riots are bad. no ifs, ands, or buts about it—riots are unoquivically bad. but, according to american history, they get shit done.

many of us on tumblr are lgbt, and what started the lgbt movement in america? stonewall, a riot against police brutality that resulted in the burning of a building. sound familiar? without that riot, no one knows where we’d be.

martin luther king jr once said that a riot is the language of the unheard. after years of peaceful protest and violent response (being tear gassed), these people on the streets in minneapolis have realized that they’re going unheard, so they’ve done the only logical thing left to do. they riot because they’re desperate to be heard, and now we’re hearing them.

riots are bad, but murder is worse. we can only hope that these riots will create change like so many others in our history.
