Look, buddy, pal, I’m not into online multiplayer whatever myself, but I can state with a fair degree of confidence that the fact that the opposing team just went in with a totally suboptimal composition and still kicked your ass does not, in fact, mean that the game in question is “pandering to casuals”.

It means the game is well-designed.

The performance gap between the best composition and the worst is supposed to be relatively narrow. This is an explicit design goal of virtually all multiplayer games, online or otherwise. The outcome being decided by team composition  before the match even begins is a failure state of game design.

This is not rocket science.

I mean, what are you even asking for? A game where you can reliably win by looking up the optimal composition and strategy in a guide and executing it by rote? For all that you’re always banging on about “skills”, it’s difficult to see what skill is in play in your ideal scenario. Skill at following instructions, maybe?

I'd like to capture the sort of night vale-ish "we live with incomprehensible horrors. this is fine" sort of atmosphere. Something that gives as much importance to sanity as to health, and maybe allows for other types of health bar type things? Non-permanent death. Support for faction/people relationships, ideally. Maybe with mechanical weight to knowing information or obsessions. I'm envisioning players investigating the same thing for different factions, with the option to switch allegiances.

(With respect to this post here, regarding tabletop RPG recommendations for doing Fallen London.)

Do you picture the players actually being in a conventional RPG “party”, or are you thinking of something more along the lines of the browser game, where each player pursues their investigation more or less independently, only occasionally intersecting with other players’ stories?

The latter is admittedly an unconventional setup for tabletop, but there are a few games that support it - for example, Avery Alder’s free RPG Perfect Unrevised. It’s a game about heroic criminals in a sort of surreal steampunk dystopia. The way it works is that each player has her own character, but is also paired with another player in the role of the Law. When your character takes centre stage, the player you’re paired with steps into the GM role and opposes you, while the other players spectate and assume the roles of any non-adversarial NPCs you encounter during your spotlight time.

In this way, the roles of player, GM and spectator rotate among the group, and while the player characters’ stories intertwine in the bigger picture, they might never directly encounter one another. In the context of an investigative game with competing factions, you might adapt this setup to pair player characters up not in terms of criminal versus the Law, but in terms of rival versus rival - though the game’s standard Law setup would work quite well if the PCs are investigating some vast, overarching conspiracy.

One Year

HAPPY BIRTHDAY HOLLYWOOD U!!!

In honour of Hollywood U’s first birthday, I decided to write a fic based around this anniversary and also try to incorporate as many HWU characters as possible. I think I’ve only missed two or three at the most… But there’s some of everything. Various characters we haven’t seen in a while… then there’s some Hunt and Chris and Ethan, of course. Enjoy!

Ok seriously I’m not over polarized. The moment that screen appeared to make that last decision I put my controller down and walked away for a bit. I was so mad bc I saw it coming. I thought the whole time this game would be more than this. It’s not even about getting a “happy” ending. It’s about the fact that our choices meant nothing when we were led to believe that our choices would impact our ending. Not just one single final choice. That was bs. I feel like I was tricked and the endings are both unsatisfactory to me. They don’t make sense. None of how polarized went made sense. There were no connections made, no revelations. So much was left unanswered that you can barely keep the story together. I mean, they could’ve made at least a few more episodes completing the story. Polarized felt rushed, and ultimately like it led to nowhere.
