Javi adjusted his glasses, and let out a small sigh. "No, I think that's about it. But I suppose if you notice anything odd, feel free to take care of it, I don't mind paying extra."

"No, no, I very specifically said DON'T follow me up there, Miss Beaumont. Perhaps there's an issue with your hearing."
So, what really is going on with you and Gwen?
“I’m not sure what you mean. Gwen is my partner, and colleague, and I love her very much.”
Would you say that you're impulsive?
"Oh, absolutely. I pride myself on being self aware, above most things. But I'm working on it."
Finding Hiro in the robotics lab was like finding a microscope in the biology lab. Normally, no one cared to check in. Normally, he managed to get out before any cleaners and whatnot entered the lab. But, sometimes, there were days like today.
Now that I’ve added this sensor in… I just need to code in the database. I think it was on…
Typing away, he didn't hear the other come in. She only looked up when the other began speaking. Blinking, she fiddled with the strings of her hoodie. It wasn’t that late, right… wait does that mean he had to stop here…? Nope, not happening. No way.
“Sorry sir! I’ll clear out when I’m done with this, I promise.”
Normally, Javi might have had less patience, and insisted they go at once. But for whatever reason -maybe it was all in the name of science- he was intrigued. "If promises were currency I would be rich. Unfortunately, they don't ignore the rules of the college." Stepping further in, Javi took a look at what they were working on.
"However... I might be willing to, if you tell me what it is you're working on."
Nani paused, mid-bite of a bacon filled everything bagel. "This isn't about the severed head in the fridge, is it?" Nani asked, deadly serious. She clocked the look on Javi's face quickly, noting that he seemed particularly… nervous about something. That was never a good thing on the Pelekai household. (Stephen and Lilo could smell fear. Javi ought to be careful.) Nani finished her bite, swallowed, and placed her bagel back on the plate. "What's up?"
Well that was certainly not the answer he expected. The scientist in him got oddly excited, though wasn't sure if she was joking or not. "The severed wha-? No, no not that. It's just that... well..." This wasn't typical. He didn't get nervous. That wasn't him. However, this wasn't exactly an easy ask. "I was wondering... what is the oldest age you've ever taught dance, to?"
After Hours
Javi was finishing up some grading in his office, when he realized that one of the papers in his stack was actually meant to go to the robotics lab. A student must have turned it in on accident, he presumed. No big deal, he would set it down in the lab to deal with tomorrow. To his surprise, when he got down there, he found he wasn't alone.
"Hey, it's way past the time that the lab is supposed to be closed. You're going to have to clear out."

Javi had been working up the courage to ask Nani this for a while now. He hadn't done so yet in fear of embarrassment. But today was the day. He was certain. And yet... as he walked down the stairs, and saw her making breakfast, he froze. You know, she seems busy, maybe I shouldn't... No, no. Just do it. "Oh Nani—!" Well, too late now. "I uh... well, is now a good time to ask you something?"

Tina had absolutely prickled. If you looked closely enough, you might see all her hair start to stand on end, and steam floating around her in contrast to the freezing cold milk aisle. Tina wasn't one to reject attention but right now, at this very moment, she wanted nothing more than to hide. "Well, you can just-- just-- wait a minute!" Things were feeling well out of her control very quickly, and now people were looking at her, expressing some seriously bad emotions. (The poor milk...)
"I am absolutely fine!" she replied, too loud for a Sunday afternoon. "I don't need any help, I know how to buy milk!"
Javi blinked slowly at the woman, silently wishing that Gwen were here only to remember that Gwen probably would have made the situation worse. He loved her, but at times she could be a bit of a... well, as his students would say, a Karen. Still... she had more of a backbone than he did.
"...Well, I was waiting... also, you've been standing there zoned out for at least three." When she yelled, Javi casually looked around, trying to decipher what he should do. "No one is questioning your ability to buy milk, ma'am... but you seem very stressed."

"I'm glad you're enjoying it," she smiled politely. "Well... There's the costume party coming up soon, that's always fun, I think." The party at Town Hall was not formal, per se, but it did attract more... Formal types, she guessed. Or at least, it carried a sense of professionalism and required an attention to detail that made Sally take it rather seriously. That meant it didn't have as many party games as your average Halloween party might.
Sally glanced at the wine glasses being offered nearby. It was probably okay, she told herself. She picked up one, but didn't drink yet. "Did you, um... Did you come here with someone else?" She had a feeling this man didn't fully come out of his own volition, not when he seemed a bit out of place, a bit unsure of how to have fun.
Javi was dressed in a costume... He and Gwen had gone as Frankenstein and his bride. He supposed that either costume could have stood on it's own, but it was likely obvious if anyone saw both of them that it was likely a couples costume. "Yes, I suppose it is... maybe I'll enter, this year. Or is that just... automatic?" He had no idea how these things worked.
"Oh, no, I came with my wife," he nodded. "She loves the holidays, and I like to support that."

"I... I think I am, yes--" Sally chuckled, looking at the man who answered, before noticing the drink he was holding. Her smile faltered. She quickly picked it back up, but she was certain the man had noticed, and that she was now starting to act a bit suspicious.
After all, it made no sense to be wary at this point, right? With all this security, there was no way anyone could even dare to try poisoning the drinks. Sally hadn't tried any yet, not even had a glass of water --even though she insisted to herself that it was perfectly alright.
"... I..." she mumbled, before clearing her throat. "Yes, well, I certainly am trying to." Sally smiled, maybe a bit too wide. "I helped organize this event, as I do with each one the town hosts. I think this one is looking up to be a pretty good one... But of course, the guests are the ones whose opinion matters."
Javi was, by all academic accounts, a smart man. But socially... well... he was getting there. He did notice that she looked down at his drink, but it took a few extra moments for it to click what she might be thinking.
"Well, I think everything looks great," he attempted to distract from the nerves with compliments, but had no idea if it was working. "You should try to have some fun. Maybe dance? Er— I'm not sure what else there is to do."

