Decaying In Reverse - A TGS Murder Mystery

Part 1: The Impermanence of Death

It was a sleepy autumn morning in London when it occurred. Birds flitted about from place to place, their twittering songs serving as the chorus for the steady building symphony of the city below. As the sun's rays began to warm the brick and cobblestone of the buildings, and those who could spent a few extra hours in their beds, a far less sensible man was finishing the last of a stack of paperwork.

Henry Jekyll was known to many as many things; a perfect gentleman, an accomplished doctor, but most importantly, a workaholic. The Scotsman had spent the entire night slaving away at his desk, as evidenced by the horrible ache in his spine and wrist, and the bone-deep exhaustion weighing his too-thin body down. He failed to stifle a yawn as he added his signature to the final piece of paper, blinking tiredly at it. He squinted, bringing the sheet closer to his face, then nodded, satisfied with the level of neatness the writing possessed. He set the paper to the side, glancing about his office while he tidied up his workspace. Upon noticing the time on the clock he frowned. Had he really worked until five in the morning?

As if to answer him, his stomach growled, breaking the silence of the office in a way that coloured the doctor's cheeks a rosy pink. Right, then. If he wanted to get anymore work done today, he needed to grab something to eat. He could work running on no sleep, and he could work without food in his stomach, but not at the same time as he'd found out the hard way. Decision made, he finally stood from his chair, wincing as his back let out a series of cracks and pops more befitting a man at least twenty years his senior. He swayed slightly afterwards, causing him to grip the desk. Yes, he definitely needed some food, his blood sugar must be a bit low.

The trek to the kitchens was surprisingly peaceful. He'd forgotten how quiet the Society could be when no one was shouting or running around or blowing something up. He found himself smiling, tired and bittersweet, as he reminicsed on the memories of those exact instances. The first time Luckett had blown something up, Robert had nearly had a heart attack. The Lodgers had had a good laugh about that afterwards, and Henry had tried his hardest not to laugh at their dramatized impressions of his friend's reaction. His smile faded as he thought about how those moments quickly faded, the Lodgers absorbed in each other and Henry absorbed in his taxes and debts and legal fees. By the time he'd opened the kitchen doors, he was in a rather melancholy mood, which only heightened his surprise at what was inside.

A little pastry sat on a plate, coated with a pink icing, red writing on top spelling the words 'We're Sorry Jekyll!' He found his eyes stinging as the cornera of his mouth tugged up. Maybe all hope wasn't lost. Maybe their was still time to bond with the Lodgers, to rebuild those friendships, to be the leader they could rely on. Heart thrumming with timid happiness, he raised the treat to his lips and bit into it.

To an untrained tongue, the sweet flavour of the pastry might be mistaken for wild carrot, leading to the assumption they were eating a carrot cake of some sort. As a rather experienced alchemist, Henry immediately identified the taste for what it was.

His eyes widened with terror as he hastily spat the bite out, but it was too late. He tried to suck in a breath to call out for help, but already the poison of the plant was constricting his airways. The founder clawed at his throat until his nails were caked with blood, trying in vain to alleviate the pressure cutting off his oxygen intake. He began searching the countertops wildly; if he could get his hands on a small blade, he could puncture a hole in his esophagus, and while it was a last resort, it would allow him the chance to breathe. That thought had bately registered in his brain before his body seized, and he collapsed to the floor, jerking and twisting as the poison flooded his brain.

Aggravated Hemlock, a plant bred as a more fast-acting and lethal version of the common hemlock plant, could kill a grown in five minutes, which would be filled with the worst pain the victin had ever felt.

Henry Jekyll died after ten.

The clock read five o'clock, on the dot.

Henry sgared at it's glassy surface, his entire body trembling. His muscles still ached from seizing for ten full minutes, and the skin on his throat was an irritated shade of red with thin scabs reaching from beneath his jaw to the collar of his shirt, as if a faded remnant of the bloodied mess it had been after eating the poisoned pastry.

Heart racing in his chest, Henry clutched his head in his hands, trying to come to terms with suddenly being a good thirty minutes in the past after having been murdered by someone presumably living in his building.

First Decision

It was merely a dream, Henry, go about your day.

