@jar3
joenicky and some of the little things they celebrate over the centuries? Calendars change but the solstices are still the solstices so maybe those? Idk have fun with it 🥰
“Jolabokaflod!” cries Joe, bursting in the front door of the small house in which he and Nicky are lying low. He has a cheerful red scarf wrapped around his neck and his hair is dusted with snow. There’s a package wrapped in brown paper in his hand.
“What have you done?” Nicky asks dryly from his seat by the fire.
Joe closes the door and stamps the snow off his boots. The look on his face is pure mischief. “Nothing,” Joe says cheerfully, shrugging out of his coat and hanging it on a peg. “Nothing particularly wicked, anyway.”
This isn’t perhaps as reassuring as Joe thinks. “Should I be armed?” Nicky asks.
“Psh,” Joe says, ambling across the room to sit across from Nicky. “How many knives do you have on your person right now?”
“Six.”
“And your special knife.”
“Yes.”
“So, seven.”
Nicky wiggles a hand. “Eh.”
Joe laughs softly, and offers Nicky the parcel he’s still holding. “For you.”
Nicky takes the package and slides his fingers under the string tied expertly around it. “What’s the occasion?”
“Jolabokaflod!” Joe crows. “The Icelandic tradition of exchanging books on December 24th.” He waggles his eyebrows. “We get to read all day.”
Nicky pulls the paper away from his book and finds a new book about Circe. “Sorcery,” he says, delighted. “Extremely festive.”
Joe slumps back in his chair, happiness written across his face. “I knew you would like it.”
Nicky slides his hand down beside his chair and pulls out a package wrapped in paper depicting dinosaurs in Santa hats. “And for you.”
“You jolabokaflodded me?” Joe asks.
Nicky closes one eye at the verb, but nods as Joe takes the package.
Joe rips the paper open. “Three Bags Full, A Sheep Detective!” he says with wonder. “SHEEP who solve crime?”
Nicky smiles at him. “Sadly there were no goat detectives to be hand.”
Joe nods solemnly. “I do like a good goat,” he agrees. He looks over at Nicky eyes twinkling. “I’ll make tea. And – “
“—we’ll go back to bed,” Nicky finishes, causing Joe to clap his hands once in affirmation. He stands, leans in and kisses Nicky’s forehead. “Happy book day, my love,” he whispers.
Nicky tilts his head back to steal a proper kiss.

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE INSTINCTIVE HIP GRAB AND THE FOREHEAD TOUCH OF REASSURANCE AND THE WINK OVER DINNER AND THE TEASING SMILE ON THE WAY TO A JOB AND THE SHARED LOOKS. IT'S ABOUT THE SMALL MOMENTS AND THE FAMILIARITY BETWEEN TWO HEARTS THAT BEAT AS ONE
fall🍂🍁
the really great thing about joe/nicky is that every couple dynamic works for them. enemies to lovers, check. snarky battle couple, check. soft domestic lived together for years couple, check. ridiculously mushily in love couple, check. they’ve got it all.
Broad shoulders
Joe handles the money for them because whenever Nicky has cash, it ends up being given to other people. Donation box! Homeless person! Baklava bets! When Nile joins them, Nicky is just constantly giving her $$$$ at a time "for snacks" or whatever. Joe loves this about him, but is also like "we got out that cash for a specific reason, babe. Let me hold onto it"
every time he does it joe is like i love you SO much and you are the kindest and most generous person i have ever met but we DO have finite funds and nicky very serenely is like money is a construct, and it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God and joe is like well yes, darling, that is true, however, the kingdom of God is not an immediately pressing issue for us while the lack of a rental car unfortunately is

I AM SHRIEKING YOU HAVE REDUCED NICKY DOWN TO HIS BARE MONASTIC ORDER ESSENTIALS
@this-is-surely-tru how does it feel to be a genius
#there is a REASON joe sleeps against the wall #and that’s bc his husband knows joe is slow to wake #also tho…. nicky immediately upon being startled awake: gUN #joe upon being startled awake: nicKY #like… touches nicky right away and ugh #i love them

Joe does everything possible to find Nicky first in dangerous situations. In the underground bunker, he immediately dives past Andy to Nicky’s side after they reanimate. He’s got Nicky’s six and he covers his blind spots throughout the movie (and vice versa because they’re a team and it’s equal give and take). In the van, his first reaction is to check on Nicky, not bust their way out. It’s not just physically dangerous scenes, but emotional ones too. Andy is explaining about Lykon and how they can die? Joe is already gazing at Nicky when the camera pans back, as if to verify Nicky is still immortal and with him.
"As long as I still can reach out and touch you
Then I will never die "
Joe and Nicky, getting into bed after a long day. The light’s already off, they pull up the blankets and adjust them to how they like. They lay down, facing each other. They don’t talk, they’re comfortable with the silence. Nicky runs his finger over Joe’s eyebrow. Joe strokes Nicky’s cheek with the pad of his thumb. Finally, they kiss as a “good night”. Nicky turns over; he pulls Joe’s arm with him and smiles at Joe’s quiet chuckle. Joe, of course, wraps his arm tight around Nicky and Nicky intertwines their fingers over his stomach. They fall asleep, safe and warm.
sentencing an actively suicidal and lonely man into exile from his friends for a century and then having him return only to give up his immortality in order to find an "end ticket" that will give his life meaning again just to immediately sacrifice himself with a pointless death where andy could have easily helped him take care of the bad guys is such a boring ending for bookers character im bored
"im sad about it, but it was in character for booker to sacrifice his life at the end :(" booker's suicidal and foolish but he's not an idiot. he's been immortal and fighting with this team since the early 1800s so i think it's a) disrespectful to insinuate that this was a fight he couldn't win b) he could have simply left the door open so andy could help since the bad guys definitely couldn't have gotten past both of them c) ANDY LITERALLY CANNOT DIE SO WHO IS HE PROTECTING BY DOING THIS???? his death was utterly pointless. sacrificing his immortality was in character. sacrificing his life like that was NOT
Mood post Superman
James Gunn’s thesis statement for his Superman is simple and effective: "Be good. Do good. Be human despite the bad things. That is the most punk rock thing in a world so stoic and cynical."
And that’s how it should be. That’s beautiful, the new Superman movie is beautiful.
not this quote from les mis making me emotional thinking about joe and nicky
There are men who seem born to be the opposite, the reverse, the counterpart. (…) They live only on condition of leaning on another; their names are sequels, only written preceded by the conjunction ‘and’; their existence is not their own; it is the other side of a destiny not their own.
a gentle reminder that based on what copley says to merrick in the car, getting the team captured wasn't the plan copley or booker consciously had in mind in south sudan. The plan was for them to get enough samples from the killfloor scene initially, and when that doesn't work copley thinks the video is gonna be enough. it wasn't even the next plan, as copley suggests he can get ONE of the immortals (implying booker) but not all of them. When booker signed up for this, what HE thought was gonna happen is that they all get shot to shit once and then later someone contacts him a way he can end his own life. That was the original plan.
This is not to say he isn't responsible for getting them captured and tortured, he definitely is, just that he didn't set out to do that initially. and if we listen to copley in the lab he is horrified and confused and surprised at the way merrick is treating them. that is naive yes, (like almost ridiculously so) but clearly that was not the plan, and at that point booker didn't know that was happening either. Again, he is totally responsible for the consequences for his actions and letting it go that far, but pretending like he signed a paper saying "consent and agree to let my family be captured and tortured forever" is incorrect. when he realises how bad things are he begs to be left in the lab. he didn't want this for his family, he was too depressed and selfish to not see that it wouldn't but it still matters if we are gonna talk about his motivations.