As always with any town event, Minnie was making the rounds across the town hall. Dressed as Anne Hathaway's Catwoman Minnie felt a lot more sleek than usual, dare she say it, confident.
"Can I ask what your favorite thing about the celebrations are this year?" Minnie asked to the person standing beside her.
Javi was a little out of his element. He didn’t usually go to large social events like this, but now that Gwen was back, he felt more comfortable doing so. Oddly enough, even though she had been gone for a few years doing her research, she was still his voice of reason and comfort, and whenever he had to do something less than desirable, he just thought about it in a way that she would.
“Oh, well that would be easy— the fact that my wife is back, and we can celebrate it together. She loves the holidays, and had been out of state a while doing research.”
This year, Sally's costume was decidedly more lowkey than in previous years. A lot of it was recycled from previous costumes, as per her tradition, though this time it could barely be called 'original'. Some sort of bat costume, inspired by old 1930s patterns --but without the level of effort she would usually put into it.
Anyway. Sally was going around Town Hall, a bit unnerved by the amount of security present at the party. It made sense --who knew if the culprit of those poisonings had any associates still on the loose...? And to add to all that, there was the unshakeable feeling Sally had that, despite having captured the supposed responsible of the poisonings, something was wrong. Missing, even. It had been too easy.
"These canapés are quite good, aren't they?" she commented to someone standing nearby, trying to distract herself.
Javi wasn't always one for parties, but he knew that Gwen loved them, and now that she was back, they were making more effort to spend time together both because they'd truthfully missed one another, and to keep the public image of their "marriage" in a positive light. So here he was, at the Hootenanny, doing his best to be social.
"Oh, I suppose so, yes," Javi nodded, holding a drink in his hand. "Are you enjoying the event thus far, aside from that?"

"Biology!" Chelsea repeated, opening her eyes wide. "Fascinating. You know, I was pretty good at Chemistry, back in my day. Not to toot my own horn, of course." She had an inkling of a suspicion that it had to be some scientific subject. Having been right, she was obviously glad that her instincts were as sharp as ever. "What's your favorite area of study? Botany, Zoology, Biotechnology...?"
Chelsea squinted at him as soon as he made that little awkward sound, as soon as he began adjusting his collar. Along with being good at guessing, she was also pretty good at knowing the tells of when someone was likely lying. "Hm, perhaps," she grinned. "Man, I wish I knew what song that had been. I've been humming it ever since last week, just can't get it out of my head. A veritable earworm."
Talking to strangers wasn't his favorite thing in the world. But talking about science, now that was his absolute favorite. "Well, I dabble in all areas, but my special interests are Bio-chem, Molecular biology, and genetics." He could go on and on, surely, but he had to be careful as to not reveal too much.
Javi's cheeks started to feel a bit warm, now. Was he sweating? He couldn't be sure, but he did his best to play it cool. "I dunno, I guess you'll just know it when you hear it again, hm?" He started to look at his list again, anything to divert attention from that little karaoke incident.
When they had first met, Javi had often brushed off her rambling. She was sure that he didn't even listen at all. So it was a pleasant surprise now to hear his chuckling and affirmative noises throughout her ramblings. It made her chest feel warm, similarly to how she felt when she was with Kevin.
But that was her boyfriend and this was her-- husband. Fake husband, she forced herself to internally emphasize. Nothing more.
Maybe nothing less, either.
She nodded along but at the news of Nani, her mouth dropped. "What?!" She exclaimed in total disbelief. "Two years and they're still not together?" Gwen was so sure they were right on the edge of a breakthrough by the time she had left. Clearly, the lack of her influence sent them tumbling back down the hill and she'd have a long way pushing that boulder back up.
It was enough of a shock that she didn't seem to notice that he pulled back on saying something else. Instead, she brightened at his last words. "Really? You managed not to fail everyone this time around? Do you think the students are actually getting better or are you just going soft?" She joked.

Javi had picked up on some lingo, teaching college students over the years. Some of it he began using without even realizing, and others, intentionally. "I guess they are enjoying the slow burn," he shrugged. It was definitely an odd situation to watch. While he didn't have a ton of relationship experience, he thought it would be more straightforward than this.
The question of whether or not he was getting soft took him by surprise. Javi two years ago would absolutely deny this, and perhaps would in turn become more harsh in his standards. But now... it made him laugh. "I suppose I've gotten softer with age... but only a bit. Ten percent, nothing more."
Truth be told, it wasn't just his students who'd gotten him to soften up a bit, but he couldn't possibly disclose that at this moment.

Deziree was starting to realise that 'going unnoticed' in this job was proving futile. Every second customer knew her by name, which would have been a good thing in any other setting, and every fifth asked about her mother. Deziree poured the piping hot coffee, attempting a sincere smile.
"Would you like sugar or creamer?"
Whenever Javi was having a particularly hard time grading, he would always sit down with a nice cup of coffee to help clear his head. He was hoping that could be the case now. When she asked if he wanted any sugar or creamer, he paused. Normally, he would not add those to his coffee, but today... was he feeling... adventurous? "Sure, why not. Just a little bit, I'm usually more of a bold flavor person."
