I've read how Peter might know, when he offered the bite to Stiles in 1x12, Stiles has a spark and may become something else than a werewolf, especially when he said to Stiles, "Maybe more", referring to Stiles being more powerful than Scott. How do you think Peter knew Stiles may be something more? Peter also didn't seem to be fully certain, then, about Stiles having a spark, since he said "maybe". (1/?)
Do you also think that in 4x12, Stiles having a phone service under the church was a irrefutable evidence for Peter that Stiles is something or he had got this evidence, before, and Peter was shocked/concerned/afraid (I apologize if I didn’t described Peter’s expression, right), because he saw that Stiles may be capable of more than Peter thought. (2/2)

Peter’s little speech in 1x12 about “maybe more” can be read as both him knowing more than he’s letting or it’s just a clever bit in his sales pitch to make Stiles feel special and perhaps be swayed more easily. The fact is we don’t know. Peter wanted a bigger pack, he spent most of season 1 trying to communicate with Scott and get him to understand his mission of revenge against Kate and everyone involved in the fire without succeeding much.
BUT Peter doesn’t seem to have been entirely in control of himself in the beginning. In the flashbacks he shows Scott we see that Peter was treated by questionable methods for his burns (with WATER and his blood + some black goo being flushed down the drain, possibly into the telluric currents/nementon?)
nurse jennifer appeared all spooky like an apparition (in her old fashioned nurses uniform that i know a lot have wondered about when all other nurses in the show wear scrubs)
and he rose from the bed all zombie-like on the full moon in a fashion eerily reminiscent of Jackson the kanima under Matt’s control.
I’m tempted to suggest Peter has been a patient at Eichen House before, and that when he killed Laura he wasn’t really “himself”
I have written more about this theory here.
Anyway - the point is that Peter in the beginning of the series seems to be under someone else’s control but gradually manage to regain more and more control of himself. But he can first only move around as a werewolf and not as a human. That of course makes it harder to communicate and so he tries to show scott through actions like calling him to the mauling of the bus driver, compelling him at the school, showing him the revenge spiral. Needless to say he doesn’t much succeed.
I also think he used Jackson as a tool to try and break him and Allison up, because he realized that relationship was clouding his judgement - remember Derek took Scott to see Peter at the hospital and the argued about it in front of him.
a couple of episodes later Peter encounters Jackson in the video store, tampers with his claw marks made by derek
and Jackson gets aconite poisoning and also starts his weird pursuit of Allison.
In fact jackson looks ill after, has a hallucination of Peter’s claws coming out of his mouth (in the mirror no less, never a good sign)
and the very next scene we see him shuffling his feet all zombie-like along the hallway to Allison. Even the music is eerie and creepy, and Allison is also visibly unnerved.
ANYWAY - i totally verved off topic a bit there didn’t i? The point was that Peter had trouble communicating, but he clearly had no problem hearing people around him.
So when did he encounter Stiles? The answer is in 1x07 Night School. Peter is chasing them around, not really wanting to kill them obviously (this is another episode where Jackson clearly is under his spell, one of these days i will post a huge ass meta on this).
Stiles is the one throwing the keys into one of the locker rooms and traps Peter in there. He even goes to look into the room, almost to taunt him, something that probably intrigued him. Stiles is being resourceful and brave in the face of the supernatural despite being human (probably).
There is this one moment that might not be anything, but it was constructed and filmed in a way that made me stop and watch it several times. Like always i’m probably over-analyzing stuff.
So, the gang has taken refuge in the cafeteria and everyone aside from Stiles is running around like headless chicken blocking the door. He’s trying to get their attention to point out that the room is more or less made of windows and hardly safe. They overlook all his attempts to stop until he shouts out a “HEY” and they all stop spin around and freeze like soldiers being given a command.
The way it’s filmed makes it seem almost as if it’s an alpha’s roar. The sound and music score heavily adds to this feeling so I urge you to look at the scene to judge for yourself. There is something powerful about it, and curiously the four others all turn around immediately looking taken aback and compliant.
Or (more likely) they’re just spooked when he calls out. They’re all on the verge of panic at this point, and I accept that this probably isn’t anything.
This is also the first time Peter is in close proximity with Stiles and he not only traps him, he also taunts him, he’s one of the more level-headed people here and in this instance he acts like an alpha. Just saying :)
But Peter hasn’t really met Stiles, but he probably heard Derek on the phone in 1x09 when he was looking for Peter. And hence the casual almost flirty “you must be stiles” - because Peter seems slightly intrigued and amused by this person. But then again Stiles has proven to be like catnip to Hales…
**
The scene with the phone in 4x12 - Peter looks geniunely surprised and almost scared. So he might have suspected stiles has the potential, but i don’t think he knew how far along he really is.
And yes Peter does look very afraid. I don’t think he’d entirely expected this development and it’s almost like stiles has just made a move peter hadn’t anticipated.
