This is the first few pages of Side B of the new Dazai novel, which was given out as free bonus for those who come to the cinema to watch the BEAST live action movie in Japan.
I said on Twitter that I will not spoil Side B any time soon, but as I have finished the translation for the first part of Side A, I think there is already enough context to move on with this one. Actually, it's pretty interesting to read and compare between 2 sides.
For that reason, I HIGHLY recommend you to read the first 3 parts of Side A that I have translated first, before moving on to this one, for better understanding. You can find the link to the tag with all Side A translations I have done in my pinned post.

A bloody corpse of a young man is lying on my front porch.
I look down at the corpse, then at the front of the house. It is a quiet morning. The apartment across the street is casting a long black shadow on the pavement in front of me. The trumpet vines planted in the hedge are rustling in the breeze, and whispering to each other in a way that human cannot decipher. Somewhere in the distance, I can hear the sound of the long-distance trucks scraping against the road surface. And there is a corpse in the middle of the stairs in front of me.
In any case, to our eyes, a corpse is always a strangely exaggerated presence. But this time it is different. This corpse blends in with the landscape, becoming one with the everyday peaceful morning scenery. After a while, I realize the reason. The corpseâs chest is moving up and down faintly. It is not a corpse, it is alive.
I look at the young man. He is all black. A high-collar black cloak, a three-piece suit, a black tie. The things that are not black are his button-down shirt, and the bandages around his head. This one is a mottled color of white and red. This color pattern reminds me of some ominous Chinese prophetic characters. The place he is lying is the middle of the stairs that leads to the front porch. The blood stains continuing down the cracked concrete stairs looks like he has been crawling.
Question. What should I do with this nearly-corpse in front of my eyes?
The answer is simple. If I touch him with the tips of my toes and put some weight on him, he will just roll down to the ground below. If I do so, then he will not be on my premise anymore. He will be on a public road. The countryâs territory. All those who are in trouble within the territory of the country should be saved by the mercy of the country. An ordinary postman like me should go home and have breakfast.
I am not doing that because I am a cold and heartless person. I am doing that because it is a survival necessity. The young manâs wounds are clearly from gunshots. He has been shot multiple times. There are probably more holes in his body than I can see from here.
I look at the young man, at the road, and the sky, and at him again.
And then I start to act. First, I approach the guy and lift him up by his sides. Then I drag him by his heels into the house and lay him down on the wall-mounted bed. He is much lighter than he looks. Carrying him alone is not that much of a trouble. I check his wounds. There are many deep wounds, and the bleeding is not usual, but if he receives immediate proper treatment, it is not like he will die.
I take out my medical kit box from the back of the closet, and give him some simple first aid treatments. I put a towel under his upper body, cut his clothes with a pair of scissors to expose the wounds, and check if there is any bullet left inside. In order to stop the blood flow, I apply pressure on the pressure points: below the armpits, inner elbows, ankles, backs of knees, and tie them tightly with a clean cloth. Then I put disinfected tourniquets to the wounds to stop the bleeding. Fortunately for him, I can do this kind of first aid even with my eyes closed.
After I am done with the treatment, I look down at the young man and cross my arms. His breathing has stabilized. His respiratory system and bones seem to be intact. But he does not seem to be waking up. âItâs fine already, just kick him out.â, I can hear the angelâs voice in my head. There is nothing more stupid than treating a suspicious guy like this. I guess I should listen to that voice. That is what a wise man would do.
Before following the angelâs advice, I take another look at the young man. I donât recognize his face. Probably not someone I know. I say probably, because the bandages covering most of his face makes it impossible to make out his features.
I feel an uneasiness in my chest.
There is something strange about this young man. It is impossible to say that seeing someone covered in blood in front of your house is not strange, but I am feeling a completely different kind of discomfort than when I first saw him. I go around and look at his face. His eyes are closed. His face is pale and tired. His breathing is so faint that it is hard to tell without paying close attention. But still, I feel a strange power coming from his presence. Itâs like will power, a certain sense of trust in his own body. And more specifically, rightâŠ
It is as if the whole thing about him collapsing here is all according to his plan.
The young man opens his eyes and looks at me.
I am startled and jump up. I didnât notice when he opened his eyes at all. He moves without any sign of movement. He looks without a sign of looking. He seems to be one of âthose peopleâ, the kind of people you will never encounter if you are to lead a normal life.
Those eyes.
