She was like an old car.  Not the old, rusty, beat up kind.  But a classic.  Her parts were rare, her body clean, her engine smooth, and her paint job pristine. Her miles are high, but she has seen the world, through headlights that gleam, into serene darkness, that others haven’t been lucky enough to see.  She shines brighter than models of today’s day and age.  The pages of her manual, tattered from going to places that never mattered, and all the maintenance that had to happen; seatbelts fastened, traveling in the fast lane, to get to a destination that always seemed to change.  Her chrome was shiny, and her indiscretions were tiny, a few scratches and dents never compared to all the places she went, and all the time that was spent on open roads, anywhere to go, with an attitude only the driver would know.  She was golden; a classic.  That would make anyone want to have it, but only few will appreciate her magic, for her engine doesn’t run for just anyone.  She needs someone to take care and pride, in her inside, and who will be willing to ride wherever the night sky wants her drive.

“Oh Shit, this isn’t going to end well.”
I always said I would learn to cook for a girl I loved, problem was, they were never hungry.  So now all they get is buttered toast and coffee. It was never my intention to be a hopeless romantic, I in fact, became quite the opposite.  Romantically hopeless. All of my endeavors have fallen short of expectation, and now I sit here making tally marks of all the moments in my life, I should’ve done something different. I don’t have any regrets, but I know that I’ve made mistakes.  Some bigger than others, and some were actually fun to make at the time.  That moment of “Oh shit, this isn’t going to end well”, is a never ending motif in my love life. I laugh at it now but at the time, it was always the end of the world.  Example: I dated a girl once. Everything was fantastic.  Until one night she didn’t come home.  And as a level-headed individual I didn’t over react. All I did was leave my house at 3 in the morning to go looking for her. Naturally of course.  In the moonlight, in all of my intoxicating glory, I came upon her car parked in the driveway of her ex boyfriend’s house.  Now I, as a completely rational person, decided it was a good idea to knock on the door, while of course I wasn’t sobbing or anything, I clearly through my tears, asked if my girlfriend was in the house.  He, being a completely objective 3rd party person, had no idea.  After he initially threatened me because I was on his property, he settled down and simply said, “I’m sorry I didn’t know anyone was here.”  At the point, in all of my anger I left the premises and proceeded to the gas station, knowing damn well I didn’t have any money.  I figured it was an emergency though, and it was well justified.  I approached the counter, asked for a pack of smokes, pulled out my debit card, and swiped it.  The first time I over-drafted my checking account.  And then I thought to myself, “Oh shit, this isn’t going to end well.”
I always said I'd learn to cook for a girl I loved. Problem was, they were never hungry.

Walls
She made me do things I never wanted to do. I remember her explaining sex to be before I even went through puberty.  I reacted exactly as a child would.  I was horrified and didn’t understand how people could get pleasure from something that sounded so awful and so painful.  But she spent the entire duration of our relationship grooming me to believe it was in fact a good thing, no matter who it was with.  Reminding me that I should be grateful for advances from older men, and training me how to flirt and look older than I was.  I was 9 years old, when the word “sex” became a dirty word to me. Taking myself out of the equation and looking at my story now as an adult, I can safely say that what happened to me as a child, shaped not only my personality, but forever changed how I build a relationship with someone. Trust is not easily acquired, and safety in the arms of someone I love, is not something I believe in. Safety frightens me, because safety always brought me turmoil.  I’ve never been protected before, so as a child, I built walls around me that nobody has ever been able to break through or climb over.

Love shouldn’t be A measure of pleasure. But rather something, You can hold on to and treasure (wherever) Happily never after, It’s easy to capture a moment, When you blow it up And expose it. Hold it up to the mirror, So you can see it clear. This love was never supposed to be here. Everything has changed But the negatives’ the same. It’s a mixture of emotions That make up a bigger picture. In a whole different game. It illuminates your soul, In the dark it glows. The pain you’re going through, Is the kind no one’s ever known. Perhaps it was home grown, Through every crevasse and crack. You watered it and loved it, Til it didn’t want you back. A victim to the night, Darkness surrounds you. Wondering how all this Craziness, Ever got around you. And a hold of you, It didn’t even know you. So you fight in the night time, To get a moment of peace, A moment of sleep, Where you can put all your Bullshit to sleep. But it creeps, Like a bad dream. Trying to find comfort, Somewhere in between. Always bittersweet, Tender and mean. What the hell did this pain, Ever want to do with me? I’m conscious, but I’m lost. Got a map in my hand, But the paths are crossed. If I leave it up to my heart, I’ll never find a way back. But if I listen to my mind, I’ll find, A better place, Than where I was at. And that’s the struggle. Each and every day. I have to know which one to silence, And which one knows the way.

Like a flood inside my soul, her essence drowned every part of me that has ever survived.  Submerging me in empty truths and bittersweet dreams of future nightmares.  Her love wraps its cold fingers around my neck and squeezes every ounce of beauty out of me.  And without flinching, she tells me she’ll never hurt me.  But little does she know, every one of her words stabs me like a knife in the back, each one pushed in a little further than the one before.  Becoming harder and harder to breathe; every promise like a pill nearly impossible to swallow.  Reality devouring my very being, as if I never existed at all.
She didn’t speak with elegance, nor did she filter the thoughts between her brain and her mouth.  And that’s what I loved about her most.  She came into my life with such intensity, I swear it knocked me right off my feet.  She didn’t know it then, but I loved her at hello.  Something about her drew me in, like a fresh canvas does an artist with a new set of paints.  But like the artist, I refused to begin painting right away, for fear of ruining it.  It needed to be handled meticulously, with care and with good intentions.  I was inspired to create a masterpiece, for she was nothing short of the Mona Lisa.  Immediately I wanted to do all I could, to convince her that her smile could out shine all the stars in the sky, and light up every piece of darkness in the world.  I felt the weight of all the burdens I’ve ever carried, be lifted off my shoulders, the moment she told me she loved me.  It’s as if every pain I’ve ever felt, no longer brought me misery, but brought me appreciation.  For looking back at it, I went through all that I have to become the person I am today; the person she fell in love with.  I wouldn’t trade any of it for the world, because that’s what she has become.  My world.
