Do you happen to know anything about cleaning/semi-restoring old quilts? My great-grandmother passed away last year, and among the stuff my mom and I got are a pair of quilts. (One of which I think she made, and one I think was gifted from another relative?) They're each 30+ years old, and they've been in a box for the past decade so they're dirty and kind of musty.
If in good condition, machine wash warm without bleach and tumble dry warm. Heat kills dust mites and other icky things. But it shouldn't be washed in warm or hot water more often than absolutely necessary because the heat damages the fabric. If in questionable condition. Machine wash cold, tumble dry low, use gentle cycle if you can. A front-loader will be best because the agitator in the center of the older models can damage fabric over time. Plus, front loaders tend to so a more thorough job of cleaning large things like quilts and sheets. Use a sensitive skin detergent, they're gentler on clothes. It shouldn't take more than 2 wash and dry cycles to get the stink out.
When storing them, fold once the long way (like a hot dog), then fold again the short way but bring one end to the other about 12 inches shy of the end. At the folded end, roll it tight but gentle. By the time you get to the end, the short length will be about even with the other. It's kinda how towels are folded and stored in hotels and gyms. Fewer folds is preferable, and rolling is gentler on the fabric. After it's rolled, try fitting it in a pillowcase. Store quilts in plastic or metal containers, but if wood is the only option. Keep the quilt separate from the wood. Cedar is traditionally used for storing quilts (repels bugs), but the acid in wood gradually bleaches and weakens the fabric. A pillowcase will keep it rolled and serve as the layer between wood and quilt.
I may need to put a quick tutorial together for how I fold quilts. My personal quilts are in a vacuum-sealed bag (Space Saver) to protect it from mold, bugs, and wildfire smoke.
Finished the quilt top for my sister’s quilt! I haven’t ironed it, squared it off, or put the quilt together (the backing will be a white on white geometric fabric) but I’ll do that tomorrow. It’s a star block with white on white stars surrounded by gem tone fabrics in flower, bird, and metallic patterns. I haven’t decided yet if I will do straight line quilting or free motion.
Milan Exhibiton opening 17th September (tomorrow) at the @canepaneri Gallery! Very excited and proud to be exhibiting my stitches in Italy! I created a body of artwork for the show at the end of last year, the work has been in Italy since February, so it’s nice to be reunited with the collection! The pieces all follow a loose theme of ‘textiles’. I have various works from spinners and weavers, launderettes, old Mills from Yorkshire, tailors in London, knitters in the library…. The work will be up for one month. ❤️
The lovely folk from the gallery have put me up in Genova for the last week. It’s been a great experience to learn about collectors, art fairs and auctioneers. A little insight into the art world.
If your in Milano, come visit us tomorrow for the opening 😊