Iâm not a person with an excellent observation skill. But even so, just by looking at those eyes, I understand a few things right away. He probably has killed before. Not one or two digits. Hundreds of people. When you have killed that many people, you will reach the other side of the mentality that ordinary humans can possess, beyond the other shore where neither light nor gravity can reach. The spirit of those who have reached that state will be seen first in their eyes, then in their mouth. Their eyeballs become black holes, and the muscles around their mouth become organs to show the depth of their sin, not their facial expressions.
And I also know one more thing instantly.
This young man knows me.
âWho are you?â
I ask without thinking.
The voice coming out of my mouth is so cracked, I cannot believe that itâs my own voice. If I didnât hold my leg strong, it would have backed up a step on its own.
âWho are you?â
I ask again. There is no answer. I donât even know if he is listening. Because the light in his eyes show no reactions to my question. No matter how cold-hearted a person is, if you look at him in the eyes and throw words at him, you can still see some kind of responses. But this young man does not have any of that. Just black eyes looking at where my figure is.
I cannot say anything much in details, but I associate this young man with a certain state.
There is no heart here. Just a heart-shaped emptiness.
Just as I am thinking this, the young man opens his mouth. He is trying to say something.
To make sure I do not miss anything, I stare at his lips and listen carefully.
But he doesnât say anything. He just opens his mouth in a certain way. He doesnât say anything. He doesnât show any emotions. He just changes the shape of his lips. Thatâs it.
âDo you know me?â I try asking. âWhy did you collapse in front of my house? How did you get all those wounds?â
The young man looks at me. He opens his mouth and breathes in as if he is going to say something, but he ends up not saying anything. His mouth is quietly closed, together with a sign that it should not have been opened from the beginning.
Maybe he cannot speak? Aphasia, or probably congenital speech impediment. People can lose their voices for various reasons. Mental reasons, brain conditions. Having their throat burn in a fire, or having their pharynx removed through surgeries. However, I feel that none of those applies to this young man. There is a sign that he has been suppressing the sounds coming right up to his throat.
He can speak but he doesnât.
âItâs okay if you donât want to talk. But if I leave you untreated, you will die. Do you understand what Iâm saying?â
He doesnât reply. Those eyes are filled with a quiet emptiness. From that, I assume that he is listening. Because if he is deaf, there should be a reasonable amount of confusion and signs of claiming that he cannot hear.
âTo treat you, or to kick you out, it is up to me to decide. As long as you donât speak, you have no rights to decide. Is that okay? If itâs not, say something.â
The young man stares at me. A few seconds, then tens of seconds. Then he gently looks away and closes his eyes. Quietly, emotionlessly.
He can hear, he can speak. The reason he does not talk is because his door is closed. A door built of thick, huge iron that will not open now matter how hard you try.
âI see. Then I will do as I like.â
I say, my words echoing in the emptiness and dropping into the corner of the room, in the middle of nowhere.
And so begins my communal life between me and the young man.
Strictly speaking, it cannot be called a communal life. It cannot even be called nursing. Itâs more like an adjustment work, a monitoring work, and a maintenance work. If I dare to put it in a terribly devious way, it is like keeping a fish. After all, the young man just lies in bed and hardly moves all day. Except for eating and going to the toilet, he is not stirring a muscle. He doesnât react to what I say or do. It saves me some effort, but it does not feel like dealing with a human at all. I do not expect to hear words of gratitude, and it is a lot easier than dealing with rampages or complaints, but it makes me feel restless all the time. I have never experienced something like this in my life.
There is just one time, when I try to change the bandage that covers most of his face, do I get a strong resistance. That is such a quick reaction that I cannot even imagine. He quickly grabs my wrist as I try to change the bandage. His other body parts do not move at all. It is just like his hand only has turned into another creature and attacked me.
In fact, that bandage should be changed. The bandage that covers most of his face has turned gray in places, and the blood stains have darkened into a gloomy color. From a hygienic point of view, it is not in a condition for an injured person to wear. So I try to change it no matter what, but he is still resisting so stubbornly that I eventually give up. So, his silence itself is a convenient thing. But somehow, I cannot get rid of the feeling that I have been put on a boat without knowing where it is going.
The time the cops appear at my house, is one of those times.

SPOILERS AHEAD
The underground bunker is long and intricate, like the inside of an unknown underworld creature.
Dazai and I put our hands on the damp wall and moves forward, the dim light being our only hint. Occasionally, black insects would scurry away near our hands. We can hear the sound of water dripping somewhere.
A wind is blowing inside the shelter. It is a cold and moist wind that smells depressing like someoneâs breath. Dazai and I follow the direction of the wind.
