Last Word on Stop Animation

I have handed up my work for the stop animation, onto Josh's usb. Job done! And not a bad job at that. I dont often say that about things that I have personally done, but this is a good outcome. Sarah has a very creative side to her, she made a lovely model made from polimer clay. My set was a leap of faith, but as soon as we looked through the lens of the camera it looked so good!

It was a good experience, working with a model and camera, figuring out the lighting and fitting the storyline and number of shots together. We didnt get to do the story we had planned, but the story we ended up with was probably better.

It has been good looking at other stop animations, with new eyes, being able to figure out how some of them have been done. I now look at TV ads and computer ads differently! It is amazing how many places you can find versions of stop animation or media that uses a similar idea.

I am finding this in all of my subjects, I am beginning to see the world with different eyes. It is thrilling to wonder where these new experiences will take me next!

A brief synopsis of Digital Media Project 2:

Stop Animation Story Telling

Sarah, Jasmine and Phil

Our plan for filming is to use camera stills of a model made from clay to tell a story about chewing gum. We aim to take around 500 photos to give us a fairly smooth film, rather than a jerky finish.

The model will be made with wire arms and neck so that he can be animated and the set will have features such as a “working” letter box so we can see letters being posted. The set will be made of cardboard and acrylic paint.

The story is to begin with DB having a cup of tea, to introduce the character. He recieves mail and opens a letter to find a piece of chewing gum inside. He tries the gum but doesnt like it. He throws the gum away but it misses the bin and splats, growing bigger and bigger and eventually covering DB. DB struggles to unstick himself, gives up, cries, and his tears melt away the gum. Now the room is back to normal.

We hope to take all the photos on the same day so that we don’t need to worry about lighting changes and setting things up exactly the same twice. We have allowed 2 days for filming as we don’t know how long the process will take. Hopefully we will only use 1 day.

We have divided tasks between us so that each person can concentrate on the agreed item. The story has been agreed and so we can work at home until the shooting.

We will be using Adobe Premiere Pro to make the film.

This is a great link for all those clay animiations. It is a how to page, but it is very fun. There are all kinds of models, human to monster, but all are very clever. Definately worth a look, and broadens the horizons for model making in stop animation.

Although the content of this animation is a little bit confusing, it is an example of using the title and credits in the adobe and the interesting ways you can use them. In this case they are zooming in for each line.

What we learnt! Most important of all is to make sure the objects are accessible from a comfortable position for prolonged periods of time. Continued stretching and reaching awkward angles quickly starts to hurt. Always use a camera tripod. We made do with a camera stuck with blue tack to an upside down pot on a book. It was fine for the camera, but after 500 photos my hands were sore from holding the whole thing steady. Experiment with lighting before you begin, testing the model in different places. Glad we did that. You can see what shadows you will get where. We liked them, but if you don’t want them its best to know before you begin. Take a few shots and flick through them with slideshow to check the movements are what you intend, ie not too jerky or too subtle. Always have back up batteries! It’s a lot quicker than running out to the shop, then thinking “we deserve some pastries too”, then having a break to eat the pastries you didn’t need to buy, lol! When using a model, like our figure, work out how to make it stand steady and how to manoeuvre it before you start. We broke ours by pushing down too hard on a weak area, then had to repair and wait for glue to set. We used a lot of blue tack to hold things where we wanted them. It’s best to check how well it sticks to all the surfaces, because some won’t let it stick, others will. You can use the camera angle to hide a multitude of sins, like a hand holding something that won’t stay, wire supports, the useful blue tack and probably loads of other issues. A very steep learning curve, but also fascinating as you get insight into how the big films like Wallace and Grommet are made, and how labourious they must be!

Here are some images of the making of our short stop animation. It looked so different through the lense of a camera compared to viewing it with the naked eye.

It took all night, but we got enough photos to make our own stop animation! I am so pleased we kept going till it was finished. We put the photos on slide show and manually flicked through as quickly as possible to get an idea of how it will look. I think it will look really good. I think we were both quite surprised at how good it looked, and maybe a little bit proud too! It took a lot of patience, especially sarah who was doing the movement. We did shorten the script a lot because there were so many shots needed for any one action. The best part was experimenting with the lighting, I think we produced a wonderful effect at the end. It is a massive relief to know we have all the material we need now. We just need to edit and create some sounds. Well done sarah, never would have got this far on my own!

This is my final gif that i made on photoshop.

The self-portrait idea came about from the frustration I experienced using photoshop. I decided to have a computer breakdown rather than a mental breakdown!

I used basic text boxes to start with to make the computer screen and then used the paint brush to gradually black out the screen. Then using another text I wrote my name across the screen. To make the effect of my name being written I gradually blacked it out backwards so that I could uncover a layer each time.

I found the programme very difficult to get my head around, but it has gradually managed to make sense. I think the main problem was being unable to use the same programme at home and after the lesson to solidify what was learnt in class.

In the end I had too many layers and frames for Tumblr. I am working on making it small enough to post without taking out too much content. I think that although the idea looks simple I possibly made it more complicated than it needed to be. I have learnt a lot, and have been able to use photoshop in another subject. So it has given a tool I can use again.

It has taken a lot of frustration to get this done! Not being very computer literate has had its challenges, but here it is at last. My Memes and appropriation for digital fundementals.

The gif was taken from 2 works of art, the first is Hans Holbeins "The Ambassadors" 1533. His work illustrates the Ambassador of State and the Ambassador of the Roman Catholic church, who are represented by the items on the table between them. The 3D skull in the original painting is said to be a comment on how transient life is, and how close death is.

The diamond encrusted skull made by Damen Hurst, "For the Love of God" is also a comment on life using the "memento mori" often seen in renaissance art. It is said to represent how we dont like life being so fleeting and that we try to dress it up so that it is bearable.

I used the skull and the portrait on the website www.gifninja.com/animated-gifs/create and was very surprised at how easy and quick it was to put together. All I had to do was change the sizes of the skull so that they matched, and cut each out using the magnetic loop. Then the programme loaded each picture or frame saved as a gif and put them together.

It was much easier than I had anticipated, so there is a lesson to be learnt - DONT STRESS!!