Fuck that, hide in your office!! There's a murderer!!

Ough I have Many disconnected thoughts and aus about this and I'm about to ramble to you about All of the them

To start, Jekyll + Hyde are alicorns. He accidentally scienced a bit too strongly and suddenly woke up as now technically the prince of (rogue) science lol. I'm not sure what Jekyll was originally as they're all really good options for him,, OUGH If not alicorn then kirin. Part kirin? Poor man is going to feel he has even more reason to suppress his emotions

Rachel is a pegasus! Or, if we want to expand a bit, a Griffin perhaps? ;0

Jasper is an earth pony :]

Lanyon is a pegasus. But the other options are also v good for him

Frankenstein,, ough,, idk, earth pony speaks to me right now. Unicorn is also good

I like to imagine the lodgers are all sorts of different creatures, kinda like the friendship school. Hehe, Griffin being a griffin, ough or a changling

In a mlp au where, while in the same universe, they don't live in the area or time where g4 takes place- and are thus more similar to the tgs world

(If hes an alicorn) Jekyll hides he's an alicorn because "On the one hoof, being the alicorn of science would be great for the society's reputation. On the other. Technically turning myself into an alicorn could be considered blasphemy or an attempt to usurp the throne,,,,"

This one is also more silly and character interaction focused because I can't imagine mlp to be condemning the use of mad science, since that's basically magic. They do still have a problem with the whole stitching together corpses thing though. And splitting your soul in half

Jeks has done something with it before I believe, but I really like the idea of Jekyll and Twilight being related. Cousins? Distant cousins? Niece and uncle? Idk, but they're related somehow :] They both went to Celestia's magic school in Canterlot, probably not at the same time though, since I imagine Henry is much older.

Hyde likes to run around being a menace, and if alicorn, might have genuinely fooled a few into believing The Spirit of London Canterlot at Night is some aspect of nightmare moon lol

Jasper came from Ponyville to Canterlot and is actually a were timber wolf! He still worked on the farm. Though I'm not sure if the Apple farm or an unrelated one. If related to the Apple family. Then Japser leaving after getting his Not apple themed cutie mark definitely gave Apple Bloom some extra fears in that one episode where she thought not having an apple cutie mark would get her kicked off the farm (Jasper didn't actually get kicked off the farm)

Jasper and Fluttershy are best friends :] at least pen pals

Lanyon's family would definitely be the type of ponies that go the the grand galloping gala everytime it started up again. The night the main 6 "ruined" the gala was definitely in the top best days of his life. Of the main 6 I think Lanyon would hang out with,, hmm, Twilight? The others might be too energetic for him. But Twilight reminds him of Jekyll. She also isn't too proper and fancy. I think Lanyon would also like Rarity, but at first he immediately hated her. There'd be an episode where they're forced to work together and he realizes that she isn't all that bad

I've posted a decent amount about the lore of my MLP AU on here already, so I qill use this opportunity to add; Discord and Henry in my AU become absolute besties, which feels weird but trust me I Have A Reason!! (The reason being I love the him/hj)

In my AU, Discord does his whole 'break out of stone time-out' thing like in canon, but he's pretty injured and tired and has to go heal and rest. He books it to the Everfree Forest to chill because no one goes in there, except surprise!! Henry routinely goes in there for rare herbs and plants for his alchemy and medicines. He finds Discord and Geeks Out because he's a draconequus and those are Super Rare and Hard To Find. Discord originally intends to manipulate Henry into bringing him food and medicine, but they end up kind of bonding during this time, and after a mishap he finds out about Henry's Whole Traumatic Deal.

He decides he'd rather chill in the Everfree Forest and cause minor acts of chaos instead of his original plan because he knows he'd probably be encased in stone again if the Princesses found him. He really only likes Henry being around and is kind of possessive and overprotective of him until Henry coaxes him into meeting Fluttershy, and then he starts learning and healing more and opens up to the idea of meeting more people. The three of them are close friends and spend a lot of time in the Everfree Forest together, studying plant life and animals and pulling small pranks on each other.

Of course, people eventually start to notice Fluttershy and Henry going into the forest all the time, and it's only a matter of time until the Princesses find out 👀
