One of my favourite book series has officially ended. I just read the last book in the series 💔😭

On one hand, it was so beautiful and happy, all the fulfillment I needed. On the other hand, I will miss adventures in that universe.

I definitely will be rereading it regularly, because I love it so ❤️

If you like sort of modern fantasy (vampires and angels and humans) slash adventure with POC, with really great, complex female characters; male characters with depth and ones who actually develop and change; some gruesome bloody things, but also hot spicy things, I recommend Nalini Singh's Guild Hunter series 🩷 You can always come screech at me about it and I'll happily indulge!

Tech Tuesday: Curtis Everett | Part 10

Summary: Morning at Curtis' place doesn't go as expected.

A/N: Reader is female, nickname Heart. No physical descriptors used.

Curtis is woken up by Soot's need for breakfast. Even though he was asleep on the couch, she knew to wake him and not their guest who was, hopefully, still asleep in his bed.

"Thanks for waking me up," he softy coos as he scritches Soot's ears. "Heart's been going through a lot and she needs the rest. She's gotta take care of so many people that she can barely take care of herself."

Making sure to grab a can of the wet stuff Soot loves so much, Curtis crouches next to her food bowl, smiling at the kitten's eagerness.

"Not to mention she's been going through a really rough time with an almost literal blast from her past showing up," he continues, petting the kitten as she eagerly eats. "That's a lot of emotional baggage to be dealing with at the same time as starting up a relationship. I can't even imagine the emotional whiplash."

Soot nuzzles her head against his hand before climbing up his arm. He makes sure to stay still so her claws don't dig in to his skin. He'll stand when she's gotten to the sleeve on his shoulder.

"All that to say, 'thanks' again for helping me let her sleep in."

Waking up in an unfamiliar place is scary until you remember the night before with Curtis' "massage parlor". Even though he promised it was okay that you fell asleep, you still feel embarrassed. You'd been wanting to rock his world, or get your world rocked. Instead, the man gave you a different kind of pleasure, but still with his hands, for so long. Your legs turned to jelly, but not in the way you'd planned. And then you'd had the best night's sleep you've had in so long.

If it weren't the guilty feelings building up, you'd let yourself enjoy the comfy bed and relaxed muscles a little longer.

Sure, Curtis told you it was all okay, that he understood, but you know a guy can only hold out for so long before he loses interest. You've been gamer friends with Curtis for years. Then IRL friends. Sure, he could have waited then, but now you're dating and dating has expectations. If you're not careful, you could lose Curtis.

Or is that just the ghost of Chase's "logic" infesting your brain? Pushing you into sex when you weren't ready because it's how guys are. Because it's how relationships are. And if you wanted someone to stay, you had to give them what they wanted, putting their needs first every time.

Getting out of bed, you think on your relationship with Curtis. How different he is from Chase. How patient, understanding, respectful he's been. Chase was never like that. Not at any point in your relationship. Maybe Curtis was serious when he said it was okay that you were falling asleep.

But you still feel bad.

Stepping out of the bedroom, you're met by the sight of Curtis standing at the stove with Soot on his shoulder. You can't help the little "awww" that escapes you. Your heart melts even more when your voice is met with two pairs of surprised eyes looking back at you.

"The two of you are so adorable! Can I take a photo?"

Curtis blushes as he smiles, "of course. I left your phone charging on the dresser."

It's quick work grabbing the phone and taking the photo. You're giggling the whole time, delighted at waking up to such a cute image.

"I'm going to make it that the background photo for my phone," you declare.

"That reminds me," Curtis' face looks a little nervous. "I have a photo I'd like to use for mine, but I want to make sure it's okay, first."

"Oh?" you blink, panic rising. Maybe it's another woman. Or did he take an inappropriate photo of you? Chase did that all the time.

Curtis takes out his phone as he explains, "when you were wrapped up in the blankets, Soot was being a bit of a brat about the whole thing. She's not good with change, apparently. So I wrapped her up in a purrito and set her next to you as you were asleep."

