[tw; implied miscarriage, infidelity, violence]
Things had always seemed to come easily for Javier. He grew up in a loving family with a brother and sister. His grades in school were average. He fell in love young and swift in high school and never looked back.
He took over ownership of the family auto shop, working long hours to make a nice nest egg for his future family. After he was married to his high school sweetheart not long after graduation, the couple decided to take the next logical step in their relationship and have a child. Javier had always wanted kids of his own, after all, so when the idea was proposed they were both all in for it. However, the pieces of his perfect life started to crumble bit by bit as their attempts at conceiving a baby proved futile. After investing money in several rounds of treatment and getting excited for a coming child only to lose the dream once again - it weighed heavily on both of their shoulders.
Taking on extra shifts at the auto shop and working longer nights in an attempt to make up the money they’d spent, Javier found it more and more difficult to return home knowing they had lost another child - and knowing that his wife probably needed his support now than ever before and he couldn’t seem to figure out how to provide it. Instead, it was far easier to throw himself into work than let himself feel. Not to mention, he missed her. He missed what they’d once had before all of this. It felt as if they’d put their entire relationship on hold and that with all their attempts to conceive, they’d distanced from one another. He missed their casual affection - and by accident, he found it in someone else. It had been a mistake as soon as it happened; just a random woman in a bar that gave him that affection he’d been craving from his wife for seemingly too long.
Javi planned to tell her as soon as it happened, but by the time he got up the courage, she was pregnant and the time simply didn’t seem right. Then the days turned to weeks, turned to months - and the secret spoiled on his tongue. He didn’t want to submit her to any unnecessary stress by bringing it up. Besides, it had only been a one time mistake. It hadn’t meant anything. He loved his wife, his family.
Of course, such ugly secrets had a way of getting out. He’s not even sure how she found out, but how didn’t matter so much as what came next. She’d kicked him out of the house, refused to see or hear him out. Time passed, slipping through his fingers, as he tried to pick up the pieces and put his relationship back together again. But the pieces no longer seemed to fit. The harder he pushed, the more she pulled away. He ended up moving in with his sister for a time when it seemed that repairing his relationship may not be possible.
When the virus began to spread, Javi and his siblings held up in his garage to wait it out, assuming whatever was going on would simply pass with a little time. But soon enough the place was overrun by the dead and they found themselves constantly on the move, looting shops for foot and supplies and managing with little more than a truck that had been getting work done at the shop and his motorcycle as a means of travel. They picked up survivors here and there in their travels, put together a ragtag sort of group, but lost most of them along the way - either due to the dead or otherwise getting separated.
It wasn’t until they came across a larger group of survivors that things really took a turn for the worse. Demands were made to hand over all of their gear and supplies. Knowing it would leave them as good as dead without what little they had, Javi put up a fight. He managed to take out a few of the men before he was shot and restrained, dragged off to the groups camp as a prisoner. In the frenzy he lost sight of his siblings - but could only assume they’d been killed or left for dead when he didn’t see them again.
The loss of his family came as a shock, giving him very little left to fight for. But, being stubborn as he was, he didn’t bend to the commands of the survivors who captured him. Nothing they could do would be any worse than the hell he was already living in.
Over time he started devising a plan to escape the camp, along side a few of the other captives and the help of an inside man who fled alongside them. They put as much distance as they could between themselves and the camp they’d left behind, but injuries alongside hordes of the dead put a stop to their mission time and again. When they finally stumbled upon Fairvale they sought refuge in the camp, intending it to only be for a short period of time to recover before continuing. But soon enough the days stretched on into months, and the comforts provided by the safe haven have proven more difficult to leave behind than expected.
