A/N: I decided to tie Kensi and Deeks’ anniversary in with the upcoming episode, particularly the picture where they’re laying down. As usual, it’s a little late and there’s a small amount of angst and a fair amount of cheesiness. Happy Densi Wedding Anniversary!
“I can’t believe we’ve been married for 3 years,” Deeks murmured, trailing his fingers through Kensi’s hair. They’d cleared everything out of the spare bedroom aside from a small dresser. Tomorrow they planned to pick up a bed and some other furniture, but for now it was pretty empty.
Instead of going to their own bedroom, they’d laid out a blanket and some pillows, deciding to camp out their for the time being. Maybe it was silly, but Deeks was reluctant to leave.
“Should have escaped when you had the chance,” Kensi teased, shifting her on their shared pillow. “Now you’re stuck with me forever.”
“And I wouldn’t have it any other way.”
“Really?” She sounded at least slightly surprised. “You wouldn’t change anything about the last three years?”
“Well, I might have things go a little easier for us,” Deeks admitted. “Maybe a few less injuries, but otherwise? No. I think we’re exactly where we’re supposed to be.”
“It does seem like things are finally coming together. The house is fixed up, we’re not in extreme debt, and,” she paused to inhale shallowly. “We’re finally getting a foster placement.”
“Yeah,” Deeks agreed, allowing a soft smile. “Do you think he’ll like it?” He lifted his hand briefly to gesture at the walls, which they’d repainted in a warm shade of blue. They’d also bought some galaxy themed decorations, but held off on applying them yet just in case.
“I think so.” She shrugged against his shoulder. “And we can change it if he doesn’t.” They were silent for a minute, Kensi’s breath soft in his ear. “It’s kind of crazy to think about after all this time. It almost feels like a fantasy sometimes. Like maybe we’ll wake up and realize it was just a dream.”
“I know what you mean. But this time it’s going to be different.”
“And if it’s not?” Kensi asked softly, doubt and refusal to hope in her voice. “There’s no guarantee with foster kids.”
“Hey, don’t think like that,” Deeks said gently. “We’re going to welcome Caleb into our home and yeah, at first it’s probably going to be weird and a little rough, but eventually, we’ll all adapt. We’ll be a family. In a few months he’ll be complaining that he hates peas and want to paint the walls black and join a hard metal band.”
Kensi snorted, successfully diverted from her woes.
“I think you might be confusing him with an angsty teenager, minus the peas part. That also was incredibly specific. Did you have another secret band you never told me about?” Kensi asked.
“Nope. But I did ask my mom if I could get an earring,” Deeks told Kensi, which made her gasp. She briefly pushed herself up enough for him to see her look of disbelief.
“You’re joking.” When Deeks shook his head, she laughed again. “Somehow I can’t picture you with an earring.”
“Ok, I was 13 and Ray convinced me that it would make us look cool to the girls we liked.”
Making a delighted sound now, Kensi lightly tapped his chest several times.
“Ok, I’m going to need pictures of this,” she decided. “ I can just see you now with a little gold hoop. Like a 70s version of a pirate.”
“Luckily for me, there is no photographic evidence of that particular poor life choice because I never got around to mine. Since our moms said no, we decided to pierce our ears ourselves,” Deeks explained.
“Again, completely spearheaded by Ray. He was acting all tough and told me to do his first. I got halfway through one ear, he saw blood, and passed out. Pretty sure that’s when my slight fear of needles kicked in.”
“Well, let’s hope that all of that is several years away for Caleb,” Kensi said, resting her hand on his chest.
“Oh god, we’ll never make it,” he groaned. He laid his fingers over Kensi’s, smiling as he stared up at the ceiling. “Am I crazy if I say I can’t wait?”
“No, I was thinking the same thing.”
Brushing her hair back with his free hand, he leaned forward and kissed her softly, shifting to cup the back of her head.
“I love you, Kensi,” he murmured. “Happy Anniversary.”
“And to a thousand more,” Kensi added, curling into his chest. “I love you so much. And I love our life together.”
