Avery came into the world by accident which would eventually become the story of her life. Being put into the foster system meant that she found family in the other children, creating a small but tight-knit group with a few other kids. While many of them hoped a family would come to their group home and pick them as their new child, Avery had never wanted to leave the place she called home. In fact, she saw her foster mother as a parent, the other kids as her siblings, and slowly watched them get adopted out. It wasn't until Avery got older that she started to realize there was something different about her, something that had always been there but she'd never noticed. Once she hit puberty all of the concern she'd ever had came flooding in and those around her were affected when she'd spiral. It was her foster mother who noticed the other children starting to cry or struggle to breathe when they were around Avery. The anxiety she felt was spreading to the people she cared about most.
After that, they started to keep to themselves. They didn't come out for game nights anymore or even bother trying when a couple would come to find a new family member. She'd decided after that the foster system was safer for her to live until they were old enough to live on their own. With the time Avery had to herself, she'd never wasted a moment, using it to perfect her art and start a graphic design side job. It was a way to prepare for their future while giving themselves something to do instead of rotting away in their room. By the time Avery turned 18, they had started to figure out how to control their anxiety. Therapy and medication had been the only way they found to keep themselves from tornadoing themselves into a hole. It's why she felt ready enough to move out on her own.
Avery created a life for herself. She worked from home and ran her own graphic design company. They had only met a few others like them in Echo but it was hard to keep track of anyone else who was different like them, only meeting up every once in awhile. That was until the borders closed and those who were different started to hide, including her. She'd wanted a place to feel free but now that people were being hunted all of the work she'd been doing wasn't helping. The spiral was starting. That's why when her lease let up and the borders opened she decided it was the perfect opportunity to get back on her feet. What could go wrong? Now they are excited to meet new people, have new adventures, and hopefully not get killed by any hunters.
One of the ways Avery manages their anxiety is by smoking weed. Before that, they'd had a problem with cigarettes and were happy to kick that bad habit.
They are a bit of a know-it-all, and though they mean well their worrying can get ahead of them. Avery doesn't want to watch anyone else in her life hurt.
She still keeps in contact with her foster mom though its become less and less over the years.
They are constantly wearing headphones and listening to music, it's another way that they manage their anxiety by tuning out the world around them.
They overthink quite literally everything. If it isn't direct it will go through an entire process of what all they could mean before coming to a skewed conclusion.
Avery thinks of her abilities as a curse, always trying to drown out their own thoughts so she doesn't affect those around her. Once she was sitting next to a woman and child on the bus when the infant broke and started to cry so hard it struggled to breathe due to Avery worrying about if her anxiety was giving anyone else anxiety. The child found peace when she got off the bus at the next stop and walked the rest of the way.
She has a therapy rabbit named Melman who she considers a son.
Tea is one of her necessities. They’re a bit of a fiend and a collector. Whether it’s iced or hot, they’re probably drinking it or about to. It’s one of the things that help soothe her.
