The thing with atyd that kills me is that the marauders fandom upholding it as the pinnacle of intersectionality while what they really like it for is - a very watered down banal result of American identity politics. Like, the author was so annoyed by snape as an adult that they decided that he has to be a privileged abusive teenager as well. They snatched away his complexity of being a difficult victim of abuse, bullying, systematic poverty, because how can he be that AND a difficult adult? The mild mannered lupin had to be the poor one of course but nothing which is substantial but a poorly ripped off background from Peaky blinders. Sirius has to be a dainty beauty so that his viciousness can be overlooked. Like their world view is so simplistic that they couldn't fathom the fact that marauders who were on the 'right' side of muggle politics could actually be materially privileged enough to be genuine abusers and get away with it. Which is a very common occurrence! Anybody who is politically active even on a bare minimum level in the real life world knows that there are plenty of privileged, horrible people in a lot of progressive spaces and get away with it and infact, vouch for one another like the marauders did! To me atyd is a stark look at how words of politics are only decorative for the marauders fandom and they need to have extremely sanitized characters whose violence needs to be palatable because god forbid they can hold two juxtaposing ideas in their minds at one time. It's quite concerning actually
Oof, I think the whole creation of the fic has pettiness centred in a way..
Written in a childish way almost as if to punish Snapes character because they dislike it so much, because he stains their favs image. They took all his characteristics scattered it across and then made him an embarrassing comical villain of the story.
They reshape them so their abuse is easier to overlook. You canât even recognise Remus or Sirius at all its like theyâre somebody else, but thats why the marauders fandom is so lame all they care is about romantic relationships, thatâs why their characters turn out so underdeveloped.
It's terrifying to admit a 'good guy' is actually an abuser, so they deny it to feel secure.
They reduce it to âtheyâre on the good side, so they must be good,â when the Marauders were pretty shitty. (Its a very black and white world view.)
The marauders work in the order seems more like a performance to me. Who can be âbetterâ but in politics â not to strive for change but for applause.
What was your initial reaction when you discovered the existence of Marauders fandom?
I, for one, was inconvenienced by their existence before I even knew anything about them because everyone was so obsessed with Jegulus, and it was so popular, and since I never knew what they were about, I just registered them as like the "overhyped popular shit" and had a beef with them before I even knew it was from a HP fanfic and let alone James Potter was a character. And it was all downhill from there when I started loving Snape(which is as soon as I hit the movie and continues to when I read the books).
I was confused as heck. I looked into it scrolling through tiktok/ insta/ pinterest. At the time I wasnât that much into HP but I had read the books when I was younger so I got stupidly annoyed from where their info was coming from and left it alone.
When I started getting into HP again but this time I was more into it (nostalgia played a big part) and rediscovered the marauders I cringed big time. It never made sense to me it still doesnât, not to yuck anyones yum but its so dumbfuck to me.
I think James and Sirius were extremely unaware of the hierarchy in their little marauders group. They probably thought, james especially, that they were being magnanimous being friends with lupin and Peter, who if not, would have been easily the target of bullies like themselves. Friend groups like theirs - where people on the top are unaware, and those slightly below are aware yet wanting to keep the status quo to feel safe and avoiding their own vulnerability are more common than people think. Like the minute their friendship was put to test in the real world, it crumbled quite badly lmao. They were so used to feeling invincible in school, that they - james and sirius - really thought a bait and switch would work in the real world. Even if pettigrew hadn't betrayed it was a very stupid thing to do, the kind of stupidity that can only be born out of underestimating your enemy because you've been made to feel victorious all the time. Whenever I see collages/ edits of James, Spiderman is always there. All of his good deeds stem from assumptions/fan speculation, he doesnât have much contribution to the story nor Harrys growth so he is basically a blank page. A very blank boring page.

My personal hc on Snape and a little projection *cough cough* is that he cannot handle certain food and that he has GERD.
I grew up in poverty and my nutrition was very poor which caused me to develop it,I think it would be the same for him.
When he got to Hogwarts his stomach was used to certain foods and little amounts of it. I think he didnât do anything to fix it and his problems carried into adulthood.
He didnât have any proper idea why his stomach was this way so whenever heâd try to eat a little more he would get heartburn or just puke it back.
(For those who donât know GERD is when stomach acid or contents flow back up into the tube connecting your mouth and stomach, which causes irritation/ inflammation etc etc.)

Severus Snape isn't the best at "useless" subjects like Divination or Astronomy. To him, that was a bunch of hippie hocus pocus, pseudo-science at best. So, getting grades just enough to pass was really okay.
But Potions and Defense Against the Dark Arts... No, that was completely different. That was his thing, his area of study, the ones he based his own self worth upon.
He had no real friends, so most of his time was spent flipping through old, dusty books at the library, memorizing, perfecting every spell, every attack, every potion.
Every time the professor would grant him the highest grade, his ego would swell. The notion that he might not be that bad popped on his head.
So just imagine how pissed he is when you, a (y/h) snobby little thing, started to raise your hand before his on your shared classes to give out the answer before him. Or even worse, tell Slughorn your potion was ready when his didn't even start to brew properly.
Instantly, he would stare at you with such loathing that the whole room would feel ice cold.
As if you even cared. In your misery, you smirked to yourself in a quiet sense of triumph.
Poor Slughorn felt like he was in the middle of a war. You and Severus would frenetically raise your hands and yell the answer before the other. The other students didn't even have a chance to get any participation points or even process what the professor asked.
When the professor called you aside at the end of a class to invite you and your outstanding brain to be a part of the slug club, you were over the moon. Yes, being part of an exclusive group of potion studies and being closer to the potion master was a good thing. A great thing even.
But seeing Severus's face of defeat? Oh. It would be even better. Haha, I win, you lose.