âEven if we can get out of here,â Dazai says as he walks behind me. âIt doesnât mean that they will give up on the âpaintingâ just like that. You will need some kind of measures, unless you are going to move every week. What do you think?â
âNothing in particular. There is no need to move either.â I reply as I move forward. âI have been attacked quite a few times for things related to my past. But I have always managed to get out of it somehow. This time too, I will live until I die.â
âThat is such a wise way to live.â Dazai sighs.
I understand what Dazai wants to say. But in my case, if my past is coming for me, there is a part of me that wants to give up and let it do what it wants. How should I call it? Guilt? Or atonement? I donât know.
However, if it will involve people around me like this time, I canât just keep philosophizing like that. As Dazai has said, it might be time to come up with some countermeasures.
âDazai, if it were you, what would you do for a countermâŠâ
I turn around. Dazai is not there, at the spot I expected him to be.
He is far behind, crouching down, with his hand on the wall of the corridor.
âSorry but ⊠can you⊠just go aheadâŠâ Dazai says with a shallow breath. âI will⊠take a break and⊠chase after you.â
His face is pale. His fingertips are trembling.
I rush back to Dazai and put my hand on his side to support him. His body is as cold as ice.
âWhat happened?â

I return Dazai to the floor, and the moment I stand up to check his symptoms, I see the future.
A flash of light. Sound of wind.
Then Dazaiâs chest bursts open, his ribs pop out, and on his chest blooms a huge flower of blood.

That is a bullet.
I grab Dazaiâs neck and pull him vigorously. Dazai falls forward. A bullet shoots through the space where Dazai was just a second ago, landing on the wall behind us and making a damp sound.
I drag Dazai out of the corridor, hiding ourselves behind a concrete pillar. There are several bad things that can happen in life, but being targeted by an enemy with a gun from a far distance in a closed underground corridor is definitely one of them. Not to mention being unarmed, with an injured person who cannot move.
âI have underestimated you a little bit.â
From the other side of the corridor behind the pillars, comes a familiar voice. The ex-cop with gray hair. There is a strong dilatoriness of someone who has been used to making people wait in his movement. It is a kind of power that older cops always have.
âWe gave your bandage friend some percutaneous poison when he passed out. His limbs will become numb and he wonât be able to scratch his own head for a while.â
The guy has a gun. A double-action revolver. Five bullets. A standard police pistol.
That gun is not pointing to anyone. The guy just plays with it in his hand as he speaks in a boastful voice.
âRaise your hands and come here. Or you can die protecting your friend. Up to you.â
I quickly check my surroundings. This is a big storage room. It used to be a huge space for storing water and food for evacuation. Now it is just a huge empty space with nothing stored inside. The pillars that are too big for a single person to hold, are lining up like lifeless ancient soldiers. There are a total of four entrances on every wall. And the corridors beyond them are submerged in darkness.
There are no tools that can be of any use, nor a safe route to escape.
âDo you want money that much?â I ask as I casually shift my standing position to cover for Dazai.
âI understand what you mean. Money, money, money. Every one of us is too tied up by money. We donât think money is more important than life though. You think so too, right? Thatâs why, donât throw away your life, just spit out where the painting is. There is no way a mere liaison at the bottom of the organization should give up his life for the money, right?â
As if those words are the intro for a piece of music, men with guns appear one after another. Four, then eight, then twelve of them. Some in suits, some in security uniforms, some in urban camouflaged clothes. They come in all different forms but share the same tired, worn-out and cold expression. Their weapons include automatic guns, rifles, and shotguns. On this side, we are unarmed. It is not a difference in strength that we can manage. Moreover, Dazai is injured. They probably have taken Dazai with me for this reason. In other words, they needed a hostage.
The guy smiles a graceful and cold smile at the overwhelming difference in force. âYou might have heard already, but we all were once police officials. The police in this country are excellent. However, it is hard to say that we are always rewarded for that excellence. We live off a low wage that is completely out of proportion to the danger we face at work. And the nation pretends not to see this contradiction. However, we donât want to become parts of the public who just complain to the press and politicians without doing nothing, like pigs. So, we take action. We will take what we deserve with our own hands. That is why, the âpaintingâ that you know of is like a little blessing to those who maintain the countryâs order. Isnât that an honor?â
The ex-cop holds out his arms as if he is intoxicated by his own speech, as if he were the only messenger who just received a mission from God.
I donât know why but from those words and expressions, I start to hate the guy. Up till this point, I havenât felt any like or dislike towards him, even when he beat me, kidnapped me, or tortured me. This is a rare thing for me. Whether I dislike someone or not does not have much of an impact on this world though.
