The Flying Dutchman is a ghost ship protagonist of a widespread legend around the world. According to tradition it is a ship that could not return to port, and was condemned to wander the world's oceans forever. If another ship finds it and hails it, it will also be condemned to wander the ocean waters. According to some chroniclers, it was the Dutch captain Bernard Foke who inspired this legend. Fokke was famous for the strange cruising speed he reached in his voyages, and many spread the rumor that he made a pact with the devil to achieve such speeds. Numerous writers have based some of their stories on this legend. Edgar Allan Poe, Washington Irving, Richard Wagner or Frederick Marryat were some of these geniuses who wrote formidable literary works creating a genre such as that of ghost ships. The Screaming Skull is a horror story by American writer Francis Marion Crawford (1854-1909), originally published in the July 11, 1908 issue of Collier magazine and later re-edited in the 1911 anthology: Uncanny Tales. We are undoubtedly before one of F. Marion Crawford's great horror stories. The plot tells the story of a murder and a mysterious skull that refuses to remain silent. Narrated in a single voice, the descriptions of the possible slitting of the victims' throats by the bony teeth of this skull are particularly terrifying scenes. The Fall of the House of Usher is a horror story by American writer Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), published in the September 1839 issue of Burton's Gentleman's Magazine, and later in the 1840 anthology Tales of the Grotesque and Arabesque. It is undoubtedly one of Poe's best stories. Elements such as morbidity, necrophilia, incestuous impulses, opium, and an unbridled setting make this tale a true gem of the genre. The plot tells the story of a man who arrives at the house of his friend, Roderick Usher. There in the mansion Roderick's sister, Madeline, has died; and according to the wishes of the deceased, her body must remain in the ancient crypt beneath the Usher House for two weeks before being buried. As the reading progresses, the sinister events that occur in its pages seem to echo in the House of Usher, whose crevices emit deep groans in the darkness. Finally, Madelaine emerges from her grave, perhaps she was buried alive (Poe's great obsession), or perhaps she was already a ghost. In any case, Madelaine will claim bloody revenge against her brother. Lady Madelaine is the queen of clubs in our deck of ghost stories.
