Why It Matters

Jonathan Crane’s Cane’s appearance matters.

In many of the backstories, he was bullied for his appearance. In Masters of Fear, he was drawn very lanky and awkward–and thus nicked Ichabod Crane. He’s always been different than the other kids. Big nose, receding hairline, long limbs….

Even when he’s drawn traditionally handsome, he should be bullied for it. That’s the cornerstone of his backstory and what drives him to love himself despite other’s cruel words.

His fellow professors mock him for wearing shabby clothes, called him an odd fellow, and generally looked down upon him. He earned the same salary but because he sent it all on books, he inadvertently looked poor.

Him not only being poor, but looking poor matters.

He is a symbol of poverty (and fear)

Not many villains use this angle, and one might be saying that this demonizes the poor, but I think that misses the point. His bullies would mock him, but guess what? Crane accepts these flaws. In fact, he wouldn’t even CALL them flaws! They’re….strengths!

He’s happy being a symbol of poverty. He’s in his element.

Do you think "Riddle me this, Batman?" has become a common lexicon among Gothamnites for when they don't understand something?

I like to think it has. I like to think they've heard The Riddler say it one too many times, and now it's just ingrained into their collective psyches in much the same way as "No shit, Sherlock" is.

I also like to imagine Bruce Wayne making a rare appearance at a corporate meeting, and the latest Gen Z hire, a generation that infamously doesn't fuck with formal office corporate speak, just leans over the table and says, "Okay, I hear what you're saying, but riddle me this, Batman," and Bruce tries not to choke on his coffee.

Jonathan crane gardening headcanon

I feel like Jonathan harbors a secret passion for gardening. Despite his dark persona and obsession with fear, he finds solace in tending to his garden. Initially, he acquired a variety of plants for a new version of his fear toxin, but over time, he grew attached to them and now keeps them for his own enjoyment. His favorites are the ones with the most unusual and intimidating appearances, like Venus flytraps and pitcher plants. He even names them after his favorite phobias, like “Arachnophobia” for his spider plant and “Nyctophobia” for his nightshade.

In his downtime, he can be found in his greenhouse, wearing a straw hat and overalls, humming to his plants. He believes that talking to them helps them grow stronger, and he often shares his latest fear toxin formulas with them, as if they could understand his genius. His garden is his sanctuary, a place where he can escape from the chaos of Gotham and find a bit of peace. He even sought advice from Poison Ivy on how to keep his plants healthy.