âWell wellâŠâ I hear a bored sigh, so I look back. That sigh is from Dazai. âIt is a pain listening to small flies running their mouths. I want to get out of here as soon as possible. I am thirsty.â
There is a tinge of danger in the guyâs eyes. âYou donât seem to understand the situation here.â
All the men point their guns at Dazai.
âOda Sakunosuke-kun, if you donât want that boy to be killed, surrender obediently. We will have to have a long talk with you.â
I look at the guy, then at Dazai. âIf I surrender, will you let Dazai go?â
The guy thinks for a moment before he finally nods. âOkay. That boy has no value to us to begin with. All we need is your head and your mouth.â
I slowly look at all of them and scratch the behind of my ears with my fingers. There is no meaning to that action. Then I hold up my hands and say, âGot it. I surrender.â
The man's lips quirks up as if he is trying to hide his joy.
Another ex-cop steps up and cuffs my hands.
âTie him up properly this time, so that he canât escape.â
I look at Dazai. Dazai looks back at me with a somewhat discontent face but he doesnât say anything.
âOkay, Oda Sakunosuke-kun, come this way. Let us prepare some fine wine for you. It is going to be a long talk.â
He takes the chain of the handcuff and pulls me toward him. He then throws a glance at Dazai and tells his subordinate as if he does not give a damn. âFinish off that bandage bratâ.
âYou promised different.â I say.
âPromise?â the guy raises his eyebrows somewhat happily. âOh, I indeed broke my promise. How about you then? We are the keepers of the law. Are you saying you have been obeying the rules without breaking a single one in your life?â
I recall about my past self and say, âI see.â
âItâs not the time to be convinced.â Dazai says with a flat voice.
âI know.â I say. âDazai, I am just like you. I am thirsty too. Letâs get out of here quickly.â
âHow are you going to get out of here?â A gun was pointed at my head. âWith this difference in numbers, you are unarmed, with an injured hostage? You are just a worthless underling, yet you are getting quite full of yourself just because you used to be in that organization.â
âHahahh! âGetting quite full of yourself just because you used to be in that organizationâ?â It is a laughter that strangely lacks depth. I look at Dazai. âIt is not a good idea to swear at a mirror.â
Everyone glares at Dazai. Dazai does not seem to care about those glares at all. He slowly looks around and continues.
âHow about I tell you why I went and collapsed in front of his house in the first place? Because I knew of a rumor. That no evils can come close to that house, be it burglars, smugglers, or mafia. No matter who it is, it is just around that house that they canât cause any troubles. It is a âcalm-zoneâ. It is as if they are afraid of something, or someone there.â
âHuh? WhatâŠâ
âIt seems that these guys donât plan to let us out of here alive. So, Iâll leave the rest to you.â
As soon as he says those words, Dazai leans straight back, like a signboard losing its support. He falls parallel to the floor, making a loud noise.
Everyone looks at him in awe. He is completely on his back. In other words, he is in the position with the lowest chance of getting hit by a stray bullet.
That is the signal.
<This part is summarized: Oda grabs the guy who is holding the chain of his handcuff to make him lose his balance and throws him on the floor. He steals the gun and starts fighting the armed men. They keep shooting bullets at him but he manages to dodge and takes them down one by one. A guy who used to be in the Special Forces gives Oda a hard time, but he defeats the guy and manages to steal another gun from him.>
Now that I have a gun on both of my hands, it is not time to fight anymore. From here on, it is time to dance. A bullet rushes in. I stand up, almost closing my eyes and fire from both hands. Two shots forward, two shots horizontally with both arms spread out, two shots backwards like a pair of wings. I then cross my arms in front of my chest and fire two more. Flashes of light illuminate the room, and capture the world with their shadows. Finally, I align my guns and fires two more shots forward.
A bunch of golden bullet shells fall onto the floor, producing a clear, brass-like tone. That is the signal for the finale.
I hold the guns and stand still, waiting for the next moves. For someone to yell and hold their weapons and roar into the room. But no-one is coming. No-one is getting up, no-one is fighting back.
The only one who is standing in the room is me.
Everyone is on the floor, groaning. They have all been shot in both arms, or legs, or shoulders, and are bleeding and suffering in agony. But no-one is dying.
âThat is amazing.â The voice sounds really amazed. I turn to where it came from and see Dazai walking toward me. âNo-one is dying. They are badly wounded being shot in arms and legs but they are not dying. Just what kind of magic did you use?â
âI shot them so that they wouldnât die.â I answer honestly.
