New Delhi Gothic (winter)
-You wake up at 7:30 am in the middle of the gray mist. It’s cold and wet, even though the sun will be up in a couple of hours and it will be ten degrees hotter. You go back to sleep because you have nothing to wake up for.
-The pollution settles into the daily routine.Everyone is lethargic, everyone is yawning. You know you slept for 10 hours but you yawn anyway.
-The birds start screaming at 3:30 am every night. They stop exactly at 4 am. You don’t know why they do this. The city is full of birds.
-You haven’t read the newspaper in years, but you know the contents by heart. The news never changes, only the names do.
-“The pollution is so bad today” people say in greeting. You nod. The air purifiers never show the levels above 999 and they’ve been at that level for a while.
-Everything in the city is dying. Everything but the mosquitoes. It’s almost December.
