DSA Presentation

I wrote about Immunizations and the controversy currently surrounding them. My main purpose was to properly educate parents on immunizations. To help them make an educated decision toward them, and avoid hearsay. I chose a YouTube movie for this assignment which uses pathos. The following YouTube video link, takes you to a movie called the Greater Good. This movie manipulates the emotions of the viewers, and entices fear. It narrates the stories of children that had immunization injuries, and how they have to cope with them everyday.

It seems that Vaccinating is very important and most if not all people should be vaccinated although there is potential of risk with some people. What steps do you think should be taken to prevent the side affects of immunization. Do you believe everyone should be vaccinated? Should a law be placed forcing everyone to have proper vaccinations?

One of the rhetorical choices that was used in my DSA, was the use of video images and pictures to portray immigration. The use of logos was established through the usage of several charts showing the rate of immigrants and their origin that are currently or have been a part of the United States. The video explains the causes of immigration and the actions that are taken in order to minimize the number of immigrants that come into the United States.

In the end of your documentary you added that immigration will continue, do you have any solutions to this problem? Do you believe the US should grant immigrants citizenship? and if so do you think this will help the US or affect it?

DSA Presentation

My DSA was on Police brutality and its current situation in America. The rhetorical choices in the sources i chose used images and videos. One source in particular was a tumblr page, It contained pictures, videos, and information on police brutality cases. This source contained pathos due to the graphic images it showed of a victim of police brutality, the emotions you feel while seeing such disturbing content makes you realize there is an issue in today’s policing. My DSA was to inform the reader on the current issue with law enforcement in this country.

DSA Reflection

1. What was your process in selecting your sources?

My process in selecting sources was looking online for a non traditional source for my topic. Social media is a good example. I scanned through many potential options and chose the ones I felt made a good fit.

2. How do you understand the difference between traditional and non-traditional sources?

 In a traditional source it has to be a scholarly and reliable source from a well established author or site. The traditional source is more educational while you can find a non traditional in a more open site such as tumblr.

3. What did you enjoy/dislike about using non-traditional sources?

I enjoyed it cause it was a lot more simpler for me to find non traditional sources. I also found it more entertaining when looking/reading through potential sources.

While answering this question I thought back on what steps I took when I first decided how to find my source. It was quite simple since I used the Internet such as when I was researching non traditional sources.

Week 13

In my digital source analysis I found it quite easy to choose sources to write about. It was easy to find an unordinary sources that did not have to be from a database, this gave way more options. In my digital source analysis I chose to get some perspective from the people that have or have seen abuse from police officers, since my previous papers were as neutral as can be. One source I used was from this website. It was a tumblr page dedicated to videos and posts about recent police brutality cases. I selected this source due to how active it was and thought it had a lot of examples and feedback that would be good for digital source analysis.

Week 7

Explain your process in searching through multiple platforms/database and in obtaining different types of sources and multiple perspectives for the Literature Review.

My process through searching a variety of different platforms and databases was quite time consuming and tedious. At first i was pretty confused on where to find reliable sources but thanks to help of some of my peers i discovered that UTEP and the library has a variety of useful tools to help me find just what i was looking for. Also as a back up I would occasionally search through google scholar which help as well.

Week 10: Lit Review Reflection

Lit Review Reflection

1. What patterns did you find in the development, or enhancement, of your research skills?

Patterns I developed while researching was rereading and making sure I am writing from a third party perspective, not being biased and leading towards one side.

 2.  Did your assessment/evaluation of the sources change? If so, how?

Yes, some of the sources id find seemed good at the moment but upon further exception I would realized that it probably wasn't a good source and then I would start searching for a more credible one.

 3. Do you think the methodology described in questions 1 and 2 work? Yes/No. Explain.

Yes I do believe the methods work, it helped me stay focused on my research. It kept me in check so I can write the best literature possible.

In question 2 I had to make choices based off what was the most educational decision. Choosing the best source was really a hard but very important decision.

Literature Review concerns:

One concern I have is finding good sources to use for the Literature Review.

Another concern would be not sounding biased when writing on the issue.

Week 5

1. What did you know about genres before this assignment and what impact do you think studying genres may have on your writing?

I honestly did not know much about genres before this assignment, this was all new to me. At first I was a little confused but then as i continued reading on the subject i understood it a lot more. I think learning about genres is really important and I will put this information to good use.

2. What are the complexities of using genres?

Genres for the most aren’t that complex when you get used to it. At first i feel like staying on the subject of that specific genre was a bit complicated for me, but i also believe it varies from person to person. 

3. What is the value of studying and/or writing about genres?

Genres are very valuable when writing an analysis, I will always use them from now on when writing a paper as such.

For question 1 I put a GIF of Kanye making a confused face cause that’s how I felt at first when learning how to right analysis and using genres but thankfully now I have a much better understanding.

Genre Analysis

Police brutality is my genre analysis. Its intended audience is basically everyone is the U.S. although i do recognize that this might be an out of country issues as well. The audience is trying to bring awareness by protest signs and even gestures as seen in the picture above that i am using as iconography. The image is conveying the issue of today’s police brutality cases in which sometimes the victim has their hands up and the police still shoot them. The emotions of the people in this photograph seem to have a blank expression which could actually say a lot, such as them being tired of the problems occurring with the law enforcement system, their faces can also be seen as serious cause this is a very serious topic. The shirts that are being worn contribute greatly to the message at hand, it is simple yet it stands out.

Intro

My name is Jesus Dominguez, I’m currently a Junior and my major is Criminal Justice. Hopefully once I graduate I can use this degree to get a career in either U.S. Customs or Homeland Security. An interest that I have is trucks, I really enjoy them, I find it fun just driving down a dirt road and blasting music and enjoying the weather. My goal for this class is to earn the credit I need, but also improve my writing skills and hopefully become more advanced on the subject.
