of your games, following behind to corner you in the restroom. his finger pointed in your face as he talked down on you like you were a child being disciplined.
âyouâve stepped outta line for the last time, girl.â you can smell the beer on his breath, his prickled cheeks flushed red. âwhat dâyou think your parents would think of this behavior, hm? should i finally tell âem?â
âwell? why havenât you yet?â after all, joel had many chances to report you. it wasnât the first time you took things too far. you tilt your head in realization, looking up at him. âmaybe itâs because you donât want me to stop.â
you step closer, your hand finding his and guiding him to your inner thigh. âitâs okay. you donât need permission from my daddy to touch me, joel.â
he grunts, his body tensing as he struggled to hold restraint. his callus palm rubbed against your smooth shaven leg, the contrast textures of skin igniting a heat in your core. you jerk your hips forward as you chased the feeling, his hesitant touch skimming along your clothed cunt.
âwe canât be doinâ this-â joel began to draw his arm back, but you grabbed his wrist in reflex.
you cut him off. âyou donât have to do anything, just let me.â
and he does. he knows he will be cursing himself for his sins later. but god, your eyes were pleading with him in desperation. you carried something deeper than desire. it wasnât just a craving, you truly couldnât help yourself. you had a fix and he was the only one who could fulfill it. who would he be to deny you of that?
it wasnât like you werenât asking him anyways, no, you were telling him.
he gave in and you took control, tugging your underwear to the side and rutting yourself into him. you were already slick and messy from the thought of him, coating his fingers in your arousal. two of his digits intrude you with a stretch that makes you whine.
joel shudders at the sound, watching you take from him with greed. before he can help himself his fingers curl inside, hitting a spot that has you grabbing onto the sink beneath you.
your pulse quickens, your nails scratching his flesh as he pumps into you. you fuck yourself with his hand like a toy and he matches your pace, no longer holding back.
all of his senses are heightened. he can taste the iron from the blood of biting down on his tongue, your walls squeezing around him and sucking him in like quicksand. if he wanted to stop now, he couldnât.
âthis is fucked, yâknow that?â joelâs nerves were tingling, his hand weak and nearly cramping in position.
you arenât sure if heâs talking to you or to himself, but you moan in agreement. a knot forms in your stomach, clenching him like heâs your saving grace.
he flicks his fingers to the knuckle with a few more strokes, unraveling with a cry in his neck as you release onto the counter and drip down his wrist.
you ride out your climax, still clutching onto him to steady yourself as you stand to your feet. your eyes trail to his jeans to see a wet patch soaking through.