âHuh?â Dazai shrugs. âNo no that is not what I mean. I mean why you did what you did⊠but whatever. I will ask you later. Really, there are so many things I want to hear from you. Letâs get out of here first.â
âDazai.â I call out to him as he walks in front of me. âCount to two, then take one step to the left.â
Dazai turns to look at me and, after a brief pause, leans over then moves horizontally to the left.
A bullet passes through the place where Dazai was. It comes from the ground. Apparently one of the guys have got up and tried to shoot Dazai. It is the ex-cop who tortured me earlier. Come to think of it, he is the only one I did not shoot. I just knocked him down with a throw.
I want to fire back but I just run out of bullets now.
Before he can shoot a second time, I throw the gun. With a flick of my wrist, the gun flies horizontally towards the guy as if it is being sucked in. The two guns collide, and both are thrown away. The guy groans.
âDamn it!â He holds his hand as he screams. âWhat are you? What in the world are you?â
I have no reason to answer that question. Not to anyone in here. But after a little thought, I open my mouth.
âThe legendary assassin organization. There was no such thing from the very beginning.â
âWhat?â
âYou said you couldnât find any member of the organization but me. Of course. From the beginning, the track records that you guys know of were not left by an organization.â
The look of comprehension and astonishment slowly spreads on the guyâs face.
âYou⊠alone?â He goes limp after those words. Gradually, the fear starts to appear on his face. âYou are saying that the organization that spread so much awe, so many urban legends, the organization so fearsome that even the government didnât want to touch⊠was the work of⊠only you?â
I pick up a submachine gun at the back of the room and stand in front of the guy. This gun is made in the Middle East and can shoot up to ten bullets per second. It holds a ferocious destructive power that should be described as grinding off a body, rather than making holes on it.
âDo you have any last words?â
I point the gun at him.
The guyâs expression freezes.
I know very well what he is seeing. When you face a gun, you become unable to see anything but the blackness and the shine of that muzzle.
âYou have messed up with the wrong person this time. In this world, those who make mistakes will have to pay for it. The same price that all the people you have killed so far had paid.
âWait! Wait! Donât shoot!â The man screams. He wants to run away, but he canât seem to move his limbs properly due to the remaining effect of the faint.
âWhy do I have to wait?â
âI⊠as an inspector, I worked hard for more than twenty years..!â the man says, his throat writhing as if he canât breathe properly. âBut the wage I earned in those twenty years is less than what I can earn now in half a year doing this criminal business. Why does such a thing happen? Why is justice not rewarded? It is true that Iâm a criminal. But the real evils are those who created a system where justice is practiced, but not rewarded. The politicians of this country!â
There is a confined sadness of someone who really believes in what is said in those words. Out of all the voices that a human being can produce, that must be the most convincing of all.
However, there are also people who feel neither the poignancy nor the slightest itch in it.
âAhahahah!!â A dry and flat laugh. It is Dazai. âYou are really so predictable it surprises me. Even your final speech is exactly as expected.â
Dazai looks down at the opponent. Even people who look at the pebbles on the riverbank would show more interest than that.
âI get mad when people canât exceed my expectation. Just go ahead and shoot this guy already. You⊠by the way, how should I call you?â
Dazai looks at me and asks. Now that I think about it, Dazai has never called me by my name.
âCall me whatever you want.â I say and pull the trigger as a matter of course.
The submachine gun spats out bullets, making a sound like a crusher crushing a rock. The 9mm reapers that can easily turn a human body into minced meat rush towards the guy in a swarm. The floor where they land explodes. Debris scatter everywhere. The guy let out a soundless scream. He cramps a couple of times before passing out.
âWow. You really donât kill him.â Dazai says in a light voice, looking down at the guy who just fainted without a single scratch. âCompared to this guy, you are much more interesting. As long as he is alive, he will keep coming after you. Donât you have to kill him?â

It sucks but at this point Simon has nothing going on for him, but Ice King has fans and was ignorantly happy, and he fit in with the crazy world of ooo.

I translated the first few pages of the new Dazai novel, which was given out as free bonus for those who come to the cinema to watch the BEAST live action movie in Japan.

A bloody corpse of a young man is lying on my front porch.
I look down at the corpse, then at the front of the house. It is a quiet morning. The apartment across the street is casting a long black shadow on the pavement in front of me. The trumpet vines planted in the hedge are rustling in the breeze, and whispering to each other in a way that human cannot decipher. Somewhere in the distance, I can hear the sound of the long-distance trucks scraping against the road surface. And there is a corpse in the middle of the stairs in front of me.
