🎃 ; JANUARY as ART, CHALLENGERS
"Imitation's the highest form of flattery... or something, right." Cliff felt like he ran into more famous people living in Rosewood than he ever did in California, and he told himself he'd gotten used to it- Until it was somebody super cool, of course, and whose work he really admired. Then he just prayed he didn't look like a dork. "What's she getting out of that, catfishing? You think she asked him for money?"
"I think it's also a crime..." January said, not entirely confident in her statement even if it felt like it should have been true. "I don't know, what do people usually get out of doing that? Ego trip? Living a fantasy? I hope they're not asking people for money, that would be awful. I don't want people thinking I would do that." January crossed and uncrossed her arms a few times, clearly uncomfortable after the encounter. "Do you want to hang out for a bit? I don't think he really believed me and I don't want to run into him on my own again. I mean, if you're not busy. I just figured... I see you around the record store enough that we could almost be friends, right?"
"Well, that was weird," January sighed as the guy she'd been talking to finally departed. "Does it count as some kind of professional milestone when you discover your first catfish? I feel gross now... someone's out there pretending to be me and hitting on men."
"It really is an art, it's why so many influences are who they are," Dulcie teased, having to adjust her sunglasses to make sure it was January she was actually seeing. She had run into the band enough over the years for the initial fangirl moments to die down but they never really ceased. "Of course, it'd be a shame not to get that picture. I mean I can take it for you but here, let me show you," she told her and took out her own phone. "It's about moving the phone and not your head. Sometimes we try to move our heads to follow the lens but it just makes us look weird. So keep your head level with the guitar and move the phone," she instructed her, showing her as she snapped a photo of the two of them in front of the guitar and managed to get both of them in. "See? Go ahead try. And don't hold it too close!"
"Just because they can take a picture of themselves?" She didn't mean to sound judgmental, but the undertones were there. So be it though, it wasn't like she had any standing to dictate what society deemed a genuine profession. All she did was sing, which she supposed some people would also consider a waste of time. "I'm sure someone out there would love a picture up my nose," she grimaced, but found that following Dulcie's advice helped immensely. "Would you look at that... Almost looks like I know what I'm doing."
Birdie had no business being in the music store but she’d clocked January through the window and couldn’t help herself. She was sucked in by the gravitational pull of celebrity. “Are you kidding? I was made for this. Do you want the store as your background, though? The lighting’s a lot better outside.”
"Well, only reason I was taking a picture was for the guitar," she pointed behind her. "Unless you're so good you can get it from outside," she chuckled, recognising the type of eagerness the other girl had. It didn't put her off, she was surprisingly patient with people who recognised her despite her reputation as avoidant of the spotlight. "It doesn't have to be a groundbreaking picture, I don't curate my instagram with any real effort. Which apparently makes me old fashioned but it's too time consuming. I prefer film. You get one shot and that's it, you know? It's real."
Jake tilted his head to the side as he watched the girl struggle with her phone, unable to place her face for a few seconds before it finally clicked in his mind who he was looking at. January Maddox. He was surprised she didn’t have some entourage following her around, jumping at the chance to help her with whatever she needed. “Uh, I can take it for you if you want.” He offered, raising his hand slightly as if it was possible for her to miss him before he thought better of it. “It might take a few tries to get something gold though. I still haven’t managed to figure out the right angles or lighting for things either.”
Despite clearly having made a name for herself outside of her past January wasn't sure she'd ever get away from that moment of expectation when someone approached her– that they'd make some sort of comment about her belonging in that neglected mansion with those strange women that were her mom and aunt. Then he simply offered to help her and her expression rapidly shifted to a grateful smile. "I'd like to consider it a skill to be able to take a selfie that looks like a bad passport photo one hundred percent of the time. I mean, no one said skills had to be useful or desirable, right?"
Vienna would’ve helped January earlier but she knew how much she wanted to figure these things out for herself. And while she wasn’t sure how much longer she could watch her struggle she found it kind of endearing too. When Jan turned her phone around to show off the fruits of her labor, she couldn’t help the laugh that’d escaped her. “What’d you do, use a fisheyes lens? Here.” Taking January by her arms, she shifted her to the side some so she’d have the best angle with the guitar in the back, then got out her own phone to demonstrate. She wasn’t going to take the picture for her, if she really wanted to learn, but she could mirror her. “Drop your chin more and... zoom out, it looks like you pushed in a bit.”