You wanted to bite into your fist as you entered the space, ready to have a good dinner and an insightful conversation about the newfound uses of powdered acacia root, and you saw him.
The bastard.
With his hair falling like curtains in front of his face, Severus stared at his shoes with so much intent that one would figure he charmed the shine of his old shoes to play a quidditch match.
When he didn't know he was being watched, he looked quite different. Less mean. His shoulders were slumped, his head low, his gaze vacant. So obviously uncomfortable, it looked like he wanted to curl himself in a ball just to get out of there.
Hearing the door click behind you, Snape looked up to the door. Like magic, he squared his shoulders and returned to his own smug expression, eyeing you and how you dressed up and down.
You regretted simpatizing with him for a brief second.
And oh, of course, Slughorn made the seating chart so you would sit side by side. The man couldn't even hide his laughter properly, seeing you and Severus, both with crossed arms and frowns on your faces like pissed off toddlers.
The other students are either older or younger than you â which makes things way wore awkward. You feel that you don't fit in properly with the more advanced years, and the younger ones are bright-eyed with techniques you discovered on your own years ago.
So boring.
But as a 7th year boasted about mastering the art of dicing Bat Spleen just right for their potions, you had to swallow a chuckle. Everybody should know that it's best to crush it into a paste, to get the most of it's proprietiesâ
Wait.
Your head turned to your side so fast it could give you whiplash.
Severus had a palm over his mouth on his own, muffling his own laughter.
First: you didn't know he was capable of laughing. Second, there is no way that he knows your technique.
"What a dunderhead." Severus muttered to himself with rolling eyes as he caught you staring.
Turned out that secretly making fun of others's potion mistakes, even though it wasn't very ethical, it made those dinners much more bearable.
But you weren't friends. No, sir.
Until one day, Severus chuckled alone at something another student said. You didn't get it â the Hufflepuff was right about lavander being the best ingredient for calming draughts... right?
Severus leaned his head close, explaining with a rushing whisper and a glint in his onix eyes. "I am actually running some experiments on my own, with the dehydrated version of this herb I found at the forbidden forest â Slughorn doesn't have it. I think I might be into somethingâ"
And just like that, he was interrupted by deserts appearing at the table.
You needed to know. You were itching to put your hands on his papers. Not just because Severus knew something you didn't â but because, internally, you grew to respect Severus. He has a brain to match yours. He skimmed the idiocracy present in most SlugClub members, skipping the whole Slughorn fanatics.
You approached him outside of the slugclub for the first time.
It was hard to catch him after classes, as he always walked fast, looking at the ground, tending to be in the dark corners.
You called his name once and tapped his shoulder, which made him jump. Slightly, if you ask him. Barely.
It was so weird to Severus to have someone â no, not someone. You, of all people, to stop him on the halls for a little chat.
What, you wanted to see his experiment? Oh. Makes kind of sense. He knew he was brilliant, and he was the next best potionmaster ever.
But still... The bubbling cauldron was on his dorm. You had to go there.
Oh, Goddric.
The poor guy just nodded and mumbled a response. And, of course, walked as fast as he could with wide eyes and a pinch of terror crossing his features.
Weirdly, it turned... routine? Going with him back and forth through the potion class, the library, and his dorm to check on your newest concoction.
But nope. You aren't friends at all. Just two people who shared the same interest in science and potion brewing.
You were so exposed to new mixtures that you were suffering some side reaction by inhaling the strange vapors that lifted from his beaten up cauldron.
Like blushing of your cheeks when he starred too much â a habit he picked up when he finally tucked his dark hair behind his ears, allowing you to truly glance at his features.
Maybe the circulation of your blood was fucked up after all. You began to notice the heart palpitations, the drumming inside your ribs when he complimented your essay about the draught of living death.
Walking into the Forbidden Forest, side by side, searching for this strange herb Severus talked about, you felt your hands numb. Your palm tingled, as if it should be holding something, as his knuckles accidentally brushed yours.
Something kept you from telling him your strange symptoms. You don't know what.
He proposed that you both train for the next class: Amortentia. Seemed like a fairly simple concoction, but he still wanted more practice at some processes.
You found yourself past curfew on his dorm, thankfully alone, since all of his roommates were out to party. Who knew, Slytherin won another quidditch match.
Under the warm light of the fire underneath the cauldron, the pearly pink potion shined so pretty you wanted to take a dive.
That, if you both weren't so annoyed. Something went wrong. The color was right. The texture was good. The process was done to perfection. But still...
The idiot was standing close. Too close. Even though you inhaled deeply, all you could smell was his herbal soap, stopping you from actually smelling the potion.
As you sighed deeply, ready to tell him off, he turned to you at the same time. A deep scowl distorted his expression, his voice deep, frustration lacing his words.
"Are you daft? You know how the potion works, and still, you take a bath in your perfume before coming? I can't smell anything. How do we know if it's right!?"
You wanted to scream back at him. You really wish you put the blame right back on Severus. But instead, you blinked slowly, feeling your body going cold as the time stopped.
"Severusâ"
"I know I did everything right, what the bloody hell have youâ"
"Severus, I'm not wearing my perfume right now."
A strange sound left his throat, a mix of a gasp and a confused grunt. His eyes were wider than yours for a second. With your peripherals, you observed the way his pale hands trembled as he turned down the fire under the cauldron.
"Sorry Iâ I think you should go, nowâ" Severus muttered, his voice barely leaving his lips. You were too fast to even compute your own behavior, as you pulled on the loose green and silver tie around his neck.
"You really are an idiot." You whispered back before diving in. Even though you acted fast, the way you locked your lips to him was soft, tempting, giving him an opening to push you away, but still showing how good you can be to him, if he just allow himself.