In any case, to our eyes, a corpse is always a strangely exaggerated presence. But this time it is different. This corpse blends in with the landscape, becoming one with the everyday peaceful morning scenery. After a while, I realize the reason. The corpseâs chest is moving up and down faintly. It is not a corpse, it is alive.
I look at the young man. He is all black. A high-collar black cloak, a three-piece suit, a black tie. The things that are not black are his button-down shirt, and the bandages around his head. This one is a mottled color of white and red. This color pattern reminds me of some ominous Chinese prophetic characters. The place he is lying, is the middle of the stairs that leads to the front porch. The blood stains continuing down the cracked concrete stairs looks like he has been crawling.
Question. What should I do with this nearly-corpse in front of my eyes?
The answer is simple. If I touch him with the tip of my toes and put some weight on him, he will just roll down to the ground below. If I do so, then he will not be on my premise anymore. He will be on a public road. The countryâs territory. All those who are in trouble within the territory of the country should be saved by the mercy of the country. An ordinary postman like me should go home and have breakfast.
I am not doing that because I am a cold and heartless person. I am doing that because it is a survival necessity. The young manâs wounds are clearly from gunshots. He has been shot multiple times. There are probably more holes in his body than I can see from here. And to top it all off, he is holding a bunch of new notes in his left hand.
What can this mean? Nothing. It means nothing, except that his existence is a huge trouble, and that nothing good will come out of getting involved with him. In other words, he is clearly not someone that an average citizen should get involved with. A normal person in his right mind should have fled to the next city at the sight of him. Just like Jonah in the Bible would do the second time he runs into a giant fish in a stormy sea.
I look at the young man, at the road, and the sky, and at him again.
And then I start to act. First, I approach the guy and lift him up by his sides. Then I drag him by his heels into the house and lay him down on the wall-mounted bed. He is much lighter than he looks. Carrying him alone is not that much of a trouble. I check his wounds. There are many deep wounds, and the bleeding is not usual, but if he receives immediate proper treatment, it is not like he will die.
I take out my medical kit box from the back of the closet, and give him some simple first aid treatments. I put a towel under his upper body, cut his clothes with a pair of scissors to expose the wounds, and check if there is any bullet left inside. In order to stop the blood flow, I apply pressure on the pressure points: below the armpits, inner elbows, ankles, backs of knees, and tie them tightly with a clean cloth. Then I put disinfected tourniquets to the wounds to stop the bleeding. Fortunately for him, I can do this kind of first aid even with my eyes closed.
After I am done with the treatments, I look down at the young man and cross my arms. His breathing has stabilized. His respiratory system and bones seem to be intact. But he does not seem to be waking up. âItâs fine already, just kick him out.â I can hear the voice in my head. There is nothing more stupid than treating a suspicious guy like this. I guess I should listen to that voice. That is what a wise man would do.
Before following the angelâs advice, I take another look at the young man. I donât recognize his face. Probably not someone I know. I say probably, because the bandages covering half of his face makes it almost impossible to make out his features. But he is much younger than what I first thought. He is probably young enough to pass as a âboyâ.
Then I remember the wad of cash he was holding. He is still holding them. If it is actually as much as it looks, it must be a fortune for someone with a miserably cheap wage like me. In this situation, it should be okay to have some of them gently transferred to my pocket as a thank for saving his life, right? Thinking so, I pick up the wad of notes. And now I finally realize that I am the biggest idiot in this town.
I feel a bitter taste spreading inside my mouth.
That is an unused bundle of notes. There is some blood on them, but the paper strap, the proof that they are new, is there. There is no bankâs name printed on the strap. There is no printing of any kind. And the notes are neatly lined up by serial numbers in ascending order.
I feel like someone just punched me in the stomach.
There are two possibilities that I can think of. First, this bundle of notes has been taken out of the Reserve Bank of Japan Mint, before it hits the market. That would mean this man is a plague. There is no chance that an ordinary person could get his hands on such a thing. The notes printed at Japan Mint are first sent to the Ministry of Finance, where their serial numbers are scanned to become usable notes. Then they will be sent in cash transport vehicles to branches of the Reserve Bank. From there, they continue to be subdivided and distributed to city banks. At that point, the straps will be switched with those of the city banks.
However, there is no printing on his trap at all. The only way to be able to carry out a wad of notes in that state is to steal it from the Reserve Bank. The most likely way is to attack a cash transport car. Could it be that he just returned from a raid like that?
But if so, I will just stroke my chest in relief, and go back to making coffee in my kitchen. The cash car robbers are violent guys, but only violent. Violence alone cannot make a storm.
There is another possibility.

