Lenses
18mm
The smallest of all the wide angle lenses, commonly produce
rectangular images but some degree of barrel distortion is not
uncommon.
55mm
One of the most common with consumer cameras and provides
the clearest of images for consumer prices.
100mm
Has sharp image quality used mainly by intermediate photographers
If that are willing to pay the money.
300mm
Used by intermediate photographers because of the high image
Quality but professionals also use them to get large image quality
In the 300mm range.
500mm
These cameras are huge and heavy so its uses are very specialised
But most commonly used by wild life photographers to get high
Quality zoomed images without being too close to the target.
Wide angle lens
A wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is
smaller than the focal length of a normal lens for a given film
plane, most common lens due to them being small and
able to take high quality images at a decent range
Fisheye lens
Instead of having a smaller normal lens a fish eye lens has
a wide lens to give a almost 180 degree field of view
this lens is most commonly used for getting a image of a
landscape and confine it to a smaller image without degrading how much the image is showing.
Pancake lens
Flat lenses much smaller than the other lenses by equivalent,
The lens is most commonly used for situations where having a
Large high resolution SLR lens would be too much to carry or
The camera needs to be light and mobile
Macro lens
These lenses have a small view distance but can take extremely
High quality images at close range so the main use has been
Small animals like bugs with pictures taken to high quality of
Something the size of a nail head
Photography jobs
Jobs that include using these specialised lenses there are many examples of jobs that need these lenses. Like wild life photographers need to use the bigger of the lenses, to be able to get high quality images while still being far away to not be in danger, when taking pictures of lions and other wild animals. Another example where the higher quality of lens is needed is in sport journalism like in tennis and football, these high quality images need to be taken to such high quality so the images can be blown up without much quality being lost, and also if the images are used on a computer or on the TV the image will always look to a high quality.
Jobs that may require a smaller lens but still to a high quality like the 18mm SLR can take high quality images at a decent range and the camera is still mobile and easy to use. These jobs include wedding photographers needing high quality images so the image may be printed to a large canvas if the client wants a wall decoration from a picture, also a wedding Is a big part of peoples life’s so the client would want for all the pictures to look nice and have a lot of them taken, this is another reason why a wide angle lens is good to be used because of all the photos that need to be taken the photographer can take hundreds throughout the day and then decide on which photos to use, and with the camera being light it makes it easy to use.
What did you do?
For the assignment we where given the task of making a short stop motion animation, for this we where given a camera
What did you learn?
How can you improve it?
the animation we are making is going to be tom running through walls and appearing on the other side, then tom will morph into a bottle.
for the animation we will need tom a wall and a bottle.
some of the problems we may face are getting the animation to look smooth at a low frame rate and not have the images too different.
How was it done?
This animation use a lot of string for the bulk of the animation getting a organic, creepy look these effect would take a lot of time to look right, later in the animation the bike is animated to move on its own. The part of the animation with the spider I believe was shot in front of a green screen in order to get the depth of feel in the image.
How the camera changes?
In the animation the camera does not follow a set path but instead opts for a panning shot with rotation on the camera this would be a difficult process to do because of the time it would take and the amount of tweaking the get the final video to look smooth.
How can I use these techniques?
I could use some of the techniques in my animation like the rope; I would like to try something and try to make It to that quality. I could also use the green screen process to get an interesting affect.
How was it done?
in the animation at the start they use a child as part of the stop motion, after there is a lot of stuff done in after effects or another digital animation tool then there is a shot of a rolling cylinder going through a corridor while balls and cones are coming out the floor, this part I was thinking was made backwards by moving the camera backwards and cutting the cones and balls down in size.
How the camera changes?
In the animation the camera opts for a slow moving pan forward or back, and a more traditional still camera, to do this the animators must have moved the camera closer to the scene with every picture.
How can I use these techniques?
In the animation I believe the shot with the cones coming from the floor was done backwards and by cutting the bottom of the cone off and placing in in the same place and moving the camera away this would be easier to animate and would save materials.
this picture
this photo was taken outside the church in nottingham
This photo was taken in Nottingham and in the image you can see are gravestones lined up on the wall some date back to the 1830's. I have many other versions of this picture where things like a bench bellow and a large tree on the right.
this image has taught me to not be happy with the first shot you take and that you should try to get the best shot no matter how many pictures you take.
Photography Lesson 2
What did we do?
in this lesson we focused on types of lenses that can be fit to a camera and their uses, and also looked into where photography can be used in modern day like journalism and sports photographers and which types of camera they would use and why.
What did you learn?
this lesson i learned the different types of lens and the measurements of a lens and how it effects image quality and the overall look of the image like with a wide angle lens images being completely different to an image taken with a zoom camera or a wide angle one.
How is this useful?
this is useful to me because with the knowledge of camera lenses i will know what type of lens i would need to use for a specific lens. like id i need to take a extreme close up shot i would use a macro lens
Photography Lesson 1
What did we do?
in the first lesson we had a brief history of photography to write on tumblr, then we had some example cameras come round the class to show the history of photography.
What did you learn?
we learnt the origins of photography how people used to use things to take photographs like projecting the countryside into a room and tracing the image for painting later. Also in lesson we learnt about the implications of photography on the media like in Vietnam and the american civil war, which through the media had gotten a bad reputation from the images and news coming from the front line.
How is this useful?
With a better understanding of photography's origins and uses i have a better understanding of where photography is useful and needed.
Photography
What is photography? photography originated from the Greek word “phos” which means light and “graphe” meaning drawing. Modern photography has become more digital and is used in many different ways.
What is the benefits of digital cameras?
The benefits of using digital cameras over conventional cameras is that with digital cameras you can preview the image as soon as the image is taken. another benefit is that to get higher quality images digitally is the only way to get an image that can be shown on a big scale without compromising quality
How has photography changed the world?
because of technological advances in photography it has made photography readily available to everyone such as ID cards, having your picture taken easy without much effort. Also in modern war photography has been used to show the public the effects of war and famine such as the war in Vietnam was the first war to have the media play a major part in the war effort, due to Americas outlook on the war from the mass images and videos coming from Vietnam it showed modern america its first look into war and this sprouted mass protest against the war effort.
