Ryland Grace has always loved his pokemon.

He loved his Eevee even when it refused to evolve, knowing that the pokemon will be able to decide for itself when the time is right.
He loved his Solosis, who showed up not long after he decided to purse a future in molecular biology as if a sign from the stars themselves. Solosis was a reminder of his goals and dreams whenever he started to doubt himself, a grounding presence that gave him confidence. Evolving into a Duosion as he worked on his PhD, it floated by his side even during the hardest moments of his career.
He loved his Sylveon, a symbol of happiness in his life as Eevee evolved shortly after he started his career as a school teacher. It helped him soothe panicking kids in his classroom, the way their eyes would light up every time its soft ribbons would wrap around their shaking hands. Sylveon found its true calling right as he found his, and together they couldn't be happier.
He loved his Minior, despite the fact that its arrival in his life also brought many changes and challenges. Minior would float around his head like a living pop-up notification whenever he spent too much time working on paperwork regarding Project Hail Mary, urging him to take breaks and take care of himself. He always smiled at it brightly, even when it's shining yellow body reminded him of the impending doom that awaited their sun.
Ryland Grace still loved his pokemon as the Hail Mary officially launched towards Tau Ceti, their pokeballs sitting in Eva Stratt's dark and cold office.
He still loved them after waking up with no memory in the middle of space, feeling as if something important was missing.
He still loved them, strolling idly on the beach of his Erid biodome.
Ryland Grace will always love his pokemon, a constant reminder of the love he holds in his heart.