"Mack always says there's no such thing as a bad photo of me, so thank you for keeping my head a respectful size." To be fair she too would say the same for Vienna, but that wasn't the point. What she appreciated most about her girlfriends was the different ways they approached the world. Vienna was practical, the type who thrived in her independence, so of course she was the one to show January how to do things herself rather than doing them for her. Not that Mackenzie's methods were any less desirable; it was no secret they adored how much she cared for them. The three of them had always been the parts of a whole, none more or less than the others. "You'd think it would be easy considering how many photos we've had taken of us," she chuckled, adjusting her posture a few times to the point she felt kind of stupid. That, she'd learned, tended to be exactly when these things were happening as they should so she snapped a picture quickly. Eyes scrunched shut, she held her phone out for Vienna to assess. "At least tell me the guitar looks cool."
**
Mackenzie wasn't trying to see January suffer on purpose, but half of it was kind of a 'teach a man to fish' kind of thing and the other half was a little more selfish because she thought Jan looked so cute as she tried to figure out the art of the selfie. "It's better than the last time you tried. That means you're getting better, the guitar makes it trickier. Gimmie, you just sit there and look pretty." Mackenzie said making grabby hands for a moment then taking to phone over to get some snaps of Jan with the guitar. "Does this mean you're gonna buy it?" She asked while framing up in way she thought January would like.
"Generous words, as always," January gladly handed her phone over, not particularly concerned over taking whatever qualified as good selfies though she did appreciate that Mackenzie was always willing to help without judgment. She was glad that at least one good thing had come from the first iteration of their career; an ability to make herself comfortable in front of a camera. "Buy it?" She pressed her lips together in a non-committal shrug. "I just thought it was pretty and I know people look at my instagram more when I'm in the pictures." Not that she was fishing for likes, but she knew in reality it was important to engage attention every now and again for the band's sake and there were only so many photos of clouds and street cats the general public would pay attention to.
"Why is this so hard..." January was squinting at her phone, moving it up and down in an attempt to take a selfie with a cool guitar she'd seen in the window of the music store. Having grown up in a vastly technology free household and then dropped into the fame machine where there were people to do these things for her, she'd never quite become a natural when it came to handling her phone. "Oh no, noooo... Come on..." She groaned a laugh, flipping her phone around to show the terrible angle she'd captured, making her forehead look atrociously huge. "Help a girl out? Please?"
“Y-You’ve never seen...” Tom began to say, in shock before reminding himself how rude that could come off. Some people didn’t have the time to see movies or had a plethora of other reasons they couldn’t see films, especially when they were– “Uh, yeah. Yeah, I happen to-to-to know my fair share of stuff.” January Maddox. He was talking to the January Maddox. To say he was a fan of her band was an understatement. “I-I’ve always wanted to ask, wh-what is that like?” Tom asked, with a small laugh. “Uhm, yeah, o-of course.” He said with a nod of his head, before looking out towards the crowd forming in front of the screen. “M-My boyfriend and our f-friends are out there, if-if you’d like, I can ask them to hold down room f-for you and y-your girlfriends?” Tom suggested. “Fair warning, we are definitely t-talkers b-but we do come w-with great snacks.”
"I missed some pretty important cultural milestones as a child. Should have seen the day I found out about Beyonce." January joked to ease his embarrassment, leaving it at that because everyone knew about the Maddox family's haunted mansion up on Break Point. The place was essentially a time capsule, she'd never even had a television until she'd moved into the dorms at St Agnes. It hadn't even registered that he might have been shocked she was speaking to him, she and the girls weren't exactly known for being sociable, so she carried on unawares. "Oh, it's slimey. Feels like paint but... stickier? Trying to wash it out of my hair was a nightmare." That he was offering for her to join his friends made her pause, considering whether Mack and Vienna would be okay with it. It stuck with her latest theme of jumping out of their bubble, and if worst came to worst Mack would absolutely take over in the charm department so... "Sure," she grinned, holding her hand out, "how about I help hand the programs out until they get here?"
“Y-Yeah, it’s no The Little Mermaid, but–” Tom commented, as he handed out programs for that evenings Movies Under the Stars, an event he’d happily joined in one for the summer in which great classic films were screened in Rosewood Park. “it is School of Rock and c’mon, who hates J-Jack Black? No one. So enjoy the s-show.”
"I've never seen it but you sound like you know your stuff," January's brow squinted in concentration at the program she'd been handed, deciding that yeah she was right, she'd never seen the film in question. "I know Jack Black though! He's so fun, I met him at some award show once. I got slimed, it was crazy." She glanced around, not quite ready to join the throng of people trying to get a good spot, "Would it be okay if I waited here? My girlfriends are on their way still and I know for a fact I'm too nice to hold down a big enough place to sit on my own."
