Some of Thomas Demand’s work, made from paper and cardboard on a small scale, and photographed in such a way to make them seem life-size. I actually utilised ta similar technique in documenting some of my small scale experiments, and am still toying with the idea of including some kind of photography along with the actual sculptue.

I was thinking back to an exhibition I’d seen at the Fruitmarket Gallery in Edinburgh some years ago, and the work of Damien Ortega (Top Image), showing a depiction of water erosion on stacked terracotta tiles, and came across another work of his in brick. This is oddly similar to the direction i’ve been going with the cardboard structures, especially in the way that we’ve been facing the inner grain of the bricks/cardboard in the same uniform direction on every layer. We’re both trying to utilise that same contrast between two surfaces which forces the viewer to consider the piece from all angles.

Another work from Ian Trask, this one utilising a very similar layering system as the one i’ve been using, i had actually thought of doing this exact thing, but alas it has been done before.

In looking at Ian Trask’s work i stumbled across some works by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, who uses cardboard tubes in renewable construction techniques.

Ian Trask was one of the first artists i came across who used corrugated cardboard extensively. The larger fan type objects i think are made from the bendy inner layer, which is not something i’ve looked into yet, and may be a useful material.  I also think the cross section pieces relate to what i’m trying to do with my pyramids in some way, though my effect will be more to do with uniformity. It was also interesting to note that Ian Trask comes from a science background, which i suspected due to the nature of the pieces, being quite fractal, and this is somewhat similar to my own approach.
