a conjunction that expresses the idea of 'even (though)'

医者といえども時に病気になることもある。// Even doctors sometimes become ill.

～ちゃ・～じゃ・～きゃ

Just as it is normal practice to use ja arimasen instead of dewa arimasen many people use shortened sentence patterns like those shown below. In conversations between friends this type of speech sounds more natural. However, the way that these forms are used depends on each person.

1. ～てはいけない　－　～ちゃいけない、　～ではいけない　－　～じゃいけない

食べてはいけない　－　食べちゃいけない

急いではいけない　－　急いじゃいけない

２．～てしまう　－　～ちゃう、　～でしまう　－　～じゃう

食べてしなう　－　食べちゃう

飲んでしまう　－　飲んじゃう

３．～なくではいけない　－　なけちゃいけない、～なければならない　－　～なきゃならない

食べなくてはいけない　－　食べなくちゃいけない

食べなければならない　－　食べなきゃならない

～てる・～てく・～とく

Many short and easy-to-say forms are used in conversational Japanese. The sound i in ~teiru and ~teiku is dropped making these ~teru and ~teku. ~Teoku becomes ~toku as its e sound is also dropped.

1. ～ている　ー　～てる　：　

持っているよ　－　持ってるよ、　

持っていてね　－　持っててね、　

持っていないで　－　持ってないで。

２．～ていく　－　～てく　：　

子供を連れていくよ　－　子供を連れてくよ、　

連れていって下さい　－　連れてって下さい、　

子供を連れていこうか　－　子供を連れてこうか

３．～ておく　－　～とく　：　

買っておくよ　－　買っとくよ、　

買っておいて下さい　－　買っといて下さい、　

買っておこうかな　－　買っとこうかな

～をきっかけに・契機に

With A as a good opportunity/chance to B; Using A as a time to (start) B

N/Vruの/Vtaの　+ をきっかけに/きっかけとして/きっかけにして/契機に/契機として/契機にして

大学入学をきっかけに引っ越す。（だいがくにゅうがくをきっかけにひっこす）//Triggered by entrance to university I will move houses.

～も～ば～も・～も～なら～も

Used to show two conditions are either both true or both false

A is B and C is D; neither A is B nor C is D

N1も+Vば+N2も+Vru

N1も+iければ+N2も+iい

N1も+naなら+N2も+naだ

N1も+Nなら+N2も+Nだ

彼は勉強もできればスポーツもできる。（かれはべんきょうもできればスポーツもできる）//He is an outstanding student academically and in sports.

～とか

used when it's not 100% whether or not the sentence is true. used primarily in colloquial language.

今夜の花火大会は雨で中止だとか。（こんやのはなびたいかいはあめでちゅうしだとか）　// If it rains tonight the fireworks will be cancelled.

～から～にかけて

represents a span of time of physical expanse. Can be used whether or not conditions represent specific times/places.

for; over; extending; stretching; ranging; covering

N(time)+から~N(time)+にかけて N(place)+から~N(place)+にかけて

明日は昼から夕方にかけて雨でしょう。（あしたはひるからゆうがたにかけてあめでしょう） // Tomorrow it will rain from noon through to the evening.

～から見ると・から見れば・から見て

if you think from the standpoint of ~

from the viewpoint of; from the standpoint of ~

N + から見ると/から見れば/から見て

日本の習慣には外国人から見ると妙なものもあるだろう。（にほんのしゅうかんにはがいこくじんからみるとみょうなものもあるだろう） // There may be some Japanese customs that are strange from the foreigner's perspective.

～からすると・からすれば

considering ~; thinking about ~; judging from ~;

N+からすると/からすれば

症状からすると心臓の病気かもしれない。（しょうじょうからするとしんぞうのびょうきかもしれない） // Judging from the symptoms it may be a heart disease.

～から言うと・から言えば・から言って

a phrase that means either 'in terms of' or 'judging from'

in terms of; from the viewpoint of; judging from

N+から言うと;から言えば;から言って

客の立場から言うとこの店は入り口がせまくて入りにくい。（きゃくのたちばからいうとこのみせはいりぐちがせまくてはいりにくい） // From the customer's view this shop has a small entrance which makes it hard to get in.

～かのように

a conjunctive phrase that forms an adverbial clause which describes the way s.o./s.t. appears to the writer, contrary to reality

as if;

V/i/na/N + かのように

葬式が始まると雨が降り出した。まるで空が泣いているかのようだ。（そうしきがはじまるとあめがふりだした。まるでそらがないているかのようだ） // When the funeral started it began to rain. It was as if the sky was crying.

～ことなく

without doing A once (expressed strongly)

without;

雨は休むことなく降り続いた。（あめはやむことなくふりつづいた）//It was raining continuously without end.

彼女は止めることもなく何時間も泣き続けた。 (かのじょはやめることもなくなんじかんもなきつづけた)

She cried for hours without ceasing

s.t. is definitely not possible

V-masu + っこない

一日でこの本の文法全部なんて覚えられっこない。（いちにちでこのほんのぶんぽうぜんぶなんておぼえられっこない） // It's impossible to memorize the grammar in this book in one day

～ぬ

an archaic auxiliary that indicates negation

Vneg+ぬ (Ex.: 知らぬ)

グロバルな時代に自国のことを考えるわけにはいかぬ。（グロバルなじだいにじこくのことをかんがえるわけにはいかぬ） // In the global age we can't think of our own countries alone.

～に先立ち

This construction refers to something social or public, and not something personal. Before s.t. occurs/takes place

Nni/Vruni + 先立ち/先立って/先立つN

開店に先立ち関係者だけのパーティーが行われた。（かいてんにさきだちかんけいしゃだけのパーティーがおこなわれた）// Prior to opening a party was held with those involved.

向こう vs 向かい

向こう requires a reference line (which may be overtly expressed or not expressed). It means A and B are on opposite sides with respect to C.

店は川の向こうにある。 A = current location, B = store, C = river

向かい requires a "forward" direction. It means that along a line starting from A and facing the forward direction, there is B.

佐藤さんの向かいが山田さんだ。

～向き

Similar to 向け but it has a different meaning. That is, muki carries the meaning of 'facing' or 'suitable for'

N+向き+だ/に/のN

私は南向きの部屋が欲しい。（わたしはみなみむきのへやがほしい）//I want a room facing south

この話が映画よりむしろアニメ向きだ。（このはなしがえいがよりむしろアニメむきだ）//This story is more suitable for anime than for a movie