If that is the case, the thing in my hand right now has become as dangerous as a small nuclear warhead. Counterfeit currency is a tool of warfare that has been used way before bows and arrows. If one can bring an amount of well-made false currency into an enemy country, the value of that currency will drop due to the increase amount of money in circulation, leading to inflation. A country is, in a sense, its own currency. By skillfully fueling distrust in a countryâs currency, it is possible to destroy the economy and bring down a whole nation. For that reason, the National Security Agency is always on the lookout for counterfeit notes. If this level of a note is to be brought into the market, it would not be the city policeâs business. It is much higher. The National Security Agency, or the Military.
I put the wad of notes on my desk as if I am throwing them away. I donât want to leave my fingerprints on them anymore. I head to the phone. If I report the incident right away, I might be able to argue for some extenuating circumstances with the authorities. There is no time to waste.
When I pick up the receiver, I hear a faint voice. It isnât coming from the phone.
âPut the phone down.â
I turn to the direction where the voice came from. Before I knew it, the young man has opened his eyes and is looking at me with those eyes. I look at the receiver and the youth in turn. Then I say, âWhat if I donât?â
âI kill you.â
Those words are as mediocre as the unsold leftover packs lining up in a deli, at least to this young man. I can tell from looking at his eyes. When he utters the word âkillâ, it is nothing more than an ordinary, everyday word for him. Just like cutting your nails, or going out to buy more cigarettes, those kinds of words.
âHow?â I put down the receiver, but I have not returned it to the base station. Then I say, âYouâve got holes all over your body. You canât move anything. Youâre dying everywhere. You donât even have a gun. To kill me in that condition, it would take two hundred of you.â
âI donât need that much.â He says with a chilled voice. âIâm Port Mafia.â
Those words only are enough.
âPort Mafiaâ, I carefully choose my words before saying âThen I have no choice but to obey.â Then I take my time and quietly put the receiver down.
âThatâs good,â he chuckles.
If he really is from Port Mafia, I would have to be careful even about lifting or lowering a spoon in front of him. When the opponent is the Port Mafia, the synonym of darkness and violence, even if I report this and manage to escape today, there is no telling what will come later. A human being has a total of about two hundred bones. But it would not be strange if I will be shredded into just as many pieces of flesh.
I stare at him for about three seconds. Then I go to the kitchen. I keep the door open so that I can watch him from there. I start making coffee in the kitchen. I put the kettle on the fire and wet the rod with some water. I add the coffee powder, and pour boiling water in.
âIf Iâm not allowed to call the police, what about the doctors?â I say, keeping my eyes on the water.
âWhat Iâve done is just emergency first aids at best. If you donât get checked by a proper doctor, you will die soon.â
âNo need to worry.â The young man speaks with a slightly stretched out voice. âThis much is no big deal. Iâm used to injuries.â
âIs that so? Then I will obey.â I stir the coffee and set a timer. âIn any case, there is no way a normal postman like me can go against the Port Mafia demons.â
âBeing obedient is good. So nextâŠâ
Suddenly, the young man starts coughing and vomiting blood. I quickly run up to him and turn his head to the side so that he will not choke on his own blood. I check inside his mouth. I canât tell where the bleeding is from in this situation. It could be just a cut inside his mouth, or it could be an internal injury. I donât know.
âGo to the hospital. Get treatments. You are really going to die.â I state.
âItâs perfect then.â he speaks like whispering. âJust let me die like this.â
I feel a chilled wind passing through me.
I look at the young man. He is just staring at the ceiling. No emotions, no intents. Just a flat expression, like one who is just telling his age. I cannot believe my own eyes. I donât even feel like there is a human there. If it was late night instead of a refreshing early morning, I would think that he was a ghost or a hallucination.
Crazy things keep happening today. My life is about to get screwed up it seems.
âFine then.â I say. âIf you want to die, just die. Itâs your own life. I wonât stop you. But I will be in trouble if you die here. If you die here, no one will be able to testify that I am not the one who caused your injuries. I might be arrested.â
âTo be arrested, or to be killed by Port Mafia later, which one is better?â
I stare at him while saying, âThatâs a hard question.â
I go back to the kitchen, wait for the timer and turn off the fire. I then take out the cream can and ask, âYou want some coffee?â
No answer.
âHow did you collapse in front of my house?â
Still no answer.
âWhat the heck are those notes in your hand?â
No answer for this one of course.
I feel as if Iâm talking to a wind fairy. A character from a picture book who suddenly came to my house on a peaceful morning. Just that he is covered in blood, and he wants to die.
