She died within minutes of her daughter Rosanna’s birthday. I have told my friends that when Rosanna had died, I lost my best friend, but gained a family. Rod Gurrola, Dora’s husband who passed in 2019, was my adopted dad, and he and Dora were so supportive of me when my mom died. Dora loved the girls and I have posted here photos of Dora with both Noni and Snicky. You can see how happy the girls are with Dora. She loved that very much and the girls love to explore Dora’s backyard. Dora is survived by two of my adopted sisters, Rosemary and Rosalind (Rosanna and Rosalee, the other two sisters have passed.) I was fortunate to see Dora on Mother’s Day and we had a good visit. I miss her a lot, but I know she is happy being with Rod and her daughters. And now she can see all the girls anytime she wants. #UncleJoe #JosephFiktarz #imissmyuncle This is an early photo of my Uncle Joe. He just crashed his model plane but this photo gives you a good glimpse of what he was about. My mom’s brother, Uncle Joe also moved to California from Brooklyn, New York, and he got a job as an engineer at North American Aviation, where they were working on the Apollo moon launch for NASA. Uncle Joe took me and my brother to the open house there and we saw the lunar module and the Apollo capsule. I actually got to go inside the capsule. It was my uncle that got me interested in electronics, space, and amateur radio. He was a true hobbyist and loved to tinker around, like with this model airplane. Later on we used to talk a lot about computers, which he was really interested in. Also, later on, North American Aviation was bought by Boeing, and the used to have a swap meet where you could pick up old electronics real cheap. They also had a NASA store and you could get 18” x 24” high Rez photos of the moon and earth for about a buck. NASA t-shirts we’re only a couple of dollars and there were pens, space shuttle erasers, all sorts of stuff. I got most of the NASA pins and patches. Very cool! Alas the store is no more but I still remember my uncle fondly talking about space travel and all sorts of things. He died, today, in 2009. I miss you Uncle Joe. Say hi to my mom in heaven. She was described as “a Lady more brilliant than the sun,” and three prophecies, or secrets were revealed to the children. The Blessed Mother appeared on the 13th of each month, from May to October 1917. On the 13th of October, the “Miracle of the Sun” occurred. After a period of rain, the dark clouds broke and the Sun appeared as an opaque spinning disc in the sky. It was said to be significantly duller than normal and to cast multicolored lights across the landscape, the people and the surrounding clouds. The three secrets shown to the children add even more to the story! The first secret was a vision of hell. The second secret predicted the end of World War I and send war would be presaged by a night illuminated by an unknown light. An unusual aurora borealis occurred in 1938 over most of the northern hemisphere just before Hitler seized Austria, starting World War II. In this secret, the Blessed Mother also asked for the conversion of Russia, when that happened a period of peace would follow. The third secret was kept secret and revealed later in 2000 by the church, predicts the death of a pope and other religious figures. Pope Benedict XVI explained that it referred to the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II and that the secret has a permanent and ongoing significance, including the upheaval in the church concerning sexual abuse concerning the clergy. A truly fascinating story and I think something to reflect on today with the upheaval we are experiencing with pandemic. Happy Feast Day! She emigrated from an area in the Ukraine that changed hands several times. It was part of Austria and then became part of Poland. She spoke Ukrainian. I remember her making us Pierogies from scratch. I miss her and I miss those pierogies! This picture is my mom with her mom, Babchi, at San Juan Capistrano. I was a little baby and my brother was maybe 2 or three. We would go to the mission at Capistrano to see the return of the swallows, which the mission is famous for. Happy Birthday Babchi!
