baby, it’s cold outside;

He’d had every intention of striding right inside and waiting for her at baggage claim with a cute little sign he’d made. ‘Peggy Schuyler’ it read, a cheeky but loving tribute to the character she’d originated on broadway’s Hamilton. He’d been so excited that he’d stayed up an extra hour carefully piecing the sign together by hand with craft supplies he’d picked up after work yesterday. Normally, Pedro was driven around by a man hired from the studio when he was on location for a job. But he’d rented a car for the week so he could show Jasmine around without any distractions and figured he’d pick her up himself. 

Hyped up on adrenaline and two cups of coffee, it’s not until he’s sped down the highway to the airport and parked in it’s garage that he remembers. He can’t just waltz into an airport and stand in a crowd. They’d never make it out of there. And poor Jasmine would probably end up a twitter hashtag by tomorrow morning.

Dragging in a breath, he lets it out sharply, annoyed with himself for not planning this out beyond his own excitement. Sitting in the front seat of the rented SUV, Pedro picked up his phone and ignored the 246 notifications on his SMS app. Instead, he clicked open the picture pinned at the top of his messages that featured Smashley Rose herself. 

[TEXT] : ¡bienvenidas bonita! can you meet me in the parking garage? level 4. I’ll come over to the elevators. sorry :( just don’t want you to get stuck watching me take selfies for an hour or three

this is the craziest thing she’s ever done. or . . . at the very least, it’s within her top three. flying from new york to california only to completely abandon the place within a few days. for canada in the middle of winter. maybe she was a little crazy right now. maybe things had messed with her head a little more than she’d ever realized. maybe escaping america altogether for a solid few days was the real healing she needed. 

or maybe she was just crazy. 

which was entirely possible and entirely okay. things had changed so drastically as of late and she couldn’t bring herself to care about anything beyond her own needs. and her needs had pointed her to canada and pedro before she could even think it through entirely. the plane ticket had been purchased within seconds of his invitation and god, she was putting so much into this but he had been the only source of light as of late. she selfishly wanted every ounce of that light in every aspect of her every day life. 

as she waited for her one bag, jasmine switched her phone from airplane mode back to normal; waiting a solid minute or so for things to kick back in. a few instagram notifications, twitter, this and that, and pedrito. thank god she had already cleared customs and this anxious waiting period wouldn’t last much longer.

I really don’t even have words. thank you for being so generous with your time 

jazz: i’m excited to see you. 

jazz: it feels incredibly far away but it was literally the first flight i could get. trust me, i was digging through everything. if you can’t make it, that’s okay! i don’t expect you to drop everything just to come save me from the airport ;) thank you for inviting me. i’ve been wanting to hop over there but i didn’t want to intrude.

ohhh man, real life spiderman over here looking after new york for me. that is extremely kind of you. i owe you big time when i’m back home ! i’m starting on the second season of my show blindspotting soon. very excited to get back into it.

new york is superior to los angeles… not enough hype in the world to change that, bonita. my only advice? don’t run away from missing anything. lean into it. aching for another place or time is some of the deepest emotional energy you can tap into. harness that power and use it in your work

has anyone ever told you that you’re a poet ? i feel completely rejuvenated from your words alone. you’re completely right. this ache in the pit of my stomach is going to help so much. got any other incredible advice up there, pedrito ?

god, you’re so right. it is nice and warm here and my hands haven’t touched a shovel in days. it’s an odd feeling but . . . you know. although i think i’m gonna disappear to canada for a few days.
