Fern Gully Jamaica ------------------------------------------ Fern Gully is a winding scenic stretch of road which starts in Ocho Rios and runs for three miles, ending up in the community of Colgate. The area gets its name from the wide variety of ferns which grow in the area, towering high above the road forming a shady tunnel of lush greenery. The varieties of plant life may be lost on many visitors but keen botanists will enjoy seeing approximately 300 varieties of fern in addition to other species such as Blue Mahoe and Banana trees. The roadway through Fern Gully was established in 1907 when an earthquake destroyed one of the eight rivers in the Ocho Rios area. The river bed was subsequently paved and the roadway was established. Vendors line the road, selling wooden carvings and sculptures. The area is famous for life sized sculptures of "anatomically exaggerated" males. Glistening Waters "The Luminous Lagoon" ------------------------------------------ EXPERIENCE THE BEAUTY OF NATURE Glistening Waters is Jamaica’s only natural night-time attraction. A boat ride on a truly magical bay. An experience not to be missed! Starting daily at sunset, we begin nightly boat tours of the famous Luminous Lagoon. As the boat cruises around, the water is disturbed and the organisms begin to glow. You will see an eerie light show illuminating from the back of the boat and all around from the wake. This tour of the Luminous Lagoon takes approximately 45-60 minutes. This lagoon, surrounded by mangroves, is home to microscopic organisms that emit a bio-luminescent light when agitated. The water glows a beautiful blue and becomes illuminated when these organisms are disturbed. As the fish in the lagoon swim and dart around, you can see their outlines as streaks of light, shooting around in the darkness of night. When it rains, the lagoon ‘lights up’ with the drops of water dancing on the surface. Truly an amazing experience! Plan ahead and bring a towel and swimsuit so you can take a swim during the night-time tour on the Luminous Lagoon to illuminate yourself and the waters around you. Bucket list item, for sure… The lagoon and bay is about 3-8 feet, or more, in depth. It’s relatively shallow for the area it covers. Jamaica's National Dish "Ackee n Saltfish with Roasted Breadfruit" ------------------------------------------ The Breadfruit is a common food tree in Jamaica . It was introduced from Tahiti in about 1792 by Captain William Bligh, and soon became an important food source for slaves. The first plants were established in the Bath Botanical Garden in St. Thomas . Jamaica’s staple breakfast, is a tasty and nutritious way to start the day. However, even though ackee is the national fruit of Jamaica, neither ingredient is indigenous to the island. As with so much of modern Jamaica, even the breakfast has its roots in 18th-century colonialism. The fruit is African, the fish is European, but the finished dish is definitely Jamaican. The ackee fruit, which grows on a large tree, originates in West Africa and is thought to have been brought to the Caribbean during the mid-1700s. It is easy to grow and prepare, and is one of the many African legacies of the Jamaican people. Care must be taken in the preparation of ackee due to poisonous toxins present in parts of the fruit. The outer red fruit looks something like a red bell pepper before it is fully ripe. When ripe, the fruit opens and releases some of its toxins (it shouldn’t be picked or prepared before this time). Inside the fruit there are dark coloured seeds, again not to be eaten due to toxicity, and yellow flesh — the bit that is eaten. The yellow flesh is then boiled. The fruit is so ubiquitous in Jamaica that it can be purchased fresh, in bags from street vendors, or even canned in the supermarket. During ackee season, it is normal to see people picking ackee from roadside trees to take home. Saltfish is another import and is traditionally made from cod, although today any whitefish can be used (oily fish wouldn’t work due to the drying process). The fish is prepared and then dried before being salted to preserve it. Historically, drying is the oldest form of food preservation known. The northern European nations have been drying whitefish for more than 500 years. Greenery abounds at Rick’s and collides in the most spectacular way with the deep blues of the nearby ocean on the cliffside.