He shows you the photo and, even though you hate seeing pictures of yourself, seeing the two of you wrapped up in blankets, getting good sleep, definitely softens you towards the image.

"If you don't like it, I'm willing to delete it," he adds. "You didn't exactly give permission for the photo."

"I love it! And I'm honored you'd want it as your phone's background!" you exclaim, giving him a big hug.

An indignant meow gets your attention and you see Soot staring at you from Curtis' shoulder.

"Oh, right, I need to acknowledge the queen of the apartment," you giggle. Giving Soot some scritches does the trick. She leans into your touch and starts making biscuits on Curtis' back, making him hiss. "Do you need me to stop?"

"No, no. It's no worse than getting a tattoo," he quickly reassures. "That and I'm genuinely glad she gets along with you. I was a little worried last night when she was upset about the change in bed, but it seems making sure she still gets fed on time is the cure-all."

"Do you need any help with breakfast? I feel bad I fell asleep on you instead of...you know. And now you're making breakfast for the both of us."

"Well it's not like the breakfast is anything special. Just some bacon, eggs and toast. I'm no cook, but I've got the basics. But if you want to get a couple plates, I'd appreciate it! And don't worry about falling asleep. You've been overworked so much lately, I'm just glad I could help you get some real rest."

"How are you real?" you swoon, making him blush.

His phone dings a few times in a row and his face furrows in confusion. Picking it up, he informs you it's a few texts from Maestro.

"Is she okay?" you ask, worriedly.

Curtis chuckles softly. "She's doing better than okay. She's engaged to Mr. Mustache." He shows you the photo of Maestro's hand showing off a simple, yet elegant, ruby ring. "He definitely picked out a good one for her. She's not one for gaudy and, as a fellow programmer, I know the importance of having a lightweight ring."

"You wear rings?" you tease.

"Yeah," he blushes again. "I'm regularly on-and-off when it comes to them."

His phone dings again as he plates up breakfast.

"Huh. They're going to Vegas next week. She asked me to be her Man of Honor."

"Go for it!" you encourage. "I won't be able to go with you, it's too soon to ask for the time off, but I can take care of Soot for you."

"You sure you don't mind?"

"Not so long as you send me photos! That wedding is going to be a blast!"

"You are too good to me," he smiles before giving you a big kiss.

People will use it to say “Holy shit guys some INTENSE SHIT happens in this story” without actually saying what that Intense Shit™ is.

In actuality, the “Dead Dove” tag is meant to be used in addition to other warning tags. Pulled from a scene from the show Arrested Development (look it up on YouTube!), it means “Hi! Hey! I labeled this fic to warn you of what’s in it, so you might REALLY want to read those labels! This fic is exactly what it says on the tin! The tags are accurate! Don’t say I didn’t warn you, because this is me warning you! Read the tags!”

So before you accidentally use the “Dead Dove: Do Not Eat” tag without context, here’s your preemptive lesson for next time. Please tag your fics accordingly! Ta!

I’ve got a hoe thought…so one of my favorite “guilty pleasure” songs (I don’t really believe in guilty pleasures because it suggests I should feel shame and why the fuck would I ever feel ashamed for loving the weird little things that make my heart happy?) is Bad Touch by The Bloodhound Gang. There’s a line in there about how “we can do it doggy style so we can both watch X files”. My brain always goes immediately to Jake and his reader for this but I’d like to know your thoughts on it regarding him and even the other CE babes. I could totally see reader and Jake doing this like Netflix and chill style all comfy cozy in bed watching their show/movie together and having weird/nerdy commentary with each other the whole time but also just being kind of slow and lazy about it, just enjoying each other and the moment but not rushing it. It’s more about that deeper intimacy and connection kind of like the same way I could see reader and Jake playing video games together and her in his lap cockwarming him while they play.