I pour coffee into two cups and add in the cream. I watch the steam, wait for some time and start stirring. Then I notice that I canât feel the sign of anyone in the next room anymore. I canât even hear him breathing. No hint of death drifting either.
I poke my head out of the door, the cups still in my hand. The young man is crawling towards the front door. If he could move his legs, he would just walk out. But it looks like he hasnât got that much strength back, so he just has his arms hooked on the floor and slowly creeping forward. Just like a prisoner escaping from cell in those old war movies.
He notices my gaze, and then as if he has given up, a mocking smile appears on his face.
âYou donât want me to die in this house, do you? Then if I leave, youâll have nothing to do with it. No need to help me. No need to ponder anything. Just stay there and watch.â
I ask him, still holding the coffee, âDo you want to die that much?â
âOf course I do. I joined the Port Mafia, but there was still nothing.â replies the young man in a voice that sounds like a soul-deprived gasp. âThe only thing I want now, is death.â
Then he starts crawling again.
I take a sip of my coffee while watching that. His progress is pathetically slow. I take another sip. He keeps moving without a rest. He has no intent to look back at me anymore.
There is only one thing to do.
âItâs no use to stop me.â The young man seems to notice my movement. He says with his eyes looking forward, âNo one can go against the Port Mafia. And no one in the Port Mafia can go against me. In other words, no one can whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!??â
He is pulled backward.
I wrap him with a bed sheet and lift him up. I then twist the two ends to close it. Like a candy wrapping paper. Then I turn him upside down and carry him back.
âIt hurts it hurts it hurts! My wounds are opening! What the hell are you doing, you blockhead. You want to be killed?â
âI donât want to be killed. But I donât want to let you die either. If you go out in this state, you will definitely die. Just make up a death story without me in it when you get better.â
As it looks like he is going to let out more complaint, I shake the lump of cloth.
âOuch ouch! Stop it! I hate pains!!â
âThen will you give up?â
âNo!â
I try to come up with a way to deal with it and I get one. Letâs tie him to the bed.
I put him down on the bed and open the pack. I bring in a big towel and wrap it around his arms, which are crossed in front of his chest, altogether with his torso. I take the decorative cord from the door way to bind his legs together and tie the ends to the metal fittings of the bed. I raise the pillows, change the blanket into a new one, and open the window to let the fresh air in.
âFor the time being, until your wounds have healed, I will have you stay like that.â I look down to the young man and say âIs there anything you want?â
âMy nose is itching.â He looks at me resentfully while wriggling his two arms that are no longer free.
âPoor you.â I go back to the coffee in the kitchen.
The young manâs insults are echoing behind my back. But this neighborhood is sparsely populated, so there is no need to worry about disturbing the neighbors. I enjoy my morning coffee.
And so begins the strange and short communal life of me and Dazai together.

- Where do you find your raws? I donât âfindâ them. I buy them through sites like bookwalker or animatebookstore, sometimes Amazon or just any website that provide digital books.
- Why do you always get the raws earlier? I donât. I am the type who canât wait so I always buy the new chapter the very moment it is released, which might make you think I somehow get the chapters before everyone. Japan has a âflash getâ system where the physical stores might have things on the shelf a few days before the actual release date and I sometimes got my hands on my copy early that way but I try my best not to spoil things before the official date. (I still do sometimes when I am too excited though...)
- Will you post the raws? I donât post raws in most of the cases. There are other people doing it already and since I am living Japan, I do want to minimize the risk of getting charged for sharing copyrights content. (Again, I still do that sometimes if I feel the need to, but most of the time, no)
- Is it okay to use your contents for this and that? It depends on the content so I always put a note at the end of the post if I donât want it to be reposted. Honestly, I generally donât mind sharing at all but I do want to encourage people to actually buy the stuff and support the authors. Also, sometimes I want the contents (mostly scans and videos) to stay in my Tumblr because I donât want the authors or the Japanese fans to accidentally see it on Twitter or other more popular social platforms. If you donât see any warnings, that means it is okay to use.
- Do you take translation requests? Normally I donât because my time is limited (not to mention I still have lots to learn about my Japanese). Sometimes if I receive a request and Iâm interested in it too, then I will find time to work on it but it might take months because I prefer to do things my pace. Same with scan requests. If it is a card I can easily scan it but I wonât go so far to bend and damage my books to scan an image.
- Do you need credits? I am happy enough at the fact that there are people checking out my blog so credits are not mandatory but are really appreciated. Unless you decide to ignore my instructions and reupload my contents without my permission, then Iâd prefer you to NOT credit me please.
