They were in Muggle Studies, and Jayne was watching the back of Michael's head when Alecto Carrow called him up. He stood with a casual grace, hands in his pockets but his muscles coiled, like he was waiting for something, and her stomach lept and jerked like a puppet on strings. He stood in front of the teacher, his face completely calm, which seemed to make her more furious.
"Take your hands out of your pockets," she snapped, and he did so with a shrug. Jayne began to take more notice - before she thought he was just beign told off for a bad essay, which was hardly unusual, but the honest fury in the teacher's voice made her begin to worry.
"What," Alecto Carrow snarled, her voice shaking, "is this?" She shook a piece of parchment in his face, and Michael rocked back on his heels a bit. Jayne recognised, though she was too far away to read the words, the slope of his handwriting, as familiar to her as her own.
"It's my homework," Michael replied, and then added, a wry smile twisting his lips that made her stomach do flip-flops, "or rather, more accurately, a letter explaining why I didn't do my homework."
Everyone was listening now. Jayne felt Evie, sitting next to her, tense.
"And what does it say?" Carrow said, her voice quiet and dangerous.
"What, haven't you read it?"
Her wand flew out and slashed downwards with careless force, ripping into his shirt, across his bicep. Red began to bleed into the white as his hand flew to it, his mouth opening involuntarily in shock. Jayne felt Evie grab her hand, and realised she was shaking.
"What does it say?" Carrow repeated. Michael was holding himself stiffly now, no longer casual, anger in every line of his body. Behind him, Jayne saw Seamus Finnigan swear under his breath, his quill dripping ink unheeded onto his paper.
"It simply explains," Michael said, his voice tight with barely controlled fury, "why I felt that your essay question was against my personal beliefs. In the official school constitution it states that if a student clearly and concisely sets out their reasons for not completing-"
"I will not be lectured by a school boy!"
Evie's hand shot out to grab the back of Jayne's shirt as she went to stand, though she wasn't certain of what she was going to do.
"Stand down, Mike," Neville Longbottom said, to Jayne's left. Michael glanced back and shook his head slightly.
"I will not suffer insolence," Alecto Carrow said, walking out from behind her desk. Jayne, sitting and shaking, remembered him telling her that she would never touch his face, and felt abruptly sick with fear for him. Was this love, feeling like you'd rather die than see them hurt?
