On This Day — August 15, 1868

Jewish American Samuel A. Bierfield was lynched by the Ku Klux Klan.

That night in Franklin, Tennessee, a group of masked Klansmen broke into his dry goods store hellbent on murdering the Jew. Bierfield tried to run. They caught him, dragged him into the street, and shot him point-blank five times. Four of the bullets entered his head.

His Black clerk, Lawrence Bowman, was also grabbed, dragged, shot, and left to die nearby.

No one was ever convicted. A local newspaper suggested the Jewish storeowner, as a Jew with a Black clerk, had “deserved” it.

In the chaos after the Civil War, as the Klan began its campaign of terror, a Jew and his Black employee were murdered together in the street for the crime of existing.

American soil.

Masked Klansmen.

And the first recorded lynching of a Jew in the United States.

I used to think “First they come for the Saturday people, then they come for the Sunday people” was a brilliant warning. I quoted it myself many times.

Then I realized the phrase contains the very illusion it supposedly warns against: the word “then.”

It allows Sunday people to imagine there’s a sequence. First the Jews. Then, someday, them. As long as Jews remain the primary target, they can reassure themselves: We’re not there yet.

So they sleep through their own decline, watching their country and identity disappear while comforting themselves that it’s still only Saturday.

There was never a “then.”

The Saturday people and the Sunday people were losing everything at the same time.
